Numbers locks up on "Formatting cells..."

I have uncovered what must be a massive bug in iWork Numbers for Mac. This is now happening to me all of the time. Periodically when I apply a simple formatting to a column, such as currency or number format, the app shows a modal dialog that says "Formatting cells..." and it locks up. The formatting process never completes. The sheet only has a hundred or so rows in it. Nothing else can be done in the app, including reverting to a previous version or anything else.
Numbers doesn't show "not responding" status in the "Force Quit Applications". If i force quit the app, then the worksheet file becomes corrupted. As you know, the options to revert to a previous version only work from within the app with the worksheet loaded and since it won't open I can't do that. So all my recently completed changes are lost and I have to use time machine to restore a backup.
This is maddening and I could forgive the app if it only happened once, but its now happening on a regular basis. I can't believe that this hasn't been covered here in the support forums before, but I can't find anything remotely similar. I'm on OS X Lion with the latest version of Numbers purchased and updated through the Mac App Store.

The same thing happened to me and I called the co. and they told me to send it in, (bad hard dri've)not only that the head phone jack was loose so i only got like half the sound, either high's or lows it sucked. I only had it for a month!!

I'm sorry for the intrusion on this thread. I had only made a simple comment, and then others responded. It was not my intention, especially since the original question was marked as answered. I will direct responses to any comments I make in fture postings that deviate from the OP's question to a newly created topic if I need a response, if not, I will just add a statement at the end of my comments to please not respond.
As to your diagram, it is the ability to select the non-contiguous cells, and then be able to simulataneously select a specific part of the border edge, and then be able to change them all at once that I was after. That is something that is not possible in Numbers. It seems that in your diagram the "before", was attained by selecting each cell one at a time, and changing its border edge, one at a time. Then, in the "after", selecting the non-contiguous cells and changing the "Stroke" settings for the lines was attained simultaneously since that is possible in Numbers.
If I am correct in how you attained the results in your diagram, that wasn't really what I was trying to achieve, since if the option were not grayed out, it would only select the same border edge on all selected cells. If I am incorrect, then I would like to have your input.

Libreoffice Calc crashes when click on "Format cells" - "Numbers"

As the title says, Calc crashes every time when I do right click -> "Format cells" -> "Numbers" for any files (including newly created ones). This is still the case even after I deleted the whole .openoffice.org folder.
I have tried to reinstall all the packages, but the problem continues.
Do others have the same problem, and is there a solution?

The latest libreoffice in extra, on gnome.
I have been trying to find a solution in the forum of openoffice.org. It turns out that this is a longtime issue which have appeared on different versions. Some people solved it by blanking the user profile, but this does not work for me.. Anyway, this does not seem to be a problem of Arch packages, though upgrading to the newest version did make it happen by chance..

"Time" in Numbers is always "Time of Day", and is always part of a Date and Time value. "Amount of Time" is a Duration value, which may be displayed in a similar format to "Time of Day," but is a different type of value.

Like many others I am switching from Excel on a pc to Numbers on a Mac and I can't seem to figure this stuff(for now..)out.
1. How can I make the format cell bar appear and STAY or at least make it accessible ?
2. If I click the T I can get the format "bar" but it puts the word "text" in a random cell and
     I can't seem to get rid of it without deleting(using the delete key) the cell border too.
     Can someone please tell be how to format a border for a cell without the text ?
3. Speaking of borders....I can move the border(still with the word "text" in it though..)but the line size
     does not seem to match the cell size. So....how can I either squeeze up the border size to match the
     cell size or I am willing to change the cell size too so it will match the border. But I don't know how to
     do that either...So...more help please....
I have Numbers 3.2 and am using a newer iMac.

I am trying to add a border to a cell with numerical data in it, after it has been summed from the cells above.
I do not know if I will add the border or not until the sum appears, if that provides any more context to this.
Here's one way to do this. I've already entered my SUM function and decide I want a top border. So, with the cell selected, I go here (Format > Cell pane at right):
It's a little different from Excel, but convenient when you get used to it.
One thing you should take advantage of in Numbers: Header and Footer Row, and Header Column. Here, you could convert row 5 to Footer Row.
Then the formula here simplifies to =SUM(A) and you can easily add body rows in the table without having to worry about adjusting the formula.

Can Acrobat XI Pro create a form that will retain Excel formatted cells for filling in?

You will need to set the form in the PDF.
Facsimile signatures are acceptable for legal purposes. You need to use a digital certificate that 3rd parties can verify but they maybe able to contain a signature image.

If you want to include blank cells as zero, type this formula in B2 (and Fill Down)
=IF(A2<>0,A2,0)
Numbers 3 will change the formula to
=IF(A2≠0,A2,0)
Yeah, right! but that is Numbers 3.
And the answer (6/4) is 1.5. Correct!

Does anyone know of any automator workflow to export Numbers documents in PDF format? I tried this program: Convert to PDF 1.2

The description of the tool which you tried clearly states :

*_Convert all of your text files to PDF_. This action uses the underlying cups printing system ability to convert files, it’s a simple front end to the command line tool cupsfilter.*
As far as I know, but maybe you don't, *_a Numbers document isn't a text file._*
I already posted a script exporting Numbers documents as PDF.
Here is an enhanced version which apply only to Numbers '09 (or maybe higher) :

HT201279 convert Numbers file to Excel format

When I convert my Numbers file to Excel format, each worksheet name is appended with "Table - 1".
Each subsequent conversion adds another "Table - 1" to the name of every worksheet as well.
How do I stop this from happening?

If you are exporting then importing repeatedly, it will keep appending these things to the names.
Numbers document with two sheets, both with a single table called "Table 1" will get exported as two Excel worksheets: "Sheet 1 - Table 1" and "Sheet 2 - Table 1". It creates a separate Excel worksheet for every table and names each with the sheet and table name.
Reimporting this to Numbers will result in a Numbers document with a sheet called "Sheet 1 - Table 1" and another called "Sheet 2 - Table 1" and both will contain a single table called "Table 1". It imports each Excel worksheet as a Numbers Sheet and creates a table for each called "Table 1".
It really doesn't work well to import & export repeatedly. Much better to use one app or the other.

what is the path level of your sap console. if you are using the old one the maximum is 231. check in market place and update. it can accept up to 1024.

My requirement is to have certain fields of a cell as text and amount fields should be in number format.
How to format a cell in Excel in OLE method of downloading data to excel.
For example I have plant field whose value is 0002 in internal table while coming to excel it is showing as 2 .
I want that field to be shown as 0002.(text format)
Material field whose value in internal table is 000000000000000051 is shown as 51 which has to be shown as
000000000000000051.(text format).
Amount field should be in number format so that totalling is possible .
So I need some cells in text format and some in number format.
Please suggest a sloution.

Automatically start with numbers lock on

when i start up pc the numbers lock is always OFF, so, to enter my 4 digit pin i always need to push the numbers lock key, FIRST.
can't this numbers lock key be enabled (on boot) automatically, so all i need type is my 4 digit pin?
Can't seem to locate an option in the win7 control panel to set this up with auto caps lock ON.

What happens when you try?

When i paste some copied color text or formatted cells from excel to my mail draft while composing a mail, it is being pasted as plain text. No back groud or text colors are copied to it. Please suggest a possible solution for this issue.

Colors & Formatted Cells from Excel application can not be copied to my mail composer as it is. Only Plain text is copied.

Wish I could be king. But you described the problem perfectly and I am still but a pawn. All I can say is that I trashed the mail preferences (com.apple.mail.plist) on my Mac Mini, and now my MacBook seems to work right.
Sorry. :>) But that is the truth... The MacBook now has actually sometimes displayed pasted text in its actual, different, font and style as I paste it into a partially composed new mail message.
In other (more rational) words, the problem seems to be tied to pasting only certain types of text. I have not been able yet to pinpoint what. Yes, frustrating indeed. The only work-around has been to re-train my fingers to command-option-shift V, for "paste and match style" (like you, I do not want to always use only plain text). Maybe someone else will eventually weigh in with a real solution. The solution I want is just to be able to consistently see any font variations within my message before I send the email.
The info about the different ppi scales between Windows and Mac is interesting, although not relevant to this particular problem. It does explain the apparent overall size differences I have seen before.

step to reproduce the bug :
- launch libreoffice
- select a cell
- select the menu "format cells"
- libreoffice calc will crash immediatly ( libreoffice quits with no error message on the console )

XCELSIUS-Comoponent Spreadsheet-table: formatting cells

Hi,
I don't see how to format Cells in a spreadsheet-table. For instance right right-justified. I would expect in the table the same format as defined in the excel-sheet. But spreadsheet-table doesn't care at all about these definitions in the EXCEL-Sheet. I used the template "Income sheet", and didn't succeed here either. What is the trick?

Hey Alfred, you are right there is an issue with this component ..you need to re-align the component every time you make changes in the back end excel table. To get more info on this you can go through this article...
