NVGRE Gateway Cluster Problem

Hello
We have following setup:
Management Hyper-V hosts running WAP, SPF and SCVMM 2012 R2 components
Gateway Hyper-V host: single node gateway hyper-v host, configured as a single node cluster to be able to join extra hardware in the future
this Hyper-V host runs 2 Windows Server Gateway VMs,configured as a failover cluster.
The following script is used to deploy these windows server gateway VMs as a high available NVGRE gateway service:
http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/mscholman/2015/01/hyper-v-nvgre-gateway-toolkit/
two tenant Hyper-V hosts running VMs which are using network virtualization
The setup is completed successfully and when creating a tenant in WAP and creating VM network for this tenant using NAT, the VMs of this tenant are accessible and can access Internet using the HA Gateway cluster.
The Gateway Hyper-V host and NVGRE Gateway VMs are running in a DMZ zone, in a DMZ Active Directory Domain.
Management and Tenant Hyper-V hosts, incl all Management VMs, are running in a dedicated internal Active Directory domain.
Problems start when we failover the Windows Server Gateway service to the other VM node of the NVGRE Gateway cluster. We see in the lookup records on the Gateway Hyper-V host that the MAC address of the gateway record for tenants is updated with the new
MAC address of the VM node running the gateway service.
But in SCVMM, apparently, this record is not updated. The tenant hosts still use the old MAC address of the other Gateway VM node.
When looking in the SCVMM database, we can also see that in the VMNetworkGateway table that the record representing the gateway of the tenant, still points to the MAC address of the PA network adapter of the other node of the NVGRE Gateway cluster, not to the
new node on which the gateway service is running after initiating a failover.
On the tenant hyper-v hosts, the lookup record for the gateway also points to the old node as well.
When manually changing the record in the VMNetworkGateway table to the new MAC address, and refreshing the tenant hosts in SCVMM, all starts working again and the tenant VMs can access the gateway again.
Anybody else facing this issue? Or is running a NVGRE Gateway cluster on a single Hyper-V node not supported?
To be complete, the deployed VMs running the gateway service are not configured as HA VMs.
Regards
Stijn

If i understand your post correctly you have a single Hyper-V Host running 2 GW VM's. I think the problem is that when you deploy a HA VM Gateway Cluster it wants to create a Cluster Resource (PA IP Address) on the Hyper-V host as well. So when you run 2
hyper-v hosts and 2 gw vm's and you move the active role to another host it will move the Provider Address to the other Hyper-V host as well. I believe this is by design. You should ask yourself also the question why running 2 vm's in a cluster on the same
node ;-)
I would recommend to use 2 node Hyper-V Host Cluster (This is needed for the HA PA Address, And not necessary for your GW VM's )
Then run the deployment toolkit again. Now when that's done again, take a close look on how the Active node on the Hyper-V host has the corresponding PA assiogned on that Hyper-V host. Then do a failover, refresh the cluster manager and take notice
of the PA address that has moved along to the other Hyper-V host that is the active one. It is diffuclt to explain, in a couple of sentences but i hope you have the opportunity to build the 2nd Hyper-V host aswell and create a cluste.
Side note: if you want to keep the excising VM Gateway cluster. remove all gateways from VM Networks and remove the Gateway service from VMM. Then provision the second Hyper-V Host, Configure Cluster, Live migrate 1 GW VM node to it. Reconfigure
Shared VHDX for quorum and csv and  then add back the network service again. Don't try to leave it as a network service in VMM and move the VM to another node. It will not work when failover.

    Hi!
I have two Ironport C160 in cluster mode, tonight one of them has stopped working, and I can not access this on, but it responds to ping.
In the system log I found only the following line:

    My version is:6.5.3-007
What I can log to find the cause of the problem?
How I can find out what the problem?
    How can you solve?
    Thank you very much

Well, "queuereset" is not a valid command, what you mean is "resetqueue", which I would strongly not recomment  to use without having a very good reason.Because this command removes all messages from the workqueue, delivery queues, and quarantines. There are usually less destructive ways to fix a cluster problem.
BTW, version 5.5 has long been gone, so we won't need to reference any bugs from there any more.

  • Network Switch requirements behind a NVGRE Gateway

    Hello there,
I'm looking forward to set up a nice System Center 2012 R2 Environment, with one Major Site where the Infrastructure for System Center and the Virtual Machines reside. There are another 2 Sites which will get an NVGRE Gateway so I can have the same IP Setup
both sites matched to the deployed VMs. We will call the Site where all the big Hardware sits Site A, Site B and C only will have a NVGRE Gateway so that physical Machines on Site B and C can Access their VM's with their locally assigned IP Addresses and not
what Site A is configured with.
My question seems a bit silly but I haven't found any answer to this (neither in the Hybrid Cloud Guide nor somewhere else)
If I deploy the following layout on all 3 sites (simplified), what features will the Switch on the local site need? Any certain numbers like ARP Entries or anything?
Layout: [Hardware] ---- [Switch] ---- [NVGRE Gateway] ---- [ISP]
My ISP has assured me I'm on full IPv4/6 Dualstack and I can have an ASN on the site where the Hardware is. The other two sites are simple enough ADSL IPv4 Lines where the x86 commodity Hardware NVGRE Gateways will be set up. I understand that eBGP will
not be possible with this kind of Setup but iBGP should be working?
So do I need something like a Juniper EX-4200+ Series Switch on each Site behind the NVGRE Gateway or will be a basic L2(+ ?) Switch do the Job on the local Networks or do I need to watch out for some specific Switch supported features to get going?
Thanks for your help in advance guys!

So over 100 Views and no one can tell me if a simple L2 Switch will do on the local only fabric or not? Do I need a MS Support Case just to get a clarification on that?

  • Siebel Gateway Cluster

    Hi ,
How we can test the gateway cluster from application GUI, whether session hijack can be handled ? if the node restrart happens ?
    Scenario which I followed :
    - step 1. When gatway server is running on NODE1, I'm launching the siebel application and I'm enabling the compgrp in server manager configuration screen
step 2 : Stopping the services on Node1, cluster started the services on NODE2, when I tried to enable or disable the compgrp it is throwing the some error message.
steps 3 : when I logout and launch the application, I'm able to enable the compgrp.
The workaround is log out and log into the application or this is the expected behavior.

The official answer is no: Active/Active Siebel Server Installation [ID 879472.1]
For Siebel 8 the Gateway hardly acts as a Gateway anymore.
Clients connecting are routed directly by the webserver without any action from the Gateway.
Well, I think the Gateway is still responsible for User Preferences and Siebel Server Configuration, but it doesn't prohibit users from connecting.
You can see this by shutting down the Gateway in a running (test) Siebel 8 environment and try to connect.
You do need the Gateway when you want to start a Siebel Application Server.
For Siebel 8 you won't need big servers for the Gateway.
So I don't think you are going to gain much from pursuing an Active/Active setup.
And as the document points out the sizing will probably be the same for Active/Passive and Active/Active.

  • NVGRE Gateway Security and Firewalls?

    Hi,
I am setting up a Hyper-v NVGRE gateway on Windows Server 2012 R2. Now from what I have read the gateways have 3 NICs and one interface dedicated to public IP addresses, I haven't been able to find any information about how the gateways are secured.
Can they be protected behind hardware firewalls?
Are they already secured at the time of install out of the box?
Do we have to use and configure the windows firewall on the gateway for protection?
Any best practice out there, real like experience / examples or some documentation on this subject as I am struggling?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Microsoft Partner

    Hi,
i have created some blogs on hyper-v.nu about nvgre gateway.
    My recommendation:
Put the gateway Hyper-V host and GW VM's in a separate domain.
Connect the GW VM's directly to internet.
Enable the Windows Firewall. look after the Network Connection Profile as there are different rule sets for Private, Public and Domain rules. Make sure the external interface is marked as public profile. If you use the toolkit i created for GW deployment
    its configured for you.
if your company policy doesn't allow to directly connect to the internet put firewall in front, but transparently, or create a public subnet behind that firewall so your GW VM's have public ip's.
Only use inspection on traffic (IDS), don't block it, if you really need to, create a common allow list for regular ports. Otherwise tenants need to open service requests at your helpdesk to open ports if they want to publish application via a NAT
    rule.
since you put the hosts and GW VM's in a separate domain you managed to separate it from your management domain, what is in my sense the best practice.
Use 3th party NVGRE vendors like Boudewijn mentioned as BIG IP F5.

  • NVGRE Gateway stops forwarding packets

I've deployed NVGRE Gateway and added a virtual network using NAT and it works fine..
...about 15 minutes then everything stops. I have ping running to external IP address and it works fine when adding a NAT connection to the virtual network, but suddenly stops after approx 15minutes. No events can be found from the guest VM, from the GW
VM, from the gateway host or from the SCVMM.
Everything come back to normal when removing the NAT connection and re-adding it.
I have installed the hotfix 2918813 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2918813) on the GatewayVM but it doesn't change anything.
    Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

If you have several default gateways configured on your virtualization gateways, it is important to configure metrics and eventually static routes.
Just check this blog post to see if it is relevant: http://kristiannese.blogspot.no/2014/02/configuring-metrics-and-static-routes.html

Hi,  from PowerShell you should be able to add gateway to VM Network with the following command:
    Add-SCVMNetworkGateway -Name <String> -VMNetwork <VMNetwork>
    [-EnableBGP <Boolean> ]

  • Probably Gateway configuration problem

    Hi Friends
As an overview I will tell you the following.  We have installed a landscape with some Solutions of SAP Netweaver 7.0, among others, SAP ERP 6.0 SR3 on AIX 6.1 OS plataform and Oracle 10.2.0.4 database. The development layer DEV was installed sucessfully in cetralized environment.
In the QAS layer we´ve installed the same solution within the same DB and OS components, but in an distributed environment. As we have readed the installation guide, we mounted /sapmnt/, but  the RFC conection was unsuccesfully executed.
Aditional to this, we tried to configure the mail service via the transaction SCOT, I have configured this in the development systems and also I can view BRTOOLS dba logs detail. In case of SCOT in the QAS systems when I try to process mails to send, a message appears that says "NO SENT MESSAGES" or something like this. That doesn´t happens in DEV systems.
Do you have an idea about these possible related problems. I´ve thought that maybe in distributed installations some pos-instalations activies need to be applied in order to gateway service.
    I appreciate your help.
Sorry for the lage message, but I have some time dedicated to this problem
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I think that you need to install a SAP stand alone gateway on the DB host.
That is what I had to do on a MSCS cluster where the DB is on one node and SAP CI on the other node.

  • Leopard - QMaster and Virtual Cluster problem

    Hi guys,
Up until yesterday I had my MacPro Octo running under 10.4 where I did succesfully set up a Virtual Cluster using 4 instances for Compressor. It worked as a charm and my MacPro was doing it's job perfectly.
Today, I made a bootable backup of my 10.4 install and installed 10.5 using the erase and install options ( clean install ). I installed all my software again and tryed setting up my Virtual Cluster again, using the same settings I had under 10.4. Sadly I can't seem to get it working.
In the QMaster Preferences pane, I have the QuickCluster with Services option checked. For the compressor entry in the Services I have the Share Option checked and used 4 isntances for the selected service. The Quickcluster received a descent name and the option to include unmanaged services from other computers is checked.
I have the default options set in the Advanced tab, ( nothing checked except log service activity to log file and Show QMaster service status in the Menu Bar). I then started the Cluster using the Start Sharing button.
Now I open u Compressor and add a file to process ( QT encode to iPod ), but when I hit the Submit button, my Virtual Cluster doesn't show up in the Cluster Dropdown. If I now leave the Compressor GUI open for 5 minutes, it will eventually show up in the list, and I can pick it. Sadly, picking it from the list at this point and hitting the Submit button makes Compressor Hang.
I checked my logs, but the only thing concerning Compressor I could find is this :
    4/12/07 20:12:35 Compressor[242] Could not find image named 'MPEG1-Output'.

Batch Monitor immediately detects the cluster being active again, but Compressor doesnt, leaving me only This Computer available in the Cluster drop down when submitting a batch.
In my Activity Monitor, I notice that CompressorTranscoder is not responing ( the 4 CompressorTranscoderX processes are fine ) and the ContentAgent proces isn't responding neither.
Does anyone have any clue on what I could check next or how I could fix my problems ?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Stefaan

Bah, this is crazy, today it doesn't work anymore. Yesterday my cluster was showing up in the Dropdown window, and I could submit a batch to it, and it got processed over my virtual cluster.
Today, after finishing the second part of my movie, I tried it again. I didn't change anything to my settings, my machine hasn't even rebooted (just recovered from sleep mode) and my cluster isn't showing up at all anymore. Even the Qmaster menu doesn't show it
Guess, I'll have to wait out until it appears again, or try a few things out

  • Quantum Gateway Router Problems

    Hello.
After installing my new quantum gateway router, I have had nothign but problems.  The router will connect to the laptops and phones very reliably, but it never has a stable connection with either a ROKU 3 or Amazon Fire STick int he same room.  I can watch the connection connect and disconnect over and over.
Range is not a problem, ans sometimes the connection will hold so long as the device is in use.  But, if I come back the next morning it is anybody's guess whether my streaming devices will connect.
I have read many problems and complaints regarding this issue with this router.  Any suggestions?

im having the same problems man. I Cant even connect any device wirelessly to the new quantum router. I always get dns isnt resolving xbox server names for the x1. Plz someone tell us how to fix this.i tried basically EVERYTHING. port forwaring, static ip, changing the compatibility mode and everything but still no change. Is the router preset with a setting that restricts online connectivity? but it works only when its wired. Someone please help

  • Fios quantum gateway router problem

Hello, when I connect my coaxial cable and power adaptor to my old verizon mi424wr router, the internet works fine. But when I connect my coxial cable and the power adapter that came with the fios quantum gateway router, the internet doesn't work. On the router, the internet icon keeps blinking white for about a minute, then it just becomes a solid non-blinking red internet icon. Assisstance would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Your problem may be that you didn't release your WAN IP address before switching routers.  It's necessary to do so.
To release your IP address you could power off the new router, wait 2 hours, or overnight if that's more convenient, and then power the router back on.
Or to release the IP address more quickly, with the Actionec in place, follow the steps in this link:
    http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/How-am-I-able-to-change-my-ip-address/m-p/703336#M47733
After releasing your WAN IP, wait about 10 minutes and then fire up the Quantum router.  You should have a new WAN IP address and be connected back to the Internet.

  • August Patch Cluster Problems

Has anyone had the following issue after installing the latest Patch Cluster?
    After a reboot I get
    couldn't set locale correctly
To correct this I have to edit /etc/default/init
    and remove
    LC_COLLATE=en_GB.ISO8859-1
    LC_CTYPE=en_GB.ISO8859-1
    LC_MESSAGES=C
    LC_MONETARY=en_GB.ISO8859-1
    LC_NUMERIC=en_GB.ISO8859-1
    LC_TIME=en_GB.ISO8859-1
If I then create a flash archive and use this flash archive the jumpstart process then puts the locale info back and the problem appears again.
It's not critical as I don't need to be on the latest Patch Cluster but would wondered if I'm the only one having issues?

If you open the directory in CDE's file manager, right click on the zipped file and select unzip. The cluster will be unzipped to a directory structure called x86_recommended or something of the sort. Change to that directory to run the patch cluster install script. The patch script is looking for that directory structure.

  • Help debugging standard Gateway configuration problem

I've got a Mac Pro running Lion Server.
It connects to a fixed IP / direct connection to the Internet on Ethernet 1.
The machine, and the services it supports all have good access to the Internet.
It is configured to support a LAN from Ethernet 2.  Wifi connection is disabled.
I used the Gateway Assistant to set up, and:
Ethernet 2 is configured at 192.168.2.1, with DNS set manually to OpenDNS values.  These are the same values as used on Ethernet 1's fixed IP connection (which works fine).
NAT is set to IP Forwarding and Network Address Translation, External Interface is Ethernet 1, and Port Mapping Protocol is enabled.
DHCP is set to distribute values to en1 (which is Ethernet 2) in range 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.127.  DNS is set to 192.168.2.1.
The problem I have is, is that although client connections to Ethernet 2 set up pefectly, the connected machines have no connection to the internet: unable to see fqdns or ping IPs directly.
I must be doing something wrong... but can't see it.  Hopefully someone else can...
