OES2 Update confusion

In the past I've been mirroring the OES2-Updates-bundle and SLES10-SP1-Updates-bundle then applying those updates via the rug up command. I recently opened a ticket with Novell Support and the issue of patching came up. The engineer suggested I update using Novell's update server (via suse_register) and the command rug up -t patch.
Is there a difference between applying the monolithic patches and the Update bundles?
When I created the monolithic patch bundles (via zlmmirror) and tried rug up -t patch, no updates were applied even though rug lu showed several updates.
So confused,
Dan

Dan,
I know in oes 1 there was a difference using the patches and the monolithic bundle long long ago. We had some issues with that when we patched the server, opened some service requests and the problem was fixed. Since that time we use monolithic bundles to patches oes 1 and oes 2 server.
You need to know that when you mirror all the bundles from the novell update server you will get a bunch of patch bundles which are from type you-patch, whereas the monolithic bundle is from type package. Therefor the "rug up -t patch" will just check for assigned patch bundles to this server and therefor will not check the monolithic bundle. YOu can try to run "rug up -t package" or as I do, just use "rug up". The last one will check for all available updates in any of the assigned bundles.
Here is a bundle list from a oes 1 server where you can see the patch/package types:
Code:
# rug bl
S | Catalog | Name | Version | Type
--+------------------------+---------------------------------------------+---------+----------
i | Mandatory Bundles | OES1-20070327 | 4 | package
i | Mandatory Bundles | Recommended update for Novell iPrint server | 1 | you-patch
i | Mandatory Bundles | Recommended update for Novell NCP | 1 | you-patch
The OES1-20070327 is a monolithic bundle, the other are the pacthes and are from type you-patch.

Did this update make a physical change? Branching from that question, will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?

Did this update make a physical change?
    No
will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?
This will depend on whether they are savvy enough to open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on their Mac , click on the picture of the AirPort, and then click the Update button.
It that sounds too complicated, best to let someone else handle the update.

  • Windows Updates confusion

    I have a single SCCM 2012 SP1 CU4 server running on Windows 2012 Server.
I have read so many guides and forums (which have all been great), but I am confused on a few things regarding Windows Updates.
Let's say the hard drive dies on an employee's Windows 7 workstation.  I get a new hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro.  Inside of SCCM I have created Automatic Deployment Rules to push Windows Updates the day after patch Tuesday
(based on Niall's guide located here:
http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6799-using-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-part-9-deploying-monthly-updates/).  The "Date Released or Revised" is set to "Last 1 week."
    Does this mean:
The workstation getting the new hard drive will not get any updates that came out
before the most recent patch Tuesday?
Do I need to create a "Software Update Group" with all available
Windows 7 updates for situations like this?  If so, how do I get around the 1000 update limit?
Something else I am confused about with deploying monthly Windows updates via Automatic Deployment Rules...... Can I just "set it and forget it" so to speak?  Or do I need to
create a new folder every month to store that month's updates?  I read Gerry Hampson's guide to this (about 1/3 of the way down in the section titled:
    3. Updates Infrastructure and deploying updates)
    http://www.gerryhampsoncm.blogspot.ie/2013/04/sccm-2012-sp1-step-by-step-guide-part.html
Hope that makes sense.  Thank you in advance for any help!

Thanks for the quick replies.  I should note that we do have a base image that we use when setting up new workstations.  I was just using my "fresh Windows 7 Pro" as a worst-case scenario (in case other people were reading this thread with the
    same questions).
Here is how I have it setup now:
Created an "updates" folder on my SCCM server and shared it.  Created sub-folders (Win7, Win8, WinServer2008, etc...)
In SCCM console, went to Administration --> Sites --> Configure Site Components --> SUP

    Jason-
Thanks for clarifying that ADR's do not deploy updates.  What actually
does deploy the updates?  And how could I manually push updates for a newly imaged workstation if I needed to?
Also, would you all suggest that my Installation Deadline for servers be more like
    30 days?
Thanks again for all of the help.

  • Live Update confused about versions installed?

I have a MSI Neo4 Platinum and first I installed the Marvell LAN Drivers via Live Update (Version 7.14.1.3). This driver did however seem to be very unstable (the network connection dropped after a few minutes of use), so I went to Windows Update and picked the Marvell Driver there. It shows up under the Driver Tab as version 7.29.4.3". This driver seems very stable and my dropped connection problem is gone. I had this problem on two different installations of this board.
When I now run Live Driver, it incorrectly reports that my current version is 7.14.1.3 (not 7.29.4.3). It is obviously confused about shich version I'm running.
    Anyone else seen this problem?

    olavt,
Do not bother with Live Update. If you want to update anything, do it manually. Also for Mobo Drivers, usenVidia nForce Drivers

  • Have a Zen Micro (6GB) - Lost Software CD and Firmware update confuses me. Please he

I bought my Zen Micro about 7 months ago and have been using it fine until recently formatted my computer and realized I've lost my software cd (the one that comes with the player).
I tried downloading the Creative MediaSource Organizer/Player (version 3.30.2) and updating the firmware (thereby loosing all the songs I had saved in there. Ugh.) in my Zen Player and in the beginning MediaSource <i>still</i> wouldn't pick up my Creative Player. Then, I don't know why, it now works...but it works like a normal External HardDri've or a PenDi've would! It not longer has that menu thing (where there's a list of artist and albums) at the left side but simply folders under the Creative Player.
Does anyone know where I can get the old firmware and download the required software? I <i>greatly</i> prefer the way my player worked before I updated the firmware/software and I would like to just have that back even if it doesn't have as much features or whatever came with the upgrade. (iTunes or something. Has no idea what that is.)
Also, does Creative have a Service Center in Malaysia (specifically Kuala Lumpur) and can anyone tell me where it is or give me the phone number to call? I'm still under my warranty but this site doesn't list a number to call although they say they give Telephone Support until the warranty expires.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cherish
Edit: BTW, I <i>have</i> tried emailing Customer Support but so far, no reply, and that was...2 weeks ago, I think? And, like I said, the Customer Support section in this site doesn't list any numbers/Service Centers which is why I'm asking...Message Edited by cherish90 on 02-06-200705:25 PM
Edit the second: Does anyone know if the confirmation email that Creative is supposed to send to your account after you send them an email isn't working? Because I just double checked my inbox and I realized I never got any confirmation letter. And I'm <i>very</i> sure I didn't accidentally delete it.Message Edited by cherish90 on 02-06-200707:38 PM

LOL. I've sent in my player. FINALLY found the Service Center (for those in KL who want to know, it's in Berjaya Amoda, behind Low Yat and opposite Times Square) after asking the shop I bought the player from.
And the guy who I talked to called their HQ or whatever and said that neither of the messages I sent (I sent 2; one shortly after I started this thread) were recorded/received on their end although I DID get the "Your message has been sent" page after clicking on the 'submit' button. And yeah, I used this email too. *confused* Maybe Creative doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox (the browser I'm using)? I think that's kind of lame, though, because FireFox is like practically as big as EI now and it's more user-friendly (the tabs are uber cool IMHO). Unless Creative has some sort of problem with Mozilla...
    *cough*
    ANYWAY...
Yeah, I did download the PlayForSure plugin (although I have no idea what it's for) and MediaSource STILL picked up my Micro as something like a pendri've.
Never mind, though. The guy I talked to - never got his name... - said that once you've upgraded the firmware to the latest (which is the one that needs all these weird plugins and makes the device an MTP [I THINK that's what it's called] device) you can't change the firmware back to the old one unless they send it in. So I'm sending it in. And I think they'll replace the software CD for me too, so that's all good.
    Thanks anyway, Jason.

  • Re: Satellite Z30-A with Win 8.1 - Driver update confusion

    Hello,
I have a question regarding driver updates. Currently, Windows Update recommends me to update the audio driver (important) and the LAN driver (optional). Toshiba Service Station, however, doesnt offer new drivers for these devices.
My question is whether I should install these updates (particularly the important one) or if they are not approved by Toshiba yet?
Moreover, does anyone have a changelog for the new 3.8 Bios?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the quick replies! I was just tempted because one of the updates was classified as "important", for whatever reason, which are normally those updates that should be installed (e.g. for security reasons). In fact you are right, I dont have any problems with my laptop.
Sorry, forgot to state the model: Z30-A with Win 8.1
Any ideas about the bios update?
    Thanks!

  • 10.10.3 supplemental update confused About this Mac

After the supplemental update my mac book pro has incorrect information in About This Mac. The storage tab shows that I have 223.86GB free of 249.77GB. That is correct. The graphic shows the entire disk consumed by Backup(140.74TB yes TB). This is obviously incorrect. IStat menu also has incorrect disk usage information as well and is reporting 140.96TB free.

    I have 10.7.3
I am wanting to find out if I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update installed ?
Because I am unable to see it in the Installed Software section of Software Update.
I am also unable to install the Mac OS X 10.7.3Supp.dmg file.
I click on the file and it opens a dialog box saying it is Verifying.
It then opens up a window in the background.
    The window contains this icon:
When I Double Click the the icon, it comes up with the dialog window to install the update.
When I get to the step where I select where I want the file to be installed, this domes up:
    What does this mean ?
Do I already have the Update installed ?
How do I install the Update ?

  • Updates Confusion: Which ones to select for HP Notebook-15-r249tu

I regularly update my system, Windows is not an issue, however HP updates seem to be a problem. For example when I tried to update the graphic driver from Intel, it shows that my system has a customized driver and should be updates from the manufacturer site only. I have tried to get updates using the HP support assistant, but every time it shows "no updates". I then tried the HP website to get updated and it shows a list of related updates, but the problem is they all have the same/similar file name and description. I don’t have a clue as to which ones to download.  SO my questions are: 1) IF the HP support assistant does not show any updates then is it right or should I try other source? 2) Are the updates on HP website just a list of all necessary drivers and software or are they updates to already installed drives/software’s? 3) How to know which to download from the list? Find the list here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7486447/model/7748033

Depending on which wireless adapter is in your model, one of these should fix the problem.Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver -  sp68506.exe Qualcomm Atheros AR9000 Series Wireless LAN Drive - sp68427.exe If neither of those help and this is a result of converting the laptop to Windows 7 from Windows 8, then possibly the chipset drivers from THIS PAGE will be needed, also.

  • Update confusion

I currently have 7.0.8.2 installed. When I use its Check for updates and addons, it says none are available.
When I check the update site, the current software offered is 7.0.9.2.
So Nokia, is 7.0.9.2 not an update for 7.0.8.2, or is there a fault in the Check for updates routine, or what?
Should I install 7.0.9.2 or stay with the version I have, and what is the difference between them?

    Hi greyfox,
i dont have answers for all your queries. But yes, now Nokia PC Suite 7.0.9.2 is available for use. what are the changes/fixes they have done, i have no idea. You can download the latest pc suite from

  • IPod Mini "Restore and Update" Confusion

hey all... i recently bought an iPod Mini from a friend... anyways i've done the whole "restore and update" thing... but i'm stuck on the last step... where it says to hook up to an external power source or something? can't exactly remember the message it gave... but on my iPod Mini it keeps flashing a picture of an adapter being plugged into power outlets... am i supposed to have some kind of adapter? what's going on?
any help would be awesome... thx!

To complete the update process, connect the iPod to the AC adapter, a car adaptor, a 6-pin FireWire port on a computer, or try this method to charge the iPod. Until you've done one of these things, you can't use the iPod again.

  • Ipod 5G will not hold charge after 1.3 update

using itunes to update my 5th Gen Ipod to v1.3 last week, I am now unable to get the ipod to hold a charge.
when connecting normally, displays the message "please wait - very low battery"
and every so often it will attempt to reboot showing the apple icon (no backlight) but then goes back to the message again.
using the other suggestions to get to disk mode, itunes and Windows will recognize it, allowing it to sync.
When connected to wall adapter, it shows the fully charged symbol in the center of the screen.
Able to play songs/video only when connected to wall charger or car charger.
as soon as I disconnect it from a power source/usb, the battery indicator will quickly go down.
    -Win XP platform
-tried 2 alternate computers with good USB ports
-directly connnectd to USB (no hubs)
-tried the select-menu / play-menu combination (discussed in other topics)
-able to get ipod to sync with itunes only by going into disk mode
Former discussions indicate possible battery problem.
My concern is that it conveniently happened immediately after an update.
Therefore, leading me to think it has to do more with the update confusing the ipod's battery memory.

I had my iPod on my alarm clock today playing music and decided to try something different to get it to work..
I put it on hold before taking it off the dock. When I took it off, it showed a full charge. Skeptical, I turned it off and back on multiple times and still it showed a full charge! However, when I reset it using the middle & menu buttons, I saw the same low battery image and now I'm back to square one.
I know I'm probably going to have to buy a new battery, but I really don't think any of us should because this was obviously an error on Apple's part and if anything THEY should be the ones compensating for a new battery. I'm going to avoid buying a new one until I hear word from them about this because it's not right at all. For now, I'm going to have to stick to listening to it on its dock or with my car charger.

  • MAC UPDATE BEWARE!!

Hello everyone! this is my first post here. (i believe) I'm in a big situation here and it seems like everyone else may be in the same. After updating to the newest update for leopard and tiger, my system has not been the same. (10.5.11)
My computer and many others that ive been around where all doing the same. Below i have some computers that I worked on and there symptoms.
    SYMPTOMS
    -slow start up
-some start up commands not working
    -firewire ports non functional
    -update freezing
-blank desktop upon loggin in (no icons, dock or anything. non functional)
    *MacBook Pro-*
It all began when it took like 10 minutes to boot up my macbook pro. (usually its like 5 sec) I thought maybe I had bad sectors in my drive or maybe the permissions are messed up. Wrong. I ran disk repair and permissions, and all was "good". I also noticed that my firewire port doesn't work anymore. I cant boot up an external harddrive, attache a camera, or anything!. After fining out that my computer is crapping out, i called apple. They suggested the norm when it come to start up problems. disk Utility, reset PRAM, power management, safe mode,...you name it. didn't work. After hours and hours of hardcore research and papers full of suggestions, nothing worked. I decided to restore my computer. So what anyone would do, I popped in the disk and started to restore. After fully (i mean fully) deleting the data on the drive, installing leopard, and booting the system, nothing worked. I mean, i still had the same problems. Firewire ports not working, and a unstable system. One may say, hardware problems? haha i dont think so. (i hope) One day it worked and one day it didn't. after updating that is. In the end, I'm shipping my computer off to apple because i dont have patients anymore.
    *-iBook G4*
I got a call from a client of mine and he was wanting to do copy come audio files to a disk. I agreed to help him. All was good until we couldn't open itunes because it required a update. So like anyone would do, I proceeded to run system updates. After running updates, one particular update was available. 10.5.11. I clicked update and all went downhill from there. The update downloaded ok and it hanged on the installing part. it was just sitting there for 20 min. with no sounds or nothing. So i tried quitting with no result. I forced the system to shut down and i was paining on restarting back into mac. ah, no no no. nope! after having the computer sit for 1/2 hour, the system wasnt booting at all. after several tries, no luck. I tried everything. you name is i've done it. reset pram, pwr mgr, safe md, disk utility, target mode,...everything! nothing. So i decided for this computer to do an archive and preserving. I couldn't delete the system because 1 it wasn't mine, two the person had 10GB of pictures from all over the word, and 3 he did't have it all backed up. So. i did an archive with preserving. YES! finally. my computer booted back up. long and behold, my password didn't work. nothing worked! I reset the password, and tried again. After 3 hours or trouble shooting, phone talk, and buddy help, the system booted up. booted up to a blank wallpaper screen with no return of opening successful. After that failed, i shut down the system and did some thinking. I wanted to just back up the system at this point. Most of the boot up commands wernt working and i was running out of ideas. Target Mode! I'll try that. After hooking up the cable to a working stable mac, the computer wasn't showing up. nothing was happening. I suspected this to be the mysterious fire port that was causing the problem. with no luck, i went to get some help...
    *-mac g4 towers/other*
I'm in a TV/Video class. We use firewire cameras and DV Decks. After updating last weekend, nothing has been working sense. The computer wou;d detect any firewire devices or anything! Not even a new imac that was updated! Your probably saying, wow thats odd. After 2 days of research, product testing, and isolation of the problem, we couldnt get it fixed, and we suspected it to be the update
    Conclusion
    this update killed my mac
this update killed my clients computer :P
this update made us from not doing our video editing work at school :\
this update is baaaaaaaaaaaad. at least to all the computers that ive been around. like 6!
that being said, I called up bestbuy/apple store today. I told the apple guy there my symptoms and everything. After telling him this, He was like "thats funny, a lady with the same computer came in today with the same problem. no icons or anything on her wallpaper" After talking to him, they didn't know what the problem was and i guess was researching this too. They too were going to call apple.
I called up apple to and explain the problem to the product specialist. They are looking into it and looking at this update.
I'm suspecting it to be the update or maybe the firmware update since my firewire ports still wasnt working after reinstalling the system.
please give me your feedback. If theres anybody out there experiences the same problems, please write!

Sorry about the update confusion.. I guess my mind wasn't straight :\
Someone said that when you update your system, your computer basically uses all of its resources to do that update. Harddrive, Ram,... My computer is maxed out for upgrades. So its system specs are up there. I do find it weird that after updating this, the system just crapped out. Along with multiple other users that I know. As far as applications go, don't you think a clean install would fix everything? I mean, someone mentions that it could be common for 3rd party apps tp mess up the system. Yes your correct. If you restore the system and completely 0 out the drive, one would think that, that should fix it. So its much more then the one update. Its sounding like the firmware update to me because once you update the firmware, you cant just time machine back to the original. You have to flash the firmware and then install the version you want. (i talked to apple and thats what they said)
So I am blaming this on the update. I dont know why some people arnt effected by it but, its weird. One day I was in heaven with my computer. The next, my computer was in ****. You have to ask yourself. If you didn't install anything, or do any changes on it, what would of caused that? I dont know. My computer and about 6 others did the same all over night.
    UPDATE
I shipped out my computer today and I'm supposed to get results in acouple of days.
I talked to a apple guy in best buy and he cant find out why computers are coming in like this and is currently researching this. He also said he called apple and apple couldn't give him any information (for some reason) about the current issue. After the fact that they knowledge that it was in issue.

    Who cares who wins

    Seriously Microsoft?
Here's the thing, I received a call from my dear mom about this issue. She's not computer expert and never will be. She has no idea how to turn anything off from computer. But she's annoyed that she has to start up computer every
single time now twice because some one of Q&A fucked up. Your given solution is Invalid! Please come to solution what even 50 year old can do with out some sort understanding how to go ms config and disable startup programs and
    run disk checks.
This update confusion makes me want go and buy my mom Apple, and then you guys have meetings on MS wondering why apple does so good. This is the reason. Everyone aren't computer wizards and rather overpay things on first day than pay
to some long haired WoW player every single time when MS Q&A fuck's up. This is second time in 30 days when I have to travel to my moms house ( 140 miles ) fix something what you guys fucked up.
Next time I send you a bill and you can debate abut it in EU highest court.
Wow, that's pretty harsh, Taavi.  You seem to have a pretty narrow-minded idea of how many
hundred of thousands of different configurations Microsoft has to support with a single, unified update system.  Go get your mom an Apple - see how that works out for you.  Something tells me you haven't
bitched or moaned about the hundreds of other updates that DID seamlessly, automatically and silently install - but now you're all venom and hate towards Microsoft for missing a small detail somewhere in in a massive list of possible configurations.
You might try using RDP or some other readily available tool to allow remote access to the box without having to drive 140 miles to dear mom's house.  That's how I take care of my parent's machines, and it's worked well for me.  Then again, I like
seeing my parents - any chance I get, and I generally get a home cooked meal out of the deal.
If you can stop acting like a douche bag long enough to actually try and troubleshoot the problem, you likely would have figured out of to solve this issue yourself.  You're one of those kinds of people who LOVE to Bandwagon-bash Microsoft
when it's convenient for you, but the rest of the time you silently LOVE to use their products.
Whatever you do, don't give Microsoft any credit for their successes - that bitter pill just might drive you over the edge.
Flames aside, here's what I did to get these particular updates to install.  It seems that KB2515325 is the hinge that's making or breaking these installs from working one-after-another.  I installed all the updates I could, did a reboot, and was
left with the 4 KB's mentioned.  I didn't download the standalone updates, either - I used Windows Update.  Here's what I did to get them all to install on my 64-Bit system:
Install KB2492386 by itself - unselect all other updates
    Reboot
Install KB2515325 by itself - unselect all other updates
    Reboot
Install KB2522422 by itself - unselect all other updates.  I was not asked to reboot after this update.
Check for updates again, and you should only have KB982018 left.  Install KB982018.
Reboot one last time, then everything will hopefully have taken.
If that works for you, Taavi, be sure and give me your address so I can send
you a bill for providing you step-by-step instructions.
