Number of columns and effect on performance

We are trying to improve the performance of our system and have noticed that the number of columns in our select statements has a dramatic, non-linear effect on the performance we see. For a particular query (with a single record returned) retrieving 10 columns from the table takes about 120 milliseconds, but if we reduce the request to 6 columns the time shrinks to about 18 milliseconds. It doesn't seem to matter which columns we pick, just how many of them are chosen.
We have even been able to retrieve a large number of columns from a table using multiple requests of 5 columns each and see a 2X performance improvement over a single request for all of the columns. Use of prepared statements and setting column types seems to have negligible effect.
Any ideas what we are seeing here and how we might improve the performance without cluttering our code up with these wierd multiple requests? This is happening in the middle of a large system, with a number of other database requests happening other than the ones we have currently instrumented for performance measurements. Don't know if this is some kind of interaction with a cache or what. We are using Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition version 8.1.6.3.0.

  • Generate itab with dynamic number of columns

    I have a method that exports a internal table to excel, XML or HTML, which works fine in many cases.
    Now I want to export some special data that I want to put into an itab first.
    The problem is that both the number of columns and the number of rows are dynamic.

  • DB view with flexible number of columns?

    In my Oracle 10 I have these tables
    Customer table:
    id      customer
    1       John
    2       Bob
    Item table
    id      item_name
    1       itemA
    2       itemB
    3       itemC
    4       itemD
    Purchase table:
    id      item_id date    customer_id
    1       3       070202  2
    2       6       070203  5
    ...I'd like to create a view like this:
            itemA   itemB   itemC   itemD   ...
    John    3       4       0       0       ...
    Bob     0       3       0       0       ...
    ...The view showed John purchased itemA 3 times, item B 4 times. Bob purchased itemB 3 times. This assume each customer only by one item at a time, which is a reasonable simplification of my situation.
    Such a view (with variable number of columns) is needed not in our web application but also provide an understandable data source for non IT professional to use report software. If my approach of solving this problem is completely wrong, I'd also like to know what's the common practice. Thank you very much in advance!

    I have tried to ask the question in a way that greatly simplify current problem to make it easy for others to understand without having to explain a lot of background information and 'the situation'; it seems I over-simplified the issue to make it even not worth solving or a wrong question being asked. So here I explain the complete problem and look for advice again (be prepared, pretty long description following:). I am a purchased customer of Oracle 10 DB and I reasonably expect being considered as Oracle user looking for help rather than students trying to play smart with assigned data normalization course exercises.
    We are working on a system that collects data from interview results. The questionnaires for the interviews are formatted with a coded question, followed by user's answer to the question, like the following:
         Question Code   Question content   Answer
         H001            ...                123
         H002            ...                45
         H003            ...                33
         H004            ...                66
         H005            ...                4,66
         ...             ...                ...The users answer question with a digit, for some special questions, e.g. H005, they are allowed to answer with a set of digits. There are thousands of interviews each year, the simplest solution to collect the interview answers is to use such a db table:
    simple_db_table:
    id   H001  H002  H003  H004  H005  H006  H007
    1    123   45    33    66    4     82    9
    ...This solution have two problems:
    1. It doesn't properly store answers to questions that requre a set of digits, like H005.
    2. The number of questions and their codes change from one survey to another, but the table have fixed number of columns and column names.
    And two benefit:
    1. With such simple table, people who use report software that directly access oracle db can creat their reports on easy-to-understand data presentation;
    2. calculation based on questionnaire data is simple, e.g. get the average of H007/H009 for questionnaires that have H002 > H003 * 600 would be:
    SELECT SUM(H007) / SUM(H009) FROM simple_db_table WHERE H002 > H003 * 600;Next solution we have normalized tables:
    questionnaire_entry_table:
    id                 NUMBER
    questionnaire_name CHARquestionnaire_definition_table:
    id                 NUMBER
    questionnaire_id   NUMBER
    question_code      CHAR
    question_content   VARHCARinterview_table:
    id                 NUMBER
    questionnaire_id   NUMBER
    date               DATEquestionnaire data table: itv_data
    id                 NUMBER
    interview_id       NUMBER
    question_code      CHAR
    answer             NUMBERWith the new structure, it just turn the problems of simple_db_table to its benefit and simple_db_table's benefit become the problem:
    1. Personnel who use report creation software feel too confused to make report based on such tables, because they do not understand the normalized modeling. In our case, effective training is difficult because there will be many geographically distributed people make reports based on this structure and they have lower IT knowledge than database administrators. These personnel can make reports based on simple_db_table.
    2. calculation based on questionnaire data is very difficult.
    To explain 2, let's take the same example, we still wish to get the average of H007/H009 for questionnaires that have H002 > H003 * 600, my method is:
    setp 1: create a view with by using:
           CREATE VIEW v (id, H002, H003) AS
           SELECT a.itv_id, a.H002, b.H003
             FROM itv_data a, itv_data b
           WHERE a.interviewee_id=b.interviewee_id
             AND a.question_code='H002' AND b.question_code='H003';step 2: create a stored procedure to get the calculation result:
           CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE get_result (result OUT NUMBER) IS
             sh007 NUMBER := 0;
             sh009 NUMBER := 0;
           BEGIN
             SELECT SUM(H007) INTO sh007 FROM itv_data
               WHERE itv_id in (SELECT id FROM v WHERE H002 > H003 * 683);
             SELECT SUM(H009) INTO sh009 FROM itv_data
               WHERE itv_id in (SELECT id FROM v WHERE H002 > H003 * 683);
             idc := sh007/sh009;
           END get_idc;As you can see the calculation become much more complex and might involve overhead.
    There might be better way to calculate the result that I don't know yet. We have some 100 different formulas to calculate different results, so it's important to get them right and efficiently.
    The best solution seems to me is that to create such a view from itv_data and other tables so that to reflect the same structure of simple_db_table. So here comes the question I originally asked how is it possible to create a view with flexible number of columns. I made the very simple example in my original posted message wishing to get an idea of this is possible or the way to go.
    I may be taking a completely wrong approach to attack the problem, e.g. perhaps there is a simpler way to get_result from itv_table and for report creation users I should use a metadata layer on top of the normalized table structure (e.g. by using Metadata Query Language from Pentaho BI). But anyway I'd like to get some insightful ideas from the forum. Again thanks for help in advance.

  • Number of columns of the rows in a ResultSet?

    Hello
    Is there any way to get the amount of columns of the rows in a ResultSet? The values of the columns might be empty, so wasNull() wont work?
    Thanks

    Yes, you can see the number of columns and lots of other info, see ResultSetMetaData. Example:
    ResultSet rs = statement.executeQuery("...");
    ResultSetMetaData rsmd = rs.getMetaData();
    System.out.println("Number of columns: " + rsmd.getColumnCount());Look it up in the API documentation.

  • Increase report size (columns and rows) in portal

    Hi all,
    Hope someone can help me with this.  I don't have any experience administering the reporting portal, hopefully this is an easy question.
    The portal displaying BI queries shows only about 10 columns and 10 rows at a time.  This is annoying since users have to scroll around to see all the rows and columns.  Where can I adjust the number of columns and rows displayed?
    Thanks,
    M.

    Hi M.B.
    Open WAD ( Bex Web Application Designer ) in which , you have assigned BI query. follow the steps for changing no of rows & columns.
    Step 1.    Properties   -  > select Web Items parametes.
    Step 2.   select  Ananlysis
    Step 3.   Scroll down  -> paging  -> here you can change no of rows & columns.
    Hope it will serve your query. If problem solved , closed this thread .

  • Calculate number of columns dinamically in webi report

    Hello,
    I have the following problem.
    I have to develop a report, that it has to show a table that their columns have to be data intervals, and their rows have to be diferent rates.
    Example.
    29/01/2011
    30/01/2012
    31/01/2013
    01/02/2014

    31/01/2014
    23/03/2014

    400
    500
    Amortization

    2
    2
    5
    4
    Fees
    0
    0
    0
    0
    The report has 3 prompts: Start Period Date, End Period Date and Periodicity
    Where  Start Period Date and End Period Date are the interval of dates
    and Periodicity can be one of that values "Annual", "Semiannual", "Quarterly", "Monthly", "Weekly" and "Daily"
    In the example table the promts are:
    Start Period Date: 29/01/2011 (see it in the first column, first row)
    End Period Date: 23/03/2014 (see it in the last column, second row)
    Periodicity: "Annual"
    The problem is how to calculate dinamically (in execution report time) the number of columns to show in the report and their intervals dates.
    The facts view has the following structure (the BBDD is sql server):
    View: loans_schedule
    Columns:
    loan_id --> id to another view named loans that contains all the credit operations.
    reference --> id of one reference in the operation
    maturity_date --> date
    Capital --> rate
    Amortization --> rate
    Interest --> rate
    Fees --> rate
    Ex of view data (note that the report has to aggregate by maturity_date in the date intervals of the report table):
    Loan_id
    Reference
    Maturity_date
    Capital
    Amortization
    Interest

    Operation beginning date --> when operation starts
    Operation end date --> when operation ends
    The problem is how can generate dinamically the number of columns and agregate the rates into each column.
    I have achieved to generate dinamically the number of columns by creating a table (isolated in the universe) that has a dimension and its values are a sequence the numbers (from 1 to 1000) and this let me to show dinamically the number of columns regarding the interval of dates introduced by the user through the report promts.
    The problem is when I try to agreegate the rates information to show in the corresponding column...
    I do the following formula:
         if maturity_date between (Column_Start_Date and Column_End_Date) then
              [Rate]
         else
              0
    But this returns always 0, and I think that the cause is that the table that I use for calculating the columns are not linked with my facts view.
    When I drag the "Maturity_Date" to the table that has the columns dinamically, Webi tells me that the objects are incompatible.
    Can you help me?
    Note: it is posible to add columns to the views if it helps to solve the problem.
    Thanks
    Pilar

    Hi,
    There are no direct oracle function that could be used to get the desired results.
    However you could try using something like
    SELECT COUNT( *)
    FROM
    (SELECT ROWNUM RNUM
    FROM ALL_OBJECTS
    WHERE ROWNUM <= TO_DATE('&1') - TO_DATE('&2') + 1
    WHERE TO_CHAR(TO_DATE('&2') + RNUM - 1, 'DY') NOT IN('SAT', 'SUN');
    Give the two date ranges that you want to look for with the highiest one first. i.e say for example - 01-FEB-2011 to 31-DEC-2010 would give the working days in JAN. However note that you might have to check for holidays related to that country/region (which could be added as a seperate table).
    If you need to get an extra day in addition to the weekends, please give the dates accordingly
    SQL> SELECT COUNT( *)
    2 FROM
    3 (SELECT ROWNUM RNUM
    4 FROM ALL_OBJECTS
    5 WHERE ROWNUM <= TO_DATE('01-FEB-2011') - TO_DATE('01-JAN-2011') + 1
    6 )
    7 WHERE TO_CHAR(TO_DATE('01-JAN-2011') + RNUM - 1, 'DY') NOT IN('SAT', 'SUN');
    COUNT(*)
    22

  • How to clone data with in Table with dynamic 'n' number of columns

    Hi All,
    I've a table with syntax,
    create table Temp (id number primary key, name varchar2(10), partner varchar2(10), info varchar2(20));
    And with data like
    insert itno temp values (sequence.nextval, 'test', 'p1', 'info for p1');
    insert into temp values (sequence.nextval, 'test', 'p2', 'info for p2');
    And now, i need to clone the data in TEMP table of name 'test' for new name 'test1' and here is my script,
    insert into Temp  select sequence.nextval id, 'test1' name, partner, info from TEMP where name='test1';
    this query executed successfully and able to insert records.
    The PROBLEM is,
    if some new columns added in TEMP table, need to update this query.
    How to clone the data with in the table for *'n' number of columns and*
    some columns with dynamic data and remaining columns as source data.
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
    My Scenario, is we have a Game Details table. When ever some Game get cloned, we need to add new records in to that Table for the new Game.
    As, the id will be primary key, this should populate from a Sequence (in our system, we used this) and Game Name will be new Game Name. And data for other columns should be same as Parent Game.
    when ever business needs changes, there will be some addition of new columns in Table.
    And with the existing query,
    insert into Temp (id, name, partner, info) select sequence.nextval id, 'test1' name, partner, info from TEMP where name='test'_
    will successfully add new rows but new added columns will have empty data.
    so, is there any way to do this, i mean, some columns with sequence values and other columns with existing values.
    One way, we can do is, get ResultSet MetaData (i'm using Java), and parse the columns. prepare a query in required format.
    I'm looking for alternative ways in query format in SQL.
    Thanks & Regards
    PavanPinnu.

  • How to fix skewed table columns and rows after re-import XML

    My question is regarding XML Import in InDesign CS3.
    I have a XML that has a table of 5 columns and 5 rows, when I import it into InDesign, the table shows up fine with 5 columns and 5 rows. However when I revise my table to have an additional column, and re-import the XML file, the table gets updated, but instead of with an additional column, it gets 'appended' with an additional row instead (InDesign seems to blindly replace each cell from left to right, top to bottom, and ends up with 6 rows instead). The XML file specifies the number of columns and rows (5 and 5 before, 5 and 6 after), why doesn't InDesign recognize it and automatically add a new column when I re-import the file?  Is this problem fixed in CS5.5? Is there a script to fix this?
    Here is an example of my old XML vs new XML:

    What I mean is, right now there is a "workaround" which requires a user to manually add an extra column before re-importing the XML (with an extra column), otherwise the results get skewed. If by providing a script we can simply ask the user to "run" it, it would be a more "acceptable" solution.
    Right. So, one solution would be to use Convert Text to Tables. If you find that works for you, then you can script it.
    That's why I asked you...
    Of course if nothing is required from the user other than simply re-importing, then that would be the best solution.
    Well, one could imagine a script that was attached to the re-import command, or to the link update notification, but probably the first step is to get something that works reasonably well without automating it completely. Especially because triggers to run scripts silently can introduce hard-to-debug problems.
    Sure we can switch to use "CALS table and see if this works. The question is, why should we need to? In the 2nd XML there is clearly a different "aid:tcols" value, and yet InDesign seems to ignore it and assume the same # of columns? This sounds like an Indesign bug, can someone confirm? Is there any plans to fix this?
    Not to be snarky, but do you want it to work or not? There are the tools you have and the tools you wish you had, and you can't really do much with the ones you wish you had. I'm kind of assuming you are looking for a solution today, not a solution in 2013.
    Yes,  I believe two of us have confirmed this appears to be a bug.
    Plans to fix? Well, we can't really tell you. You could try asking Adobe, but that's not easy information to get out. But you can certainly open a support case at http://adobe.com/go/supportportal and ask. It's not like we have special information here...
    But you're probably better off filing a bug first, in that same fashion.
    But let's assume no one had filed the bug. CS6 is expected in the March/April 2012 timeframe. That means that they're probably just putting the finishing touches on it right now, and it's going to be very difficult to fix things in it now. So then the earliest you'd likely get it fixed in CS6.5/CS7/whatever which presumably comes out by 2Q2013, and that's assuming Adobe decides to fix it...
    I also can't find much documentation on how to update my table to a "CALS table", any examples?
    Try this thread:

  • ROWS to COLUMNS and COLUMNS to ROWS (Earlier Docs/Threads Didn't help)

    Hi Guys,
    I have gone through the earlier threads and documents on this. But didn't help.
    In lots of cases they have used DECODE statement. However, it works if you know the number of columns and rows...what if we are not sure of the number of records? How does it work?
    Please direct me to any thread or any other documents.

  • Does Coloring Of Rows and Column in Query effect the Performance of Query

    Hi to all,
    Does Coloring of Rows and Column in Query via WAD or Report designer , will effect the performance of query.
    If yes, then how.
    What are the key factor should we consider while design of query in regards of Query performance.
    I shall ne thankful to you for this.
    Regards
    Pavneet Rana

    There will not be any significance perofrmance issue for Colouring the rows or columns...
    But there are various performance parameters which should be looked into while designing a query...
    Hope this PPT helps you.

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

    Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
    When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

    Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
              Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              About file quarantine in OS X
    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
    I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
    If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
        used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
        requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • TableView performance with large number of columns

    I notice that it takes awhile for table views to populate when they have a large number of columns (> 100 or so subjectively).
    Running VisualVM based on CPU Samples, I see that the largest amount of time is spent here:
    javafx.scene.control.TableView.getVisibleLeafIndex() 35.3% 8,113 ms
    next is:
    javfx.scene.Parent$1.onProposedChange() 9.5% 2,193 ms
    followed by
    javafx.scene.control.Control.loadSkinClass() 5.2% 1,193 ms
    I am using JavaFx 2.1 co-bundled with Java7u4. Is this to be expected, or are there some performance tuning hints I should know?
    Thanks,
    - Pat

    We're actually doing some TableView performance work right now, I wonder if you could file an issue with a simple reproducible test case? I haven't seen the same data you have here in our profiles (nearly all time is spent on reapplying CSS) so I would be interested in your exact test to be able to profile it and see what is going on.
    Thanks

  • Maximum number of rows and columns in data form

    Hi,
    I wanted to know if there is a limitation to the number of rows and columns that can be displayed in a data form, in Hyperion planning 11.1.2.1 ?
    And what would be the most appropriate number of rows and columns to be included for optimum performance.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    While its a fun fact to determine how much one can stuff into a web form, the reality is: how much can a user reasonably consume in a web form?
    And what would be the most appropriate number of rows and columns to be included for optimum performance
    You will find that the answer to this is by "what design makes a web form most usable?" And no, the users don't really know what they want from a design perspective, they see it in their head, but usually what they ask for is something that would look entirely different (huge).
    The next thing to think about is the use of member selection functions in the page axis. IDescendants(Entity) in a dropdown could cause issues just as easily as too many rows - and again make the drop down unusable for a user.
    If your question is a bit more technical, then consider this (somewhat oversimplified): Web forms are constructed by a process on the server. Objects are created based on the form's definition and used by the process that builds the form. The process uses Cartesian looping (lots of iterations) to construct the form cell by cell, starting at the top left and finishing up in the bottom right. If the form has a million cells on it, then the loop and all the code within it runs a million times. The capability of the server has a lot to do with how well it can handle this request, and how many it can handle at one time.
    The result of this is gobs of HTML and JavaScript. All of this has to be sent over a network to the requesting client. The client starts receiving the web page code and has to render it in the browser and run the JavaScript. The ability to do this is limited by the browser, the OS, and the hardware that the client is running on.
    And that's just rendering the page for use.
    Now it has to be interacted with on the client machine, and changes parsed, packaged, and sent back to the server.
    So the technical answer is, there can be many limitations to how many rows and columns a data form can have - none of which can truly be anticipated by anyone. This is why I put the part about usability first in this post.

    Robb Salzmann
