(off topic) Quick advice needed RE: publishing

(sorry for the waaayyy off-topic post, but I'm sure some of you gurus would know the answer to this. I'm sort of in 'freak-out' mode right now.)
So my CD artwork is finalized, and slated to go to press this Friday. I just realized that, though I am registered with BMI, I put no mention of that on the disc or in the liner notes. DOH!
Do I need to? If so, is simply putting "Copyright 2006 [band name here], BMI" sufficient? Or do I need a 'music company' name (in other words, not the band name).

Songs are tracked and money is distributed by song title, writer and publisher name. Don't make it hard for people to pay you. Make sure you get your publisher info on there.

Quick advice needed on Observer and Observable...

Ok at the moment i have about 10 sorting algorithms in 10 classes. They all extend another class which includes methods like print, randomise, user input etc etc which all sorting classes use. So basically my sorting classes only sort and nothing more is done in those classes.
Now what i want to do is have some statistics on a GUI. This will include copy coperations, compare operations and total operations. I will obviously need to input where these operations occur for each sorting class. I want the GUI to be updated each time an operation happens. All my sorts run in a thread, i did this so i can choose the speed of the sort with a JSlider.
My question is, will i need to be using the Observer and Observable interface? If so, can i have some advice into how i would structure this. If not, then how else can i do a statistics class. I tried a way without this approach, but it didn't seem too OO friendly. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not a GUI guy and this is definitely not the best way to do it - but you could probably call an update method after each calculation or whatever. Make a static method that has a reference to your GUI form.
This is definitely not an elegant solution - but I think it's explicit and readable, and that can be more valuable than elegance.

Off Topic, But I Need An Answer (About Buying an iBook G3)

I was looking around on eBay for different stuff and I came across several iBook G3's (the colored ones). I know that technology has changed a lot, but I think it would be cool to have one just to fool around on and show off (it would turn heads).
I found a user-upgraded model with the following specs:
Processor: PowerPC 366 MHz
RAM: 320 mb
Hard Drive: 20 gig
12" screen
Mac OS X Panther
Include Microsoft Office X
I wouldn't pay more than $200 total (with shipping) for something like this.
Would that setup be able to surf the internet, perform basic word processing, play iTunes music, and use MSN Messenger relativly well? Or is it simply a terrible idea to buy something like this off eBay?

You most likely wont find a colored iBook with a 20GB drive, the shipping hard drives for the models had 4, 6 or 10GB drives.
Then again, I see you did, good luck at getting it for less than $200.

Quick advice needed...

I have a collection of sorting algorithms which are all implemented. All of these classes have the method 'print' and 'randomise' (generates a random array of integers). This is obviously redundant, writing these two methods in every class. Should i make a class for these two methods and let every other class extend it. Or should i use an interface? Which then i will implement is every class. I'm not too sure, it would be great if i had some advice. Any help is appreciated.

To me, it doesn't sound like the job of a sorting algorithm is to either generate random numbers or print out anything. I think you have incorrectly factored your application. The sorting algorithm should sort, period. It's up to the code that uses the sorting algorithm to provide the data - whether it's random or read from a file, etc... TThe sorting algorithm shouldn't know or care how the data was generated. And as well, once the data is sorted, the sorting algorithm shouldn't print it out: that's for the code using the sorting algorithm to handle. That code may print out the data or go on to use the data further. Again, the sorting algorithm shouldn't know or care in the least about that.

Maybe off topic, but I need some free audio ripping software

I use STP extensively for post production, but I have to rip audio for 18 lessons from 8 DVDs. There is something out there for Win, but I am on 10.6.
Is there any freeware out there for OSX that will rip audio from DVDs to .mp3? Even if I can get .wav or .aiff I can cover to mp2 via soundbooth in CS4.
Please no shareware or "have to eventually buy it" software. I do have mac the ripper and mpeg steamclip. Can that be a route?

I am not sure which version to look for. There are so many on the update page. I am trying to get .mp3s from DVDs without having to spend 4 hours using multiple programs to rip the audio. For my first batch I used compressor to export as an .aif and then used soundbooth CS3 to save as an .mp3. I already had these files on my HD because I edited the video. I still have to rip audio from 8 DVDs and convert that audio to mp3 for file transfer to a client.

I would suggest it is obvious I do not live in the US.
When looking on the net everything I find show a US postal zip code as 5 long.
However I seem to remember seeing codes that were longer than 5 long.

Major advice needed with ATT / IPHONE / MICROCELL misleading/doesn't work

I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but I need some advice.
I've been battling ATT since thanksgiving week. I moved into a house (checked the coverage map before moving, and saw I was in the clear)
I have no service here. NOTHING. I had to use a verizon phone to call them, since Verizon actually works. They tell me they're working on it... weeks go by. A month, and another month of calling them and wondering what they could actually be doing to rectify my problem. Well about 2 weeks ago, ATT's RF engineer was hanging around my house for a couple of days. He told me they didn't even notify him about my problem until days before he arrived! So they were lying to me the whole time about trying to fix my lack of service. I kept asking them, "Can't you lend me a microcell until you fix what's wrong here?" They just said "No, you have to buy that and pay for it's service."
So it's now Feb 25th, and it's day II with my microcell. It shows 5 bars, but most of my calls are dropped, or I'm talking to someone that can't hear me. I emailed them last night asking if I could just be let go from this contract so I can move on and get back to business. They will waive my fee if I give them my Iphone 4 which I've owned for 11 months. Doesn't this seem a little strange??
I mentioned how I've lost many clients and a lot of money due to the fact that they think I'm ducking their calls because I don't receive them unless I drive 2 miles from where I live.
Again, today I talked with the service rep and they will not budge. Is there something in the contract that would help me out? Even the RF engineer/tech told me there is nothing they can do (other than putting up more towers!)
So I'm stuck in this nightmare with a phone that doesn't work, and paying for it. I still have a year on my contract and I just want out. The iphone was fun and all but I'm done with att and their ransom fees.
Can someone help me?

As you know, this is a user-ro-user iPhone tech support site. Neither Apple or AT&T participate here. The only way you can resolve your reception and service issues is through AT&T - no one here could possibly fix this. AT&T does provide free MicroCell service in some known poor coverage areas.
You can try some basic troubleshooting steps as described in the User Guide - Restart, Reset, Restore - but I doubt there is a problem in the phone itself.
IF you're not getting anywhere with AT&T, file a complaint with the FCC. Did the AT&T coverage map showed coverage in your area before you purchased the phone? You might want to get a lawyer to help.

change the date stamp on a set of files within a directory. Anyone
know a quick trick? Just need to mark all files with today's date.
We are restricted on freeware and shareware on site, so would

you could change it there. In Windows I think you are restricted to

Web Portfolio Software Advice (off topic)

hi all.
i have been really happy with my ability to organize a very large amount of images in Aperture and to publish them easily to Flickr (among other things).
this has now freed me up to focus on creating a new website for an old website that needs updating. right now i have just created a /link/ for the pictures on the webpages which takes the viewer to the flickr albums.
i am looking at "themes" such as the WordPress Photography theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/) and i am also looking at sites that are using the "autoviewer" or "autoviewer pro" software.

anyway, i am familiar with using wordpress UI but i am desperately trying to find a method where i don't have to use the wordpress image uploader. i guess the holy grail would be to just "publish" album "code" out of Aperture that i would then embed into a WP theme website which i am sure i could create in a week or something.
anyway, does anyone know of anywhere i can ask such questions or get some leads on keeping this workflow simple but create a nice website at the same time?

I liked "Waves" and thought most of the sounds were good- the piano was very realistic to my casual listen. I did however find the backing strings of the first couple of minutes to be fairly "synth" sounding, maybe that's what you wanted, but to me it could have sounded more like an actual string ensemble. Later on it seemed to be working more to my liking with the strings playing individually.
It's not the most expensive thing out there, but I have been using IK Multimedia's Philharmonik, which is not good for a lot of things, but it does really capture a real "woody" and "dry" sound on the cellos, violas, etc.
I also tend to agree that MySpace could be a good addition for you. And I notice that your vox on the podcast was only coming at me from the left.
Keep it up! It's a lot of fun to do- I'll send you a thing I wrote with Philharmonik and Sibelius 5, it's sort of just me learning those and not really finished, still, you'll get an idea of what Philharmonik sounds like.

Off Topic - Cameras - 30D, 5D or D200?

Hi there, I'm a non-pro frequenter of the Apple discussion boards, I know this is off topic but I'd sure appreciate some quick advice, I need a camera ASAP for a work project and I don't have time to do the research that I should I'm hoping somebody here can give me a concise answer. My choices so far are narrowed down to the Canon 30D, the Nikon D200, and possibley the Canon 5D can any one recommend which would be the better camera for image quality when used by a non-pro (although I do have some technical experience and don't have a problem using a camera in manual mode). Main point is the image quality at the end of the day, and also the better investment as a camera. Mostly I don't want to get an over priced dudd... I've heard the 5D is good but over priced - anyway.... any help anyone? I'd really appreciate it.

All those cameras and many less expensive others when used with top quality Nikon/Canon lenses are capable of providing excellent image quality when used with a (very essential) pro quality tripod and head plus remote shutter release (add $500-1000 for those if you intend to build a rig at the pro end of things). The 5D is slightly more capable of the best low light images in the group, but at a cost of more than twice as much. The lenses you choose will be much more relevant than the individual cameras - and should accordingly represent more than half of your expenditure.
The choice between Nikon and Canon should be made by handling the cameras in your short list. Hopefully ignoring the BS that salesman insists on telling you.
Main point is the image quality at the
end of the day, and also the better investment as a
camera. Mostly I don't want to get an over priced
dudd... I've heard the 5D is good but over priced -
anyway...
DSLRs are not investments per se as cameras any more than computers are. DSLR values will decrease over time, but they invest extremely well in your productivity as a photographer.
IMO since you are relatively inexperienced in this dynamic world of DSLR you should start at the $1500 range for camera body only and add high quality lenses. If you choose Nikon, for indoors architecture I recommend the excellent 10.5mm fisheye that using software can provide rectilinear images, the excellent 12-24mm, and a f/1.4 50mm. At the tele end I like the 70-200mm VR, but an 18-200mm would probably suit for photojournalism type shots.
If you choose Canon there are equally excellent lenses available. I recommend against third party lenses because they typically will not support all the features of modern Nikon/Canon DSLR systems in the future even if they do so today.
Note that although architectural is often shot with DSLR (including by me), highest quality architectural images are not created with DSLR cameras. They are shot with medium format film view cameras that allow extensive tilts and swings within the camera body. The use of such cameras makes a huge difference.

Photoshop Elements 8 advice needed please

Hello!
I received PSE8 for Christmas and have Never used one of these programs before! I noticed it does not come with a manual of any sort and did find a few books on amazon and was wondering if any of you "experienced" users could recommend one to me!
Was looking at either the "Dummies" book for PSE8 or the "Missing Manual" series.
Any advice is appreciated! I learn quick but need good clean explanations!

I used PE The Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage when I started out with an earlier version of the program. The chapters are well written and illustrated. It is a quality product and should serve you well. Barbara moderates this board and is generous with her advice. I have no commercial connection with the author or with the publisher.

(off topic) BEWARE OF CNET DOWNLOADS!!!!

I know that this is slighly off-topic for this forum, but I wanted to spread the word about CNET downloads (download.com). Several months ago, CNET was slapped on the wrist for intentionally adding spyware into the programs on their download website.
Well, they stopped for a while and they're at it again. I wrote to them saying that I had trusted CNET for years because of their policy against spyware and mailicious code. A few weeks ago, I needed to download a program to check wifi channels on my wireless network, and ended up having to perform a full virus/spyware scan aftrer downloading TWO different programs from CNET's download site. After installing each program, I ended up having my homepage hijacked and dozens of popups appearing offering to fix my computer!
I thought that maybe it was just the first program (slipped by heir radar), but the SECOND one had the same problem. I then went to the publisher's website and found his blog complaining that his program was free of malicious code and that it was inserted by CNET/Download.com AFTER he had uploaded it to the web.
His recommendation is that, if you can't go directly to the publisher's site for a download, File-Hippo is still a fairly clean site.
Please pass this info on to friends and colleagues.

I know that you are correct. I have found this to be very true. The only way that I have found to get around this situation is use the "Custom" option to do the install. This allows me to decline all of the garbage that they want to add to my computer. It has worked so far.
This is not the only website that does this, however. I have found it to be true on Softpedia, also. It was my most trusted until lately.
