Off-line Lion Software Update Server?

So here's the scenario
I have a private network that needs Updates and have a Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4 Server running at a spearate location with internet access.
Is there a way to off-load the content that is downloaded the (Software Update Server) and transport it to the private network and distribute?
We do this with a Windows Software update server as well without issue but the Mac method is new to me.
Thanks

Well. I just checked four of my Software Update Servers..... Lion Server 10.7.4 and they continues to have problems with the "Server Essentials" group of updates - 5 of them with Post Dates of 6/11/2012 and 6/13/2012.
I'm seeing this at four physically and network(ly) seperate sites in the greater Bay Area.
All other updates cleared a few days ago but from my discussion with Apple Enterprise Tech Support.... the engineers just now, they are still "Working on it" thus aware of the issue. Apparently with most engineers at WWDC last week, not a lot got done or is getting done yet this week and so the issue is still "Open" and known at this point

  • Mountain Lion Software Update Server?

Let me start by saying that I am no server administrator, but was convinced that setting up a Mac Server on a MacMini would be relatively straightforward due to Apple's history and claims...
Server app. Your own mini IT department.
The Mac is famously easy to use, and so is Mac mini withOS X Server. That makes it perfect for people who’ve never run a server before, or for overtaxed IT departments. The Server app will walk you through the setup process step by step. And if you want help at any stage, just choose the Help menu or click the Next Steps button.
Well, it's not really working for me...
After two weeks of internet research and changing setting on the server (a 2011 Mac Mini with RAID 1 1TB drives - I upgraded myself) and the later Server app running on top of 10.8.2 (installed from software recovery on new drives) I have been able to get my Mac computers (a MacBook Pro and an iMac both running 10.8.2) to connect to the server and have it operate as a file server.
Several users now have their own log in details and home directories (on the server) and iTunes is operating using 'Home Share' from the server to all clients.
I've been trying to set up the Software Update Server and have, I think, successfully set up the server with the correct address and turned on the service. (I'd post a screen shot, but there is little to see: the 'button' is on and the settings are on 'Automatic'. All updates now show as 'Enabled' after about 3 days of the service running.
I am using address: http://myservernamehere.local:8088/index.sucatalog in Profile Manager on the server under 'Software update' in 'Device Groups' (I have added the computers to the group). I cannot find any other settings to adjust on the server, and have had little luck following Apple support documents.
I have reviewed this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2794 and read this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4069 and generally gone round in circles.
Can anyone explain in simple terms why the App store on the clients keeps showing an update available (Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0) and when I click on 'Update' I get the error 'Could not connect to the server.(-1004)'
I'm totally confused by this and will dispute Apple's claims that "It is perfect for people who have never run a server before".

    Hello,
I have yet to setup this up but it does not make any sense to me as to why the admin would have to login to the local computer to get updated. This defeats the whole point in my opinion. You can try giving the network user admin rights of the computer and see if it works.
    1. Login as the network user.
    2. Open System preferences and go to users and groups.
    3. Check the box "Allow user to administer this computer"
You may have to restart and then test it to see.
The only other thing I can think of trying on the local side is joining the computer to server if you already have not done this.
    Thanks,
    ebrind

Ok, after days of browsing on the forum I found the following hint on another discussion related to AFP access:
"This may be a service ACL issue.
It turns out one of the latest Apple updates turned on Service ACL's which caused AFP connections to be  blocked. Once I fixed the Service ACL in Server Admin... all connections and Single Sign On worked."
Well, after allowing access to all services to all users with Server Admin, we were finally able to log in the server with our admin account...
So, there must have been an update that turned on ACL's which caused even our local access, probably for OD/Kerberos, on the server to be restricted.

  • I cannot seem to get iTunes to contact software update server. Seems to only give a progress bar which but never seems to contact.  running latest version of Lion and latest iTunes

I cannot sseem to contact the iphone software update server.  Only get progress bar, but never seems to contact.  Am running Lion 1-.7.3 and most recent version of itunes(10.6).  What is up?

The servers have been jammed with everyone trying to get the new version of iTunes and iOS, so you may just need to wait a day or so until things calm down.

  • My Canon MX310 Series Printer failed as the software "is currently not available from the Software Update Server"? What is the matter with Apple OSX Mountain Lion?

Mountain Lion stopped working with our Canon MX310 Printer? Why is the software not available from the Software Update Server?

The printer and ICA scanner driver is available from Apple. There is probably some other reason why you cannot get the drivers.
You can also get the drivers from Canon.
But reading your post it sounds like you were printing to the MX310 and recently it has stopped printing. Is this the case?

  • Safari 5.1.2 not updating on SUS (Software Update Server) (Lion Server 10.7)

If you see the screenshot attached, you can see that the Software Update Server has downloaded Safari 5.1.2
However, the clients connecting to this software update server have Safari 5.1.1 and when I check for udpates it does not detect that the update for 5.1.2 is available.
When I click on Choose Version, it shows two versions of 5.1.2, but I'm unable to choose the other version of 5.1.2 to see if it works. (see 2nd screenshot)
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong and how to fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server...what does this mean? I'm trying to install windows 8.1 on my early 2009 iMac. I double check with telephone support to make sure I am able.

Assuming you are referring to the Windows Support software, normally it means the download server is busy or off line. If you know what version of the support software you need you can get it here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/downloads/
But in your case since you have an early 2009 iMac, your computer does not support Windows 8.1. See this table from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634

The iphone software update server could not be contacted" - error message recieved when i try to update to 5.1.1 via itunes , what can i do ?

    Dear Lawrence Finch:
If you're still around I hope you see this message, as you're the FIRST person (after reading every link, thread, other sites, apple support articles, etc.) to mention JB may be causing this iTunes popup window to REPEATEDLY occur:
"The iPhone software update server could not be contacted."
No, I did not hack anything (are you kidding?  Grannies don't hack!), but I unknowingly bought a 3Gs iOS 3.1 from ebay that was not advertised as JB.  Since it is like brand new, I was going to keep it (because my old backup is iOS 3.1.2) & was trying to simply restore & update, which (I thought) would remove the JB (that's what everybody says at forums, etc).
Instead, after "erasing all settings/content" (inside phone's Settings to get the prior person's name out of there), it is now stuck in White Apple Mode.
Put it in DFU/Recovery Mode & connect to iTunes but that stupid above message keeps appearing & I have already read/tried EVERYTHING to get rid of that message, starting with:
    1.  OLD phones (3Gs) with OLD iOS 3.1+ should work FINE with OLD Mac (iBook) with OLD OSX (Tiger 10.4.11) with OLD iTunes (9.2.1[5]).  So that can't be the problem.
Here's all the other things apple & others say to check which I already checked:
    2.  USB ports are FINE, both work FINE, so that's not the problem.
    3.  No "extra USB devices" are connected, ONLY a mouse, & then the phone (yes, I tried it w/o the mouse connected but that didn't help).
    4.  No "usb hubs."
    5.  Latest iTunes for this OSX has already been DL'd (iTunes 9.2.1[5]).  If you know of a newer one for this OSX, please advise.
    6.  No antivirus software.
    7.  No security software.
    8.  No routers; only 1 comcast modem, period.  Wired Ethernet.
    9.  No wifi gadgets, no wifi at all.
    10.  No firewalls, except what is on iBook in the SHARING/System-Prefs. section.  It's turned OFF.
    11.  Did the hosts/terminal thing sudo nano whatever it was.  There were only 3 lines, NO gs.apple.com:
    xxxxx local host
    xxxxx broadcast host
    xxxx local host
Oh, & btw, ATT officially unlocked this phone (after I filled out their online forms) but I can't finish the process via iTunes to get their Confirmation that "Device is Now Unlocked," so I can use T-Mo.
So that's it.  If you have any other ideas of what to do from here, since from your comment, maybe it's the stupid JB on this phone that is causing the problem (???), please advise.
    Many thanks!

    Hi blue,
Assuming that your Internet connectivity is working fine otherwise—
Try moving (if you'd like to replace it if this doesn't fix the problem) or deleting the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.
If that doesn't work, I'd go to Apple's downloads page and get the 10.5.4 combo updater and install that. That might fix it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Mountain Lion software update problem

I have purchased Mac book pro in July 2012. I wanted to download the Mountain Lion software update. I have redeemed the same from the Mac store. The downloading icon has appeared but it does not seem to be progressing...what could be the problem??

In the past,  I have taken certain larger upgrades from apple at non-peak hours (magically everything was installed quickly) other times I have taken large upgrades from apple at peak hours ( I took forever and I questioned what is going on) this could be the issue.  "server load" or your ISP (internet service provider)
    * peak hours (when a lot of people are off work down loading the newest os or applications)

  • 'ipod software update server can not be contacted' HELP!!!!

I am trying and trying to get my husbands Christmas gift to work. I did not know much about ipods when I ordered it. I got a refurbished one (first mistake) It is formated for a mac. I can NOT get it to reformat for my PC. A window keeps showing up that says "ipod software update server can not be contacted" and under it "make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active or try again later"
I am about ready to toss this thing out the window. Or send it back and eat the 20% re-stocking fee the company has.
This is our first ipod and I am now really turned off by them
Do you think that if I took it to the apple store that they could reformat it?

I have an iPod 30Gb which updated to 1.3 without problem on WinXP, and another which doesn't update on Win2K. Win2K doesn't have a built-in firewall and I don't have any third-party firewall installed on it. So the port issue you just mentioned shouldn't be at stake.
So, to get to the bottom of this, I just wasted a couple hours trying a host of things. I fired up Wireshark (freeware protocol network analyzer), here's the bottom line:
    1. While running the built-in iTunes "Network Diagnostics", Wireshark does show that iTunes communicates with the following remote services:
    www.apple.com.akadns.net
    a227.da1.akamai.com
    phobos.apple.com
The result of that test says connection active: no, Connected: no, etc. Red dot on the middle test.
    2. When I click on the Update button in iTunes' iPod section, Wireshark doesn't show any HTTP request, or any other type of remote request, for that matter. This means iTunes simply never accesses the update site.
    3. I don't think any port is blocked in Win2K (although I read somewhere that disabling some Windows services can close some ports). Another block could be made router-side (either local router or ISP), but as I've already mentioned, iTunes has no trouble accessing the update site on my XP machine, and they're on the same router; the only difference is, the Win2K laptop is plugged into an Ethernet cable, the XP laptop is on wireless.
So, where the explanation given to dealyb is valid because of the company's firewall, it doesn't seem to apply to me.
More investigations needed. If anyone wants to pick up from there and provide additional data... This is exceedingly annoying.

  • Software for HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, and found that I could no longer print to  my HP CM1312nfi.
This is usually a problem with HP at every upgrade, but this time, they appear to have offloaded the driver download process to Apple.
My printer is connected wirelessly through a time capsule by IP address—the physical, not the virtual, e.g: 169.254.xx.xx instead of 10.0.1.x.
When I try to download the driver by bonjour or IP, I get the following error message:
Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.
Is this truly a Software Update server error, and if so, any clue when it will be resolved?
I am able to print with the generic driver as of now, but fax and scan capabilites are gone. The add fax dialog  lists no devices.
Scanning is not supported on my printer model with the Hewlett Packard Print 2.12 driver. Will support be forthcoming, or did Mountain Lion brick my scanner?
Thanks for your time and attention.

Of course, once I posted this, I tried again and downloaded the driver without issue.
My second question still stands, however:
Scanning is not supported on my printer model with the Hewlett Packard Print 2.12 driver. Will support be forthcoming, or did Mountain Lion brick my scanner?

  • Can't install printer driver: HP Color LaserJet 2605dn drivers "not currently available from the Software Update server"

I was having trouble printing to my HP Color LaserJet 2605dn from a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion, so I went to System Prefernces -> Print & Scan deleted it and atempted to re-add it.  When I try add the printer I get this message:
Software for this printer is available from Apple. Would you like to download and install it?
After clicking Download & Install (the only option other than Cancel), I get this:
Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet 2605dn because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.
What's the workaround when Mountain Lion can't find the driver?
    Thanks!

The 2605dn has dual Network and USB connectivity. Which are you attempting to configure: Network or attached USB?
Printer on, and if networked, use a static IP address
    Print & Scan
    IP
    Provide printer static IP address
Select Printer Software ... HP Color LaserJet 2605dn driver (not sure about that 2600 driver)
    Add
Configure Driver under Options and Supplies
I have a 1994 HP Laserjet 4m Plus set up using these steps and the appropriate driver. I just added another network printer, using the same IP address, but using the above 2605dn driver without any issue other than complaint about a redundant IP address.
Hopefully, you have already sorted this out.
