Win7 x64 - how to configure 32-bit Instant Client

I am having difficulty getting Instant Client to establish an ODBC link to Excel 2007, a 32-bit app.  My OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Windows 2008 domain.
I installed Oracle 11g Client 64-bit (11.2.0.3.0), Instant Client Basic 64bit, and Instant Client ODBC 64bit.  Path and TNSNAMES parameters were set correctly, and I was able to use Windows Admin Tools to successfully establish a connection to PowerSchool's Oracle database.  So far, so good.
When I tried to use this connection in Excel 2007, I got an error message stating that "the specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application."  More research led me to conclude that I need to install 32-bit Instant Client Basic and ODBC.
So I downloaded the appropriate versions of both of these, installed it into c:\ora\<username>\product\11.2.0\client32 (a sibling to the 64-bit client_2 folder), and now I'm stumped.  Running windows\sysWOW64\odbcad2.exe, I see what I think is the 64-bit client, which gives an error message about incompatible architecture (again, 64 vs 32 bit).
What parameters need to be set with odbcad2.exe, and how?  Do I need to run the odbcconf.exe program in sysWOW64?  I tried adding the ...\client32 folder to PATH; no effect.  Is this described in excruciating detail anywhere?

Ferdimar,
This problem sounds like the server is incorrectly configured. You can try verifying that it is setup correctly for the TNS listener.

    Read the documentation (I have given following links assuming you are running a 32 bit architecture)
    Server installations:
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/to_toc?pathname=install.102%2Fb14316%2Ftoc.htm&remark=portal+%28Books%29
    Client installations:
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/to_toc?pathname=install.102%2Fb14312%2Ftoc.htm&remark=portal+%28Books%29
    You can find the required books (if not using 32 bit architecture) from

  • AIX 64-Bit Instant Client

    Why does the instant client download only include libclntsh.a and libocci.a for the Client Code Library and the OCCI Library respectively? Where are the .so dynanimc link libraries with the instant client? I see those with the full Oracle install in the $ORACLE_HOME/lib directory on AIX 64-Bit.
    Does that mean that to build instant client compatible apps, I can only statically link libclntsh.a and libocci.a? I'm a little confused since the documentation suggests otherwise.

    That one is easy, and I will explain it in a second.
    What really is mysterious is that "polittba" gets an error on "ar -t libclntsh.a", but that may be due to a corrupted file...
    For what it is worth, libclntsh.a from 10.2.0.4 yields the following checksum:
    $ cksum libclntsh.a
    1526887592 24719097 libclntsh.a
    To your problem: The error message is misleading. "ldd" can find libc.a fine, the "Cannot find" is an incomplete error message for a different library that "ldd" cannot find.
    Very annoying, and I would say that this is a bug in AIX' implementation of "ldd".
    The "Cannot find" is actually because it cannot find libclntsh.a
    See for yourself: if you set LIBPATH correctly to point to your instant client directory, you get:
    $ LIBPATH=/wherever/instantclient_10_2 ldd libociei.so
    libociei.so needs:
    /wherever/instantclient_10_2/libclntsh.a(shr.o)
    /usr/lib/libc.a(shr_64.o)
    /usr/lib/libpthreads.a(shr_xpg5_64.o)
    /usr/lib/libdl.a(shr_64.o)
    /usr/lib/libodm.a(shr_64.o)
    /usr/lib/libperfstat.a(shr_64.o)
    /unix
    /usr/lib/libcrypt.a(shr_64.o)
    /usr/lib/libcfg.a(shr_64.o)
    /usr/lib/liblvm.a(shr_64.o)
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe
    PS: I just notice that Instant Client 10.2.0.4 for AIX ships with both libclntsh.a and libclntsh.so.
    That is a bit confusing because - as I said some postings above - the former is a shared library.
    But then what is libclntsh.so?
    "file" will tell you it is a shared object.
    Now look:
    $ ar -t libclntsh.a
    shr.o
    Ah, this shared library contains exactly one shared object. Let's extract it:
    $ ar -x libclntsh.a shr.o
    Now compare shr.o and libclntsh.so:
    $ ls -l shr.o libclntsh.so
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 laurenz staff 24140392 May 10 20:36 libclntsh.so
    -rwxrwxr-x 1 laurenz staff 24140392 Oct 24 08:59 shr.o
    $ cksum shr.o libclntsh.so
    1406909702 24140392 shr.o
    1406909702 24140392 libclntsh.so
    They are the same!
    So Oracle ships the same thing twice: once as shared library AIX style (*.a) and once as shared object.
    I assume that this is to cater to those people who come from other UNIXen and look for *.so as a shared library.
    Or ported tools that do the same.
    You can use both the shared library *.a and the shared object *.so for dynamic linking.
    The linker "ld" will search for both if you pass "-lclntsh" and will take the first one it finds.
    If both are in the same directory, "ld" will use the *.a library, but you can change that preference with the "-brtl" flag.
    Sorry for the long rant that probably is not interesting to most, but I feel that there is much misunderstanding of shared libraries on AIX amoung people who come from - say - Linux.
    And one more attempt to clear that up can't hurt.

  • 64-bit Instant Client for Oracle 9i

    Based on what I've read here, it looks like there are no Instant Clients for prior to 10.1.
    - Is this correct?
    - Does a 10.1 Instant Client work for accessing 9i databases?
    Thanks

    Yes, and yes. Except that the database should be 9.2, as connections to 9.0 are desupported.

  • How to configure for remote JMS client?

    I have my own Java JMS test program for performance measurements.
              I am using the JNDI and JMS provider functionality of the WebLogic 9.1 app-server but my test program is just pure JMS 1.02 sender/receiver clients - ie it is NOT part of, or deployed as a J2EE application.
              SINGLE MACHINE TEST
              ===================
              In a single machine environment I was able to
              - configure a JMSServer
              - configure a JMSSystemModule
              - configure resources for ConnectionFactories and Queue and Topics
              I then made what I believe to be a 'standalone' application module copied from some mysystemmodule-jms.xml and with that I somehow worked out how to deploy it using the weblogic.Deployer tool.
              The deployment apparently set up the JNDI and my JMS client could gain access to the administered objects and do what it does.
              Everything works.
              TWO MACHINE TEST
              ================
              I now have a second machine.
              I want to put my JMS sender client on this new machine and I want the JMS server and JMS receiver client to be unchanged from the SINGLE MACHINE TEST.
              But I really don't know quite how to proceed from here...
              Do I need to install the WebLogic app-server on the sender machine or is the weblogic.jar all I need?
              What is necessary configuration for JNDI access on the sender machine?
              Can I in fact use my original SINGLE MACHINE server unchanged as I am hoping?
              I don't think I want a "thin" client because I read that performance is impacted (and these are performance tests)
              Remember this is NOT a J2EE application. There is no MDB; no client-container; no descriptors etc. Maybe that makes it more complicated - I don't know.
              Sorry for such basic questions but if somebody can just point me to an appropriate example or tutorial it could save me days...
              Thankyou.

    Hi,
              My problem is on similar lines. I have an applet based UI working on RMI/t3 protocol.
              I am using weblogic 9.2 as my app server.
              When my applet is executed on JRE 1.5x it works fine.
              But when I use JRE1.4x it gives the following exception
              java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/management/InvalidAttributeValueException
              at weblogic.rmi.internal.Stub.<clinit>(Stub.java:21)

              at weblogic.rmi.internal.StubInfo.<clinit>(StubInfo.java:34)
              at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method)
              I have analyzed the reason for this.
              the class javax/management/InvalidAttributeValueException was included in java 1.5 and above. So JRE 1.4 does not have it.
              In previous versions of weblogic this class was a part of their 'weblogic.jar' file and in weblogic 9.2 it is not a part of weblogic.jar file so when I am using JRE1.4 and weblogic 9.2 then it obviously does not find this class hence the above exception.
              I tried to put this all together and made custom made client jar file incliding the necessary classes. I was able to get throght this exception only land up in following exception.
              java.lang.VerifyError: class weblogic.utils.classloaders.GenericClassLoader overrides final method .

  • How to configure ONS on JDBC client?

    I have configured JDBC client through OracleDataSource to enable implicit cache, fast connection failover and ONS like:
    OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
    ods.setURL( theURL );
    ods.setUser( theUser );
    ods.setPassword( thePassword );
    ods.setConnectionCacheName("foo");
    ods.setConnectionCachingEnabled(true);
    ods.setFastConnectionFailoverEnabled(true);
    ods.setONSConfiguration("nodes=server1.com:6350,server2.com:6350";
    // set connection cache properties
    ods.setConnectionCacheProperties(cacheProps);
    The connection cache works, but following document says:
    "Oracle Notification Service (ONS) is configured and available on the node where JDBC is running. JDBC depends on ONS to propagate database events and notify JDBC of them."
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B13789_01/java.101/b10979/fastconnfail.htm
    I'm a bit confused. The machine that runs JDBC client, i.e. Java app server, doesn't have oracle db or oracle client installed, and no ORACLE_HOME. Does this indicate the machine that has JDBC client needs to install Oracle client or copy the whole ORACLE_HOME package?
    Thanks in advance!

    As a side note, I made an interesting discovery last week: the SNMP Service is deprecated in Windows Server 2012. Why would you want to use SNMP on an actual Windows OS though? There are far better ways available to monitor Windows. I'm sure that lines
    up with why they deprecated it.

  • 11g Instant Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20 vs Full Client 2.111.6.0

    My .NET app was developed on a computer where 11g Instant Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20 was installed. I copied the application code to another computer where the 11g Full Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.0 was installed. When I tried to run it I get the following error:
    An unhandled exception of type 'System.TypeIntializationException' occured in System.dll
    The type initializer for 'Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection' threw and exception
    My .NET app requires the use of sqlldr which does not come with 11g Instant Client so I'm trying to get it to run on another computer with the 11g Full Client which includes sqlldr.
    The appilcation was built referencing the Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20 on the computer with 11g Instant Client but the app needs to run on a computer where sqlldr is installed which is on another computer with 11g Full Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.0.
    Am I going to have to install the 11g Full Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.0 on the development computer to get the app to work or what?

    Thanks Mark
    The 2.111.6.20 version is already on our production server so I can't replace it. The app that uses sqllder ony runs two weeks out of a year so I'm thinking that I can set up another dev computer(dev2) with the full client and run the app from there. I may try installing both clients but I'm not sure how that will work out yet. I'm still looking into deploying 2.111.6.20 from dev to dev2 like the option 1 you suggested but coping the file from the GAC of dev to dev2 is more involved than I expected. I'm also trying to get the development tools VS2008 installed on dev2 to try option 2 as you suggested.
    Configuration
    dev 11g Instant Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20
    prod 11g Instant Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20
    dev2 11g Full Client Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.0

  • Instant Client for Win32 and ODBC Application

    Hi.
    I just want to know how will Instant Client handle an ODBC Data Source in Windows 9X/2000/XP.
    Will it be a new ODBC Driver?, Can developers like me ship that "driver" with the application so that the end user could just open the application and use it without any other installation?.
    How many disk space will Instant Client need?, do we need to set up the Instant Client to connect to the source, as we need to do with the current client software, or will it be enough to set the Connection String?
    Thank for your help, I am developping a little application for my company that need to access an Oracle Database and need to be installed for many users on Windows XP Desktop Machines.

    I noticed your reply to this topic and I am
    having the same problem with OLE DB or ODBC.
    I posted the following on another message and
    nobody has answered. There are also no examples
    in the Oracle web site on how to connect to a
    remote client using ADO. Any help will be
    appreciated, Tony.
    I am trying to create an installation package
    from Visual Basic (version 6.0) that will let
    me connect to a remote Oracle database. Does
    anyone know what needs to be installed on the
    client machine? I created a standard package
    and it does not work on the client.
    My connection string is as follows:
    Dim adoCn As New ADODB.Connection
    adoCn.Provider = "OraOLEDB.Oracle"
    adoCn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=PSYTEST" _
    & ";User ID=SYSTEM" _
    & ";Password=Ciao" _
    & ";PLSQLRSet=1;" _
    & ";Remote Server=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
    adoCn.Open
    The xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the
    server. The program works when I use it on
    the local machine, but it does not work when
    I create an installation package and I install
    it on a remote client machine.

  • Windows 7, Oracle DB, Instant Client and VBScript

    I'm trying to to connect to a Oracle database via vbs on a Windows 7 machine using the instant client.  I get an error [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]Ora-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error Code 80004005.  Script still works fine in XP using the Microsoft ODBC for oracle.  I've setup the system dsn, and added tns_admin option to the system environmental path.  Here's the connection line
    psconn.Open "DRIVER={Oracle in instantclient_11_2};SERVERNAME=192.168.50.1:1521/PSPRODDB;User Id=user;Password=pass;"
    I've tried 32 bit instant client and the 64 bit and get the same messages with both.  Any suggestions?

    12560 means you didnt supply a tnsnames alias, and a database was not found in that home.
    Try this:
       "DRIVER={Oracle in instantclient_11_2};DBQ=192.168.50.1:1521/PSPRODDB;uid=user;pwd=pass;"
    Using Oracle ODBC Driver
    Hope it helps,

    I am trying to use PHP on Debian box using Oracle 10gR2 on a RH 4 server. Everything works fine individually, but I cannot get PHP4 to use InstantClient to connect to the Oracle Server. This is what I've done:
    Oracle 10gR2 works fine on the RH 4 server. Listener is running and all required OS security is in place and works (TCP_wrappers, etc.).
    Client machine runs Debian 3.1 (Sarge). It works fine and SSH connectivity to RH4 server works.
    Instant Client 10gR2 installed on Debian client and works fine. Tested SQL*Plus connection to the RH server. I installed Instant Client from the zip file.
    I did have to add libclntsh.so to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig to get Debian to use it, though.
    Apache2.0.54-5 on Debian client works fine. Web pages on it can be opened in browsers from other machines.
    Installed PHP4.3.10-16 on Debian client using following:
    ./configure --with-oci8-instant-client=<dir of my choice>
    --enable-sigchild
    I first checked ./configure help and the option with-oci8-instant-client was there.
    Configure went well. Log showed checking for Instant Client files.
    Ran make. Saw numerous Instant Client message as words scrolled.
    Ran make install. Successful.
    Restarted Apache2 with following env variables:
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<my Instant Client directory)
    TNS_ADMIN=<same directory where I put my sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files).
    SQLPATH=<same directory>
    I know this is correct because Instant Client SQL*Plus can connect.
    Browsers on other machines can view simple php scripts run from the Debian box.
    BUT, phpinfo does NOT show an OCI8 section.
    phpinfo does show the correct extension directory, though.
    Somehow, my PHP4 configure and make is not using the --with-oci8-instant-client option.
    I checked $PHP4HOME/ext/oci8/config.m4 file and the verbiage IS in there to use the --with-oci8-instant-client option, either with the default location or the extension_dir location.
    I tried using the new ZendCore product, even though it is not certified for Debian. It installed okay but I could not get PHP5 to work. I uninstalled it successfully and redid all of the above.
    So, any ideas as to what else I can do here? Other than not use Debian (which is probably the wisest thing to do). And I suppose I could install a thick Oracle client, assuming that Debian would take it. But I prefer the Instant Client.
    I tried the PHP ./configure syntax I've seen several places on this forum.
    ./configure --with-oci8=instantclient,<directory>
    This syntax may work on Red Hat machines but it throws a syntax error on Debian and aborts the configure.
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks, but that did not work. Configure aborts because it cannot find the required OCI8 libraries. The --with-oci8 option is for the Oracle "thick" client.  I have only the Instant Client...and am not interested in loading the older client.
    I may have my own solution next week, though. I will be loading RH4 on a new server and will then install ZendCore and forget all about using Oracle with Debian.
    Update on trying ZendCore on Debian Sarge:
    I tried installing it again yesterday. The install seemed go to well, and said it was successful.
    It did NOT load PHP5, however. Nor did it load the Instant Client. My previously installed PHP4 and Instant Client remained in my original directories.

  • Instant Client 10.1.0.5 and ORA-12640 with External Authentication

    I am using v10.1.0.5 of Instant Client on Windows 32bit. I have hit bug 5114330 (ANO: ORA-12640 authentication adapter initialization fails if Operating System User does not have admin rights). This was fixed in patch 12 of 10.1.0.5. I copied the updated files from patch 28 that related to the instant client files and I am still hitting the same problem. How do I patch my instant client install to overcome this bug? Using v10.2 of instant client is not an option as it is not compatible with our application.
    Kind regards,
    Steve

    I guess that if you know what you are doing, that approach should work fine; the "standard procedures" are there to guide people who have little experience and to provide a cookbook for how to do it.
    I am not sure about version 10.1, but in Instant Client 10.2 everything except for the Instant Client shared library (in 10.1 that is oraociei10.dll) is the same as the regular client. The Instant Client shared library contains messages and similar, so probably has no influence on a code bug as you experience it.
    What I would do in your case is to install the regular client on a test machine, apply the patch there and see if the problem is fixed there.
    If not, you have a better case for Oracle support, because they understand the regular client much better.
    If it works there, replace the Instant Client shared libraries with the files from the regular client and see if it works.
    In the case that the error persists, I guess there's no way around a Service Request, because nobody except for Oracle can look into the code.
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe

    Please grab the "re-factored" oci8 code from http://pecl.php.net/package/oci8. The version of oci8 distributed with PHP 4 should be avoided. Replace the PHP 4.4 ext/oci8 directory completely with the new package, run buildconf --force and then configure/make etc.  Note the configure option for instant client has changed:
    --with-oci8=instantclient,/usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.3/client/lib
    -- cj
