Nulls VS 0.00 in reports
Post Author: ROMZILBER
CA Forum: WebIntelligence Reporting
Hello
I am new to BO so may be this is a question that can be answered very simple.
We have outer joint on some of the tables. Let say we have policies and payments activities, not all policies have activity. When we ran the report we could not come up with totals, so we have added nvl on all amounts (we are using Oracle), but now report returns 0.00 even if there is no activity for the policy, how can we display null when we display the report.
Thank you

Romzilber,
Good show on discovering the use of NVL within your database (I'm assuming that you set this via when building the object in your universe). As you're discovering, certain BI tools handle "things" differently once the data is returned from the database server. It seems that Webfocus knew how to handle the null (as is the case with several other leading BI tools), however, Business Objects didn't seem to do the same, which you discovered through trials and testing. Trial and testing is a good thing, but now you've also learned a lesson of never assuming that the reporting tool is handling everything for you and also that you should be prepared to "fix" those things that it is not handling via alternative means. Good luck moving forward!

#### 's displayed instead of null values of infobject in report
In my REport i have an infobject 0PAYSCALEGR , but in cube that infobject having nodata.
When executing the report the entries under that object are displayed like 10###.
Why it is happening like that how to make those #### to Blank
Thanks
prakashHi,
Since 0PAYSCALEGR has compounding attributes you MUST supply their values during load into the cube. Check if you do it.

Display null rows / columns in matrix report
Hi,
Is it possible to display any character ('0' for example) in a matrix report where the entire row or column show no value at all ?
My matrix shows Row1 and Row2 with values but no Row3 at all like this:
Column1 Column2 Column3
Row1 value1 value2 value3
Row2 value4 value5 value6
But I would like it to show my rows 3 with '0's :
Column1 Column2 Column3
Row1 value1 value2 value3
Row2 value4 value5 value6
Row3 0 0 0
Thank you,
DeniseMake your query return 0 with nvl(column, 0) and an outer join, plus some stuff to avoid a double outer join.
E.g. a sales per product per city:
City1 City2 City3
Prod1 10 100 12
Prod2 25 110 200
Prod3 0 0 0Could be made like this:
create table city (c_city varchar2(10));
create table prod (p_prod varchar2(10));
create table prod_sales (ps_city varchar2(10)
, ps_prod varchar2(10)
, ps_sales number);
<.....insert some values, except voor Prod3 .....>
SQL> select p_prod, c_city, nvl(ps_sales,0)
2 from (select c_city, p_prod from city, prod)
3 , prod_sales
4 where ps_city(+) = c_city
5 and ps_prod(+) = p_prod
6 order by 1,2 ;
P_PROD C_CITY NVL(PS_SALES,0)
Prod1 City1 10
Prod1 City2 100
Prod1 City3 12
Prod2 City1 25
Prod2 City2 110
Prod2 City3 200
Prod3 City1 0
Prod3 City2 0
Prod3 City3 0 -

Call any one of the methods

Every since I updated to version 4 my browser has been constantly crashing, especially when I have a few tabs open. I need to give up on this version. My computer is windows XP sp3. Can I uninstall version 4 and install an earlier version and still get my add-ons? I don't have many, but xmarks and firebug are important to me.
Now this form is malfunctioning.Try to uninstall the current Java version and maybe delete the Java installation folder (C:\Java) if that didn't work.
You can also use the JavaRa Uninstaller.

Firefox should have recreated at least extensions.rdf.

Report is showing "null" string for null values.

I checked the query , it gives blank (empty value) data for null values. But in report it is coming as "null" value (string "null"). I require to show the report as blank data for null values. Can you please help me to find solution for this ?.
Thank you very much in advance.

How to avoid # in the report output in BEx for null characteristic values?
Hi All,
In a query output, # values are shown for the charactersitics which are null. I would appreciate if someone would help showing null instead of # in the reports for the null values.
Regards
SubbaHi,
There are various options.
1. Exclude the # in filters for that chararcteristics, it will remove all # values.
2. Display the text for that Characteristcs which will be displayed as "Not assigned".
3. If you want to display as "Null", Change the entry in text table of the charaterictics for value # as "Null".
4. While updating this filed in cube/DSO write routine to replace #/blank with "Null".
I hope it will help.
Thanks,

Report -- filter with selection list -- show all values after select page
Hello!
I have the following problem:
- I have a report
- this report can be filtered with a selection-list
- the selection list is based on dynamic LOV and has a null-value
- I added the code of the report the following, to filter the report after choosing a value of the selection list:
... and (instr(type, decode(:P8_FILTER_type, '%null%',type,:P8_FILTER_type)) > 0)
This works very well.
But my problem is: When the user logs out and the next time, he logs in, the selection list shows " --- show all values --- " (my null-display-value) and the report is empty "no values found".
---> I want to show the first time, the page is selected ALL the values of the report. (this is now only possile if I press the button which belongs to the selection list)
I hope, somebody understands my problem.
Thank you so much,
LISAHello Lisa,
The first time it's probably NULL.
So what you can do in your where: (instr(type, decode(NVL(:P8_FILTER_type,'%null%'), '%null%',type,:P8_FILTER_type)) > 0)
Off topic: I also wonder if that where clause can't be simpler? Do you rely need the instr?

Null value in parameter form.
In parameter form I want to leave blank option in order to print a report for all the values in the parameter form. I am writing the query for the parameter LOV that it fetches the values and making a union with 'select to_char(null) from dual.
I am getting a blank and the required output when the report is run using the report builder but the this blank space or null value disappears when the report is run on application server 10g. It seems to be a small problem but I am not able to get a solution for this. Please, suggest something.Hi,
Instead of a Null, why not use '-ALL-',
union all
select '-ALL-'
from dualthen in your query, you will have,
where column_1 = decode(:param1, '-ALL-', column_1, :param1) that way it will be more clearer for the users that if they picked '-ALL-' in the LOV that they will get all records and will eliminate the problem you are having with null when you deploy your report in application server.

How to avoid the null values from xml publisher.
I am creating a report which have the claim numbers with the values CLA001,CLA111,null, null . when i preview my report it is showing some spaces for null values also. How can i avoid the spaces from the report.
I am giving for loop for the claim numbers in the template.
<?for-each:ROW?> <?sort:CLAIMNUMBER;'ascending';data-type='text'?>
<?CLAIMNUMBER?>
<?end for-each?>
Please help me out to solve this problem.
Thanks,
vasanth.Hi Sheshu,
According to your description, you are experiencing the null values and infinity values when browser the calculated measure, right?
Based on my research, the issue is caused by that dividing a non-zero or non-null value by zero or null. In this cases, we need to check for division by zero to avoid this situation. Here is the sample query for you reference.
IIF(
Measures.[Measure B]=0,null,
Measures.[Measure A] / Measures.[Measure B]
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Cannot delete reports, unless I close and open Eclipse/Tomcat
Please can someone help me.
I cannot delete reports. I have not worked out all the details yet but this is what I got so far...
First I thought it was a problem with my tomcat setup, I would deploy my WAR and run the app. After
viewing the report and closing the browser. I would not beable to delete the rpt file until I close Tomcat.
I have now got a similar problem within Eclipse. (as far as I can tell its the same problem but even worse)
If i create any report and design it or even a new blank report. And not do anything to it, just save it as a blank report. I then try delete the
report. Right click and then delete.
After a few seconds Eclipse brings up an error and says it cant delete the file, the reason it gives is
Problems encountered while deleting resources.
Could not delete 'C:\WorkSpace\Project\WebContent\Report1.rpt'.
Problems encountered while deleting files.
Could not delete: C:\WorkSpace\Project\WebContent\Report1.rpt.
I have tried creating a fresh new project and only one report. And I still get the error.
If I try delete the whole project perminatly it also gives the same error. (But deletes the default crystal report)
I have to close Eclipse and then open it again before I can delete the rpt files properly.
I have not always had this problem. It used to work fine (dont ask what I have done since
cause I would not beable to tell, sorry)
Hopefully someone can help me, as this is driving me insane, and having to stop and start Tomcat every
time I want to deploy a new test version is not really an option.
Cheers
DarrenHi Merry,
Thanks for getting back to me.
My reports within Eclipse seem to be behaving themselves now and dying gracefully without and hassles,
so I dont know what fixed that problem as I have not made any changes or done any updates. One of
those things I guess.
With regards to TOMCAT still having a handle on the reports, As far as I am aware I am putting the
report source in session
Below is my JSP that loads the report
I store report name in session via a servlet and set all the DB connection details in the servlet also.
imports....
try {
String reportName = session.getAttribute("Report").toString();
ReportClientDocument clientDoc = (ReportClientDocument) session.getAttribute(reportName);
if (clientDoc == null) {
clientDoc = new ReportClientDocument();
// Open report
clientDoc.open(reportName, OpenReportOptions._openAsReadOnly);
// ****** BEGIN LOGON DATASOURCE SNIPPET ****************
//Call the process to set all the database detail retrieved from web.xml
// Custom function to set the connection details
ReportFunctions.setConnection(clientDoc);
// ****** END LOGON DATASOURCE SNIPPET ****************
// Store the report document in session
session.setAttribute(reportName, clientDoc);
// ****** BEGIN CONNECT CRYSTALREPORTPAGEVIEWER SNIPPET ****************
// Create the CrystalReportViewer object
CrystalReportViewer crystalReportPageViewer = new CrystalReportViewer();
//set the reportsource property of the viewer
IReportSource reportSource = clientDoc.getReportSource();
crystalReportPageViewer.setReportSource(reportSource);
// set viewer attributes
crystalReportPageViewer.setOwnPage(true);
crystalReportPageViewer.setOwnForm(true);
crystalReportPageViewer.setDisplayGroupTree(false);
crystalReportPageViewer.setHasToggleGroupTreeButton(false);
crystalReportPageViewer.setHasPrintButton(false);
crystalReportPageViewer.setEnableDrillDown(false);
// Process the report
crystalReportPageViewer.processHttpRequest(request, response, application, null);
// ****** END CONNECT CRYSTALREPORTPAGEVIEWER SNIPPET ****************
} catch (ReportSDKExceptionBase e) {
out.println(e);
So far its very basic.
How best can I kill and clean up once the web page is closed. I have tried a few options but dont seem to
know the best way,
I tried "onbeforeunload" but I dont know if this is the best practice,
I have a session listener with sessionDestroyed but have not learnt how to envoke this correctly, or atleast when to correctly call it. And then I dont know how to clean out any loaded reports from here.
I have used
request.getSession().invalidate();
at the end of my JSP but that destoys everything everytime a user does anything on the page, (selecting any of the buttons on the report)
I am still learning everyday, and so I appoligise for questions that I should really know, am being pushed into the deep end here so trying my best :).
Thanks again.
Cheers
Darren
Sorry for bumping this back the list, but I am at my wits end as how best to "clean out" the reports
once they have been closed or timed out.
Surely there must be a way to release all objects (be it a actaul rpt file or the classes12.jar) once the
reports have been viewed and closed.
Even if there is something I can load via another servlet that destroys anything that has to do
with the main website.
Thanks and again sorry for moving this back up the list. If i get no replies, ill assume this is impossible
and that the only way to upload a new version of a report is to shut the whole Tomcat service and
make the changes.
Cheers
