NWDI Questions

Hello All:
I am very new to NWDI and WEB AS concepts and need help regading NWDI. We are running NW04S portal on Sun box. I have some questions regarding NWDI landscape. Please help me on this so that we can go forward on setting up NWDI.
- Can we run NWDI on Windows while Portal is running UNIX?
- We have 1 developer who is going to work on ESS & MSS Customization. So do we need a consolidation environment in our landscape?
Based on my understanding we just need to import all the SCA files into the track and start customizing using NWDS. Once everything is done we need to build the SCA files based on customized components and transfer across the landscape.
Is my above assumption correct?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Surekha.

Hi there,
NWDI is a recent tool for everybody. About the interoperability between EP and NWDI it doesn' matter what is the operational system, because the NWDI will communicate with the WAS where is the Portal is installed and the requiriment is the connectivity between this instances. Doesn't matter Service package level, which version and system operational. The consolidation environment is recomended but isn't a requeriment. For instance, you can use the DEV environment as consolidation.
Your assumption is correct, but I prefer say the same with other words
Take a look on the ESS cookbook customization ann then I guess everything will be more clear.
Type a quickly search on the foruns by "ESS cookbook".
I hope it help you!

Luciano

  • Activation - Error:Cannot store binary and a few other NWDI questions.

    Hi all!
I'm working on the Internet Sales Application (crm/b2b) in CRM 6.0. The work i do is an upgrade from CRM 4 to CRM 6, so I'm new to NWDI.
I'm following the "ISA50DevExtGuideConcepts21.pdf" (since I haven't found a document for version 6), and have managed to add java extensions and librares successfully. I now work on the web-project and have started an activity to merge changes to stylesheets, and also added own mimes like stylesheets and images (.jpg, .gif). The files where added to the project folder (webContent in crm/isa/web/b2b) and then located and added to DTR through a refresh in NWDS. When I try to activate this activity I get the post-proccesing error in the request log below. This might have been caused by an image file renamed to .bak, although its recoginzed as an image in NWDS.
    Questions:
    1. Any idea what goes wrong? How should I solve this?
    2. Can I check out or remove the activity to correct the problem? How?
    3. I have a few Activities, already activated on the development server that I would like to get rid of. How do I do that?
    4. I have a few Activities that aren't properly named. Is it possible to change the name after activation?

When i removed one of the 79 files and added another file, one of those not possible to add before, it was successful.
After this I tried to remove all 79 files again i one activity, and the add the original 79 files in another. The remove was successful while the adding was unsuccessful. All with the same error message in Request log.
Does anybody have an idea of what is happening here? I don't have a clue.

  • NWDI Question

    Hey All,
I'm building a NW 7.4 PO landscape with NWDI integration.
    A few clarifications around it.
During the install of PO, is asks to check box a intergration into NWDI landscape.
Do I need to have the NWDI infrastructure built first?
If not, Do I need to check mark this because I will have one?
if i don't check it, can i make or turn on the changes later? or is it only done at installation?
Last question, Can NWDI exist on the same server as SAP PO? If so, would you put it on DEV? I guess it also depends on SLD configurations?

    Hi Joshua,
use this option on the runtime system where you intend to deploy your product (this is typically used for products like ESS which is delievered by SAP but also modifiable by customers. If you don't tell the system this product is modified by you (controlled by NWDI) then you might "overwrite" it by accident when your admin colleagues are deploying latest pathes or upgrading the SP stack. To avoid that you tell the upgrade tool that this product is under modification by you, so the upgrade tool won't touch it but skip it during deployment).
Notice, you can enable this feature later as well, read more on this here:
Configuring Runtime Systems in NWDI - Using the Development and Production Infrastructure - SAP Library --> see Maintaining an NWDI-Controlled System Landscape
Regarding the checkbox itself "Prepare SAP System for NWDI Integration" indeed it only does what Jun said.
Regarding your other question, NWDI musn't be on any system which is a runtime system (dev, cons, test, prod). I recommend to have a separate engine installed that runs NWDI.
For more information on this see the note
    "754143 -- CMS remarks/restrictions" which says:
Do not use CMS server as a runtime system:
Do not use the J2EE Engine, on which the CMS is running, as a runtime system. When you import software components that have offline deployment portions, deployment causes a deadlock. In other words, the CMS is shut down by the import that it is supposed to check.

  • Some nwdi questions...

    Hi guys,
I'm new to NWDI and I have the followin questions
    a. We have SAP BI, XI and Portal and will most likely be customizing and developing some Java applications. Can a single NWDI infrastruture manage all the 3 SAP product, or must 3 NWDIs be setup ?
    b. We are also planning to use CTS+, for Portal as there is no ABAP stack, which system can we link it to the STMS, can just any ABAP systems based on NW7.0 be used ?
thanks.....hope you guys can clear my doubts...

    Hi Thom,
    1) A single NWDI instance can be used to mantain the source for SAP BI, PI and portal. You can create different Software components and tracks as per your requirement. But, before you implement the NWDI have a look at the SAP Note 737368 (Hardware requirements of Java Development Infrastructure). This will help you size the server.
Refer to the following link for a better understanding of NWDI:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/001a1ed5-0c01-0010-a781-9a0115504d5f
    2) As suggested generally it is prefered to be a dual stack system (like the solution manager). A point to highlight is that CMS already existed in Java stack for transportation so why CTS+. Ideally there should be a single system transporting objects in a landscape. Rather, than having multiple systems. Hence, it would be prefered if all the transportation can be done and monitored from one system.

  • NWDI Question....read

    Hello Gurus,
I have a dilemma. I need to change a webdynpro aplication who resides in  NWDI, specifically I need to re-import the model because a standard FM changes its parameter type with a ECC upgrade. Now i also need to keep the support of my WD in production system (ERP and PORTALS). The thing is, now with the upgrade tests, i need to change my model in order to the app will works correctly with the ECC's Upgrade, but also i need to keep the old version model (app active version ) for the support in PRD System who it has not been upgraded yet...so the changes in the std FM is not there yet. The big question is: Is NWDI support this, without overlap changes in both versions? Can i deploy the new and old model version on DEV System and it will not overwrite the changes? If i have to fix something on PRD System, the old model version can follow the track separately from the new model version?. I'm reading some documentation from Help SAP, but it still does not respond to my issue...please help!!! I want to understand...
    Thanx in advance

    Hello Greg / ALL GURUS,
If an activity...can be seen as a transport order in ERP....and i have one WD app with two developer X Y...both developer check-in activities (with different changes...one re-import the model and the other one not) on the same version of the code...and developer X after test his changes...release/check-out/publish his activity...but Y not... ..the active version will be the one with the old model...does'nt it? the X version application.... or am i BS-ing too much???....can i manage this issue with NWDI like this scenario???

  • NWDI Configuration: CMS

    hi,
We are trying to configure NWDI and in this process, we had completed all the steps for NWDI installation and configuration and also the CMS configuration, Product & SC Definition in SLD now during the creation of Tracks using CMS, we are not able to see the Software component created in the SLD.
Any idea how to solve this.
    Thanks and regards,
    Kris

    Kris,
Couple of things, which might help:
    1. Go to CMS/Landscape Configurator/Domain Data
Make sure SLD URL field has correct data and press "Update CMS" button.
CMS will sync component data from SLD. If it fails, check log files for explanation. If success, you will see new components from SLD.
    2. NWDI questions are better answered if posted to NWDI forum
    SAP NetWeaver Development Infrastructure (NWDI)
There are good NWDI experts monitoring the forum.

  • Deploying webdynpro application

    Hi everybody,
Can anyone let me know in how many ways can we deploy a webdynpro application and what are they.
    Regards
    raysubrat

    9Hi,
As per i know there are two ways to deploy the WD applications.
    1.Direct deployement
    2.deployment through NWDI transport
1.Direct deployment:In the NWDS <- windows -: preferences -: j2ee Engine -: give the server name and message port
(For message port,go to server:http://<host<:<port no</index.html - system info - check message port.
2.NWDI -; CMS -; In the runtime system you need to metion the dev server names for whch you need to deploy
For the DC chekc out the code and   check -in it will automatically deploy under that dev server.
(for check in and check out follow the below thred)

  • Questions on NWDI server management.

    Hi
We implemented NWDI on the same server as that of the portal.
(8GB RAM, 2.61 GHz AMD Opteron proc 285, Win 2003 OS)
A lot of space in <b><drive>:/usr</b> is being utilised whenever I run the import in NWDI, so from time to time I will have to delete the log files to create space.
is there any place <b>where I can default these log files to fall on a different drive location?</b>
Also I learnt that CBS utilises lot of drive space during its operation and when I check the CBS service in Visual Admin
<b>rootFolder is pointed to ./tem/CBS --> where is this located? I am unable to locate this?</b>
    According to  http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/53/75b3407e73c57fe10000000a1550b0/content.htm
The CBS can also point to C:/temp/CBS
I have enough space in C: drive <b>so can I point the rootFolder to  C:/temp/CBS, will this affect the development process that is going on now?
Can this arrangement help improve the performance?</b>
    Please advice
    Thanks
    Regards

    Hi there,
Yes it is possible to create distributed applications for Lync server
Regarding the services technically all the Lync services should be monitored since each of them is responsible of a certain workload. but the main service is the lync front end service that once it is stopped it will affect client sign-in.
regarding monitoring the network it depends on what is the traffic that you want to monitor

  • Basic questions about NWDI structure

    Hello All,
I have read some materials about the Java development process within SAP J2EE engine.
Here I just want to confirm with you some knowledge points and ask some questions about the configuration of NWDI before proceeding Java development.
    1. There are four systems within SAP Java landscape, the first one is the developer's own PC, on which there should be installed SAP Workplace (actually is a small J2EE engine and the NW developer studio), am I understanding right?
    2. Where should the DTR CBS CMS and SLD be installed? on the Consolidation Server? or the TEST Server? or the Production server? or totally on another standalone server?
    3. Within one Track (four system), how many DTR server, CBS Server and SLD server should be installed?  Does it only need one for each?(All the four system connect to the same DTR/CBS/SLD server?)
    4. Can DTR Server, CBS Server and SLD Server be installed on the same host? or should they be installed on separate hosts?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Best regards,
    Nick

The introduction of this demo contains a nice overview of the system landscape with NWDI, which should answer most of your questions:

  • NWDI Short Overvie and Questions

    Hello!
Can someone explain me the steps when you work with the SAP NWDI?
I have been surfing in the internet for 3 days and collected some information about the NWDI.
But there are still some questions, I couldn't answer myself.
    1) Can you explain me, what a "Track" is? Please give me an example for better understanding.
    2) Can you explain me the steps, when you start a new projekt in the NWDI? I don't want to know, where you have to click in the GUI of the NWDS, but I want to know, what exactly happens in the CBS, DTR, CMS and so on....
    3) What is the SLD? I found out, that there everything is administrated?
    4) What is the diferent between a track and a product?
It would be very nice, if you could answer some of my questions or give me a Link (favored in German) where I can read by myself.

    Hi,
    Steps are below :
    1. Please ask the BASIS team for below details once NWDI is installed.
    a) Message Server host and port of J2ee engine and  SLD url
Once you will get this information then open your NWDS and put the above information in following way
    a) Windows>Preferences and click on SAP J2ee Engine from left menu and select radio button "SAP J2ee Engine is installed on remote host" and put message server host and port number
    b) Windows>Preferences and expand Java Development infrastructure > Development Config and put the NWDI url .
Your developer studio is ready to work with NWDI .
Please refer this [NWDI Link|http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/JDI/NWDIRelatedNotesandLinks] and [Components Development with the NWDI|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw72/helpdata/en/49/2fe24eb7476b1fe10000000a42189d/content.htm] and

  • XSS Upgrade to EhP3 - NWDI track question

    All,
We are Upgrading XSS SP11 Ehp 1 to XSS SP14 Ehp 3.
We have upgraded our ECC system, Portal system, We have deployed the related Business Packages.
So far so fine. Then we come to the toughest part.
    Source code upgrades in NWDI
We created two tracks XSSSP14 and XSS14MOD
XSSSP14 does not have RTS as this will only be used for comparision
    XSS14MOD has runtime sysetm.
Here is my question. For XSS14MOD, ( which will 'finally' have SP11 mods + SP 14) when we create runtime system, DO WE or NOT "disable automatic deployment" in the dev system.
The question is becuase of the following thoughts of mine.
If we do not 'disable automatic deployment', then SP14MOD will overwrite all SP11+MOD with standard SP14 code when we do the initial import to development system when creating the track. Is this alright, ? Please advise.
And can anyone throw light on to their expereinces doing the manual comparisions and any better ways to track and implement changes. This is a hell lot of owork and is a project in itself

    Thanks Shikhil.
FYI ... i am following the cookbook steps
As much as have I closed the message, I would really appreciate if you can let know your experience, any pitfalls that you may have noticed during the upgrade etc
    Thanks Again

  • Question regarding the deployment of WD to NWDI

    Hello experts,
I have created a SC on a track and created a webdynpro DC under the Software component. I have done some development. After the development and local test is successful, I checkedin and activated the activity. My question is, does activation automatically deploys my DC on to the J2EE engine on the NWDI box?
    Thank you

If a server configuration is bound to the track, then activation itself will automatically deploy to the j2ee engine...

  • Question on NWDI and how to start Projects correctly..

    Hello @ All,
I´ve read and done the following Tutorial
and now I have a few questions:
1)Every time when I want to create a new SC, do I need to create a new Product too?
2)Is it possible to create one Product with 3 Web Dynpro SCs (i.e. SC_A, SC_B and SC_C), where SC_A is using SC_B and SC_C; and SC_B is using SC_C?
I thought, that its the best way to create the Product in one track.
    Thank you for any answers!!!
    Regards Mehmet.

    Hello Sidharth,
thank you for quick reply. I´ve read some topics about similar questions and many people also mention, that one should use SCs sparingly, because CBS only builds and CMS only deploys DCs that are updated.
In help.sap.com, I´ve read that SCs are helpful to group DCs with similar functionality together.
In return to my problem, the functionality of SC_A and SC_B is within one Business Object, so I can merge them into one SC. The functionality of SC_C is more common even for future developments.SC_C Is more like a framework of functionalities, in which things like value helps and so on are grouped into DCs.
So do you think, that I should reduce the amount of SCs from three to two?

  • Question on NWDI and DC for web dynpro for ESS components

    Hi
I am working on installing NWDI and mostly we will be working with ESS & MSS webdynpro customization for NW2004s.
I have a doubt, now for customizing the web dynpro components of ESS is it just enough to create the SC and track and once doing this will the developers get to the DC's of ESS?
Or initially do I have to download the editable part of the web dynpro components and deploy it in the server?
I am not sure how the web dynpro components are made available for the developers. Please help me understand.
    Thanks in advance

  • General question  regarding NWDI!

    Hi experts,
I'm using NWDI since two months as a developer and as a post-installer.
According to your experiences, I would like to know when should we have to use NWDI ? With how many developers ? In which condition do we need NWDI ?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Regards

    Hello Berthe,
You would use NWDI if you have the following conditions.
      1. You need to customize some sap delivered functions like ESS/MSS. NWDI becomes your build and transport environment in this case.
      2. The number of developers can range from 2 to n.
      3. You need to be able to have versioning and release cycles of the product you are developing
    Hope that helps
    Abdul
