Numerous ATV DAAP ports to MacBook Pro

This is related to Apple TV3, sorry for the long intro.
My internet connectivity pretty much *****.
Speed Tests show I'm receiving 16M download as advertised.
When I try to connect to a web page, it often freezes and only partially downloads
Using "netstat" or "network utility" I often find a number of TCP connections in SYN_SENT state
And when I say "a number" as many as 111 connections with maybe 1/3 of them in SYN_SENT.
While this hardly seems like a lot, it leads me to question why so many, which in turn leads me to
find these connections between my MacBook Pro (Mavericks) and Apple TV 3.  Why so many?
I do NOT have Home Sharing turned on for iTunes on my Laptop, yet it shows up as one of the
libraries available to the ATV3.  And I can play the TV shows available on the laptop through
the ATV3.  The ATV3 is connected via ethernet to an Airport Express.
(As an aside, the mini-mac (2009 model running Mavericks) which is the iTunes Library (12.1) i want to share
will often require me to reboot the ATV3 if it hasn't been accessed for more than 12 hours)
Although it should not matter, I wonder if the UBEE cable modem router (which is
providing DHCP) is seeing these connections and is hitting some limit on port forwarding
which is (part of) the cause of my lousy internet service.
Anyway, why so many ESTABLISHED connections
and why do only some of these listed connections include the system name
(they are all between the same ATV3 and MBP)
tcp4       0      0  192.168.0.8.daap       192.168.0.254.54603    ESTABLISHED

To replicate the problem and provide some packet exchanges...
I have iTunes running on my laptop.
I wake up my ATV and navigate to the "computers" menu.
The ATV claims that there is no Homesharing turned on on any computers.
-- There is a minimac with iTunes running and HomeSharing on
-- My laptop has iTunes running with HomeSharing Off
The ATV is restarted, when I navigate the the "computers menu"
-- both the mini-mac and the laptop show as options on the ATV.  (The laptop should not be there)
-- 3 DAAP sockets are opened on my laptop using IPv4
I ignore the ATV for about an hour waiting for it to go to sleep.  (meaning there is no output to the TV HDMI)
-- DAAP sockets start getting open on my laptop and not closed
-- Both IPv6 and IPv4 sockets are being opened
-- There are "huge bursts" of DAAP packet exchanges (using tcpdump) between the laptop and the ATV.  (over 200 packets per "burst")
-- Between 12:29 and 12:53 there were 12 Bursts capturing a total of 1175 DAAP packets
-- there are now 34 daap sockets open, they are both IPv4 and IPv6 sockets.
-- nap shows 17 IPv6 addresses associated with the MAC address of the ATV for example:
     2605:e000:1103:8102:c15e:ece6:8835:4627 68:d9:3c:7d:a2:3f en1 23h51m56s S
     2605:e000:1103:8102:cc7c:6364:4898:4a64 68:d9:3c:7d:a2:3f en1 23h35m13s S
-- arp -a shows the ATV address associated with the MAC address of the Apple Airport Extreme (tower)
     ? (10.0.1.21) at 90:72:40:c:8c:9f on en1 ifscope [ethernet]
-- tcpdump shows DAAP packets being exchanged to the MAC address of both the AEX and the ATV.  (I only tracked DAAP packets)
-- Some bursts are initiated by the ATV
-- Some bursts are initiated by the laptop
--- bursts initiated by the laptop are sometimes sent to the ATV MAC address and sometimes to the AEC MAC
bursts that start out being sent to the AEC MAC will end transition to the ATV MAC
If someone wants to review the tcpdump of the packet bursts, I'll be happy to share the file via some other method than posting it here.
When I wake up the ATV, some DAAP sockets time out.  Although it takes a while.
The Bursts of packets have stopped but there is still an exchange of packets.
These exchanges are both IPv6 and IPv4 and appear to be initiated by the laptop.
I'm guessing they are closing the sockets.   However, many of the sockets remain open
or in CLOSE_WAIT state and there haven't been any packets exchanged for the last 30 minutes

Kind of off-topic, and perhaps should be on a separate thread...
This show that two IP addresses have been assigned to the ATV.  The first is the wireless (I assume) MAC on the ATV.
The second shows the ethernet interface on the ATV.  The ATV is connected via ethernet.  The ATV is connected via ethernet.
It knows about the wireless network, but I don't think it should be using it.

I still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images!  Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

ITunes shows iPad only for a few seconds. iPad displays alternately: Apple logo, battery w/slim red band, then battery w/1% charged information. How can I get it to charge beyond 1% so I can proceed to troubleshoot?

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.

At this point I am not sure if I should replace the battery and hope for the best, or just junk the phone, I cannot really sell it if I cannot reset it...

All in All - I think we need to keep an eye on what the Vudu box is doing. We will never know what the studio's contacts say, but we can compare what the Vudu box is doing to see if Apple is falling behind.
Apple really needs to push HD. The Vudu box allows you to download HD movies – why can’t Apple? I know Apple is concern about confusing its customers. I do think HD buyers of content understand the limitations of iPhone and iPods. Apple can sell you an HD movie then allows you to down convert via iTunes if you choose too. Then this will allow you to play it on your iPod/iPhone and save Apple in its bandwidth from having you download two files, (one HD, one for iPod/iPhone). Also the DRM will still be in place, so everyone will be happy.

HDMI port on Macbook pro suddenly stopped working. Is it expensive to fix?

No one here can tell you what the prices are to repair things. We are just users such as yourself.
What makes you think your HDMI port is dead?
You can take it to a Genius Bar for a FREE diagnosis, make an appointment first.

  • Connectivity Issues with USB 3 ports on macbook pro

Hi,  I have a zoom r24 which is no longer working as an audio interface with my new macbook pro.  I have read a lot about issues with USB 2 devices not being compatible with USB 3 ports on the macs. This seems to be midi as well as audio devices.  Can anyone recommend or point me to a list of supported devices for both audio and midi which are guaranteed to work with a late 2013 macbook pro retina display.  I cant afford a thunderbolt device.  Thanks steve

Just a wild thought here, but have you tried inserting a powered USB 2.0 hub between the MacBook and the interface?

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. Click here for more information on Mini DisplayPort connections and adapters.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues related to video external displays.

  • Ethernet port on MacBook Pro only works under certain conditions

Since I've purchased my MacBook Pro over two years ago now with an initial installment of OSX 10.5.x, I've had a small annoyance if while the OS was up and running and my physical network interface was disconnected and reconnected, a connection could not be reestablished until I shutdown, restart or put my Mac to sleep and woke it back up with the cable connected to the ethernet port. It would randomly work as it should if I connected and disconnected it over and over again until the machine decided I've stimulated it enough to allow me to use it. But it's recently become a real annoyance for me since the tab on my longest ethernet cable broke and it no longer locks it in place and now the slightest budge displaces the cable and I have to put the laptop to sleep often to reestablish a connection.
I would opt to Wi-Fi, but my Mac (surprise, surprise) out of 4 other laptops is the only one whose signal is too weak to use where I use them most. I've reinstalled the OS once to no avail months ago and the problem persisted after downgrading to Slowleopard a day after it's release.
Anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello DavidJoyce
Best thing to do is to buy a new Cat 6 Ethernet cable.

  • Need help one USB Port on MacBook Pro not working

Its been a weak now and im getting tired of my MacBook pro USB not reading anything.. It wont read/connect usb drives, IPods/IPhones/IPads, and Android phones. I have tried the PRAM and SMC resets and nothing has worked i even left my Macbook pro off for a whole day. ITS ONLY ONE PORT NOT WORKING, i took it to bestbuy because its closest to me but geek squad just did what i explained above and told me get a USB hub and NO! i want to fix this issue... Anyone has had this happen can you let me know if its because the USB port is no longer working or a software issue... Also i keep getting this notification telling me USB devices disabled draining to much power but i have nothing connected!!
ps- my MacBook Pro is getting very hot fast and it happens when im not even using it, i get home and it very hot could there be another hardware failure i dont leave applications open when i sleep it.

It sounds like you might have a hardware problem. Your best bet is to go to the Genius Bar. The evaluation is free, and they'll fix it if you're under Applecare. Back up your stuff first though.

  • Just one USB port on MacBook Pro 15"

Hi, I just got a MacBook Pro 15" 2.33GHz. I may be silly but I find it has only one USB port! This is killing me because I need at least two USB port to connect my mouse and iPhone. Do I missed something?
    Thanks,
    ff

Both USB ports are on the left side, right next to each other.
Maybe you have too many things plunged in and you can't see it or something is covering it up. Reminds me of this:

  • One of the USB ports on MacBook Pro does not work.

    Hi,
I purchased a MacBook Pro in Jan '11. Both the USB ports on the laptop were working fine. Recently, I have noticed, any external device connected to the USB port, towards the battery side does not recognize the connection.
Any solutions ?. Is this defect covered under warranty ?.
    Regards
    Anil Madan

    Anil,
    Try resetting the SMC.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • USB Ports on Macbook Pro (Late 2011) no longer working...

    Hey all,
I know there are numurous posts on this but none have seemed to help me.
Today both of my USB ports have stopped working. Two months ago the one next to the thunderbolt port would go in and out and today both of them just don't work at all except to supply power. I can still charge my phone with them but thats it, nothing is recognized when I plug it in.
I've tried the PRAM reset, the SMC reset, manual reset, regular reset, updating the OSX to the latest and nothing has helped. I've read I might have to replace the logic board but I really hope I don't have to resort to that.
I've posted the reports from the System Information and an app called Etrecheck. Hopefully someone will be able to pinpoint the issue.

    Thanks for the response,
    1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
    2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
    3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
    And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x

  • How do I see or change ports on macbook pro

I am having problems getting into a Cisco Meetingplace room and one of the suggestions is to change ports. How do I view the ports on a Macbook Pro?

you don't see ports. Normally you can set ports in the relevant application, like Chat apps, or Mail, in the account settings.

  • Ports for Macbook Pro to monitor screen

I just bought a Macbook Pro 2 Ghz i7, 15" laptop and it doesn't seem to have connections(ports) to a separate monitor screen, what can I do?
    Thanks!
    Frank

Your MBP has a Thunderbolt port for external video connections. You can connect an Apple Thunderbolt Display to it with a Thunderbolt cable, or any other display using a mini-Displayport adapter to whatever sort of connection your monitor offers: VGA, DVI or HDMI.
