NullPointerException Question

Please can anyone tel me why do I get a nullPointerException when I do this?
try {
String rda= table.getValueAt(row,col);
v.add(1, rda);
System.out.println("Vector innehller" + v.elementAt(1));
catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
or this:
Object rda[];
rda[0]= table.getValueAt(row,col);

what is v? how is it declared and constructed?

  • NullPointerException question (probably easy)

    Hi,
    I am currently using a JDK 1.2 release from 1999 or so.
    In a class, I have an array:
    class foo {
    double bar[];
    In a method, I populate the array:
    void foobar ()
    bar = new double[13];
    bar[0] = 0.0;
    ... // all 13 elements assigned values
    Nothing else touches the array.
    I instantiate the class as "g" and call g.foobar()
    As soon as it returns, g.bar is null. Referencing it gives NullPointerException.
    help?
    the bug database comes back with too many hits to look through for NullPointerException. I've encountered this bug before, usually able to work around it, not this time. The class implements a bunch of gradients for a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem. I can send anyone who is interested the source.
    I probably just need a patch. Can someone point me toward one?

    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    class find2 {
         double bar[];
         void foobar(){
              bar = new double[13];
              for(int i=0;i<13;i++){
                   bar[i] = i*1.1;
         public static void main (String args[]){
              find2 g = new find2();
              g.foobar();//comment this line and see
              for(int j=0;j<g.bar.length;j++){
                   System.out.println(g.bar[j]);
              for(int j=0;j<g.bar.length;j++){
                   System.out.println(g.bar[j]);
    }i just tried this little program, i just initialized as you have done in the foobar() method, U can see, if in the main program, if you comment out the line g.foobar(); then it throws a nullpointerException, otherwise it will not, so, i guess you are not calling the method before trying to access the bar values

  • Question about NullPointerException

    hey, i'm new to Java and i'm working my way through the tutorial right now. I've recently gotten through the section on objects and method, and wrote this program to test what i learned. i created Mark, Grid, and Display classes, which all compiled fine. however, when i tried to run it, i got a nullpointerexception everytime i tried to call any of my methods that referenced a grid object.
    heres the grid class:
    public class Grid {
         int[ ][ ] grid;
         public final static int XAXIS = 3;
         public final static int YAXIS = 3;
         public final static int XMARK = 1;
         public final static int OMARK = 2;
         public final static int BLANK = 7;
         public static int winner = 0;
         public Grid() {
              int[ ][ ] grid = new int[XAXIS][YAXIS];
              for( int x = 0; x < XAXIS; x++ ) {
                   for( int y = 0; y < YAXIS; y++ ) {
                        grid[x][y] = BLANK;
         public int GetGrid( Grid grid, Mark mark ) {
              return grid.grid[mark.x][mark.y];
         public void SetGridX( Grid grid, Mark mark ) {
              grid.grid[mark.x][mark.y] = XMARK;
         public void SetGridO( Grid grid, Mark mark ) {
              grid.grid[mark.x][mark.y] = OMARK;
    and here's the call, that reported an error:
    public class GridTest {
         public static void main( String[] args ) {
              Grid grid = new Grid();
              Mark mark = new Mark();
              mark.SetPoint( mark, 1, 1 );
              System.out.println( grid.GetGrid( grid, mark) );
    i have no idea what i'm doing wrong... didn't i populate the array correctly? thanks, anyone that will help
    Mikal

    public class Grid {
    int[ ][ ] grid;
    public Grid() {
    int[ ][ ] grid = new int[XAXIS][YAXIS];
    }Two things I can see:-
    - You've actually declared two grid objects - see the section I've put in above. The first one never gets initialised, and that's the one you keep calling (hence the exception). You only need to have one grid object.
    - Class names are case sensitive. Your getter and setter methods are using lower case "grid", but should be upper.
    Hope this helps.

    That is great! Thanks. I've got two question though.
    1.) Now I want to have 100 bouncing balls. Is the best way to achieve this is through an array of GOvals? I haven't gotten to the lecture on arrays on Stanford's ITunesU site yet so I am not sure what is possible with what I know now.An array would work, or a List. But it doesn't matter much in this case.
    2.) Are references being passed by value only applicable to Java or is that common to object-oriented programming? Also is there a way to force Java to pass in "BallA" instead of the value "null"?I can't say about all OO languages as a whole, but at least C++ can pass by reference.
    And no, there's no way to pass a reference to the BallA variable, so the method would initialize it and it wouldn't be null anymore.
    When you call the method with your BallA variable, the value of the variable is examined and it's passed to the method. So you can't pass the name of a variable where you'd want to store some object you created in the method.
    But you don't need to either, so there's no harm done.

  • NullPointerException

    I have classes CDRack, Record and TestProgram.
    When I am trying to run TestProgram I have runtime error:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    at CDRack.insert(Record,int) (CDRack.java:88) (pc 7)
    at Tester63.testAddings (Tester63.java:62) (pc 64)
    What's wrong in the class CDRack, method insert?
    /** Class CDRack represents collections of compact discs. Discs are
    located in the rack in slots numbered from zero upwards. The discs
    are represented by Record objects and empty slots by null values. */
    public class CDRack extends Object {
    /**Creates a new, empty CD rack.
    Parameters:
    size - the size of the new rack, i.e. the number of slots it has */
    public CDRack(int size) {
        collection = new Record[size];
        this.size = size;
    /**Inserts a cd in the given rack slot if the slot in question is empty.
    Parameters:
    disc - the cd to be added in the rack
    slot - the number of a (hopefully empty) slot
    Returns:
    a boolean value indicating if the insertion was successful. */
    public boolean insert(Record disc,
                          int slot) {
      if (collection[slot].equals(null)) {
         collection[slot] = record;
         return true;
      else return false;
    }

    I suspect it is the line that reads
    if (collection[slot].equals(null))
    If the array entry at collection[slot] is null this will indeed cause a NullPointerException. If you are trying to test for a null entry, which is what it looks like you need to do it like this
    if (collection[slot] == null)

  • I require assistance w/r/t nullpointerexception!

    Hi there, thanks for taking the time to read this. I'm a beginning Java programming student and I've unfortunately reached an impasse on a program given my level of knowledge. I've spent the last couple of hours attempting to diagnose this problem, so I will now try to articulate it rather than spewing tons of code (I assume this method is more helpful?)
    I am creating a program in which a Course object has, as a private data field, an array of Student objects. Once outside of the constructor which allocates the 10 student objects to the reference variable (studentlist), I find it impossible to accomplish anything when I try to reference a particular student object within the array of student objects within the course object.
    I am particularly interested in setting a specific student object within the array of students (i.e. studentlist[something]) to "point" to a specific student object that a separate method retrieved.
    Essentially, this is my problem:
    I am attempting to access an element of the array of student objects (a data field within my Course class), which has already been allocated via constructor, inside a behavior method of the Course class itself.
    A simple statement within the particular method of the Course class such as: "studentlist[0] = new Student()'" and also "studentlist[numofstudents] = student;" (student being the retrieved object reference variable, accounted for in terms of possessing desired info) gives me the evil NullPointerException. I'm simply at a loss and quite frustrated, so any advice will be of help. Thank you!

    A simple statement within the particular method of the Course class such
    as: "studentlist[0] = new Student()'" and also "studentlist[numofstudents] = student;"
    (student being the retrieved object reference variable, accounted for in terms of
    possessing desired info) gives me the evil NullPointerException.Be careful that in your Course constructor you don't declare and initialise another array. This will leave the instance variable still null.class Course {
            // the array in question
        private Student[] studentlist;
        Course() {
                // good
            studentlist = new Student[10];
                // bad - this new variable will "go out of scope"
                // when the constructor has finished
            //Student[] studentlist = new Student[10];
        // methods involving studentlist...
    }This is just a guess of course. For a more certain answer you will have to post some code! The trick is to leave out the code that doesn't have a direct bearing on your problem - but still include enough to show what the problem is.
    (A little point: studentlist[numofstudents] suffers from another problem if numofstudents has its obvious meaning. Java arrays are zero based, so the largest valid index is numofstudents-1.)

    When I try the URL: "http://myserver/NASApp/<app name>/myjsp.jsp", I got this error message from kjs.

    I got this working. Here are the steps that I followed and the output...

    4. Shutdown the iAS and iWS and started again
    5. Invoked the .jsp file by typing http://sundts2.india.sun.com:81/NASApp/helloworld/myjsp.jsp in the browser.

  • NullPointerException while sending signed XML via SOAP to Axis webservice

    Hello,
    I was wondering if it was possible to change the behavior of Apache XML Security libraries and delete "ds:" namespaces while digitally signing XML files.
    We are trying to send signed XML to a local chilean IRS, as a part of an automatic autentication process. The steps to authenticate are quite straightforward and involve:
    1. Obtain from webservice 1 a "seed", which is a random number representing temporal session opened
    2. Sign this seed (in XML format) using our certificate
    3. Send signed XML to another webservice 2, which should validate it and open a permanent session, returning a "token", which is an alphanumeric string
    What happens is that steps 1 and 2 are completed without problems, while we cannot pass step 3. The webservice (as far I know mounted on Apache Axis) fails with ugly error "NullPointerException".
    The IRS says that our signed XML, although valid, seems strange to them, as it contains those "ds:" added by Apache Xml Security libraries while signing the file.
    So here comes the question: is it possible to obtain valid signed XML without those "ds:"? What other reasons may result in that NullPointerException error?
    We use simple Java class and VeriSign certificate stored in Java keystore to sign XML files, and Apache Xml Security 1.2.0 jars.
    For any clues that could help us thank you in advance.

    Hi,
    Few months ago we had also problems with "locked user" in XI, in our case XIAPPLUSER was sometimes (b)locked.
    Perhaps note:
    721548 Changing the passwords of the XI 3.0 service users
    will help you.
    We removed and entered the service users again, with the password in CAPITALS and language blank.
    After that our problem was solved, I hope yours too.

  • Pointer on what to look for (NullPointerException in FontManager.getFont2D)

    I have a screen that we are trying to display remotely (via an RMI bridge). On the local application it displays properly everytime, but when displayed remotely It displays properly once. From then on it comes up blank with a null pointer exception (Posted below). Right now I'm thinking there is something in the set-up for the local applicateion that is not happening on the remote one. But I didn't write either and my brute force investigation hasn't trned up anything.
    Since I only have to disconnect and close the remote application and restart to get it to display again this could also be a problem cleaning up resources on a window close. I'm hoping that someonw might have an idea of what causes this Exception. Moste references I've found to it appear to be listed as fixed (And aren't the same thing since they happen all the time) or are in threads that just stopped with no resolution. I'm hoping that if I find out what it means I might have a better idea what to look for.

  • Java.lang.NullPointerException while creating Communication Channel

    Dear friends
    First of all, I have already looked at many existing postings with java Null Pointer problems and also looked at the links that other users had suggested. It hasn't helped and therefore I am posting this question here.
    I am trying to create Communication Channel using Integration Scenario Configurator.
    I get to a stage where it gives a java.lang.NullPointerException error + an InternatlError. Here is the log of internal error. However, if i Continue ignoring the error message, it creates two communication channels that I wanted (Sender Soapadapter and Receiver RFC adapter), but the values in these adapters will not be completely filled.
    Has anybody seen this problem before. We are using the latest and gratest SAP that is available in the market.
    (PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE ERROR MESSAGES)
    Thanks

  • Load Balancing Directory Servers with Access Manager - Simple questions

    Hi.
    We are in the process of configuring 2 Access Manager instances (servers) accessing the same logical LDAP repository (comprising physically of two Directory Servers working together with Multi-Master Replication configured and tested) For doing this, we are following guide number 819-6258.
    The guide uses BigIP load balancer for load balancing the directory servers. However, we intend to use Directory Proxy Server. Since we faced some (unresolved) issues last time that we used DPS, there are some simple questions that I would be very grateful to have answers to:
    1. The guide, in section 3.2.10 (To configure Access Manager 1 with the Directory Server load balancer), talks about making changes at 4 places, and replacing the existing entry (hostname and port) with the load balancer's hostname and port (assuming that the load balancer has already been configured). It says that changes need not be made on Access Manager 2 since the LDAPs are in replication, and hence changes will be replicated at all places. However, the guide also states that changes have to be made in two files, namely AMConfig.properties, and the serverconfig.xml file. But these changes will not be reflected on Access Manager 2, since these files are local on each machine.
    Question 1. Do changes have to be made in AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml files on the other machine hosting Access Manager 2?
    Question 2: What is the purpose of putting these values here? Specifically, what is achieved by specifying the Directory server host and port in AMConfig.properties, as well as in serverconfig.xml?
    Question 3. In the HTTP console, there is the option of specifying multiple primary LDAP servers, as well as multiple secondary LDAP servers. What is the purpose of these? Are secondary servers attempted when none of the list in the primary list are accessible? Also, if there are multiple entries in the primary server list, are they accessed in a round robin fashion (hereby providing rudimentary load balancing), or are other servers accessed only when the one mentioned first is not reachable etc.?
    2. Since I do not have a load balancer setup yet, I tried the following deviation to the above, which, according to me, should have worked. If viewed in the HTTP console, LDAP / Membership / MSISDN and Policy configuration all pointed to the DS on host 1. When I changed all these to point to the directory server on host 2 (and made AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml on host 1 point to DS of host 2 as well), things should have worked fine, but apparently Access manager 1 could not be started. Error from Webserver:

    In effect, AM on 1 did not start. On rolling back the changes, things again worked like previously.
    Will be really grateful for any help / insight / experience on dealing with the above.
    Thanks!

    Update to the above, incase anyone is reading:
    We setup a similar setup in Windows, and it worked. Here is a detailed account of what was done:
    1. Host 1: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
    All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST1:389)
    2. Host 2: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
    All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST2:389)
    3. Host 1: Started replication. Set to Master
    4. Host 2: Started replication. Set to Master
    5. Host 1: Setup replication agreement to Host 2
    6. Host 2: Setup replication agreement to Host 1
    7. Initiated the remote replica from Host 1 ----> Host 2
    Note that since default installation uses abc.....xyz as the encryption key, setting this to same was not an issue.
    9. Started webserver for Host 1 and logged into AM as amadmin.
    10. Added Host 2 FQDN in DNS Aliases / Realms
    11. Added http://HOST2_FQDN:80 in the Platform server (instance) list.
    12. Started Host 2 webserver. Logged in AM on Host 2, things worked fine.
    At this stage, note the following:
    a) Host 1:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host1_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host1_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    b) Host 2:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host2_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host2_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    c) If one logs into AM, and checks LDAP servers for LDAP / Policy Configuration / Membership etc services, they all contain Host2_FQDN:389 (which makes sense, since replica 2 was initialized from 1)
    Returning back to the configuations:
    13. On Host 1, login into the Admin server console of the Directory server. Navigate to the DPS, and confgure the following:
    a) Network Group
    b) LDAP servers
    c) Load Balancing
    d) Change Group
    e) Action on-bind
    f) Allow all actions (permit modification / deletion etc.).
    g) any other configuations required - Am willing to give detailed steps if someone needs them to help me / themselves! :)
    So now, we have DPS configured and running on Host1:489, and distributing load to DS1 and DS2 on a 50:50 basis.
    14. Now, log into AM on Host 1, and instead of Host1_fqdn:389 (for DS) in the following places, specify Host1_fqdn:489 (for the DPS)--
    LDAP Authentication
    MSISDN server
    Membership Service
    Policy configuation.
    Verified that this propagated to the Policy Configuration service and the LDAP authentication service that are already registered with the default organization.
    15. Log out of AM. Following the documentation, modify directory.host and directory.port in AMConfig.properties to point to Host 1_FQDN and 489 respectively. Make this change in AMConfig.properties of both Host 1 as well as 2.
    16. Edit serverconfig.xml on both hosts, and instead of they pointing to their local directory servers, point both to host1_FQDN:489
    17. When you start the webserver, it will refuse to start. Will spew errors such as:

    Success!
    The server https-host1_FQDN has started up.
    The server infact, didn't start up (nothing even listening on 58080).
    However, if AMConfig.properties is left as it originally was, and only serverconfig.xml files were changed as mentioned above, web servers started fine, and things worked all okay. (Alright, except for some glitches when viewed in /amconsole. If /amserver/console is accessed, all is good. Can this mean that all is still not well? I am not sure).
    So far so good. Now comes the sad part. When the same is done on Solaris 9, things dont work. You continue to get the above error, OR the following error, and the web server will refuse to start:
    Differences in Solaris and Windows are as follows:
    1. Windows hosts have 1 IP and hostname. Solaris hosts have 3 IPs and hostnames (for DS, DPS, and webserver).
    No other difference from an architectural perspective.
    Any help / insight on why the above is not working (and why the hell does the documentation seem so sketchy / insecure / incorrect).
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Please help me jmf question

    Hi i want to create custom data source as i have read in different post and also on sun site
    I tried to create one one for my self,
    where am getting stream from tcp port.
    before that i test the data by using socket programming, i saved the input stream into file and played and its working fine and then i transfer that file using avtransmiter2.java and it work fine again its mean it confirm that the data i am getting from skype is working fine . now my question is how to get that input stream and instead of saving to the file i can play it using jmf player or send it on rtp session. i read different post how to create custom data source from inputstreams but have not work for me ... i modified a user code posted http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0106&L=jmf-interest&D=0&P=25865 in that post some body recommanded to implement seekable so i implemented that one als in that code..... below is the code

    Use a BufferedImage where you draw the other images.
    You have to know the size.
    For example if the size is (50*50) for each image :
    int width =50;
    int height = 50;
    BufferedImage bufIm = new BufferedImage(width*3,height*3,BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
    Graphics gr = bufIm.createGraphics();
    int k, j;
    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    Image imTemp;
    for (k = 0; k<3; k++) {
        for (j = 0; j<3; j++) {
            imTemp = tk.getImage(imageNames[k][j]);
            gr.drawImage(imTemp,width*k,height*j, this); // replace this by the Image observer you want (this if you are in a panel for example)
    }After that bufIm contains the images as you want and you can paint it on a Graphics.

  • Questions on Signed Applets -- Can't Get it to Work

    For some reason my applet doesn't do any of the JDBC stuff that it's supposed to do on the web, yet when I run it through my IDE (Eclipse) the JDBC stuff gets executed. I uploaded all of my .class files and the mysql-connector com and org packages. Anybody have an idea what's wrong? I know this may be vague, so please ask questions if you need more information.
    I got this error message when I changed things up a bit:
    Connecting to the url MySQL database on port [port]
    SQLException: Communications link failure due to underlying exception:
    ** BEGIN NESTED EXCEPTION **
    java.security.AccessControlException
    MESSAGE: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission [url] resolve)
    Message was edited by:

    When I view my applet on my website I get the error message: The application's digital signature is invalid. All I did was follow the steps at the URL I mentioned. What could I have done wrong? =(
    Perhaps it's the policy file. Should I make the policy file myself? I uploaded the one that Eclipse made for me. It looks like this:
    /* AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED ON Tue Apr 16 17:20:59 EDT 2002*/
    /* DO NOT EDIT */
    grant {
    permission java.security.AllPermission;
    Oh, and this is what my Java Console says when I view the applet on the website:

  • WSDL nullPointerException

    Hi All,
    I have a problem with some wsdl files.
    Situation:
    1. BEA Server 9.0
    2. Starting point for web service is WSDL file.
    3. WSDL file imports XSD schema type definitions!
    4. Web service generated with Bea 9 Ant tasks "wsdlc" and "jwsc".
    5. Service generation, deployment and test OK.
    However, if the WSDL file is requested online from the service
    e.g. "http://host/service/AService.jws?WSDL"
    the WSDL file does not contain directly the XSD schema type definitions but still import statements like
    <xs:import namespace="http://anamespace"
    schemaLocation="AService.jws?WSDL/sub/in/ATypeIn.xsd" />
    When I try to generate a Service Control with Weblogic Workshop 8.1.4 I receive a NullPointerException at line 0 column 0.
    Question:
    1. Is this a bug? or
    2. Is it possible to configure the Server (or web service generation Ant task or ...) in such a way that the web service response with a WSDL file that contains directly all XSD schema type definitions?
    Your help is very much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Cord

    Hi guys,
    I had the same problem and what I had to do was import the Schema project that holds all schemas included in the WSDL that I was trying to generate a control from. In my case I had the Schema project because I was the one that developed the WebService too, in your case it's possible that you have to create an Schema project and somehow extract the schemas from de WSDL and create .xsd files to put in the project.
    After doing this you will see the popup window (when you try to generate a service control from the WSDL file) asking if you want to use the XMLBeans generated from the xsd files in your Schema project otherwise it will generate inner classes based in the WSDL's schemas, you must choose YES (use the existing XMLBeans) and that should be it for creating a Service Control based on a WSDL file.
    Hope this helps in most cases.

    Hi all,
    i have a problem by solving an error in my code. The Code is mainly from Ian Darwin.
    The code i am running works with j2sdk1.4.2_04. But now i have to bring it to work with jdk1.6.0_13.
    The code parses xml documents. With small xml documents the code works. With large xml documents i get the following error while running the produced class file.

    I know what a java.lang.NullPointerException mens. But i don't know where i have to look for. Specially i don't know what or where "com.sun.org.apache...." is.
    Is there a package that a have to add to the environment? Can some one tell my where i can find this package?
    I wrote the code for some years ago, 2006 or so. With the knew jdk1.6.0_13 some thinks chance in the environment. Couldn't find what exactly.
    The code has only 215 lines, but some how i can't add it to this Message, because Maximum allowed is only 7500.
    Is there an other Forum, which may is better for my question?
