Oci_password_change() ORA-1017 gotcha and Instant Client 11.2.0.3

Since Instant Client 11.2.0.3 is available and many people might be thinking of upgrading, I just blogged about a gotcha with oci_password_change() that occurs unless the client libraries and Oracle DB are upgraded at the same time: http://blogs.oracle.com/opal/entry/php_oci_password_change_ora

Hi!
What you did is correct,
To install odbc you just have to copy the files inside instantclient-odbc-windows.x64-11.2.0.3.0.zip to C:\OracleClient64 as you already did.
When you run odbc_install.exe it popup a cmd prompt for very short period of time. It´s fine.
What it does is to create the values you saw in the registry, an thats why if you run it a second time it said that already exist. With that, you have installed odbc, now you can test it following this link:
http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/8.0/projects_and_teams/connect_to_oracle_via_odbc.html
Hope it helps

  • Oracle Express 11g and Instant Client

    I installed Oracle Express 11g on a Win 7 32 bit machine.
I verified from another machine I could connect to this instance using SqlPlus.
On a different Win 7 32 bit machine I downloaded and installed instant client.
I'm unable to connect to the Oracle Express 11g instance.
Firewall is turned off and User Account Control is set as low as it will go.
I set the PATH as it tells you too.
I did create a TNS_ADMIN pointing to tnsnames file I'm using.
But when I try connecting in SqlPlus using 'system @ dbname' I keep getting the following error message:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    I'm out of options.

  • CVE-2013-3751 and Instant Client 11.2.0.3

The README for the July 2013 Database GI Patch Set Update mentions Instant Client Installations needing Database PSU 11.2.0.3.7 to address CVE-2013-3751. Further details on the CVE at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpujuly2013verbose-1899830.html#DB say “Successful attack of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized Operating System takeover including arbitrary code execution. “  The Patch README references the Oracle Call Interface Programmer’s Guide and in there I found this relevant section http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10646/oci01int.htm#autoId37
That document spells out the steps required create Instant Client zip or RPM files.  That’s great, but here at my company we haven’t gone through these steps in the past.  We simply go to the appropriate page on oracle.com ( Instant Client Downloads ) and download what we need.
I’m assuming the vulnerable file is in the “basic” package.  I looked at linux x64 zip today and it has not been updated.
    unzip -l instantclient-basic-linux.x64-11.2.0.3.0.zip

    I have 2 questions.
Q1. If I apply only the database server home patch, will my database server still be vulnerable to takeover if the unpatched Oracle Instant Client from oracle.com is left out on my various app servers?
Q2. Is there any effort planned at Oracle to replace the vulnerable versions of Instant Client posted on oracle.com with updated versions no longer vulnerable?

I opened a Service Request with My Oracle Support.  Here is the response.

    Hi,
I have both Oracle Client 9.2 and Instant Client 10.2.0.1.0 on my laptop. How to make Toad 8.5.1 locate tnsnames.ora file for instant client.
When I open Toad, and selects "Instant Client 10.2.0.1.0" as installed client, it shows the error message "tnsnames.ora not found!"

Sal, your comment is pretty irrelevant to the question :^)
user570251, since you are restricted to using Windows, it will not be easy for you to use two different Oracle clients on the same machine.
Basically, you'll have to change TNS_ADMIN whenever you want to change between clients.
Why do you need two client versions on your computer?

  • Why do I need instant client if I installed 11g1 and it works

    sqldeveloper works
    em works
    sqlplus works
I have a problem with oci8, php 5.2.6, apache 2.2 ...all are installed and working
All the instructions I've found (and there are many) talk about
    (1) Zend installs what I already have
    (2) installing apache, oci8, php and instant client form scratch
I am NOT going to reduce a working system to scratch.
BTW my oci programs work and they have in the past worked through a client.

What Oracle Software is installed on the machine: client or server?
I concur that there is no need for Instant Client here, indeed it would be a bad idea.
Anything that works with Instant Client should also work with the regular client.
If you encounter any Oracle-specific error messages, feel free to post them and ask for an opinion (even though this forum is reserved for Instant Client, it might be an obvious problem).

  • Problem using Instant Client 10g with PHP4.3.10-16 on Debian Sarge

    Hello,
My current email is [email protected]
I am trying to use PHP on Debian box using Oracle 10gR2 on a RH 4 server. Everything works fine individually, but I cannot get PHP4 to use InstantClient to connect to the Oracle Server. This is what I've done:
Oracle 10gR2 works fine on the RH 4 server. Listener is running and all required OS security is in place and works (TCP_wrappers, etc.).
Client machine runs Debian 3.1 (Sarge). It works fine and SSH connectivity to RH4 server works.
Instant Client 10gR2 installed on Debian client and works fine. Tested SQL*Plus connection to the RH server. I installed Instant Client from the zip file.
I did have to add libclntsh.so to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig to get Debian to use it, though.
Apache2.0.54-5 on Debian client works fine. Web pages on it can be opened in browsers from other machines.
Installed PHP4.3.10-16 on Debian client using following:
    ./configure --with-oci8-instant-client=<dir of my choice>
    --enable-sigchild
I first checked ./configure help and the option with-oci8-instant-client was there.
Configure went well. Log showed checking for Instant Client files.
Ran make. Saw numerous Instant Client message as words scrolled.
    Ran make install. Successful.
Restarted Apache2 with following env variables:
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<my Instant Client directory)
TNS_ADMIN=<same directory where I put my sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files).
    SQLPATH=<same directory>
I know this is correct because Instant Client SQL*Plus can connect.
Browsers on other machines can view simple php scripts run from the Debian box.
BUT, phpinfo does NOT show an OCI8 section.
phpinfo does show the correct extension directory, though.
Somehow, my PHP4 configure and make is not using the --with-oci8-instant-client option.
I checked $PHP4HOME/ext/oci8/config.m4 file and the verbiage IS in there to use the --with-oci8-instant-client option, either with the default location or the extension_dir location.
I tried using the new ZendCore product, even though it is not certified for Debian. It installed okay but I could not get PHP5 to work. I uninstalled it successfully and redid all of the above.
So, any ideas as to what else I can do here? Other than not use Debian (which is probably the wisest thing to do). And I suppose I could install a thick Oracle client, assuming that Debian would take it. But I prefer the Instant Client.
I tried the PHP ./configure syntax I've seen several places on this forum.
    ./configure --with-oci8=instantclient,<directory>
This syntax may work on Red Hat machines but it throws a syntax error on Debian and aborts the configure.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks, but that did not work. Configure aborts because it cannot find the required OCI8 libraries. The --with-oci8 option is for the Oracle "thick" client.  I have only the Instant Client...and am not interested in loading the older client.
I may have my own solution next week, though. I will be loading RH4 on a new server and will then install ZendCore and forget all about using Oracle with Debian.
Update on trying ZendCore on Debian Sarge:
I tried installing it again yesterday. The install seemed go to well, and said it was successful.
It did NOT load PHP5, however. Nor did it load the Instant Client. My previously installed PHP4 and Instant Client remained in my original directories.

  • Instant Client with SQL Server - HELP!!

    G'day all...
My goal is to connect to a server using Oracle Database version 8.1.7.4, from a server which does not have either Oracle Database or the full Oracle Client, preferrably using SQL Server DTS packages.
With that said, I have installed instant client basic and instant client ODBC suppliment on our first development server using the instructions at the following link without any difficulties, although I do admit that I only have a tnsnames.ora file and not a sqlnet.ora file:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
The trouble is, when I attempt to deploy it on any of our other servers it fails. When I attempt to connect using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle in a DTS package in SQL Server I get the following error message:
HResult of 0x8004005 (-2147467259) returned Unexpected error occurred. An error result was returned without an error message.
(Note: This is seen on all other servers I've tried this on except for the first one).
I have also tried setting up a System ODBC connection using the Instant Client driver but it returned this error message:
    Unable to connect
    SQLState=S1000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
In desperation I have also tried installing the Oracle RDB Driver and the Oracle 8.1.7.8.1.0 ODBC driver. Both appear to install successfully yet nothing seems to work.
As far as I can tell,l these are the differences between the first server and the other servers:
    - First server is MS SQL Server 2000 version: 8.00.760, rest are 8.00.818
    - First server is running MS SQL Server Analysis services, rest are not
    - First server is MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server, rest are MS Windows 2000 Server
So my first question: Does anyone know if the Instant Client tool works with SQL Server version: 8.00.818?
My second question: Can anyone else suggest something that I haven't tried yet, short of installing the Full Oracle Client on this server? Not that I'm opposed to doing that, it's just that it's a last resort idea as of now...
Please help - need to roll this into production soon...

Kent, I see that many others have reported that error (doing
a google search), but I see no ready answers. I saw something that
reminded me of a connection string value that I've seen answer some
problems. May be worth a shot for you: try adding this string to
the connection string (in "advanced options") for your datasource:
    AuthenticationMethod=Type2
If it doesn't solve it, remove it. But keep it handy in case
it ever may help with some other problem.
Here's one other possible answer for you:
    http://www.webmasterkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/coldfusion-server/3206/SQL-Server-2000-Windows-A uth
Sorry I can't be more clear for you.

  • Win7 x64 - how to configure 32-bit Instant Client

I am having difficulty getting Instant Client to establish an ODBC link to Excel 2007, a 32-bit app.  My OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Windows 2008 domain.
I installed Oracle 11g Client 64-bit (11.2.0.3.0), Instant Client Basic 64bit, and Instant Client ODBC 64bit.  Path and TNSNAMES parameters were set correctly, and I was able to use Windows Admin Tools to successfully establish a connection to PowerSchool's Oracle database.  So far, so good.
When I tried to use this connection in Excel 2007, I got an error message stating that "the specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application."  More research led me to conclude that I need to install 32-bit Instant Client Basic and ODBC.
So I downloaded the appropriate versions of both of these, installed it into c:\ora\<username>\product\11.2.0\client32 (a sibling to the 64-bit client_2 folder), and now I'm stumped.  Running windows\sysWOW64\odbcad2.exe, I see what I think is the 64-bit client, which gives an error message about incompatible architecture (again, 64 vs 32 bit).
What parameters need to be set with odbcad2.exe, and how?  Do I need to run the odbcconf.exe program in sysWOW64?  I tried adding the ...\client32 folder to PATH; no effect.  Is this described in excruciating detail anywhere?

    Ferdimar,
This problem sounds like the server is incorrectly configured. You can try verifying that it is setup correctly for the TNS listener.

  • Instant-client odbc installation

I am trying to connect to remote database using R .So i downloaded client-basic-nt and instant-client -odbc from oracle .Unzipped both of them in the same folder and then tried to run odbc_install.exe.
It doesn't give me an error but it i feel it just doesn't execute and escapes .First i thought that it did install the client but i cant see any sqlnet.ora files and tnsname.ora file .In fact i cant find oracle/network directory ?can anyone suggest me is there another set of installation i require before this step ?

this is how I installed Instant client:
    1.downloaded oracle client extracted to C:\Oracle Client\
all the files extracted are in the folder as you see here C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
    2.created a C:\Oracle Client\tnsnames.ora
make sure you have the db connection details you want to connect to in this tns file
    3. set env. variables. (I hope you know how to do this in windows)
    Variable name : TNS_ADMIN Variable value : C:\Oracle Client
    Variable name : LD_LIBRARY_PATH Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
Variable name : Path Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2 (include this to already existing variable 'path')
hope this helps. reply back if you have a question.

  • Triying to intall oracle instant client

    Hi Buddies;
I have to install oracle instant client in linux5 Red hat Enterprise.
I got to create the next:
Instant Client Package - Basic and Instant Client Package - SQL*Plus unzip it and make sqlplus runnable from anywhere ( set new PATH or copy to defined PATH) and test SQLPLUS sqlplus user/passwd@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=IP or hostname)(Port=port))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=sid)))
Is the first time I doing this; So I proceed to download the following files:
    instantclient-basic-linux32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip
    oracle-instantclient-basic-10.2.0.3-1.i386.rpm
I unzipped the firt one and now I got a new directory (instantclient_10_2) whi these files:
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 72480394 Nov 15 2006 libociei.so
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 67053 Nov 15 2006 genezi
    -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 5486009 Nov 15 2006 libnnz10.so
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 1398088 Nov 15 2006 libocci.so.10.1
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 18825267 Nov 15 2006 libclntsh.so.10.1

    -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 120135 Nov 15 2006 libocijdbc10.so
My doubt is, which of them to execute?
And what I have to do with file oracle-instantclient-basic-10.2.0.3-1.i386.rpm?
Besides, I don't see anything related with sqlplus, and I understand I need that.
May be this is something simple, but I not sure what to do.
    Could somebody help me ?
    Thanks and best Regards;
    Al

At first try to check the Instant Client download page again: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/linuxsoft.html
As you can see there are several categories of packages and description for these packages.
Instant Client Package - Basic: All files required to run OCI, OCCI, and JDBC-OCI applications
Instant Client Package - Basic Lite: Smaller version of the Basic, with only English error messages and Unicode, ASCII, and
Instant Client Package - JDBC Supplement: Additional support for XA, Internationalization, and RowSet operations under JDBC
Instant Client Package - SQL*Plus: Additional libraries and executable for running SQL*Plus with Instant Client
Instant Client Package - SDK: Additional header files and an example makefile for developing Oracle applications with Instant
Instant Client Package - ODBC: Additional libraries for enabling ODBC applications
Instant Client Package - WRC: Workload Replay Client used to replay workload for RAT's DB Replay Feature
You need to download those packages which are required for your application (for example).
Packages are provided in two versions. ZIP and RPM (for Redhat Package Manager).
You don't need to download both of versions. You can choose only one - ZIP or RPM, it depends on you.
Now you said, you need to use SQLPLUS.
1.So, you need to download these two packages (assume that you are running 32bit Linux):
    instantclient-basic-linux32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip
instantclient-sqlplus-linux32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip2. Unzip these packages and you will see new directory named instantclient_10_2
    3. Place this directory where you want (i.e to /opt directory)
mv instantclient_10_2 /opt/4. set the environment (still using /opt directory)
    export PATH=/opt/instantclient_10_2:$PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/opt/instantclient_10_2Note: To make this settings permanent put this commands to shell profile file (i.e.: For bash it is .bash_profile file) in user's directory or to /etc/profile file to make this settings global for any user.
    5. Tnsnames file. By default TNS settings is searched in these directories and in order as follows:
/home/<current user>/.tnsnames.ora (Note the dot in .tnsnames.ora in this case)
    /etc/tnsnames.ora
/<path to directory where the instant client directory is located>/instantclient_10_2/network/admin/tnsnames.ora (in our case it's the /opt directory)
    Hope that helps.

  • Instant client support for oracle rac ?

My questions is does instant client support rac ?
    example : tnsnames.ora
    RAC =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB1-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB2-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = RAC)
    (FAILOVER_MODE =
    (TYPE = SELECT)
    (METHOD = BASIC)
    (RETRIES = 180)
    (DELAY = 5)
    )

If you are asking if Instant Client can connect to a RAC cluster, the answer is yes. There is no functional difference between a full client and Instant Client. I hope that helps!

  • Segment violation in instant client library

    Hi,
    I have the following problem:
A Jboss/Java application accesses a database over JDBC. We use the OCI driver and Instant Client 10.2.0.1 connected to a two node Oracle RAC.
After several days continuous operation this application crashes with a segment violation, either in libclntsh.so.10.1 or in libocijdbc10.so.
In the mean time the RSS of the process has grown from about 1 GB to 2.5 to 2.7 GB but all Java heap space (and other allocations) are clearly within their set boundaries.
Does anybody now if there is a memory leak in the native code in instant client or elsewhere?
Operating system is Red Hat ES 3, Instant Client is version 10.2.0.1 and Java's version is 1.5.0_06.
    regards

  • Instant client - compatibility

I'd like to try the OCI thick-client option to get around some irritations I've encountered with the thin client (cancelling queries, large data sets). So far I've not found a version that works. The only advice I've found is to use a more recent version than my DB, and to use 64 bit as I'm on a 64 bit machine. I've tried 4 different instant client installs, including the most recent (11.2.0.3.0) and I don't have time to try them all. The highest version caused SQL Dev to crash completely! With lower versions I get:
An error was encountered performing the requested operation: oracle.jdbc.driver.T2CConnection.getLibraryVersionNumber()I Vendor code 0
Could someone point me to a matrix of tested/supported versions?
My SQL Dev version: 3.2.20.09, Database versions vary between 9i and 10g

I do suspect yours is not a problem of compatibility between SQLDeveloper and instant client, but with the ojdbc6.jar file shipped with SQLDeveloper and the instant client.
You should try to set an ORACLE_HOME variable pointing to your most recent instant client installation, this way SQLDeveloper should be able to pick up the correct ojdbc6.jar shipped with your instant client of choice.
You can check the currently selected ojdbc6.jar by lookin at the property
    jdbc.libraryin
Help -> About -> PropertiesObviously the instant client you point to should be of the same "bit level" of the SQLDeveloper installation as Jeff already pointed out.
