OC4J Instance crashes on Linux

We have a standalone OC4J instance version 10.1.3.2 on Linux that we use to provide pdf print service for applications developed using APEX. Java version is 1.4.2. I have deployed the fop ear file to the instance, this is delivered with APEX. On several occasions, end users have reported that they can not open the pdf report. When I check the server, the OC4J instance is not running. There is nothing in the java logs or OC4J instance logs to indicate why the instance crashed. When I restart the OC4J instance, printing once again works. Has anyone else had stability problems with this product?
Thanks,
Don Morse

Standalone OC4J runs quite stable on every platform.
You should check the log files or the standard output (where you started OC4J). Also check the memory settings for the JDK. A common problem is that the JDK throws an OutOfMemoryException and won't respond anymore. You should also consider using JDK 1.5.0_x since it has a better memory management.
If this doesn't help post the complete command line.

  • OC4J instance crashing after Ping Failed: default_group~home~default_group~

    Hi All,
I have noticed from opmn logs that [pm-process] Process Crashes and System has been restarted automatically by itself.
I have read the tread with title "OC4J instance crashing - can't find any diagnostics " and I have configured the opmn.xml file in order to enable opmn.dbg logs.
In the meantime I have suspected that the BPEL crashes are the same date with default_group~home~default_group logs rotation.

Unfortunately that's a very good question.
As OPMN is in the picture here, the first step may be to enable debug logging for OPMN in the chance that it may give you more information about why it thinks the process crashed.
Generally speaking, when OPMN is restarting a process, it can be because it recognized that a managed process has dissapeared (ie JVM core dumped, etc.) or it can also be because the JVM didn't respond to any of OPMNs requests to let it know it was still alive. In which case OPMN will kill then restart the managed process. This can be caused by situations where the JVM has run out of memory, etc. and becomes unresponsive, leading to it eventually being detected as such and restarted.
What you can do is to add the OPMN PM submodule to the OPMN debug logger.
    <opmn xmlns="http://www.oracle.com/ias-instance">
    <log path="$ORACLE_HOME\opmn\logs\opmn.log" comp="internal;ons;pm" rotation-s
    ize="1500000"/>
    <debug path="$ORACLE_HOME\opmn\logs\opmn.dbg" comp="internal;pm;ons" rotation-size="1500000"/>
    </opmn>
That should then produce an opmn.dbg file in the $ORACLE_HOME/opmn/logs directory. It'll be very verbose, so you'll need to associate the restart times from the other log file to locate the relevant section of the file. Hopefully that may shed some light on what is happening, at least at the restart level.
Usually if there are runtime exceptions such as OOM errors, etc. then those are dumped to stderr/stdout. Check the contents of the other log files in the opmn/logs directory of the form default_group~home~default_group~1.log to see if there is anything obvious in there.
There has been reports of an issue with PermGen space usage -- that could be something you are running into under the covers. Try resizing the permgen space to be a little larger and see if the problem goes away -- that can be done in opmn.xml in the java > start-options section of the instance in question.
See how any of that goes!

  • How to start oc4j instance in linux

I need the oracle report server to generate reports via the call from JSP.
But the response contains no data. But i think that the problem is that the oc4j instance is not started or the port number i am using in the URL is wrong.
I have two questions in my mind.
    1) How to start the oc4j instance in linux
    2) How to find the port number of the oracle report server. will it be stored in any files.
Pls provide some inputs on this query.

    Hello,
    1) How to start the oc4j instance in linuxYou have not specified what version, so for standalone you can use the following command:
    java -jar oc4j.jar
In 10.1.3 you need to use the oc4j.cmd/oc4j.sh file to start and stop OC4J.
If you are using the Application Server, then please use opmnctl start and stop the OC4J instance.
    2) How to find the port number of the oracle report server. will it be stored in any files.
Please post this to the Reports forum.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error while installing OIM, during the OC4J Instance Configuration Assistan

Hi, running RHEL 4 32Bit Linux. There's an installation of the SOA Suite 10.1.3.1 (Release 2) on /u01/app/oracle/OracleAS_1, and I am installing OIM on /u01/app/oracle/OraHome_2

Use physical disks, not NFS mounts. But you are still restricted to a 10.2 database max. SSO won't install in an 11g database with the repca tools from IDM 10.1.2 and 10.1.4.

    Thanks for your answer....
About it.. let me talk to you the following... I have experienced this crash in Windows XP in a development enviroment, and I think that in an enviroment more robust like Linux this problem woulbe be solved... but no... the same error with less frecuency but the same error...
    About Metalink... they told me....
"...You should be able to log a bug with SUN. The JVM is a SUN product. From the error is looks like an issue with one
of the JVM libraries. Once you submit the hs_err_pid28819.log file, SUN should b
e able to search and find a match in there library regarding the issue...."
But In SUN when I try to register the crash I read the following...
" ...If the crash occurred while running a product developed by a company other than Sun, please report this issue to the vendor of that product. ..."
So I don´t know what to do... Anybody HELP....

Though I made the modification and re-start the OC4J instance, I could see the same error and behavior.
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue please?
    Regards,
    Kumar

This is bit strange. It should work. I tested and works fine for me.
Can you remove the entry from opmn.xml and make sure no typo in server.xml and try again. You might want to reload OPMN (opmnctl reload) and then try restarting OC4J (opmnctl startproc ias-component=OC4J).
Note that value (-DcheckForUpdates) set in opmn.xml overrides the value set in server.xml:

  • Win JDeveloper war file to oc4j instance on solaris??

    Hi,
I have been trying to get a war file that I deployed on JDeveloper (windows release candidate) set up on my solaris oc4j( version 2 dev release). I read on this forum these directions:
"Right click on the myproject.jpr in the JDev navigator and select 'new...', go to Deployment Profiles and select J2EE Web Module (WAR File) - a general screen will pop up asking you to save the deployment profile (you can just use the default if you want). Once you select OK on that, you will get a screen that calls itself the J2EE Web Module Deployment Profile Settings. This is the screen that you can use to enter your information.
Your servlet and javabean classes will go into WEB-INF/classes subdirectory that you see to your left in this window. Simply select the WEB-INF/classes entry and it will display a list of your java sources (it will only place the compiled output in this directory - there is a toggle for it).
Once you have specified that your javabean and servlet classes go in this directory, you should be set. Go ahead and save / close. In your navigation screen under your project (myproject.jpr or whatever your project name is) you will see your files, jsps, etc and something called webapp1.deploy (if you accepted the default). If you right-click on that, you will get a menu that asks a number of things, one of which is to Deploy to EAR file. Select that entry and it will create an ear file for you. You can play with the various settings to change the name of the ear file, but that's about all you have to do. Once this is completed, you can put the EAR file on your linux box or wherever you want, adjust your server.xml and default-web-app.xml files and launch the app!
EXCEPT...I did not deploy to EAR ; I deployed to war and then I just modified two config files (under j2ee/home/config)
    application.xml
    <web-module id="notesWar" path="../../home/applications/notesWar.war" />
    and default-web-app.xml
    <web-module id="notesWar" path="../../home/applications/notesWar.war" />
This seems to work , but when I set up my project in JDeveloper, I specified a target file to run, and within JDeveloper it includes the directory not just the file (which is a windows directory) so I am thinking that when I try to deploy on unix, it doesn't know what target file to run bc it can't find it, but I don't know that that information is even included in the war file... is there somewhere else you specify when you are deploying the war file which html, jsp, etc. needs to be run first. By the way, when I launch the application on the solaris oc4j via war deployment, it goes to the first html file listed in the war (I need it to go the second html file first).

    Hi,
    I am sorry; I mistyped....
I already configured default-web-site.xml with the above values.
The war file will run on the solaris oc4j instance, but it just
runs the wrong initial html. I need a login to be the target
page, but I don't know how to specify that for my particular
    situation.
If I run the application within JDeveloper on Windows
without a war file, it works. I run like this...
Right click on the (.jpr) project file and run...it will go to the
correct run target bc I have specified within the project
settings, the default run target, but when i try to run as a war,
it does not go to the correct run target so I need to know how to
specify a default run target for a war file. I did create the
war after I specified the default run target.
    Thank you!

Subject: How To Start OC4J As Windows Service.
    Doc ID: Note:268307.1 Type: HOWTO
Last Revision Date: 04-JUL-2008 Status: PUBLISHED
    In this Document
    Goal
    Solution
    References
    Applies to:
    Oracle Forms - Version: 9.0.2.9
Oracle Reports Developer - Version: 9.0.2
    IAS/IDS Components Install - Version: 9.0.2 to 10.1.2
    Microsoft Windows (32-bit)
    Goal
To start OC4J as Windows service so that OC4J can be started automatically when system is started.
This avoids user from starting up the instance manually.
    Solution
    Way A:)
    1. Make sure you have "srvany.exe" and "instsrv.exe" installed on your system.
These executables create and allow any Windows application to be run as "service".
    2. Install OC4J instance as a service with the following command on the command prompt.
    C:\services>instsrv oc4j902 c:\services\srvany.exe
where 'services' is the directory with srvany.exe and instsrv.exe executables.
oc4j902 is the name of OC4J instance to be installed as service.
    3. Open 'Services' from the control panel. You will find that this is listed in the list of 'service'.
    4. Click on Startup button. Set startup type for oc4j902 service as automatic.
    5. Under 'Log on As', select 'this' account and select local user name. You will need to retype password .
    6. Run REGEDIT.
    7. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\oc4j902.
    a. Create a key under oc4j902 by right clicking oc4j902 and selecting New Key.
    b. Type in 'Parameters' for your new key value.
    c. Under the 'Parameters' key, create an application string as follows.
    Right click on 'Parameters',
    select New 'String Value'
    Name it as 'Application'.
    d. Double click on the Application value to provide the full path of the script file - startinst.bat which starts OC4J.
    Type E:\9iDS\j2ee\Oracle9iDS\startinst.bat
Here E:\9iDS is the ORACLE_HOME where 9iDS is installed.
    10. Go to the Control panel -> service. Start OC4J service.
Note: srvany.exe and instsrv.exe executables can be downloaded from the following site:
    http://www.taltech.com/TALtech_web/support/sw_tricks/NTService.htm
    Way B.)
Use Java Service Wrapper to install OC4J as a Windows NT Service.
The Wrapper provides a way for a Java Application to request that its own JVM be restarted.
Detailed overview and instructions, using JBoss as an example. (Win32 or Linux / UNIX) is given in

  • Admin_client.jar - connect to a remote standalone oc4j instance

    Hi
I have installed a standalone instance of OC4J on a remote linux box. I am trying to connect to that running instance on a windows box using the admin client jar supplied in the oc4j_admin_client_101310.zip file but get the following error -
Failed at "Could not get DeploymentManager".
I am able to connect to a remote OPMN managed instance and a local standalone instance but not to the remote standalone instance. I know the remote instance is ok as i have logged in and validated the URI using the admin_client.jar on that box. The URI format i am using is as follows -
    deployer:oc4j:host:23791
Is it possible to connect to this instance remotely?
    Thanks

Hey George -- admin_client.jar can connect to local/remote OC4J standalone instances -- it connects to all sorts of things in 10.1.3.
The "could not get deployment manager" message is very vague, I certainly appreciate that.
What it usually comes down to is the deployer URI being incorrect in either the format being used or the host:port being incorrect.
Sounds like you have validated the URL correctly.
Just as a sanity check -- you can ping the remote server from the windows box?
The oc4j standalone instance is up and running?
    The ORMI port is 23791?
What you could do if you want to see if there is an underlying problem is to enable the client side logger for admin_client.jar.
    The doc describes it here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28950/adminclient.htm#CHDHIABJ
Set it progressively to the FINE, FINER, FINEST levels and see if anything suspicious is identified in the log outputs that might be helpful.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Coloring a strictly typedefd FP control crashes LV (Linux)

I thought something that macroscopic would just qualify for a CAR, but my local AE replied "post on forum". Well, here it is. Anyone else sees it, or is it just me?
    Support Question
Attempting to color a strictly typedefd FP control crashes LV (linux)
    Steps to Reproduce
create a custom control, e.g. with a numeric
    make it strict typedef
    create a new VI
drag the icon of the custom control from its window corner to the FP of the new VI
select the paintbrush on the Tools palette
click anywhere on the control on the VI FP as if to color it
    LV crashes with:
    LabVIEW caught fatal signal
    12.0.1 - Received SIGSEGV
Reason: address not mapped to object
    Attempt to reference address: 0x0xe2e2e6
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    on stderr.
Perfectly reproducible on two different systems.
Software Details: LabVIEW Base Development System 2012 SP1 and 2014 SP1
Operating System: Ubuntu 14.04 (ok, not officially supported, but)

While this does not explain the crash, it does tell you that you cannot do that. From the LV help:
    Strict Type Definitions
A strict type definition forces everything about an instance to be identical to the strict type definition, except the caption, label, description, tip strip, and default value. As with type definitions, the data type of a strict type definition remains the same everywhere you use the strict type definition. Strict type definitions also define other values, such as range checking on numeric controls and the item names in ring controls. The only VI Server properties available for strict type definitions are those that affect the appearance of the control or indicator, such as Visible, Disabled, Key Focus, Blinking, Position, and Bounds."
You cannot change the color of a strict typedef. If you need to cahnge the color, use the standard (non-strict) typedef.

  • One Oracle Application Server and multiple OC4J Instances

While we are getting new server (for development) we have to set-up a Development and Production enviroment for our project (dont have previous OAS installation) but on the same machine.
So, is a good option to have One OAS INstallation (Ora Home) and then create multiple OC4J instances, one for each environment (Development, QA and Production)?, is it possible? How to manage deployments between OC4J instances, simulating different contexts if they are in the same server and under the same HTTP Server? Will be there conflicts?

    Hi,
you can do this and OracleAs will manage the different instances. The deployment can be done with Enterprise Manager in which case you select the OC4J instance first before deploying. If deploying from JDeveloper, you can specify the OC4J instance when creating the named connection
