NVidia 6800GT & PCI Slots - Keeping Things Cool & Copacetic
Hi Gang
Fully aware of heating issues, especially with Pre-Dual Core G5's and poorly cooled ATI Video Cards, I'm trying the following arrangment with my G5 2.0 Dual Core;
Need to take advantage of all PCI slots, but using NVidia 6800 GT, (with decent cooling), I put a FirmTek eSATA card in the middle 8X PCI slot, and Sonnet FW800 Cards above and below the FirmTek eSata card.
Took temperature reading of nVidia at start-up; 118 Degrees Fahrenheit. After about an hour, it went up to 129 Degrees Fahrenheit. Warm but not Hot to the touch. I'm optimistic ...
Why no 'internal' SATA Card approach? Because I don't like the drive rack arrangment which clearly obstructs the cooling fans. Got some great advice here from BD, and japamac. I think this was the way to go
Thanks for looking;

Hi-
Sounds like you are happy with your results?
Temps aren't bad at all, and now you have tons of external connections!
BTW, Nvidia used a Coolermaster heatsink/fan for the graphics card.
Nice to have a cooling specialist on the job.

Upgrading Mac Pro (2009) from to NVIDIA Quadro 4000, what PCI slot to use ?
I am upgrading my Mac Pro (2009) from the Nvidia GT120 (stock) to the Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac. The GT120 was installed in the PCI Slot #1 and I would like to install the Nvidia Quadro 4000 in the PCI Slot #2, that way the Fan in the Graphics Card (Quadro 4000) will have better air circulation, is there any limitation or recommendation regarding the PCI slot to use ?, thanks a lot
I have an early Mac Pro 3,1.
The user manual I downloaded states:
Slot 1 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
Slot 2 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
So I'm assuming that means both slots 1 and 2 are the same and it doesn't matter which of my two graphics cards go in which slots?
Also, my second graphics card is a Quadro 4000 which is for Adobe Applications that use the CUDA engine. I don't have any monitors hooked up to it. -
Permissable to install PCI slot fan + another fan?
Hello,
I decided to do something to help get some of the heat out of my G5 Quad. I took from my G4 MDD the PCI slot fan which fits perfectly in the groove next to the PCIe slot. Also, decided to install a smaller fan in the middle of the computer chassis, next to the GPU. Is it normal for the G5 Quad's GPU card to get hot or warm? I felt the heatsink and it was kind of hot. I have no problems with my computer, just wanted to know if its permissable to put some fans inside the G5 to help get hot air out of the system. I know there is an air deflector shield, but is it any harm to put a small fan sitting upright facing towards the back to get hot air out of the machine, and a PCI fan card as well?
Awaiting responses.Japamac,
For someone who doesn't own a G5, you sure do know a lot about them So, you are advising me NOT to put in a PCI Slot fan and or take the smaller fan from my MDD and put it in the middle of the case for it to cool the video card? I was just concerned because I saw the GPU temp was over 160 degrees and the heatsink, though massive on the 6600 nvidia was kind of hot to touch. I would have thought by putting in a PCI Slot fan it would help to cool the GPU down. It does in fact cool it down tremendously.
Perhaps, I will remove the other smaller fan. What is the purpose of the air deflector shield? I never had one of those in my MDD before and its a first on the G5. I am aware that PCI isn't compatible with PCIe. The PCI Slot fan doesn't fit INTO the slot, but rather just connects to the bottom of the slot. I know. G5's are not forgiving. Just the slightest miscalculation and problems can occur.
Is 160 degrees F exceeding the GPU temperature? Bear in mind, its the heatsink that got hot, not the outer perimeter of the card. Right now, my temps are as follows, even with the fans I have in place:
Hard drive: 115F
CPU A core 1: 122F
CPU A core 2: 124F
CPU B core 1: 124F
CPU B core 2: 126F
Backside: 117F
Drive bay(empty one?): 92F
GPU(video card): 128F
Also, I asked you another question in another thread. What internal SATA card can you recommend for me which supports booting to the OS? I just ordered a 500GB SATA-II drive and would like to access the 3.0GB/SEC speed with a nice SATA-II card that supports booting. I have yet to find one in PCIe. I take it there probably doesn't exist one. -
Dm4 mini-PCIe slot -- SSD or Bluetooth?
I purchased a Pavilion dm4 1173cl from Costco in November. I would like to add a small SSD to the mini-PCIe slot (designated for use by WWAN module in service manual) to use for source-code and SQL Server databases (both presenting a usage patterns of high random-IO, which benefit from SSD).
I would be keeping the original 500GB 7K drive as boot/os and general app installation, only placing items that would benefit my development experience on the SSD. In other words Boot-time and application launch performance are fine from the spinning drive, I just want to speed up a few specific (high random-IO) things by using an SSD.
in particular, I'm looking at the 80GB Intel mini-PCIe SSD (available at NewEgg by searching for SSDMAEMC080G2C1).
Also curious if I could put a bluetooth module in that same slot (obviously not at the same time as the SSD)? I'm currently using an external bluetooth dongle, but would rather it were internal if I can't use that space for an SSD.
Any info appreciated.Ok, finally found some more info about this. Turns out mini-PCIe slots are anything but standard. Instead, mini-PCIe is a reference to a physical slot configuration, but manufacturers are taking great liberties with which of the pins they actually wire-up. mSATA (which the above-linked Intel SSD utilizes) is one such customization of the mini-PCIe slot, others being USB, PATA (parallel ATA/IDE hard-drive), and who knows how many others... all overloading the use of the 8+18 mini-PCIe connector.
Since this slot is desgnated for use with WWAN adapter, I'm doubtful it's configured as mSATA to enable use of an SSD... Which presents another interesting issue... since the dm4 1173cl model didn't come with the WWAN module, they didn't even bother soldering in the slot (just as they don't include the SIM card reader nor WWAN antennae in the screen housing). There are solder contacts on the board, but no card connector. I should have cracked the case open before spending time researching this, rather than relying on pictures from the service manual which covers models that do include the WWAN module. -
Hi,
I just got some new parts for my system which include the Gigabyte SLI motherboard and MSI 6800GT PCIe card. Installing Windows was a pain, I think there may be something wrong with my memory as I would get BSODs during the install until I switched it to single channel mode.
Once I got it installed, I installed the nForce 4 drivers, followed by the newest nvidia whql forcewares. My system is still a little unstable but for the most part, it's ok in Windows. That is, until I try to do any sort of configuring or running of 3D apps. For example, when I try and select the 6800GT tab in advanced display properties, it just hangs. When I tell Windows to kill the process, it still stays there forever. Exact same thing when I try and load 3d mark 05 or SiSoft Sandra. I tried loading two games and they both crashed before they even got to the menu.
I'm going to try re-installing Windows, but I don't know if that's going to help. I'm really worried my video card is screwed. It's gonna be hard to narrow down this problem because none of my old components are compatible with the new system.
Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be or what I should try?
Thanks,
AdrianNo, only ran memtest on the old machine (with the same RAM). I could run it on the new machine.
Even if there is a problem with the RAM, I'm thinking something else it at fault. Either Windows is corrupted somehow or the video card has a fault. At this point, I'm doubting that it's anything else.
CPU temps are at about 28 at idle. This problem doesn't happen when I'm running a 3D app, I get app hangs and crashes on initialization, which to me sounds like the video card is issued a drawing operation and it fails. It's not a driver issue either, I tried 3 different forceware drivers all with the exact same results. -
I just installed an ATI 9600 pro 256mb video card. Since then things have run a tiny bit slower on the machine. A window that used to open instantly now has the beach ball for maybe3 seconds before opening. This happened in Freehand when creating a new, blank document. In fact this took nearly 20 seconds to open. I've run repair permissions, onyx, mac janitor and even purchased a copy of drive genius. It's still not as nippy as I'd hoped.
The hard drive I have in is a Maxtor 6Y080L0, 76.33 GB. I have 1.25gb RAM.
The machines been on for around 40 minutes now and it's reading 28 degrees C at the mo.
Could the new graphics card be getting a little warm and would one of the PCI slot fans I've read about help? Also if a PCI fan would help do I need a specific model or would I be able to pick up one from the local PC dealer.
Many thanks in advance for help offered.28C is 82F, hardly much above room temperature. Why are you concerned that it's too hot? What temp are you actually measuring? The CPU temp sensor? If that be the case then it's running cool. Although you've repaired permissions (which won't speed up anything), but have you repaired the hard drive? PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.
Now that I've tried it out, I'm starting to think the contributors to that site were windows users who didn't read the topic. Starting up docked gave the following lspci output (notice there's no radeon card):

So a few parts of the dock are getting detected but not the most important parts. The error that I think is related to the absence of the graphics card appears in dmesg. Look for the part about "cannot allocate resource region":

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. Here is a docked dmesg from 2.6.27:

The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
SSD in Mini-PCIe slot on mid-2009 MacBook Pro
Hi all
I've just bought a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (the one with a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo and 9400M and 9600M GT).
I want to add an SD to the current mechanical storage to install OS X and programs on. I don't want an Optibay as I would rather keep the optical drive so I am now looking at the Mini PCI-Express SSD drives. Currently the Airport card is in that slot, and I can replace that with a small USB Wi-Fi dongle.
My question is does the slot run at full speed (i.e. 1x or 2x, as I hear some run at USB 2.0 speeds only), and is it fully-functional or has Apple limited it to the Airport cards only, as Toshiba do with some of their laptops?I'm not talking about the ExpressCard slot, I'm talking about the Mini PCI Express slot. I haven't opened the mid-2009 model yet but I presume it has a Mini PCIe slot with a Mini PCIe Airport card in with the aerials surrounding the display, like 99% of laptops and the other MacBooks?

Satellite A500-1GH What is a empty PCI slot with JGPS sign
Almost a year ago I bought a Toshiba Satellite A500-1GH.
I cannot say that I am not satisfied with the computer or the company.
The problems that I had was the Display problem (stop working for seconds) which was software problem (updated nVidia 8.16.11.8875) and with the HDD which stop working but company changed with a new one.
Now I wanted to upgrade the second memory module from 2GB to 4GB so I can have 2x4GB, but when I opened the memory compartment, I saw next to them an empty PCI slot with the sign JGPS.
Does anybody know what that is?
And if yes what is the part number?
Thank you in advance.Hi mate
As far as I know JGPS is an GPS connector.
Possibly this connector would be shared by 3G miniPCI card.
As far as I know this Satellite A500-1GH has not been equipped with an 3G module and therefore the miniPCI slot is empty.
> And if yes what is the part number?
I don't know the part number but all parts can be ordered from local Toshiba ASP -
We recently purchased a Mac Mini to use as a dedicated computer for a microscope. It'll be connect to the camera and to the internet. We're replacing an old G3. And we're planning on simply using the mouse/keyboard/monitor that was existing in the lab.
When the Mini arrived, my excitement turned to disappointment when I realized the camera uses a PCI cable (the cable is labeled E89980-A). So I searched for adapters that would work to plug in the PCI cable into a USB or firewire slot. I found adapters that would work, but they are all advertised to be used for printers, not for cameras. Example.
I contacted the manufacturer, Diagnostic Instruments, and they told me that it is a proprietary PCI card and must be installed in the new computer.
Is there no other option? Would an adapter to USB card work? Do I need to buy a Mac with an slot for expansion?
I'm pretty embarrassed if that's the case because I am the one who did all the decision-making and convinced the boss to get a new computer.Hello,
The cable you linked to on the Computer Geeks site is a USB to Parallel cable. That cable is going to be useful only for devices that are designed to plug into a parallel printer port.
The device you are trying to use comes with it's own PCI expansion card. The fact that it's connector may look like a printer port's connector is irrelevant.
If it requires that PCI expansion card to function, then you will have no choice but to buy a machine with a PCI expansion slot.
A parallel port / USB to Parallel cable will not provide you with the same function that the PCI controller they supply does.
And, there are no USB or FireWire to PCI expansion slot adapters available that I know of. The two designs are so dissimilar that it really isn't a practical product.
It would be technically possible. But, it would basically amount to an external case with slots and it's own controller. Then, a cable to connect it to the Mac. And, drivers to communicate with that external box that holds the card.
I am not aware of any such device that exists to run PCI slots off the USB or FireWire ports. But, if one did exist, it would likely be way out of your reasonable budget.
Additional expansion slot cabinets have been available for PC's for years. They function similar to how I described above. Except, that they plug directly into an existing ISA, PCI, etc. port inside the host computer. And, generally, they have sold in the $1000 to $5000 price range depending on the year and manufacturer.
Unfortunately, the new Macs are not shipping with standard PCI slots. The Mac Pro is the only model with Expansion Slots. And, they have newer PCI standards (PCI Express) that are evolutions of the PCI interface. But, you cannot simply plug a standard PCI card into them.
So, if this device is particularly important, I see your most viable options being:
1) Keep using the older machines for that task
2) Buy a newer Microscope that will interface with the FireWire ports.
I hope this helps.

Which type of PCI slots do I have?
I want to upgrade my graphics card for gaming. I want to install a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT which is a PCI Express 2.0 interface. Can I put this in my MacPro? What are my options for better cards? From what I understand, which may be wrong, is I have 4 PCIe ports and 1 PCIe2 port? I can't seem to find anything in the System Profiler that says definitively.
The card I have says this under the Graphics/Displays section:
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
Type: Display
*Bus: PCIe*
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
But then under PCI Cards it says:
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT:
Name: NVDA,Display-B
Type: display
*Bus: PCI*
Slot: Slot-1
Vendor ID: 0x10de
So I am confused because I cannot tell if the NVIDIA card is PCI or PCIe. Do I have four regular PCI slots and one PCIe slot or four PCIe slots and one PCIe2 slot? What options do I have for video cards that are 512MB or larger? I have some games that I would love to turn on all of the effects to the highest quality, Quake 4 being one of them. Thanks in advance!!Ooops, my bad, so there are only two different options? And they are both 512MB? I don't really see anything that says 512MB of VRAM or anything for the Radeon. ATI is now owned by AMD. It seems they may just discontinue Mac support. I don't want be stuck with another unsupported card. Last time was with the VooDoo 64MB card that came out for Mac when I had a G3. 3DFX went out of business shortly after.
Quadro 4500 FX and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT? Both are 512MB, is one brand better than the other? Is there anything bigger? I have recently read a lot of reviews of the Radeon cards over heating. I would like to get something better if possible and prepare to not have to upgrade again so soon. Also nVidia has these other Quadros on this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/page/qfx_uhe.html
Are none of the others in this list compatible? They are all PCIe. Is it just because there are no drivers? -
MAC Pro first generation PCIe Slots 1 and 2: are the y equal?
I have an X1900 XT card and I wanna replace the stock GPU cooler with an off-market one which needs some space below the card as well as above it.
I am a bit confused on the informatin I get around about the PCIe slots on Mac Pro (Dual dual cores 3.0GHz). I read both slots one and two support X16 lane where at another place, I read slot two can only supports upto X8. So I am wondering which is the case? Does slot two provides the very same x16 performance as slot one for this video card?
Thanks.Your first gen Mac Pro has slots in this default config:
slot 4 (top) = 8 lane
slot 3 = 1 lane
slot 2 = 1 lane
slot 1 = 16 lane
You can change the lane speeds to some extent using the Expansion Slot Utility but only slot 1 runs as 16 lane.
We tested the X1900 XT in 16 lane, 8 lane and 4 lane slots. There's a slight slowdown in an 8 lane slot. A 4 lane or 1 lane slot will cause a significant slowdown. Slot 1 is the best place to put your graphics card if you want maximum speed. -
DIMM1 now read as PCI Slot?
Hey guys, Happy Holidays!
My Board/System is actually running great right now, so this is more of an observation/warning than urgent cry for help. I recently changed from Corsair TWINX 3700 (434) DDR SDRAM to Corsair XMS 3500C2 (417) DDR SDRAM. The resukt was a terrific increase in performance, stability, and especially OC (210@1:1 to 223@1:1 PAT Turbo). However I was flying so high cuz of the big OC that I got greedt and tried to boot with 220FSB and use Clock Generator to get more. It worked! Until I hit 227FSB where I had a hard crash. This probably is wehat killed my Promise RAID ), and also made DIMM1 no longer readable as full! In fact it reads in Sandra, AIDA32, SMBIOS viewers, Windows info etc. as a PCI Slot. I moved my RAM to DIMMs 2&4 and all is good (I hope). Any thoughts, comments, jokes at my expense ? It may just be the SMBIOS being the way it sometimes is but, food for thought...Actually, all of my various utilities, including the Tool House USA diagnostic suite, seem to have reestablished accurate reads of the MOBO. SANDRA 2004 however, still claims that I have DIMM4 occupied w/ 512 DIMM3 empty DIMM2 occupied w/ 512 and PCI Slot empty.
Could I have actually screwed up so badly that I shifted signals or current signatures (these are just terms I am using in an attempt to sound competent). :hypecrite: I gotta tell you man, at this point even if the bloody thing is planning on blowing u and taking me with it, I still do not want to give up on it! I shudder to think of the possibility of starting over w/ another board. And even though I am quite fond enough of my fast little "Neo", I do not think I could justify replacing it with a second. There just seem to be MOBOS which are better buys considering we are now in possession of all the facts we did not have access to 6 months ago. By the way, my system is absolutely flyin, and far from displaying any signs of instability, it has actually stopped the little problems it had untill the Promise RAID went kaput!. My UPS no longer gives config errors in the Event Viewer. My games, 321 X-Copy, IE6, and backup programs are just ripping along like never before. One other note (I thought I had stated this earlier, sorry) I had Norton Ghost 2003 installed for use w/ an IDE Drive which I would fill with important data, backups etc.. In other words, even though the Symantec people told me it was safe, I was just too suspicious of the imaging process with a striped array. I did use it once a while back (on the Intel ICH5R RAID, never Promise) before I had gained anything even remotely related to a clue but everything worked fine, and I have since even established the DVD-RW image integrity.
Sorry dude, I cannot seem to make my posts concise. I hope you understand that I am not yet totally comfortable with either the subject matter, nor the medium Which is why this post is somewhat redundant in light of your last post. Thanks for your time, and the positive news.

Try new pci slot --- crash wind
I was having issues with the driver installer not detecting my SB2 Platinum in windows XP. I tried moving the card to a new slot and now when I boot windows it only works for about 90 seconds before I get a hard crash, as if I had pressed the reset button, every time I boot. The card works fine in ubuntu linux. Something is going on in windows after moving the card to a new PCI slot, as reccomended to remedy the driver installer issue.
I have tried both the CD installer and the downloaded drivers and there is no way to get either to work. The card worked for years in this computer and now it won't play nice with windows after a fresh install.

NEO-FIS2R PCI Slot IRQ Information
I've got a NEO-F1S2R on the way and am trying to figure out where I should place my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and Hauppauge PVR250 for optimum performance. In the past I found that I had to place my soundcard on PCI slot with its own IRQ, same with the PVR250, to get the best results (if not I found I got pops and crackles during audio playback).
Can anyone tell me how IRQs are assigned to each of the PCI slots? Which slot is shared with the AGP slot. Which slot(s) are shared with the RAID controller? I've searched high and low but can't find this information.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Mikeyou definatly want your own irq for the m-audio/midiman card, in my case i have my hammerfall card running in slot 3 (2 away from agp) and my uad card in slot 4 and both have there own irq without having to assign in bios, this might not be your issue though as maudio cards are very shoot and miss, althought it might cost 2-3 times as much as your soundblaster card, it is on the entry level tier of pro audio cards, having this said and done, they do sound great if they get working properly,
if you continue having problems after you solve your irq issues hit me a pm, as i am very experienced with recording systems of most platform, first thing i can tell you is if your using cubase sx or nuendo, make sure you select asio drivers for your midiman card, apologies if youve already been this far, but that is the most overlooked part of a vst system, (if asio is a selection in your app be it sonar or acid ect pick asio over andy dx or mme drivers as they are the most low latency and high performing for windows pro audio solutions) other than that check your buffer setting from your apps, 1024 buffers is most recomended and will give you about 23 milliseconds of latency, smaller buffers will will reduce your latency but will require more juice from your system ect, again aplogies if you already know this,
