OCR, VOTING and SPFILE in one LUN

DB version : 11g Release 2
Platform : Solaris 10
I understand it is not recommended in production. But for a test setup, is it technically possible to have OCR, Voting disk and spfile in one LUN (all these in one ASM disk group) ?

Now i am reorganising SAN by scrapping the entire SAN and cretaing new LUN's (It's a must)
    so pleae let me know
    1) how do i take backup of OCR and Voting Disk from existing SAN and how do i restore it in new LUN's after SAN reorganisation

  • How to determine raw disks configured for OCR/voting disk, ASM spfile

I have a two-node Oracle 10gR2 RAC configuration using raw disks. Basically, raw disks are used for CRS's OCR/voting disks, ASM's ASM spfile and disk groups.
Is there a better way to figure out what raw disks are configured in Oracle using methods other than those shown below:
    - To find out votedisk:
    # crsctl query css votedisk
    0. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote1
    1. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote2
    2. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote3
    - To find out OCR:
    # ocrcheck
Status of Oracle Cluster Registry is as follows :
    Version : 2
    Total space (kbytes) : 525836
    Used space (kbytes) : 3856
    Available space (kbytes) : 521980
    ID : 1603037329
    Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file1
    Device/File integrity check succeeded
    Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file2
    Device/File integrity check succeeded
    Cluster registry integrity check succeeded
    - Is there a way to figure out what disk device is used for ASM spfile?
    - To find out raw disks configured for disk groups:
while connected to the ASM instance in sqlplus:
    SQL> select name,path from v$asm_disk where name like 'DG%';
    NAME
    PATH
    DG_DC_ASM_0000
    /dev/rhdiskpower13

  • Voting and ocr migration

    DB 11.1.0.7 HP Ux
We need to move the Voting/OCR which are on raw disk to new storage raw disks.
Currently we have Soft link fronm all the nodes pointing to the shared voting and ocr raw disks.
The current plan is to Shut CRS, and Backup the Voting and OCR disk to the new disks.(using dd command)
Change the soft link on all the nodes to the new disks, to which the current vote/ocr disk are backed up.
    Will this approach work ?

    Hi,
if you gave the softlink during installation time, and that is listed in
    # ocrcheck
    and
    # crsctl query css votedisks
then yes this will work. (Since DD was the suggested tool for backing up Votedisk in 11.1 anyway, and for OCR you can do the backup with dd as well, especially if clusterware is shut down).

  • Voting and OCR disk mirroring

    Hi all,
I my trying to create mirror of OCR and Voting disk in Oracle RAC 10gR2 on windows 2003.How to recoganize the location/path of raw file system to place my OCR/Voting disk.
    Thanks and Regard's
    Awanish Kumar

    Hi Awanish,
You can use diskpart utility to build new raw partitions.
To show location from your OCR search a key on Windows registry
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\Ocr]
To show location from Voting Disks use
    %CRS_HOME%\bin\crsctl query css votedisk
To mirror these important files use ocrconfig and crsctl utilities.

  • Lost permission/ownership on ocr&voting device after reboot

    Hi all
I have an issue on setting up a 10.2.0.3 crs+rac on OEL 5 64 bit.
    My configuration is as follows:
    - 2 node OEL 5 64 bit
    - storage on netapp (FCP)
    - 2 hba per node (qlogic driver qla2400)
    - dm-multipath
I was able to install and upgrade the crs stack up to 10.2.0.3, binding multipath devices to raw devices (as requested by OUI).
After install, I changed OCR and voting to point to block devices, using "multipathed" devices /dev/mapper/crs_voting1p1 anc /dev/mapper/crs_ocr1p1.
All worked fine, until I decided to reboot the node.
The issue is that I was not able to set ownership/permission on /dev/mapper/crs* devices on reboot (as expected, they become root:disk 660, and oracle:dba can't read/write on them).
I tried to setup udev to change these, as I used when dealing with raw and block devices, but with no success.
Could anyone give me some tip?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

    Hi
correct syntax for binding raw devices is:
    raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/mpath/mpath24.
I used the above syntax, binding raw to "mapper" devices.
Remember to create at least one partition and initialize it (with dd), and to assign correct permission/ownership on raw devices.
After the install phase, I changed bot voting and ocr device to point to block devices (/dev/mpath/....).
    Hope this helps.
    regards

  • OCR, Voting share problem.

    Hi all,
I trying to install an Oracle RAC on two Sun v240 (Solaris 10) with a Sun Storage 3510. But I dont know how to share the partitions for the OCR and Voting files that the RAC needs. The SE 3510 have 2 disk of 300 gb each one. Node1 sees those disks as c3t44d0 and c3t44d1 and node2 sees the same disks as c3t40d0 and c3t40d1.
I already set partitions 5 and 7 of c3t44d1 for OCR and voting with 1000mb each one, and could probe that for node2 sees the same for his disk c3t40d1. But now, how to share them?...
    Thanks

Im following the instructions on the Oracle Database
Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Real Application
Clusters Intallation Guide. The chapter 3 is where
the point is touched, but I didnt find something
about my question.ok, now i understand. it's probably more an system administration question than an oracle question. normally vxvm (veritas volume manager) is used on solaris.
    on one node:
prepare the disk device for vxvm with 'vdiskadd'. create a shared disk group with 'vxdg' (use option -s for shared). now create logical volumes for crs with 'vxassist'. deport the meta data about your created shared diskgroup with 'vxdg deport'.
    on all other nodes:
import the diskgroup with 'vxdg -s import' and activate it.
please refer to your vxvm documentation for details. maybe an sysadmin can lend you a hand.
after setting all up you can use /dev/vx/rdsk/<diskgroupname>/<lvname>
    hope it helps.

  • Why can i only select one LUN for repository creation from the list of LUNs

    1) have successfully created a server pool with heartbeat/cluster lun of 15GB storage
    2) Now trying to create repositories for VMs - Unable to select more then 1LUN per repository - we have a requirement of over 14TB and have 1TB per LUN does this mean we will require 14 repositories??? Please help
    Thanks in advance

right....It seems as though we will have to have 1TB LUNs per Repository, one question that comes to mind is that is it possible for a single VM to use more then one repository any ideas... ??
so for example if a VM needs to utilise remaining free space from a LUN is this possible or if a VM needs a bigger partition then 1TB can we use 2 x repositories to build this partition?? as we have max 1TB LUNs from storage.
Or will we have to request a amendment to the size of LUNs to increase to 2TB from storage? 2TB being max supported to a repository

  • More than 2 OCR files and 3 VOTE files

Is it possible to add more than 2 OCR files and more than 3 VOTE files in 2-node RAC ?

The Oracle Clusterware enables multiple voting disks but you must have an odd number of voting disks, such as three, five, and so on. If you define a single voting disk, then you should use external mirroring to provide redundancy.

  • Ocr/voting RAW Disk sequence number change

    Dear Gurus,
We are planning to upgrade IBM AIX 5.3 OS technology level upgrade ... and also we are changing the device driver from rdac to sddpcm .
If we do this activity these are the possible changes may occur.......
According to IBM there could be a possibility of RHDISK number , MAJOR and MINOR number changes LIKE /dev/rhdisk0 to /dev/rhdisk1 in this case
Whether this RHDISK number , MAJOR and MINOR number changes will cause any issues on Oracle RAC database particularly on OCR and VOTING disks........
for example currently our OCR LOCATION IS IN : Device/File Name : /dev/rhdisk23 this may change to /dev/rhdisk<25>
    Please help mee...
    Regards,
    Vamsi...

    Dear Gurus,
From OCR and VOTING point of view :
currently we have OCR LOCATION :
    /dev/rhdisk23------------->Might change to /dev/rhdisk29
currently we have VOTING LOCATION :
    /dev/rhdisk24-------------->Might change to /dev/rhdisk30
In this case how oracle will trace new OCR/VOTING raw disk path........How we have to make oracle to understand OCR/VOTING LOCATION is in “/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30”.....when cluster starts it will go and look in /dev/rhdisk23 for OCR and /dev/rhdisk24 for VOTING .Since it was not there it will fail .
Without OCR/VOTING disk CLUSTER will not start .....
    OCR/VOTING disks are safe in "/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30".......
Even if we take backup of OCR/VOTING disk .....no need to import it in "/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30".......because OCR/VOTING content was safe...only disk number changes........
    In this Scenario
What are the exact commands and steps we need to follow.........Please help me ...

  • Ocr & voting disk in 11g

Is it true that ocr and voting disks can be created on ASM in 11g? If yes, during RAC startup how would the crs which starts first be able to access ocr & voting disk on asm which comes up only after crs is up and running.
    Thanks

Grid Infrastructure - that is recommended to be installed in a different o/s user (e.g. grid). This owns the (integrated) CRS and ASM software stack. You will then install RAC/EE/SE as the default oracle o/s user. You can also install it in the same o/s user (using different homes). But separating that instead as different o/s users allows more flexibility in management and admin and security of these different s/w stacks.
CRS and ASM start "together" because of their interdependency.
With OCR and Voting disks on ASM, you will now find that you cannot simply stop ASM like in the past. ASM will thrown an exception saying that it has in-use diskgroups - despite all Oracle db instances using ASM being down. Thus ASM can only be shutdown in conjunction with CRS.. and successfully starting CRS also means that ASM is started. The acmcmd CLI interface has been improved, ACFS replaces the need for using something like OCFS (and managing that as a totally different s/w stack), etc.
ASM and its feature set are maturing very nicely IMO.

  • Ocr & voting disk lost

    Hi,
Learning about RAC..........please anyone reply it
If ocr & voting is lost means, is the database lost some datas? Is it correct?
For Ex: I had backup of OCR ,VOTING DISK which is taken at 3 Am.
Now 3.45 Am I lost current(running) ocr file ( mirror also) & voting disk.
    I lost 45 minutes data?

    Hi,
OCR Maintains cluster configuration information as well as configuration information about any cluster database within the cluster. OCR is the repository of configuration information for the cluster that manages information about like the cluster node list and instance-to-node mapping information.
VD primary function of the voting disk is to manage node membership and prevent what is known as Split Brain Syndrome in which two or more instances attempt to control the RAC database.
So looking into above functionality we can understand that the above are conf files and not actual data files. So you database does not lost.
Secondly, try to hold a replica copy of OCR/VD and make backups in time.

  • ISCSI MPIO with only one LUN

If I have a Server 2012 MPIO iSCSI connection to the storage server but I'm only connecting to one LUN will that provide any kind of increased performance or is the benefit just redundancy at that point?

    Hi,
    >>If I have a Server 2012 MPIO iSCSI connection to the storage server but I'm only connecting to one LUN
Multipath I/O (MPIO) is a feature that provides support for using multiple data paths to a storage device. Multipathing increases the availability of storage resources by providing path failover from a server or cluster to a storage subsystem.
Regarding MPIO, the following articles can be referred to for more information.
