On Windows 2012,WMIPRVSE.EXE WMI service leaks memory when registering SMO to SQL Server events

Hi,
I have written an application which registers to events using SMO API.
I have noticed that after some time, suddenly event flow from SQL Server stops. and I can't event shut down my application properly, as StopEvents() method of SMO hangs the shutdown.
After further investigation, I have found out that a spawned process (probably by SQL Server) WMIPRVSE.EXE memory grows rapidly.
As soon as this process reaches about 482MB ~ 500MB memory consumption. I didn't notice any particular CPU peak for this process.
As I manually kill this process, I'm able to shutdown my application properly and even re-register it to events.
I may add that this issue doesn't happen on an regularly updated Windows 2008.
I managed to find this hotfix (the only one for 2012) but it won't install!!! http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2790831/en-us?lc=1033
In an act of frustration , I decided to bypass your process, and write a heuristic mechanism to find WMIPRVSE.EXE which is related to my application, and kill it whenever it reaches the mentioned sizes.
But it's not the answer.
Please provide a proper hotfix for 2012, as you did with Windows 2008, or an answer regarding what is wrong?
simple search reveals that this process was very problematic in 2008...

Adi

Hi Adi,
à
I managed to find this hotfix (the only one for 2012) but it won't install!!! http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2790831/en-us?lc=1033
Would you please let me know detailed edition information of this server 2012? Was it Windows Server 2012 Standard
or
Essentials or any other?
Based on your description, I understand that
KB2790831 can’t be installed in that problematic Windows Server 2012. Would you please let me know the error message that you can get when failed to install the Hotfix? Please perform a
clean boot and check if still can’t install this Hotfix.
Meanwhile, please check if
KB2934016 was installed on your Windows Server 2012? If didn’t install, please install this update rollup and check if this issue still exists.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Justin Gu

  • On Windows 2012,WMIPRVSE.EXE WMI service leaks memory

    Hello all,
In my Windows 2012 9700 server,I have installed LSI provider and I am running associator queries to LSI Provider which further interacts with WMI service which acts as a CIM Object Manager(CIMOM).When I run these queries,I am seeing huge memory
usage increase in the WMIPRVSE.EXE service.
I was browsing through some of the articles and came to know this is a known issue. But Microsoft has not applied this issue to Windows 2012 server.Below are my findings,
Maximum memory usage by the particular host:536870912 Bytes. After which it would crash and a new wmiprvse.exe would come up.I did not change this memory limit because it's not the procedure to resolve this issue.
Can anyone who has already experienced this issue, could guide me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting.
Firstly, I recommend you to use Network Monitor to check the source of the high CPU in WMIprvse.exe:
Using Netmon to figure out the source of high CPU in WMIprvse.exe
In addition, maybe you can enable WMI logging to find more detailed information:
    WMI Debug Logging

  • WMIPRVSE.EXE (WMI) warning alerts in Event Logs

Hi To all. I have one major problem one of my supported Window Server 2008 R2 SP2. I see that  in event logs randomly appears warning message :"Windows Management Instrumentation has stopped WMIPRVSE.EXE because a quota reached a warning
value. Quota: HandleCount  Value: 4099 Maximum value: 4096 WMIPRVSE PID: 4268"
Looked for this topics and KB :
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;958124
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;954563
With no result. Any ideas about how to resolve this issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi Olegmg,
When a quota has been exceeded, there is no specific action required other than reducing the scope or number of operations requested of the provider hosted in the WMIPRVSE process. Event ID 5612 lists the PID of the WMIPRVSE
process that hosted the provider that exceeded the quota.

  • Imapd service "Leak  Memory"

I already have Java Communications Suite 6 Working , but, I have a Leak Memory problems with imapd process.
I have the server with 30 imapd process, 30 mshttpd process, and 30 pop process running to balance the load of the users.
All work fine(the CPU is 100% idle, the RAM is 80% available=6GB) when I access via browser(Chrome,Firefox), too when I access it with the traditional clients IMAP (Outlook, ThunderBird, etc).
The problem is that if one user want to copy(not just view) locally all your emails to your laptops/pc, the imapd process eat more than 3GB(instead of 80MB) of RAM and the system is getting slower.
If the user cancel this process(copy via IMAP all your emails) the process dont freedom doesn't release the memory and the system getting slower.
    Actually my solution is:
    # kill -9 <PID_imapd>
Some times when I kill the process the problem going to other imapd process, so in this case the solution is:
    /opt/sun/comms/messaging/sbin/stop-msg
    /opt/sun/comms/messaging/sbin/start-msg
I think that this problem is a bug but I dont know what is the patch.
May you help me? Any idea?
    My system is:
A X2100 with one socket AMD Opteron 2600Mhz, 8GB RAM, 2 x disks 750GB in mirror with Solaris Volume Manager, Soalris 10 HW 10/08.
    Thanks.

The rest of the imapd process(29) in this moment just load 40-50MB(when those are free).
If we kill the process 16673 the user connect to the next imapd process and the problem persist whit the same patology: eat memory and CPU, and slow the system.
So, we think that is not normal and maybe we need patch the system to solve the problem.
We will to test the 64Bit version in this moment and we will post the results.

  • Data services job failes while insert data into SQL server from Linux

SAP data services (data quality) server is running on LInux server and Windows. Data services jobs which uses the ODBC driver to connect to SQL server is failing after selecting few thousand records with following reason as per data services log on Linux server. We can run the same data services job from Windows server, the only difference here is it is using SQL server drivers provided by microsoft. So the possible errors provided below, out of which #1 and #4 may not be the reason of job failure. DBA checked on other errors and confirmed that transaction log size is unlimited and system has space.
Why the same job runs from Windows server and fails from Linux ? It is because the ODBC drivers from windows and Linux works in different way? OR there is conflict in the data services job with ODBC driver.

  • Error when re-starting an SQL Server Instance from VBA - [SQL-DMO]Service Control Error: Access is denied.

Our Application needs to have the use of the [Named Pipes] and [TCP/IP] Protocols.  To save our Users the hassle of having to enable them manually our application has always done it for them and then stopped and restarted SQL Server.  However
since the advent of Vista and Windows 7, the restart stopped working.  We solved the problem by detecting the failure to re-start and giving Users sufficient instructions for them to do it themselves.  Since this only occurs during installation on
the Server, this approach has not been too much of a hassle.  However we would like to tidy this up if possible. This the VBA code that is causing the problem:
        obj_SQLServerInstance2.Start _
            g_SQL_UseWindowsAuthentication, _
            SQLServerInstance, _
            UserName, _
            Password
This still works when run under XP, but fails under Windows 7 with the Error:
[SQL-DMO]Service Control Error: Access is denied.
Does anyone know how to resolve the problem?

This still works when run under XP, but fails under Windows 7 with the Error:
[SQL-DMO]Service Control Error: Access is denied.
    Hello Brian,
Under Windows 7 you have to run the VBA script with admin permission, a normal user don't have permissions to start/stop services.

  • Can SSIS 2012 execute packages built on 2008 R2 BI for 2008 R2 SQL Server?

We have a query regarding SSIS instalattion on application server. As SQL Server 2008 R2 is getting out of life, DBAs are suggesting to install SSIS 2012. Now our concern is
that our SQL Server DB Server is on 2008 R2, and developers are building packages using SSIS 2008.
Considering we deploy file packages, and backward compatibility, theoretically it shall work. There are 3 things here -
    1. {2008 R2 SSIS Package} ------ Deployed On -------> 2. {Server with 2012 SSIS installation} ------- Connects to ------->  3. {SQL Server 2008 R2 DB Instance}
Any recommendation on this. Would it work? Anything which could cause issue?
As we have to pay for license, do not want be in a situation where we pay for SSIS 2012 installation on server (#2 above) and then realize that there is some issue
    Regards, Amit Gupta

    Hi Amit,
Just as Visakh and hsbal said, there will be no issues as SSIS 2012 will work with standard previous versions of SQL Server packages. But some custom SSIS Tasks can always throw error after upgrading packages from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012.
About this, please remember to do the following things:
Change your custom tasks and components to target the .NET 4.0 Framework in each of the project properties, in the Application Tab, under Target framework.
Update the assembly references in each of your projects to point to the appropriate SqlServer dlls.
Build and copy your project dlls to the appropriate directory, depending on what kind of components you are updating, i.e. Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\PiplelineComponents
Register your components in the GAC.
Close Visual Studio and then reopen; open your SSIS packages and refresh the SSIS Toolbox, by right clicking in the tool box and selected Refresh Toolbox.
Besides, if some of your script task throw errors to you, we can open the script task in VSTA, insert Breakpoint to debug the scripts, then find the root cause. For more details, please see:

  • Windows 2012. Assign RDS service Licensing Server on Standalone Server. Connect to the licensing server on the same server as RDS

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Standard. I wish to run this server as a standalone server using local users as the authentication for RDS and not part of a domain. I have my RDS licenses loaded in RDS licensing service and all license show up
in the Licensing Server.  I get events telling me to connect to a licensing server and I find no configuration tool now to connect to the local licensing service.  It will not let me connect to the licensing service on the same computer.

    Hi Bill,
After referring to your post, we can understand that you are facing issue with licensing service for your RDS Server. As Ryan has provided great article for deploying RDSH server in workgroup mode you can refer that and also I would like you to check that have
you specify a license Server for RDSH server to use. You can perform this setting under
deployment properties of RD Licensing and specify the name of the server and in addition there is registry setting for this under below path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing

  • SCOM 2012 R2 Exchange Correlation Service , we receive almost at every day in the Event log Application the Event720

    HI
Since the SCOM was Upgrade to R2
Almost at every Day, we receive in the Event log application the Event 720 from the correlation service Source MSExchangeMonitoring Correlation
This arrives always around 7:20AM, someday is at 7:19, other at 7:21. It is always approximately at the same hour, but we never have any problem during weekend
    The description of the Event
Exceeded maximum time (15 minutes) to wait for completion of all CorrelateBatchTask threads.
After that the correlation stop to work. At the Same time if we tried to open the SCOM Console on that server we was unable to open it. Also we was not able to open the SCOM PowerShell
And also we cannot from that server to get which server is the RMS if we run get-SCOMRMSEmulator .  (This the RMS Server)
When this arrive, the only thing we found, it to reboot the server or restart de SCOM service, after the Reboot the Correlation begin to work
We got also many Event 714 Critical and after this Event 711 Warning
    Thank

One user reported an issue with the exchange correlation engine after upgrade and said that:
I had issues with the corellation engine after upgrading scom 2012 to R2.
The MomBidLdr.dll version changed in the SCOM directories, and needs to be updated in the:

That seemed to stop the errors for me.

  • Windows 8 attempted execute of no execute memory when troubleshooting attempts to reset wireless adapter, BSOD.

Hey guys. I bought a Lenovo computer that came with windows 8 this christmas, and it runs generally well. I have been having wireless issues recently however, and I can't figure out how to solve it. Being someone who is not tech savvy at all, I decided to
post here because I was tired of putting up with it. The basics of the issue is that my internet has been slow lately. My school that I attend uses a dedicated proxy server to make sure nobody outside of the campus uses the internet. Occasionally, my internet
does not work, even with the proxy server enabled. When I scroll over the wireless indicator down on the hotbar, it does not list my networks, instead just stating "Internet access". If I try to left click it to connect or view my connections, the
bar that usually comes up on the left does not appear, instead freezing the internet indicator. If I try to troubleshoot problems, it detects for a bit, and then decides it wants to "reset wireless network adapter". About 3 seconds after saying
this, the screen freezes and then turns blue with a frownie face. After it compiles some info it says at the bottom, "for more information, look up attempted execute of no execute memory". After that my computer restarts and my internet does the
same thing. When I troubleshoot it, instead this time it states that it "cannot identify the problem". Then, if I try to open 'network and sharing center', it does not open and freezes the wireless icon. I then tried to go into my hardware manager
and just disable and re-enable the broadcom driver. When I hit stop it says it's stopping, then the device manager freezes. I can't click it, it doesn't disable the internet device, and it can't be closed. The weird thing is that after I restart my computer
when this happens, the adapter is disabled. When I re-enable the adapter, the internet works, although it's still slow. Sometimes the computer does not show the frownie face screen and instead skips to the second part, and sometimes it skips the second part
and works after the frownie face screen. That's pretty much a summary of my issues.
If it relates to this at all, my computer occasionally also does not wake up from sleep mode. I close it and put it in my bag. When I open it later, it turns out the computer was on the whole time, but the screen was black. Both the lights from the power
indicators show it as being on, and it's hot because it was using processes and the fan while it was in my bag. Once it does this, the only way to wake it up is by holding the emergency power down, and then restarting it. It's annoying, but I don't know if
    it relates or not.
P.S. If you need information about my specs, or other stuff like crash files or something, let me know what you need and how I go about getting it and I'll post it for you.
    Hopefully you guys can help!
    Thanks,
    Bobash

  • Is there a way to backup a database from Amazon Web Services RDS and restore to On-Premises SQL Server?

Can I take a backup from RDS database and restore it in a normal SQL Server Instance?
I need to migrade some databases from RDS to On-Premises SQL Server.
What is the better way to do that?

    Thanks for your time Alterto,
I also asked to amazon and they answer that:
"Thanks for contacting AWS support, my name is Eli and I will be helping with your question.
Regarding your question - "I would like to know if is there some best practices to transfer a Sql Server database from RDS to and EC2 server"
I would suggest using the SQL Azure database migration wizard - https://sqlazuremw.codeplex.com/.
The SQL Database Migration Wizard, which works perfectly with SQL Server RDS Instance. On your EC2 instance with SQL Server and the migration wizard installed, you can use the migration tool to copy the RDS database to the EC2 instance.
    Note:
-- Change the destination database server to SQL Server under the "advanced" and not Azure.
-- The process does bulk copy all data out of the DB onto the machine running the migration wizard [in this case your EC2 Instance], so you should
    make privision accordingly.
Kindly let us know if you have any additional questions or need any further assistance!"
Amazon using a Azure tool.... funny... =)

  • SQL Server 2012 Cumulative update package 2 (CU2) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 - why only for x86 ?

    Hey guys...
Im a little bit confused... i wanted to download the newest hotfixes for SQL server 2012...
    But the download for :
2983175 Cumulative update package 2 (CU2) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack
is only for the platform: x86 available ... but my SQL server 2012 is running in a x64 environment...
(when i checked the older cumulative updates... they're all only for x86.. can someone tell me why ? )
    thanks and regards,
    Dominic

There doesn't exist an SQL Express "Standard". It's two different editions.
For Express there are three 32bit/64bit editions:
Express, Express with Tools and Express with Advanced Services.
Express with Tools is essentially Express with Management Studio Tools, Express with Advanced Services adds also BI (Business Intelligence) + Reporting Services.
As for where you can apply the cumulative update, on the link you can see this:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2, when used with:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Developer
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Web

  • Windows 2012 R2 Active Directory Domain Services and Remote Desktop services Role on the same server.

    Findings:
Currently, Windows 2012 R2   AD DS role and RDS With Broker services can only seem to coexist properly in a new domain not an existing domain. Any attempt to add to an existing domain causes internal database user access denied issues and any attempt to
adjust rights and circumvent is dubious at best.
The escalation technician said it best. Out of 50 clients that want to do this, they end up not being able to help 5 right off the bat for whatever reason. As for the other 40 they might be able to help by running reports, adjusting rights and trying to add
the roles until it works.  This can end up being a 20 day process. Basically they are playing whack-a-mole with user rights and permissions until something sticks.
We tried creating an OU where any other domain policies would not be inherited to see if that was the issue, a fresh install with different sequence of adding the Roles, no effect.
Given the errors I witnessed when running procmon and then trying to add the roles, the NT System and the Windows Internal database user had access denied issues on 100+ registry keys when trying to add the roles. After that the system is not behaving normally.
The errors displayed almost mirror the errors that would occur on Windows 2012 when those two roles would be added which of course is officially NOT supported on that system.
    This blog needs serious revision:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
This is the excerpt from that blog: Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we published
guidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker.
Microsoft Support was curteous and helpful and they were the ones who advised cutting our losses, which mirrored my hunch after seeing what was transpiring in the system.  They refunded my money for the support call.
For me, it was an opportunity to find out if there was any way to configure Windows 2012 R2 in the Same manner that it was setup as Windows 2008 R2 and lay that to rest. The coexistence is poorly implemented. It is as if there was a reaction from all the deprecation
of bread and butter features such as shadowing in TS and the coexistence of AD DS and RDS to where those features were re-added haphazardly. (I have no complaints on shadowing on Windows 2012 R2 it works, just do not like having to go to server manager to
    use it).
I opted for virtualizing the Domain controller to eliminate the incompatibility issues and that is what I will be doing from now on. I found free solutions for backing up and reporting for virtual machines as well as the suggested procedures for configruing
a Domain controller as a virtual machine on a Hyper-V environment and I will be sticking to those. Thus far the setup has been operational.
I am not allergic to virtualization, but for really small setups it adds additional time and considerations but if that is how it has to be done, so be it. Windows 2008 R2 days are numbered and since we can usually squeeze 5-7 years on quality server equipment,
buying a Windows 2008 R2 setup now is a borderline disservice in my opinion.
Hopefully someone finds this useful and saves some time.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Do you need any other assistance?
Based on your description, you are describing your story of successfully implementing RDS server with AD role and more regarding all RDS related scenario. For shadowing feature, you can use with command also. Below is the syntax to shadow a session.
    mstsc /v:<ServerName> /shadow:<SessionID>
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.
