OCR Disk - change from external to normal redundancy

Hey, I am using grid 11.2.0.3
I have one +OCR Disk in ASM configured. unfortunately with external redundancy.
I have two storages - each storage is representing 2 disks á 500 MB
But I think that my cluster will break down, in a case of a storage failure. Is that right ?
Can I switch to normal redundancy ? If not, how to modify the configuration.
I could create two new disks, and could create a new diskgroup for OCR. But how to switch ?
Is it the ocrconfig replace command ? Or with a backup ?
ocrcheck
Status of Oracle Cluster Registry is as follows :

  • After SN install can't launch Disk Utility from external drive

I recently upgraded 10.5.9 to SN on my white Macbook. First I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive onto the replacement drive in an external enclosure. Then I swapped drives so that the new drive is now the internal drive and the old drive is in the enclosure. I then upgraded the OS on the internal drive via SN installer on DVD.
Now when I start from the external drive in OS X 10.5.9 and try to launch Disk Utility from this drive I get a weird error message that "Disk Utility can't be launched because it's incompatible with this architecture." The only things I can think of is that Snow Leopard installs something that globally effects all perhipherals (like new disk drivers?), or that there is something in the enclosure's USB bridge which is causing this, or that installing Snow Leopard breaks the PRAM for older versions of OS X. Tech support for the enclosure vendor tells me there is nothing in the enclosure's USB that would cause this. Any insights into what's happening appreciated.

Thanks for response. Ah, that's it. I was trying to launch it from the applications folder I had dragged to the dock, which was done while running Snow Leopard. That's why (duh!) all the application icons were slashed out. : |

  • Extremely Slow Disk Access from External Drives (USB & Firewire)

Following the upgrade to 10.6.2 (from 10.6.1), my computer is communicating extremely slowly with all external drives (both Firewire 400 and USB). File transfers which used to take less than a minute now take 5-10 minutes (less than 1 GB). Peering into the Console, I see messages for each aspect of a file reading: Nov 13 12:30:12 Nautilus /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[152]: Possible unresolved transaction race -105/filename
(Nautilus is the name of the computer)
By "each aspect", I mean that for Pages files, it provides a message for Quicklook,(null) , Contents,(null) , and filename,(null).
All disks are in good health, formatted as FAT32 for ease of use with all OS types, and are SATA.
Again, this occurred immediately following the installation of 10.6.2 (both Software Update and Combo). I've seen similar errors online with iTunes libraries on network drives, but this is on directly connected drives.
I normally wouldn't ask this, but, is there a way to reinstall 10.6.1 over .2? At this point, Time Machine would likely cause me to lose other data as well in a full revert, since it has been more than a few days.

I have various personal files backed up on these drives (not system data): music, pictures, documents, etc.
FAT32 should not be an issue, as I have used these drives for over 2 years with Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard with nay an issue, until now. Additionally, while the Time Machine backup may be an archive, it is the sole occupier of an HFS-formatted partition which is not exhibiting the issue. I only included that information since it is physically on the same drive as a partition (FAT32) which is being troublesome to rule out driver/hardware problems.
Bottom line: All of my drives worked perfectly on 10.6.1 (and continue to do so on my other Macs (10.5.8), but do not on 10.6.2. I was only looking for a potential solution to my computer's specific issue, not a statement that my "compromise" is the cause of my problems.
Actually, since Apple fully supports read/write access on FAT32 partitions, I should, indeed, be able to "have all things all ways...", no offense intended.

  • Disk Utility from external drive?

Our mac mini has a corrupted disk and needs Disk Repair, but the DVD drive is also broken.  Can I boot from an external DVD drive?

Have you tried booting to the recovery partition, by holding the command and r keys down while booting (or the alt/option key)? That should bring up a short menu, allowing you to run Disk Utility to do the repair.

  • Cannot remove Disk Icons from Disk Images or External Drives from Desktop

After years with PPCs, I just upgraded to an Intel Mac. I am now running into a funny problem. The majority of the time (although occasionally it works as it should), I am unable to eject disks. These include disk images from my internal hard drive, external hard drives, and disk images from external hard drives.
I do not get the “Cannot eject this disk because it is in use” error that happens when something is trying to access a file on the disk; instead, nothing happens. I’ve tried ejecting by dragging the icon to the dock, hitting the eject icon in finder, right-clicking and ejecting from there, and even using a terminal-based script that I found on the WEB. None of these do anything- no errors, but the icon hangs about as if nothing happened.
Occasionally I cannot log off at all (I just get the SBBOD); here I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I can log off properly. Either way, all seems to be fine when I log back in.
    I’ve run Applejack multiple times.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you.

  • Modify PO from external system

    Hi all,
We are implementing SRM 5.0 with extended classi scenario.
Until now we have a R3 system where we create PO, but we also have got a functionality for modifing particular information of PO in a lagacy system, that comunicate with R3 between idoc.
Now we migrate the lifecycle of PO in SRM, but the legacy system remains.
Wich is the best way for modify a PO from a legacy system in SRM?
    thanks

    Hi,
You can try multiple methods ( mostly non-standard), one is use the SRM function modules to update PO, when you send the data from external system, other method is PO response( send the changes from external system as PO response in SRM).
Hope above methods will resolve your issue.

  • Disk Group from normal to external in a RAC environment

    Hello,
my environment is based on 11.2.0.3.7 RAC SE with two nodes.
Currently I have 4 DG, all in NORMAL redundancy, to contain respectively:
    ARCH
    REDO
    DATA
    VOTING
At the moment I focus only with non-VOTING DG.
Each of them has 2 failure groups that physically maps to disks in 2 different server rooms.
The storage arrays are EMC VNX (one in each server room).
They will be substituted by a VPLEX system that will be configured as a single storage entity with DGs in external redundancy.
    I see from document id
How To Move The Database To Different Diskgroup (Change Diskgroup Redundancy) (Doc ID 438580.1)
that it is not possbile to do this online apparently.
    Can you confirm?
I also read the thread in this forum:
    https://community.oracle.com/message/10173887#10173887
that seems to confirm this too.
I have some pressure to free the old storage arrays, but in short time I will not be able to stop the RAC RDBMSs I have in place.
So the question is: can I proceed into two steps so that
    1) add a third failure group composed by the VPLEX disks
    2) wait for data sync of the third failure group
    3) drop one of the two old failure groups (ASM should be let me make this, correct?)
    3) brutally remove all disks of the remaining old storage failure group
and proceed in reduced redundancy for some time until I can afford the maintenance window
Inside the ASM administrator guide I see this:
Normal redundancy disk group - It is best to have enough free space in your disk
group to tolerate the loss of all disks in one failure group. The amount of free
space should be equivalent to the size of the largest failure group.
    and also
    Normal redundancy
Oracle ASM provides two-way mirroring by default, which means that all files are
mirrored so that there are two copies of every extent. A loss of one Oracle ASM
disk is tolerated. You can optionally choose three-way or unprotected mirroring.
    spare

When you are creating external table you must specify location that external table will use to manipulate with external data.
This is done with LOCATION and/or DEFAULT_DIRECTORY parameter.
If you want that every instance in your cluster is able to use one specific external table, then you would need to have the location specified in the create external table command visible/accessible to all servers in your cluster, propably by some specific shared os disks/storage configuration; e.g. mounting remote disks, and this could very easy cause slower ext. table performance than it would be when the specified location is on the db server.
This will be the one and only way because it is impossible to specify remote location, either when creating directory or in any specification parameters when creating external table.

  • Best Practice???  Change from internal boot disk to external disk

I have a mini running 10.5.6 server and it currently boots off it's internal disk. I was hoping to get some feedback/input from others on a good process to convert the system from it's internal boot disk to an external boot disk (firewire).
I wanted minimum downtime during the conversion and I of course, want a complete snapshot on the new boot disk. Lastly, I do not have a local keyboard and console on the system although I could connect one if it seemed to be much easier that way.
In general, I am thinking of the following:
    1) Boot into the Leopard Server CD.
    2) Use diskutility to Restore from the internal boot disk to the new external boot disk.
    3) Choose the new boot disk as the startup disk.
    4) Reboot onto new disk.
Is diskutility the best bet?? Meaning will it work this way if the drives are different sizes??
Should I try to clone the disk from the internal boot disk (assuming I shutoff services first) using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner?? But I believe they do not copy over all logfiles, etc..
Or does anyone have a quick overview of a methodology which they have done in the past or just are suggesting might be a better process than the ones I described??
    In Summary:
    1) From the CD, clone using diskutil and change boot disk
    2) From the running OS, clone using SuperDuper or CCC and than reboot onto new disk
    3) Something else??
    Thank you in advance.

For cloning the machine you have the approach fine. Disk Utility is fine and booting from the CD is the best method. Simply use the restore method.
But why on earth would you want to boot from an external Firewire drive? First, there is the issue of speed. You have a mini, let's assume it is a one generation back Intel. It has an internal SATA drive on a 1.5 Gbps connection. You want to move that to a 400 Mbps Firewire bus? Next, beyond the speed issues, you have a persistence issue. You are taking the boot volume and moving into to a transitory bus. One of Firewire's greatest strengths is easy connection/disconnection. Persistence is not a strong point.
Next, if your plan is to move the boot volume to some form of a Firewire RAID, then you are even penalizing yourself more. The mini has one FireWire port. If you are using two devices and creating a mirror RAID, then you need to daisy chain. Talk about points of failure, asynchronous startup time, bus blocking, etc. Not wise.
Plus, I can not count how many external firewire devices have burnt up in the effort to have small footprints. Lacie and the "let's put a drive in a metal case with no fan" approach = melted drive. Western Digital and Lacie with the "let's make a completely un-reusable external power brick that either breaks in a small breeze or falls out when the heavy guy walks by the server" approach.
If you are looking at a Firewire RAID enclosure, then you are missing the objective of speed as you are limited by the 400 bus. It is nice to say that you have a four drive SATA 2 RAID case running a RAID 5, but you are defeating the purpose of why you bought the raid. The RAID 5 can provide an exponential increase in I/O performance. But that goes out the window because of the slow bus.
If your argument is that "this is a server and my bottleneck is Ethernet," that too does not hold up. You are likely running on a gigabyte network.
For system details check out http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/Macmini_0602 /Articles/architecture.html.
Take this with a grain of salt. You caught me on a grumpy day as yesterday I dealt with a melted external firewire drive.
My advice is buy real server class hardware. What is you objective? Drive redundancy? Capacity? A mini is a great dev server. Not a production server. This is your data. Presumably the data that makes your business function. Don't trust it to a single platter. And don't trust it to a consumer level, disposable system. I am not trying to malign the mini. It is a fine machine for its role. Its role however is not to be a production file server. Now as a web server, we are talking a different situation.
Ok, I am rambling. Hope this helps in some way.

  • Change from case-sensitive disk format to the normal Mac OS Extended.

    Hi,
I need to change from a case-sensitive disk format to the normal Mac OS Extended Journaled version.
I have no external HD fitted, but I do have some DVD-Rs. I need to restore the data from 2 users, including iTunes and iPhoto files.
What's the best way to achieve this?
    Many thanks,
    Tris.

I just got off of the phone with Adobe support. They told me they knew the solution, but that they would not tell me tonight. I had to call back between 6:00 am and 5:00 PM tomorrow. That does not work with my schedule. So I googled some stuff and found that Adobe CS 3 is not supported with Case-Sensitive file systems. So OK, let me install this to my other MAC that has a non case sensitive drive. Same error. Even though I have a non case-sensitive drive, the OS is on a Case-Sensitive Drive and I am never prompted where to install like most all other Mac Software.
I have always formatted case-sensitive. So I am thinking to myself why not start using a non case-sensitive drive. Well, to start off I want it case sensitive. I enjoy web programming and like this feature. Sure it is not needed, but I am glad Apple offered me a choice. And I am sure there are many other reasons why to use it. Also I would be interested in knowing why non case-sensitive drives are supperior.
Why is this a requirement now? I have used Adobe software in the past without this specific issue. I also have Large TB drives and do not know how to 'safely' do this. You will not catch me jumping through this hoop. I will not risk the change to the file system. And I can not be expected to format my drive. I just wonder what Adobe would say tomorrow if I called.
The Direct line I was given by adobe is 800-642-3623 for support on this issue. You don't need anything else but to call this number and ask. You can not get through after hours though.
Wow, I just can't believe this and the lack of interest Adobe had with me.
I hope I can get a refund on the software. Until I am able to downgrade my file system format, I do not want to sit on Adobe's bill. I will buy it again assuming I learn I can't do without PS CS3.

  • Moving from external redundancy to nfs storage

Hey, I am running GI 11.2.0.3 on SLES11.
    Currently my votingfiles are on one asm diskgroup called +OCR configured with external redundancy;
While doing some failure tests it showed up, that the shared storage is not available for more than 40 seconds.
Therefore clusterware stack is going down, due to no accessible votingfiles.
Hence, I have to move my votingfiles.
I created 3 virtual machines on 3 esx plattforms.
Each vm is presenting one votingfile via nfg as described in: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/grid-infra-thirdvoteonnfs-131158.pdf
So, which steps needs to be performed to switch from by diskdgroup +OCR to a new configuration with 3 votingfiles on 3 servers ?
Or can I stay with this diskgroup and added those 3 votingsfiles as quorum files ? That would be the easy.... But is it possible ?

    Hi Chris,
I do not understand what you are trying to do.
You have a poor configuration placing voting disk on localdisk of each host. Correct if I'm wrong. This is what I understood. If this is true this configuration is not valid either for testing or educational environment.
All files of Clusterware must be in a shared location out of host member of cluster. As a workaround you can create another NFS server (i.e New VM) that is not a member of the cluster for this purpose.
    About Quorum:
To use a quorum failgroup is required only if you are using RAC Extended or if you are using more than 1 Storage in your cluster. Quorum ASMDISK is an inexpensive solution to solve problems of split-brain that apply on environment where it's possible e.g Extended RAC or if your cluster have even number of Storages (i.e 2,4 and so on).
If you are trying just move voting disk from diskgroup with external redundancy to diskgroup with normal redundancy. This step is easy.
Move Voting Disk to a temporary Diskgroup can be a existing Diskgroup or you can create a temporary diskgroup to hold it.
So recreate your diskgroup with normal redundancy and move back your votedisk to this new diskgroup.
Also you have a option of use only NFS to store votedisk. You don't need ASM (I don't recommend this for production environment).
    You can read it:

  • Only ONE voting disk created on EXTERNAL redundancy

    Hi All,
I am wondering why, when configuring 5 LUNs, then creating one DG with these 5 LUNS...
then creating OCR/Vote disk , GRID installer only creates one voting disk?
Of course, I can always create another voting disk in a separate DG...
    any ideas>?
of course, when I try " ocrconfig -add +OCR_DG" i get a message that says OCR is already configured....
    thanks

    Hi JCGO,
you are mixing up voting disks and OCR.
Voting disks are placed on the disk header of an ASM diskgroup. The number of voting disks is based on the redundancy of the diskgroup:
    External (no mirroring) = 1; Normal = 3; High redundancy (triple mirroring) = 5;
The OCR however is saved as a normal file (like any datafile of a tablespace) inside ASM and therefore "inherits" the redundancy of the diskgroup.
So while you only see 1 file, the blocks of the file are mirrored correspondingly (either double or triple (High)).
Voting disks can only reside in one diskgroup. You cannot create another voting disk in a separate DG. And the command to add voting disks ist:
crsctl add votediskHowever this won't work when on ASM, you can only replace them into another DG:
crsctl replace votedisk +DGThe OCR on the other side, since a normal file, allows additional OCRs to be created in different diskgroups.
Since it is the heart of the cluster (and also containing backups of the voting disks) it does make sense to "logically" mirror it additionally (even if it already is based on the mirroring of the DG). Since if the DG cannot be mounted maybe another one containing actual OCR can. This is a little better than using the OCR backup (which can be up to to 4 hours old).
Hence in my cluster installation I always put the OCR in every diskgroup I have (up to a number of 5).
And since my clusters normally have 3 diskgroups (1 OCRVOT, 1 DATA and 1 FRA), I end up with 3.
Having an uneven number of OCR is a little superior over having an even number (so 3 or 5 vs. 2 or 4). I skip the explanation to why.
    Regards
    Sebastian

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Photos from external hard disk to another

Is there a way to move photos straight from one external hard disk to another external hard disk?
Because MacBook Pro´s hard disk is too small (120 Gb) for my photos, I must use those external disks. The idea is that the original photos are in an external disk and in addition there are a couple of other disks as the vaults.

It's easy to see why all of this is confusing because of the poor human interface design of the "library location" feature of Aperture.
First, when you change your library location, you actually have to quit and restart the app. What a concept--I wonder why the orginal Mac team didn't think of this approach when you wanted to change the document you were working on in MacWrite? Instead of "Open" from the File menu, you could do it in "Preferences" and with a relaunch...
Secondly, if you point to a library on an external drive, and forget to mount that drive before launching, rather than telling you it can't find the library and asking what to do, it arbitrarily (and silently) decides to create a brand new library in your "Pictures" folder. Yuck.
