OC4J Load Balancing on 10G R2

Greetings!
I am trying to set up OC4J with multiple JVMs on 10G R2 and did this by setting the Number of Processes parameter to 2 under Server Properties. We need sticky sessions in our app - my small tests so far seems to indicate this is working without me having to do anything.
The reason for doing multiple processes is that our app consumes a lot of memory and with the restriction on the max JVM heap size, we are trying to exploit the full capacity of high-end servers.
Here are my questions:
1. Is this really as easy as it seems ? :-) Am I missing something - settings etc.? I went through documentation below and it does not have anything specific on how to choose number of processes except saying it is "specific to a computer."
2. Is session replication disabled by default? There is a link on the OC4J administration page for replication which is empty. This works for us as not all objects we put in session are serializable.
3. We have a configuration file that is read by a singleton. For multiple processes we want different values to be read by the singletons running on different processes. Is there a pattern for doing this? I am thinking of creating a lock file/index file to indicate if another process has already read the configuration. Anything better?
I am new to this. Will appreciate all comments/suggestions.
Regards,
Arnab.

Hello Arnab,
It looks like the Metalink Note 175593.1
"Configuring Multiple OC4J Instances as a High Availability Cluster"
would be of a good help to answer your questions.
Sincerely,
Steff

  • FRM-92101: Load Balancing Forms 10g with Web Cache

    Hi,
I´m having some problems with Oracle Forms and Webcache 10g and I was wondering if you
    could help.
Machines: (Pentium IV 2.6 GHz; 2GB RAM; 80GB HD)
    A. Red Hat Linux AS 2.1
Oracle AS 10g - Infrastructure Installation
    B. Windows 2000 Server - Service Pack 4
Oracle AS 10g - BI and Forms Installation (Using Infrastructure on machine A)
    C. Windows 2000 Server - Service Pack 4
Oracle AS 10g - BI and Forms Installation (Using Infrastructure on machine A)
I didn´t apply any Patchsets of Oracle AS 10g. My current version is 9.0.4.0 .
    Goal:
Use Oracle Webcache 10g on machine B for Load Balancing an Oracle Forms Application
    on machines B and C.
    Facts:
The Oracle AS 10g installation on the 3 machines was made without problems.
The Forms Applications are running without problems on both Forms servers in machine B and C.
    Symptoms:
I´m getting the following error when I try to acces the forms application through Webcache:
FRM-92101: There was a failure in the forms server during startup.
This could happen due to invalid configuration.
Please look in the web-server log file for details.
But, this error happens ONLY when BOTH OC4J_BI_Forms instances (machines B and C) are
    running.
When just one of the OC4J_BI_Forms is running everything works fine.
    Webcache Configuration:
I´ve followed Metalink note 207668.1: Configuring Web Cache as a Load Balancer for Application Servers
step by step to make the configuration of the following components:
    1. Configuration of the origin servers
    2. Configuration of Site definitions
    3. Configuration of Site to server mapping
After that, I´ve follwed the Metalink note 229900.1: Integrating and using Web Cache with Forms 9i for Load Balancing
step by step to make the configuration of the following components:
    4. Session Binding
Then I try to test the Load Balancing and I got the error FRM-92101 when both OC4J_BI_Forms
    instance were running.
I´ve searched Metalink and found note 268830.1: Webcache Won't Load Balance 2 Forms Instances.
Following the note instructions I did the following changes:
Added these lines at the end of HTTPD.conf (machine B):
    CookieTracking On
    CookieName myformscookie1
Added these lines at the end of HTTPD.conf (machine C):
    CookieTracking On
    CookieName myformscookie2
    In Webcache configuration:
I´ve Changed the default session binding from JSESSIONID to "ANY SET COOKIE" for the
    site's session binding.
But even after these changes I´m getting FRM-92101 error on the same conditions.
How can I solve this problem ?
    Thank you in advance.

Just ran into this problem last Tuesday, Nov.30 and applied the changes today.
My configuration is similar to yours: 9.0.4 web cache on machine A, 9.0.4 10gAS forms and reports standalone on machine B and C (not a cluster, no infra).
I appended the Cookie lines you mentioned in httpd.conf located in $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf in both machines B and C.
One important thing you may have missed. After changing httpd.conf in each 9iAS instance, you need to make the change known to dcmctl so issue:
    dcmctl updateConfig -ct ohs
Then do the following for each 9iAS instance and it should be ready for webcache:
    dcmctl stop
    dcmctl start
Setup Any-set-Cookie in webcache instead of JSESSIONID and the whole thing should now work. You can run a form through machine A which will load balance to either machine B or C (which can both be up). Then, try shutting down 9iAS on machine B or C and run a form again. They now all work.

Has any one ever got this to work consistently? We are an ERP product written mostly in forms (904) and are trying to implement are largest customer there performance issue so we need the load balancing to work. • Load Balancing with 10g RAC

    Hi,
I have one query regarding balancing load with RAC.
We have some batch processes executed from shell script in Oracle RAC environment where a separate node is used for failover only. There are some issues related with performance. We are looking for a solution to utilize 'idle' node used for failover to resolve this issue.
I want to know whether the below mentioned scenario is possible to achieve with 10gRel2 RAC.
A batch process is running and it is utilizing all resources (CPU) of instance 1, then it is possible by any means that this process be split and distributed to idle instance 2 on another node?
    Looking for expert advice.
    Regards
    Amit

    Hi Amit,
I;ve done lots of RAC implementations, and it;s critical to set-up the primary node accordig to the "type" of table access. For example, cistomer queries on node 1, order queries on node 2, etc. Minimizing pinging is very important!
Staring in Oracle 10g release 2, Oracle JDBC and ODP.NET provide connection pool load balancing facilities through integration with the new “load balancing advisory” tool. This replaces the more-cumbersome listener-based load balancing technique.
    I have more notes here:

    Hope this helps. . .

  • Session replication in oc4j load balancing not working ..

    Hi All,
I have windows 2000 machine. I have installed 2 instances of oc4j running on ports 8888 and 8889. I started the loadbalancer.jar in the first instance, started the first oc4j instance and then started the second oc4j instance. I have a common application deployed on both instance1 and instance2 and that is nothing but out famous SessionServlet.
If I access this servlet using http://localhost:80/app/servlet/SessionServlet then I am getting a count as 1 . My loadbalancer that is started from first oc4j instance(running on port 8888) is showing that the request is routed to the first instance. I stopped my first instance1 and then again from the same browser/session/client if I access the same servlet using http://localhost:80/app/servlet/SessionServlet then still I am seeing the count as 1 instead of 2 . At this point my loadbalancer is showing that the request is routed to the second oc4j instance(running on port 8889) since first instance is stopped. So why am I seeing the count as 1 instead as 2.
    Also,
    1. Is it enough that we start the loadbalancer.jar in the first oc4j instance. What about the loadbalancer.jar in the second oc4j instance ?
    2. We all know that Apache HTTP Server runs on port 80. But since I didnt[i]Long postings are being truncated to ~1 kB at this time.

thank you debu, I have one doubt . In the clustering/load-balancing documentation at metalink(doc id: 151717.1) it is said that in point 4b that we should add the tag <cluster-config /> to orion-web.xml file but this file will be created only after the web application is deployed and it is accessed atlest for one time. So is it that we should first deploy the web application and then access it for atlest one time then stop the server and add this tag .. or is there any other way workaround ?

  • Monitoring oc4j load balancing

    Hi
We are using mod_oc4j to load balance our OC4J_BI_Forms application between 3 application servers. Is it possible to monitor those servers ? Can i add or remove servers "on the fly" without restarting the servers?
We use 9iAS rel 2 with Windows 2000
    Regards,
    Louis

Thanks for the post. We had a little difficulty getting enough specifics out of the documentation to answer all our questions. But opened a TAR and got a good engineer who worked with us to get a custom load balancing solution that is working very well for us.
    Thanks again,

For others out there that are interested, we ended up with a very simple load balancing setup that simply requires that the mod_oc4j.conf be modified to group the containers.
    From Oracle:
To implement the solution, please execute the following steps:
    1. Deploy application into different containers with the same application name.
    2. Modify the mod_oc4j.conf as follows:
    Oc4jMout /test <oc4j instance 1>, <oc4j instance 1>,...

  • OC4J load balancing

We got multiple JVMs configured and running. Since we are not able to share the session among the JVMs we are having issue running the application on mutiple JVM since the OC4J is doing the load balancing. For example, if request is established on one JVM the next request is sent to another thus the application fails by not finding the session object. Is there a way we can have the sticky on OC4J so that if the session is established on one JVM then continue to use that JVM through out the life cycle of the session. Another word load balance only if the request is new. Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay, how about if you have multiple web application that are sharing the session.
Is there a way we could say these web application should be running on the same JVM? If you mean by this that you have different WAR files (either standalone or contained in an EAR file) that need to share common session state, then we don't support this with OC4J. A session is bounded within the Web module that it is created within. I think someone on here had come up with a way to do once before it using a different cookie name and a common cookie path but its not something we do by default.
Do you know how to configure them to run on the same JVM. Would parent work?
Could we make one web app parent for others - if so would it guarantee to run the the same JVM?The parent config doesn't dictate any runtime behaviour -- it's configuration, classloading based parenting only.
We have a scenario where our web applications are dependent upon each other - meaning they need to run on the same JVM together since they are sharing the session. It sounds to me that if you have this sort of requirement, then it'd be worth your while looking at our Coherence*Web functionality. This provides a way to allow the Coherence distributed cache to be used as the session/session-replication infrastructure -- effectively switching out the native session manager from OC4J (and other J2EE servers, Tomcat, etc.).
It has a switch that enables cross Web module state sharing. Because it's a distributed cache too, it will allow all JVMs to see/use the same view of the current session state.
    See here for more details:

Can anyone point me to some good documentation for configuring load balancing for oc4j instances?

  • A question about oc4j load balancing/ failover behaviour

    Hi
I have been trying to set up load balancing using 9.0.2 standalone oc4j instances that share sessions.
    - I set up two oc4j instances (say oc4j1 and oc4j2) pointing to a load balancer entering the following in <J2EE_HOME>config\http-web-site.xml:
    <web-site host="<ip>" port="<port>" display-name="Oracle 9iAS Java HTTP WebSite" cluster-island="1" >
    and
    <frontend host="<host>" port="80" />
    - I entered <cluster-config/> and <session-tracking/> in each oc4j instance's orion-web.xml, and <distributable/> in their web.xml files.
    - I started the loadbalancer(java -jar loadbalancer.jar -debug) and the oc4j instances.
Everything works fine up to a point. They are both added to the cluster and the debug messages show that requests are being routed to oc4j1 and cluster session value update messages are sent by oc4j1 and received by oc4j2. When I shut down oc4j1 requests are routed to oc4j2 and session information is maintained.
However, when I start up oc4j1 again, it does not appear to be receiving the session value updates now being sent by oc4j2 so if I now shut down oc4j2 the session is lost. Can anyone please tell me what I have missed?

  • Load Balancing & Fault tolerance in Oracle Apps

    Hello
I am pretty new to Oracle Apps and Oracle 9iAS
We are trying to asked to find out the ways of deplying load balancing and fault tolerance in Oracle Apps
I have gone thru the following articles of metalink and some more from google
Configuring Web Cache as a Load Balancer for Application Servers
Create new middle tier node in existing Apps 11i environment using cloning and then load balance
Integrating and using Web Cache with Forms 9i for Load Balancing
Running Multiple OC4J Instances From a Single Install of 9iAS 1.0.2.2
LOAD BALANCING ORACLE APPLICATIONS ON UNIX
    Load Balancing in 11i
    OC4J Clustering Setup
OC4J Load Balancing for Forms 9i
Setting up 11i E-Business suite using a hardware load balancer
Sharing an APPL_TOP in Oracle Applications 11i
In Oracle Apps Concepts pdf, found that
Load balancing occurs when there are multiple installations of web server, forms server, reports server, concurrent manager server etc
Lets consider forms server component of middle tier
Can there be multiple INSTANCES of forms server within SINGLE INSTALLATION ???
If it has to be MULTIPLE INSTALLATIONS, then it will require multiple physical machines
What is software load balancing then ???
    Also read that
Oracle 9i AS instance is combition of Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) and one or more instances of Oracle9iAS Container for J2EE (OC4J)
Thus software load balancing can be implemented for Web server component of middle tier using multiple instances of OC4J ???
Forms metrix server configuration is hardware load balancing ??
What about Oracle9iAS Web Cache clustering ??
Please clarify the doubts and suggest me the way
    Thanks a lot

    dear all can any one help me on the following;

  • Deploy Forms and Reports with Load Balancing

I am trying to determine what we need to install here. I have read OracleAS, Web Cache, Application Server, and
Forms documents and have no answer still.
We are currently run 9iAS with Forms and Reports 6i only.
I did not do any of those installs. We are migrating to
Forms and Reports 10g. I need to setup an OracleAS 10g
Forms and Reports application server with the ability to
do Load Balancing over 2 windows Web servers to handle
4,000+ users. The application database will be on its own
    Windows server.
Do I need to install the Infastructure, BI, and Web cache?
Or just Oracle 10g Application Server option? Or other?
Do I need to install it on both web servers and do
something like clustering? Do I need to install Web
cache? I just took the 10g AS class and basically did not learn anything about deploying Forms and Reports.
Can anyone give me a place to find the things I need to
    install and setup?
    Thanks.
    Kim

I am a DBA and have not done an iAS or AS installation
before but am now required to learn it. We will be using
SSL and no load balancing hardware. We setup for other
customer sites and setting Windows servers in the past.
We have not done load balancing before.
I am just confused with all the 10gAS options there are to
install to just run 10g Forms and Reports and setup
OracleAS 10g with the load balancing features.
So I just need to install OracleAS Forms and Reports
Server if I am just installing Forms and Reports with SSL.
But if for Load Balancing Oracle 10g I need to cluster
    just Reports 10g? I thought I would need OracleAS10g
installed on my two Windows servers and somehow cluster
or let the two know they are the same web page handling
the incoming requests? I do know about Apache redirct. Is
that an Apache feature and is it covered in an Oracle
documentation? They did not cover it in class either.

Load balancing 10g forms - Connection from new browser window not supported
We're experimenting with using webcache to load balance between multiple applications servers running OC4J forms processes.
We currently have one machine with infrastructure and mid-tier (BI & Forms) installed, which is being used for the webcache functionality, this is load balancing between 2 other servers each of which just have the mid-tier (BI & Forms) installation
In order to get this to work, I had to follow the instructions in the Forms deployment guide : http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_11/web.1012/b14032/tuning.htm#sthref707
The main gist of this is that you need to set the following in the orion-web.xml file in order that the sessions are maintained:
    <session-tracking
    cookies="enabled">
    </session-tracking>
This all works fine in most cases.
The problem I am having is if I do one of the following on the client machine:
    1) From IE6 / IE7 run a copy of a forms application. Then open a new window using the "New Window" menu option, and attempt to run another forms application.
    2) In IE7 or Firefox 2.0 open a copy of the forms application, and then open a new tab and try and open another forms application.
If I try either of these I get a FRM-92101 error, and the following is displayed in the java console:
oracle.forms.net.ConnectionException: Connection from new browser window not supported
From trawling various forums (including metalink and otn) it looks like a problem with the way coockies are handled.
Unfortunately the usual workaround is to ensure that the session tracking option in the orion-web.xml file is disabled.
The problem is that I need this enabled in order for the load balancing to work.
Does anyone know of any other workarounds or patches that might help resolve this?
We're using Application server 10.1.2.0.2 running on windows 2003 servers.

You were right. Carriage returns were stopping it from working (the document is laid out over separate lines, so I assumed it would make no difference...).
I've now managed to get it so the forms at least run, but they are all being run in the forms OC4J instance on the same machine as the OHS.
Has anyone actually managed to get this to work, or am I doing something wrong?
I did wonder if using an OHS instance on a machine with no forms installation would make any difference?
I had raised a support call via metalink on this subject, but they eventually came to the conclusion that the only way to do this is with a hardware load balancer (Despite several documents suggesting that webcache is the way to go (including the forms deployment manual)).
I'm at the point now of giving up and writing some custom scripts to do the job instead...

  • Cluster (Load balancing) implementation in obiee 10g

    Hi All,
We need to implement clustering (Active-Active for Load balancing) in our project. We use both analytics and bi publisher. We also need to deploy analytics/bipublisher in to weblogic server for SSO purpose.
    Now we have two machines.
As of now We did the installation of obiee10g (while installing we selected "Complete" button) in both machines. Could any body tell us how to implement clustering w.r.t to weblogic.
To proceed futher we need to know..
+1. Did normal clusrtering method in 10g with oc4j server differs when we deploy application in weblogic server..?+
+2. Can I use any of the two machines to create a shared folder and place rpd to give the path in REPOSITORY_PUBLISHING_DIRECTORY or should I use third machine other than these two machine..???+
    Any help is greatly apprciated.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi User,
Did you configured clustering wrt to OC4j or WLS..?
    A. Weblogic.
    2. Can you tell me how it differs wrt WLS..??
    A. We can't explain here please refer the following link.
    http://www.iwarelogic.com/2010/01/supply-chain-management-w-r-t-oracle-applications-312/
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/upgrade.1111/e10126/wls_oc4j_comparisons.htm
3.On top of these two machines we have a virtual IP?
    A. You can use virtual Ip's.
In your project Weblogic also clustering mode am I write?
What could be the process.. First we need to follow the clustering method as if there was no WLS and later deploy the application and need to do the changes wrt to WLServer (or) First we need to deploy the application in WLServer and for clustering need to do changes in/wrt to WLServer..??
A . First we need to deploy the application in WLServer and for clustering need to do changes in/wrt to WLServe.
Note: As per my knowledge please implement this way.
    1. Deploy analytic.war in your weblogc.
    2. If it is possible please implement Weblgoc clustering also.
    3. SSO implementation.
    4. Cluster implementation.
This is the way am implemented in my project.
    My project tool details.
    1. Weblogic
    2. OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1
    3. Oracle 11g
    4. OS - AIX
If you have any concerns please post me.
    Award points it is useful.
    Thanks,
    Satya
