Time Machine only shows Finder, I can't see how to get a view of yesterdays Outlook
HI have a MacbookPro 2.53GHz INtel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM 1067MHz DDR3 and am running Office for Mac 2011.
There is a Time MAchine installed and it backs up automatically. In the past I have been able to retrieve emails or documents from Time Machine with no problem. HOwever yesterday I accidentally deleted an email and its not even showing in trash. I wanted to go onto Time Machine and look for it but when I enter it only gives me the Finder window and I can't see how to make it show me Outlook. Does anyone know how to get into the application I want?This is harder than it looks.. you will need to restore the library.

You actually need to recover the files and then see if you can reload it.. but it is likely to mess up your current file.. so you might find this is really messy.

I have given up on computer email.. gmail serves very nicely.. and it is no where near as buggy. Albeit they machine read your mails for ads.. not a big deal to me. -
Using osx snow leopard with boot camp, optical drive keeps ejecting windows 7 disc
Upgraded my late 2008 macbook pro from leopard to snow leopard. Added the max 4GB of RAM and replaced the working 250GB hard drive with a new 1TB hard drive. Rebooted with time machine from external hard drive. Now tried setting up Bootcamp to add a Windows 7 partition, but the optical drive keeps ejecting the Windows 7 disc after it spins for a few moments. The optical drive will read other discs, just not the Windows 7 disc. How do I fix this problem?
you need to install the new bootcamp drivers from windows. boot into windows, insert the snow leopard DVD, open it and follow the instructions.

I have a 5 year old airport extreme. I bought a new one to upgrade for better range. I connected the new one to the internet with a few problems, but a phone call to my internet provider resolved them. With an ethernet cable from the new airport extreme to my iMac, I'm connected. However, none of my wifi devices will connect. They see the network, but it either says "incorrect password" if I'm trying a new network name and password, or it repeatedly asks me to reenter the password if I use the old ones. I reinstalled my old airport extreme and everything works fine. I'm about ready to box up the new one and return it. Any ideas?
It is extremely difficult to fix these issues.. remotely.
If none of your wifi devices work.. that does sound unusual..
Have another try.. This time deal with the COMPUTER only.. leave everything else turned off.
Unplug the Extreme from the router.. reset it to factory.. do this full setup.
Unplug power from the Extreme.. hold in the reset button.. plug in the extreme to power and keep holding in the reset.. 10sec or so the front led should flash rapidly.. release the reset and wait a couple of min.
Now in the computer does the Airport extreme show up under wifi as new device??
Please make sure IPv6 is set to link local only to go further but it should work no matter what the settings are.
No luck clear out all the old wireless names from the computer.. reboot the computer and try again to scan for new wireless devices.
Hold the reset and try again.. it must appear in the wifi to be setup.
No sign of it the unit is faulty and can be returned. -
I recently had to rebuild my hard drive. When I try to sync my iPhone, the iTunes app won't recognize the phone and gives me the option of erasing the content on the phone and syncing to the library that it currently has. I don't want to lose the content on the phone but I do want to add content from the current library. Any suggestions? Or am I screwed?
Two options available to you.
Option 1: If the computer your previous sync is available then you can do itunes home sharing. Transfer the files and then sync to the new computer. Setting up home sharing http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620

Backup to external USB 2TB hard disk. Total backup is about 290GB mostly Photos and software (Adobe, Aperture, very few documents and no games.
Disk was tested by reformatin and copying 50GB of photos that took 25 mins. Reformated and set as Time machine disk and its still gong after 12 hours and saying its got 34 days to go. I can't stay awake that long!
Coputer shuts dow after 15 mins with no input. HOW CAN I COMPLETE A BACKUP??/There is nothing you can do to TM.
But frankly I would give it up. There is something wrong so the chances of this being a usable backup is small.
I am slightly unclear.. you have stated network data.. but I thought this is a USB disk plugged directly into the computer?? Is it something else?
Please indicate the exact setup of the backup disk.
Please show me how it is formatted and is it GUID partitioned?
I have found USB disks can be poor under Mountain Lion.. but work fine in Snow Leopard.. I don't know the reason.. But I think you can stop the backup now..
You stated you did all the steps I indicated.. did that include the verification of the source and destination drive??
Did you load the widget and what is the log showing?
What about trying it differently.. if you want a backup .. do a disk image with superduper.. just so you have a backup..
Then I would try a network backup with the USB disk plugged in and shared to the network from the mini.
You can then do a TM backup to network drive.

The installation wasn’t successful
If you were unable to install Mac OS X, try the following:
Disconnect any external devices you don’t need during installation.
Remove any cards from manufacturers other than Apple.
Try installing Mac OS X again.
If you were unable to install Mac OS X again, choose Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the disk on which you want to install, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. After repairing any problems, quit Disk Utility and then click Continue to try installing again.
If you’re still unable to install Mac OS X, try erasing the disk before installing Mac OS X. Before you erase your disk, try copying your files to an external disk. When you’re ready to erase and reinstall Mac OS X, follow the instructions in the “Restoring your computer to factory settings” section of this document.

Officejet Pro 8600 wireless print option with Mac OSX Snow Leopard?
Hi My 'old' 8600 printer died and I purchased a new one. I did not set up wireless communication with the old printer but am interested in doing so with this new one, or at least having that option.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The installation CD that came with the new printer says it's for OS X v10.6, Lion or Mountain Lion. Is it compatible with my system?

I have multiple gigs of video files, for which I'm considering changing my naming convention. If I rename the files but don't make any other changes, will Time Machine back them up as new files next time? As in, the backup HD would have duplicate full-size files, one with the old name in an old backup and one with the new in the new backup.

Why? Why not let Time Machine work as designed, to protect you best, by doing hourly backups? Since all but one per day are deleted after 24 hours, they don't take up much space, but can really save your bacon if you accidentally change or delete the wrong file (I occasionally get distracted and click "Save" when I mean to click "Save As," for example).

The same thing will happen if you move files or folders; they'll be backed-up again. If you move a folder, all the sub-folders and files inside it will also be backed-up again. But of course only once; if they're not changed, moved, or renamed, they're not backed-up again.
If space does become a problem, you can delete all the backups that were made from the old location, per #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
How do I delete all backups of Time Machine in OSX 10.7.2?
I had some huge photo files (100gb) that were on my computer for a few weeks and have now been processed and deleted. I suspect that Time Machine backed them up on my external hard drive. How can I delete all backups from Time Machine and start with a fresh series of backups?

I do think you should ask yourself if upgrading to Lion is the right course to take.
Snow Leopard is an excellent OS and Lion has literally been frozen out after barely a year. Remember too that some of your apps may not work with Lion (those that have Rosetta, for example) so that could mean more new purchases. Plus you may need to uprate your RAM too.
