Old Laptop would like to run Arch on it

Hi,
I bought a cheap laptop on Ebay a RM A10 specs 1Ghz Amd Cpu 256mb ram 20gb HD... waiting for a power supply at the moment so do not have much more info at the moment.
Will need to source a card for wifi.
Question is would it run Arch? do I need more memory? and is 20gb big enough [mostly will be used to web and mail!]
MrG

I have an old laptop similar to that (1.6ghz processor, 256mb ram, 20 Gig HD). I only have one partition on it and with that setup I have space for a few movies and albums I've downloaded. I've been meaning to put more ram into this one and I'd recommend you do that same. Of course it's not entirely necessary.

i would like to run the most secure version of firefox on my computer, but my computer does not meet the system requirements for the latest version. is there a way i can have the security of firefox 8 and still be able to run it on my old computer. i currently an running firefox 3.6. it is a bit slow, but it is functional.

Currently Firefox 3.6.24 is as secure as Firefox 8.0.1 is. Firefox 3.6.x will continue to get security updates until next spring, although the exact date hasn't yet been determined.
Which of the system requirements are you lacking? <br />
Processor wise you're stuck with what you got, but RAM can be upgraded. WinXP is still supported in all versions of Firefox and will be continued to be supported until Windows drops support for WinXP sometime in 2014.

My ipod touch is currently running ios 4.2.1 I would like to run ios 5 or 6. When I try to update it on itunes, it tells me my software is up to date. Is there another way to upgrade the IOS?  Do I have to go to Settings>General>reset>Erase all content and settings before I can get the newer ios?  If this is the case, how can I ensure all my content is backed up prior to erasing it all. Is there anyway to check to ensure the backup is complete and comprehensive?  THanks!

A second generation iPod touch can't be updated past 4.2.1.

I have mac OS X, Photoshop CC 64 bit and and i would like to run 32 bit plugins.. How may I do this ?

As said already by JJMack, you cannot do that.
Photoshop CS6, CC & CC 2014 only install a 64-bit version on Mac OS.
Photoshop CS5 installs a version that can launch in either 32 bit or 64 bit when you install on a 64-bit version of Mac OS (Mac OS X 10.5 or later). If you are using Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, then Photoshop only installs the 32-bit version.
    Photoshop CS4 installs a 32-bit version only.

  • I have a MacBook - MAC OS X Version 10.6.8 -- I would like to run WordPerfect 9 by Corel Office on it.  Is there any way to do it?

I have a MacBook - MAC OS X Version 10.6.8 -- I would like to run WordPerfect 9 by Corel on it.  Can this be done?

No, you can't run that on Mac OS X; what makes you think you could?
If you want to run Windows software on a Mac, you need to install Boot Camp and Windows, or use other virtualization software such as Virtual Box, VMware, or Parallels to install and run Windows.

Here's a picture of a while loop around part of your code. All it's doing is waiting to write until the user presses the save button. If you need it to do more, explain in more detail.

I would like to run a stock analysis program called Toolkit 6 on my Macbook Pro, but it only works on the Windows platform.  Is there software that allows me to run Windows applications on the Mac?

Yes it's MS Windows! You will need a license of MS Windows (preferable Windows 7) and from there you can decide on the strategy for running Windows on your iMac. You can use Boot Camp (you already have this) or you use virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion. For your situation I'd recommend virtualization software. However for only one program I'd do some due diligence to see if there is a OS X version. You can start with the App store or simply use Google to search.

  • We have 2 computers that need to be wired. We have 2 iPads that need to be wireless. We have 2 floors and would like to run the stereo from a third wireless Mac.  Suggestions, please?

We have 2 PCs (Windows 7)that are wired. We have 2 iPads that are wireless. We will get a Mac Pro to load all our CDs onto it and would like to play music through the stereo system using an airport. We have a wired/wireless router upstairs and the stereo is downstairs.
Would an Airport work with this configuration?
    Thanks.

I have a similar set up to the original poster (cable modem with Airport Express on 3rd floor, iMac on first floor kitchen, wirelessly streaming music to our stereo on first floor living room which also has an Airport Express). We have a good cable connection to our house usually 10 - 30 Mbs, and a strong Airport wireless signal everywhere, but it's impossible to get smooth audio. It works for a while, maybe 10 mins or so, hen drops out, comes back for another 3 or 4 mins, then drops out again.... eventually stopping completely. If I just plonk my iPhone 4 down a few feet from the stereo, I can stream iTunes, or Pandora al night with no problems, no interruptions!!
I thought I'd get a better "boosted" signal by using the Airport Express attached to the living room stereo, but it doesn't seem to make any difference?
What's the solution? Any tips for getting a better audio connection?
    Thanks!

  • Would like to run my update plan by those that have theirs in place

    Hello again,
With the help I've gotten here I think I am finally past testing and need to consider the best way to deploy updates. I've done a lot of reading and understand this facet is different for every workplace so I will skip asking for "best practices"
and tell you what my current plan is. I would appreciate input on if this plan sounds OK or, if not, how I might better deploy.
I've read a number of threads on ADR deployment of updates but because we have a QA environment and many updates are things like service packs that can't be segregated by update type (Updates, Security Updates, etc) without missing other needed updates I'm
thinking the best way would be as follows:
-Select All Software Updates and add creteria to remove expires and superseded updates and add in Product info for our major products (Office 2010, WIndows 7, Wndows Server 2003 and 2008 R2).
-Create Deployment Packages for each of these major product groups and assign to correct Collections.
The above should handle the basic "All Patches" for systems and Office products not up to date from old images, should it not? I understand that if SCCM handles the images they can be updated and that will be something I look for in the
    future.
As far as collections I intend to have a QA Workstations, QA Servers, and then the All Desktop and Server Clients setup. In this way I can assign, when timing is right after testing, the deployment packages to the proper collections.
My next question is when it's time for monthly updates. I'd like to have an ADR like I've read about but again with testing and some updates that would not be able to be issued as they came out (like Service Packs) and some non-security patches that need
applying, such that I cannot limit the ADR to having just the "MS" security bulletin patches as a limiting factor, I think I am going to have to run similar deployment packages, adding the criteria "released or revised within the last 1
month" in order to be able to thoroughly review the patches to ensure it isn't somethign in meed of special treatment like Service Packs.
Does this sound valid? Is it too complicated? Am I missing someting? How might I refine this approach?
    Thanks for your help!

It all depends on what you need, you meaning "business".
You actually can include update classification in ADR rules to get exactly what you need (including or excluding service packs).
Take a look at what Microsoft is saying about updates in general.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc750077.aspx
Once you figure out what you need to deploy, you can configure your ADR rules or do deployments manually each month.
As for the deployment collections, I would stay away from doing all servers, all workstations etc, even after your QA has cleared it.
I know you could have limited downtime window, but if you can, try to apply these updates incrementally (say 5% of all workstations go on Monday, 15% on Tuesday and so on). This way you can avoid an issue, if one arises, that was not spotted during
    QA process.
For servers, you can start with less critical systems etc.
How big is your environment (workstations and servers)?

  • HT6114 I am currently runny 10.6.8 on an almost 5 yr old laptop. Can I run the new maverick ugrade v 10.9.2?

I am using an almost 5 yr old macbook. Operating system is 10.6.8 I received an offer to upgrade to mavericks v10.9.2. Can my current system run/support this new upgrade? Would I leave myself at risk of to the performance of my laptop?

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • 3 Month old laptop performing like its 7 years old

    Hi
My HP notebook is 3 months old but is performing like it is 7 years old.  It is extremely "laggy" and struggling to perform even the simplest of tasks.  I am constantly getting the "not responding" dialogue at top of screen and the mouse curser lags and jolts.  I am not a gamer nor do I download movies or music.  It is only ever used for browsing.    I have done several whole computer scans and found no viruses or malware.  I did a number of system restores, but to no avail.  I then did a "refresh" using the update and recovery section of my pc.  Unfortunately this has not helped.
Has anyone any suggestions as to why this woud be happening? It is still under warranty as only 3 months old and to be honest I just want it gone.  I'm now back to using my old Asus which is 5 years old and performing light years ahead of the HP.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

    Hi T4M,
Thanks for your response.  Yeah, it came with windows pre-installed.  I just opened it up and turned it on.   I am not very tech savvy so I hope I give you the correct information...
    the processor etc is...

    Operating System:  Windows 8.1 64-bit
    4GB
    Hard Drive: HGST HTS541010A9E680
Any suggestions what I should do?

  • I have a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and FCP7 installed I would like to run FCP7 and FCPX on the same computer, is this OK

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009) with Mac OS X version 10.6.8, I use this for video editing with FCP7. I would also like to install FCPX, my operating system is Snow Leopard. Is this OK or do I need to up-grade my operating system. I want to be able to use FCP7 and FCPX on the same Computer. Your advise will be appreciated.

You will see from the hardware spec that the latest version of FCP X requires Mavericks.
The Mavericks spec shows you can upgrade to Mavericks on your Mac Pro.
Ensure you have a bucket full of RAM installed.
