Off Topic - I Really Like N97

As the title suggests.
I know there are a lot of bugs in the phone, and I realise that some of these are really annoying, if somewhat disappointing. But I guess there will always be teething problems with any new device. I wont go into the bugs below. This is just my opinion.
For a mobile phone, and yes its still a mobile phone regardless of its "mobile computer" references, it has got to be one of the best on the market. I know everyone compares it to an iPhone, but if you really want an iPhone, then buy an iPhone, I personally prefer the N97. This is the first Nokia I have had in many years, having used the N95 for about 2 months a while back, I am not disappointed.
I understand that many people who have paid £500 / $700 SIM free phone may have wanted, and rightfully so a more bug free release, we will get that eventually. I am not a fan of blackberrys either, and this phone does email well unless you want to be a business user. For the features of this phone, it is so powerful. Think an FM transmitter, qwerty keyboard, nice screen, musicplayer with 32GB of space, 5megapixel camera, apps, maps......etc etc Yes the RAM could be better, but maybe that would have pushed the price up a bit again. The call quality is second to none as well. Pity you cant get smilies in the text's tho! Haha
The OVI store is getting much better, pity the apps are quite expensive at the moment, and there is no redownload available if you remove program.
It's a shame there are so many N97 bashers out there, that just need to give it a chance to shine. The iPhone was far from perfect when that was first released. No MMS, no sms forwarding, no video, and a small camera. People tend to forget that.
Overall, I'm overjoyed with my Nokia N97!!

You're right, there are some really good things about this phone and the Ovi store is starting to get some good apps (now if Ovi would only introduce a re-download function), and hopefully the prices of apps will come down (I purchased one for US$4.99 and then checked the Apple store and the exact same app was 99c, what's that about?). There are some niggles with the phone and the UI is inconsistent and a bit dated but hopefully these things will get fixed/improved in future FW updates.
I have to disagree on the RAM, they should have put double in the phone due to the demands of the widgets and mulit-tasking. I probably would have paid $50 more for the benefit to the performance of the device. Anyway hopefully the available RAM will also improve with future FW updates.
Overall I am pretty happy with the phone.

  • WebAssist Cart help? I know it's off topic but... Could really use some help...

I've got a shopping cart that is working and I'm trying to update the
quantities in inventory by subtracting the quantity ordered from the total
inventory in a table called ITEMS.
I can update a record after a sale in the cart, but right now it is
updating by completely replacing the value of the items in inventory with
the quantity in the checkout cart. So, if there are 800 items, after the
update, there are -1 total in inventory, not 799.
The problem is that I don't know how to coordinate the item(s) in the stored
shopping cart with a call to their ID and quantity in the online database.
Here's what I have so far:

  • One thing I really like on N97

If people following the forums you guys already know how ridiculous is the RAM in this device as well as the c: memory.. But I must say I really like how the internet connections gets handled.. I always like to decide which network the device is connected and I also like to know when it is disconnected.. N97 does all that for me and only thing I did was to enter my home network pass and wireless carrier selection ONLY ONCE.. Now every application seems to know what to do so I never have to choose every single time.. I am really happy with how the connections are handled!

what i like on N97 is how it looks , and i like the OS
but when i first heard about it i really think that it would be the fastest phone nokia ever made ,but i am now dissapointed
so i am thinking of selling my ridicules N78 and buying a new phone(maybe SAMSUNG) or waiting until Nokia fix there N97 or give us a really nice phone,
    so Nokia i am waiting...........

  • Off topic: General comment

    All,
I know this is totally off-topic but this is the best way to send a very important message.
One of those days, someone called to us to offer Solaris support services, because that person was reading this forum and saw our entries. I guess, if we are here asking for help, and helping others, the idea is to use the community to achieve better results.
I understand that every business needs to make money, but there are some limits as well. If we had any interest to hire a consulant and pay for him/her services, we would not be here making posts.
Also, what is much more important, is to share information and knowledge about a product, Solaris, which is open source now.
So, if there are any other business digger here, please do not contact us in anyway, unless we ask for that contact. Right now, that person and his company are on my personal "avoid contact at any cost" list.
    Cheers
    Andreas

Printers are the Demon Seed, the work of Beelzebub. While my Epson R340 will of course print for weeks on end just fine, if I suddenly need to print something urgently, it is 100% guaranteed to print it in purple. Or, the heads will need cleaning, resulting in two hours of listening to "neeeeeeeeh neh-neh-neh-neh-neh neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh neh neh neh'. Or, the DVD's doesn't get drawn into the printer properly, the resulting label is half off the disc, and it's just made a nice coaster.
I broke my last Epson while leaping up and down upon it in an apoplectic rage in such circumstances. Really.
But it seems you are right, we have no option. Finally, Print Shop by Broderbund is probably like a high-tech wunderkind chrome robot when compared to the Official Worst Appplication of All Time, Epson Print CD, which closely resembles a turd.
    Rant rant rant.

  • Web Portfolio Software Advice (off topic)

    hi all.
i have been really happy with my ability to organize a very large amount of images in Aperture and to publish them easily to Flickr (among other things).
this has now freed me up to focus on creating a new website for an old website that needs updating. right now i have just created a /link/ for the pictures on the webpages which takes the viewer to the flickr albums.
i am looking at "themes" such as the WordPress Photography theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/) and i am also looking at sites that are using the "autoviewer" or "autoviewer pro" software.
    http://www.iloveconcrete.net/drive1/drive1.html
    http://www.simpleviewer.net/autoviewer/
anyway, i am familiar with using wordpress UI but i am desperately trying to find a method where i don't have to use the wordpress image uploader. i guess the holy grail would be to just "publish" album "code" out of Aperture that i would then embed into a WP theme website which i am sure i could create in a week or something.
anyway, does anyone know of anywhere i can ask such questions or get some leads on keeping this workflow simple but create a nice website at the same time?
TIA and apologies for the off-topic post.

I liked "Waves" and thought most of the sounds were good- the piano was very realistic to my casual listen. I did however find the backing strings of the first couple of minutes to be fairly "synth" sounding, maybe that's what you wanted, but to me it could have sounded more like an actual string ensemble. Later on it seemed to be working more to my liking with the strings playing individually.
It's not the most expensive thing out there, but I have been using IK Multimedia's Philharmonik, which is not good for a lot of things, but it does really capture a real "woody" and "dry" sound on the cellos, violas, etc.
I also tend to agree that MySpace could be a good addition for you. And I notice that your vox on the podcast was only coming at me from the left.
Keep it up! It's a lot of fun to do- I'll send you a thing I wrote with Philharmonik and Sibelius 5, it's sort of just me learning those and not really finished, still, you'll get an idea of what Philharmonik sounds like.

  • Sort of off topic, but same old question looking for a new answer

Ok I'm ready to start a new site. I'm going cheap as it's all coming out of my pocket including hosting. I want to put a video chat room on my site. Is there anyway to capture a webcam in this fashion in director. I've done tons of searching but I can't really find anything. I'm trying to avoid using the flash communication server for three reasons. 1) I already have the director multiuser server that will host up to 1000 users (the room will never be anything close to that big 50 peeps tops) and my web host will support it and install it for me. 2) I can't find anything at a really cheap price. I'm looking at 25 cam users at once... 3) Actionscript is nothing I've every really worked with before, but I could do the lingo programming.
I have a few questions First of all I read something about putting a flash element on the stage, and that the flash player is what captures the webcam. But I assume that it still needs flash communication sever to upload the video. Is this correct?
Is there an xtra that will do what I  want?
I read something about encoding the video to realvideo, but I have no clue how as I've never done anything like that before. Will this work and do you know of a tutorial for this?
Do you know of a really really cheap flash comm host?
Really off topic but, I could write the text chat end of it in cold fusion. Is there a known way to easily add the video in this way?
Does anyone know of a cheap off the shelf video chat room that I can put up on my site and just pay for the bandwidth overage that it uses?
Thanks for any help any of you could give me.

There are several 2.4 GHz MacBook pros shipped over several years.
If this is your Mac (2007 model) scroll down to the memory section and read:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-santa-rosa-specs.html
    Standard RAM:
    2 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    6 GB*
    Details:
2 GB installed as two 1 GB modules. No slots free.
*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.
Site sponsor Other World Computing sells MacBook Pro memory, as well as hard drives, batteries, carrying cases, and accessories.
... and that sponsor is not a bad place to get RAM at all. They are experts, and back it up with a "money back if it does not work in your Mac" guarantee.

  • Off topic, HTML wanted

This is off topic, but wouldn't these forums be helped if we could actually use HTML? I'd rather click a link than copy/paste. And if you wanted to discuss, for example, this mapping:
    ^X - cut
    ^C - copy
^V - pastewouldn't that be nicer as an unordered list, or a table?
It's been 17 years since Berners-Lee invented HTML. At Sun, the network is the computer. I think we should ask Sun, politely, of course, if they would think about bringing these fora right into the twenty-first century.

    warnerja:
Thanks. Didn't know that. Where did you find that?
    Herko_ter_Horst::
I can see lots of reasons to avoid javascript, but "the users might screw it up" is no reason to avoid HTML. I took a look at BBCode and I really don't like the idea of "near HTML" with everything slightly different from the HTML that I know. And I love tables, too, which aren't in BBCode.
    Ceci:
Never? In my website I discuss drawing a button's borders. To show where the lines begin and end I drew a picture. I'd love to say
    <img src=" http://www.martinrinehart.com/graphics/borders.gif">
right here. But I can't, so you have to select, copy, new page, paste and go.
If you take a look I think you'll agree that the picture explains the issues better than a whole lot of words. (Actually, the picture is a nicer version of a pencil sketch I made while I was coding.)

  • Off Topic: Music used on Tronic profile on Apple Pro website

    Hello everyone,
First of all my humble apologies for posting an off topic message, but I really don't know where else to ask this, I've been googling and browsing like mad.
Does somebody know the music used on the profile that Apple did of Tronic NYC for their Pro page?
    The profile is here: http://www.apple.com/pro/profiles/tronic/
Thank you all in advance! Hope someone knows this :/

    Thanks for your answer!
Although could be, it's not that, I've heard this same song once in a trip to Italy on the TV on a commercial too. This is really driving me insane, they use some great music for some of this profiles like the one they did on 2x4.
    Thanks for the help though

  • VirtualBox - somewhat off-topic

I know this is somewhat off-topic, but I'm hoping there's some expertise here that will be a bit more helpful than when I asked this on the VirtualBox forums.
For a coupe of years now I've been running my own private test lab on my laptop, using VMworkstation. It's been working to my satisfaction, but with all the recommendations to use VirtualBox (after all, it's free) I thought I'd give it a try. This was a few months back, and I ran into a real problem with the way VB appears to handle networking vs. VMware.
With VMware, I set all my virtual machines to use NAT. This allows me to give the vm a fixed IP address, not reveal itself outside the host OS, and still reach the internet for things like yum updates. Obviousely, bridged network would allow me to access the inernet, but would make me have to play by the rules of whatever network I'm on -- my company or my home ISP. Host only would address that but not allow me to pull updates from the internet.
Now, with VirtualBox, I couldn't get NAT to work with a fixed IP address that I assigned to the vm. The guys at the VB forum couldn't seem to understand why that was an issue. They just kept saying to allow the vm to use a DHCP assigned address and 'everything just works'.
I don't have VB installed at the moment, so can't re-run tests, but thought I'd throw this out to see if it rings a bell with anyone, and if so if there might be a solution. I still tend to believe VB will do a fixed guest IP with NAT and I just wasn't seeing how to make it work, but perhaps not.
    Comments?

    Dude wrote:
In NAT mode, the guest network interface is assigned to the IPv4 range 10.0.x.0/24 by default where x corresponds to the instance of the NAT interface +2. So x is 2 when there is only one NAT instance active. In that case the guest is assigned to the address 10.0.2.15, the gateway is set to 10.0.2.2 and the name server can be found at 10.0.2.3.
If, for any reason, the NAT network needs to be changed, this can be achieved with the following command:
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natnet1 "192.168/16"
This command would reserve the network addresses from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.254.254 for the first NAT network instance of "VM name". The guest IP would be assigned to 192.168.0.15 and the default gateway could be found at 192.168.0.2.
I suggest to review the documentation for more details
    http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch06.html
Sorry for the delayed response. I've just now re-installed VBox and created a 64-bit Oracle Linux 5.7 machine.
After reading yet again the networking chapter in the VBox user manual, I'm afraid I'm just as confused as ever. Perhaps if I detail exactly how I'm used to setting things up with VMware and the resulting behavior, we can see the corollary for VBox.
When I install VMware, it creates two network adapters on the host OS, vmnet1 and vmnet8. vmnet8 is used for NAT. I've installed on several machines and vmnet8 is always assigned an address of 192.168.something.1. The 'something' seems to vary from install to install. I'm not sure what controls the assigned value there, but have never really needed to explore that. My current setup is at 192.168.111.1.
Next, I create a virtual machine. There I configure eth0 to use a fixed IP address of 192.168.xxx.yyy, where 'xxx' matches the value of the vmnet8 adapter on the host os, and 'yyy' is assigned sequentially, starting with 101 for the first machine I create, 102 for the next, etc. When creating these machines, I've found I have to set the gateway and DNS address to 192.168.xxx.2.
    With that setup,
    - my guest vm can ping the host
    - the host can ping the guest vm
    - I can create an entry in the host os's 'hosts' file pointing to the guest vm (ie: 192.168.111.101 vmlnxsrv01.vmdomain vmlnsxrv01), then use that name to refer to the vm
    - I can use an ssh client like putty (on the host os) to connect to the vm, exactly like I would connect to a remote box on my company's network
    - The vm can reach the internet to do web browsing, download rpms, etc.
Now, when i installedVbox, it created one additional network adapter on the host os. It is running at 192.168.56.1
I created the virtual machine, giving it a fixed IP address of 192.168.56.111, gateway and dns address of 192.168.56.2
Ping of the vm ip address from the host returns 'host unreachable' doesn't work either direction
    C:\Users\ed>ping 192.168.56.111
Pinging 192.168.56.111 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.56.1: Destination host unreachable.
    Ping statistics for 192.168.56.111:
        Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Control-C
^CSame from the other end, pinging 192.168.56.1 and 192.168.56.2 from the vm
Tried the vboxmanage, but not sure if I gave it the correct parameters.
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>vboxmanage modifyvm "lnxsrv11" --natpf1 "gue
    tssh,tcp,,2222,192.168.56.111,22"
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>ping 192.168.56.111
Pinging 192.168.56.111 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.56.1: Destination host unreachable. Also at this point, an attempt to establish a putty session to 192.168.56.111 times out.

  • Off topic: posting XML/HTML in these forums

How do you post XML to these forums? Encoding the < as > just gets interpreted as a literal, but using straight XML doesn't work because if there's overlap with HTML, the XML gets formatted as HTML. Here's an example -- if you have an XML tag called "s" (< s n a m e = " f o o " > b a r < / s > ), look what happens (because of the strikethrough HTML tag): <s name="foo">bar</s>.
    Sorry to post off-topic!

    Hello red_menace,
Indeed a pre-processing code like yours is always an option for us, but from my point of view, the correct solution is for the discussions' admins to disable this meddlesome formatting feature of the new fora software.
This new feature affects not only new posts but also the existing messages in the fora, that means it has rendered quite a few useful messages totally useless. This is actually serious data loss caused by the thoughtless software. And for what?
After all, these discussions' boards are not chat rooms where people might want some simple input methods for fancy text formattings, but technical support fora where people frequently post programming codes, computer outputs and so forth that have many reserved symbols and notation.
I really wish they may fix this promptly.

  • Off Topic - Cameras - 30D, 5D or D200?

Hi there, I'm a non-pro frequenter of the Apple discussion boards, I know this is off topic but I'd sure appreciate some quick advice, I need a camera ASAP for a work project and I don't have time to do the research that I should I'm hoping somebody here can give me a concise answer. My choices so far are narrowed down to the Canon 30D, the Nikon D200, and possibley the Canon 5D can any one recommend which would be the better camera for image quality when used by a non-pro (although I do have some technical experience and don't have a problem using a camera in manual mode). Main point is the image quality at the end of the day, and also the better investment as a camera. Mostly I don't want to get an over priced dudd... I've heard the 5D is good but over priced - anyway.... any help anyone? I'd really appreciate it.
    Many Thanks,
    Miklos.

All those cameras and many less expensive others when used with top quality Nikon/Canon lenses are capable of providing excellent image quality when used with a (very essential) pro quality tripod and head plus remote shutter release (add $500-1000 for those if you intend to build a rig at the pro end of things). The 5D is slightly more capable of the best low light images in the group, but at a cost of more than twice as much. The lenses you choose will be much more relevant than the individual cameras - and should accordingly represent more than half of your expenditure.
The choice between Nikon and Canon should be made by handling the cameras in your short list. Hopefully ignoring the BS that salesman insists on telling you.

DSLRs are not investments per se as cameras any more than computers are. DSLR values will decrease over time, but they invest extremely well in your productivity as a photographer.
IMO since you are relatively inexperienced in this dynamic world of DSLR you should start at the $1500 range for camera body only and add high quality lenses. If you choose Nikon, for indoors architecture I recommend the excellent 10.5mm fisheye that using software can provide rectilinear images, the excellent 12-24mm, and a f/1.4 50mm. At the tele end I like the 70-200mm VR, but an 18-200mm would probably suit for photojournalism type shots.
If you choose Canon there are equally excellent lenses available. I recommend against third party lenses because they typically will not support all the features of modern Nikon/Canon DSLR systems in the future even if they do so today.
Note that although architectural is often shot with DSLR (including by me), highest quality architectural images are not created with DSLR cameras. They are shot with medium format film view cameras that allow extensive tilts and swings within the camera body. The use of such cameras makes a huge difference.

    Off topic: Printers
I'm looking for a good printer that will handle printed DVD labels and print directly DVD.
I've looked at the Epson 380, but it doesn't print type as well as I may need.
    Any suggestions?
I've been using Epsons for years and would like to look at alternative brands.
The $200 price range I'm looking at. I know it is alot to ask for that kind of money, I just can't afford any more
    Dave

  • Off-Topic Speculation?

hello everyone, I'm really new to these boards so please don't be too harsh on a newbie lol. I just received an email stating my post had been deleted from the "does anybody know when the i5/i7 imacs will actually ship?" thread. All I did was ask whether anybody thought the delay in setting a specific date might be due to overheating issues and my post was removed as being "off-topic" and "speculative"....isn't the premise of that entire board speculative? I see all kind of comments on there speculating reasons for the lack of a set date but yet I merely ask if it might be due to heat issues and BAM...its gone. I wasn't claiming it was because of overheating I was only asking if maybe it was possible....because I ordered an i5. It said my post was removed by host....does that mean the person who started the thread deleted my post or an Apple employee? I certainly hope its not the latter because like I said, that whole thread is based on speculation so for my post to be removed so quickly by an Apple employee makes me wonder if maybe there is a problem if so I think those of us who have put 2000 or more toward these computers deserve to know...or at the very least, not be censored for asking. Like I said I don't know if thats even the case with post deletion...I'm fairly new here.

Again thanks everyone and Apple...I love ya but I feel like even though these forums are for your customers you are forcing some of us to discuss the products we bought from you elsewhere on the web if we want to do so freely. I'm sure that is not the intention of these boards : )
Actually, I think it is Apple's overt intention to limit these forums to user-to-user discussion of technical issues with Apple products, just as the Terms of Use explain. The ToU expressly forbid discussion of unreleased products or of Apple policies here, so if you want to do that, you should do so elsewhere on the web.
The ToU exist not so much to protect Apple's reputation or its well-known penchant for secrecy about unreleased products as they do to insure that these forums are useful & productive for those who use them. Because we are just users, & because Apple employees are expressly forbidden from posting anything here that could be considered as officially from any Apple source other than Discussions moderators or hosts, any reply to comments about these things would of necessity be conjecture -- IOW, just wild guesses. But because these forums are hosted by Apple, some users will assume otherwise, as if we are somehow Apple insiders, or that comments to Apple (like your mention of "your customers") are actually somehow reaching those officially empowered to speak for Apple about such things.
