On my Mac Book Air when I open it up the Log In Screen is there but I cannot log in because the rainbow spinning ball is permamently there.  How do I get rid of it so I can log in?

On my ac Book Air I have opened it up and te Log In screen is showing but so is the Spinning Rainbow Ball which willl not go away.  How do I get rid of it so that I can log in?
