Once again oci8 on AIX: environment variables
Hallo,
I don't know how I have to set my environment variables, when I
use the oci8 on AIX. Is there someone who could tell me this?
Thanks

Set DISPLAY environment variable -- in DBCA not working at AIX OS
Hi,
I want to create new database in AIX OS and database is oracle 10g:-
When i say DBCA it is giving below error, what should i do?
$ dbca
DISPLAY not set.
Set DISPLAY environment variable, then re-run.
Please help...Pravin wrote:
How to set the DISPLAY environment variable in AIX?Usual format is:
+<host>:<display-number>+
E.g.
export DISPLAY=192.168.0.235:1
Where the host is the hostname or IP address of the client platform running a X-Server. If the X-Server is running locally, then this entry can be omitted.
The display-number is the display number of the X-Server to use. A single X-Server can have multiple displays. E.g. Unix server running a X-Server can have 10 users connected via X-Terminals and will this have 10 displays.
Judging from X-Windows questions asked on OTN, it seems to be a tad complex to grasp for some - especially those from a MS Windows background as X-Windows is very different and also reverses the client-server concept, requiring the X-Server component to be running on the client platform (where the server platform runs the program that is the X-client).
So it is a lot easier to rather use something like VNC instead - supported on most Unix platforms, Linux, Windows and Apple's OS/X.
Simply run the VNC server on the server platform to create a virtual container for running the X-server display. Connect from a client using a VNC client.
As it uses the RFB (Remote Frame Buffer) protocol, it is a lot faster than running the slower and larger X11 protocol required for X-Windows connectivity over TCP/IP. -
LIBPATH environment variable on AIX
My oracle user doesn't have this environment variable LIBPATH configured properly. I'm trying to change it but i can't find where it was set.
I've checked /etc/profile, /etc/environment, .profile and .env but it's not set anywhere.
Yet, when i type set as oracle, i see it set.
I've tried addint export LIBPATH=correctsetting but it's still not updated.
Has anyone seen this or has any ideas as to how i can set this environment variable? (environment is oracle 10g on AIX)
Thanks.Mine is setup when the /var/opt/oracle/orarc102 is called.
The /var/opt/oracle/orarc102 is called within my .profile
Regards
Tim
When use say oracle user are you refering to the ORACLE account itself or another user account?
If you are refering to another oracle user then go through the .profile and the other . files and see what is called during login. You will eventually find where it is setup. Of course if you are refering to the ORACLE account then I don't know what to tell you.

Complete checklist for oracle 11.2.0.4 environment variables on AIX 6
Hi,
Can anyone give me the Doc ID for complete checklist for oracle environment variable 11.2.0.4 on IBM AIX 6 platform (64 bit).
Because we get the following from IBM website, we wonder if any other oracle variable need to make a change, or will impact upgrade correctly on AIX.
“AIX 5.1 uses an environment variable LIBPATH when loading shared libraries. AIX 5.3 uses LD_LIBRARY_PATH
instead. For backward compatibility, AIX5.3 still uses LIBPATH if it is defined.”
URL: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1015835
So we can actually define both -
LIBPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib; export LIBPATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib; /usr/local/lib export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
there are less companies use AIX to run oracle database than those use Unix/Linux; we are planning upgrade oracle database 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4 on IBM AIX (64bit) os level 6, so we need to double-confirm this. FYI.
thank you very much!Hi Abhi: the Doc URL you give me (<e48740>) it doesn't help much. It doesn't tell much about environment variables for oracle. I have the following sample for oracle .profile at IBM AIX 6.1, is it Ok enough for us as basic setting?
vi /home/oracle/.profile
# Oracle variables
umask 022
TMP=/tmp; export TMP
TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
ORACLE_SID=meps; export ORACLE_SID
ORACLE_BASE=/ora_bin01/u01/app/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE
ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/11.2.0; export ORACLE_HOME
TNS_ADMIN=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin export TNS_ADMIN
PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch:/usr/sbin:/usr/ccs/bin; export PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/lib32:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib:/lib:/usr/lib;/usr/local/lib export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
LIBPATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export LIBPATH
CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/jre:$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/network/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/oui/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib; export CLASSPATH
Note:
there are optional environment variables: TNS_ADMIN(optional), NLS_LANG (optional), TWO_TASK (optional)
thank you! -
Changing environment variables not reflected in axis2.
Hi,
I am using axis2(1.2).And my problem is that I am trying to call two or more webservice from the same host .Let me explain.I have a web page .Its take some info to serach and also the parameter to which service to call.Suppose there are two service running (A and B).For A, need the following environment to set before calling :
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore",keyStore);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword", keyPwd);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStoreType",keyType);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStoreType",trustType);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore",trustStore);
System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword",trustPwd);And for B do not required any environment variable.
When I try to connect the B(clear all the environment) after accessing the A its throw the following exception :
org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException:
PKIX path building failed:
sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find
valid certification path to requested targetBut if I restart the webserver and try to call B its working but if I try to access A its failed.
So its seem to me that once the environment is set its not possible to reset it.
So is there any solution.
Thanks & Regradsi haven't used axis2 specifically, but i would imagine that it provides a way to configure that connection information for a specific webservice connection (as opposed to globally for the jvm). a quick google for "axis 2 custom keystore" found this link: http://shivendra-tripathi.blogspot.com/2010/11/enabling-ssl-for-axis2-service-and.html which shows how to configured an axis2 client with a custom keystore ("Approach 2", at the very end of the article). actually, looking again at that article, it may be configuring a system-wide setting (the Protocol.registerProtocol() call looks to be static). this looks better: http://wso2.org/library/1646 .

PATH environment variable, Bash
I want to set a symlink to this path:
/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/django-admin.py
I have tried myself & have failed the last two days. Does anyone have any suggestions on setting up a symlink to this path?
Also should I put it in my bashrc file or my .profile (file)? thanks.Terminal, Unix, shell, etc... questions are best asked in the Mac OS X Technologies > Unix Forum
<http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=735>
ln -s /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/django-admin.py /path/to/where/you/want/the/symlink/to/reside
A symlink is a file in the file system, so once you create it, it is going to stay until you delete it. No need to put this in .bashrc or .profile
Unless you were actually asking about a shell command alias, which is not to be confused with a Finder Alias, as a Finder Alias is more like an symlink, only different, than it is like a shell command alias.
A shell alias would be
alias fred='/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/django-admin.py'
and that you would ideally put in your .bashrc, but .bashrc is not invoked during login, unless you source it from your .profile (assuming you do not also have a .bash_profile, which would get invoked instead of .profile, as bash has rules explained in "man bash" about what initialization files it reads, and which ones it preferes.
As for the PATH environment variable, that would be exported from .profile (again keeping in mind the rules about .profile vs .bash_login vs .bash_profile).
It is unclear whether you want a symlink to django-admin.py, a command alias, or just to put /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/ in your PATH.
Please take any follow up discussions to the Unix forum. -
Environment variables for Java
Hi,
I installed jdk1.6.0_02 from Sun, and set the following environment variables:
export PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:*/home/username/jdk1.6.0_02/bin*
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/username/jdk1.6.0_02/lib
export JAVA_HOME=/home/username/jdk1.6.0_0
I issue the following commands:
which javac
*/home/username/jdk1.6.0_02/bin/javac*
which java
*/usr/bin/java*
why is it referring to */usr/bin/java* instead of */home/username/jdk1.6.0_02/bin/java*
How can I solve this problem under Ubuntu 8.04.
Thank you in advance,
--Blaise

Ok */ust/bin* is needed in the PATH. Why it affected java but not javac then?
Provide an instructive solution or an instructive comment if you have.I should have thought it would have been fairly obvious that it was because javac was not in /usr/bin (and that it would have been just as easy to be certain, i.e. type "ls /usr/bin/javac"), but I guess not.
I also would have thought, that it should be fairly obvious that a search path will always be read in a specific order (after all that is one of the reasons to have one, so that command searches aren't random), and, extrapolating from there, that it should be fairly obvious, considering the problem observed, that that search order was from left to right, but again, I guess not.
Use your head for something other than a paper weight, and maybe you wouldn't need to become either defensive or aggresive, but, once again, that must be something that's beyond you.
Learn how to type "How to configure path environment variable" into Google, and maybe the same would apply, but, once again, that is probably something that's beyond you. -
X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro
Hi
I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
Macbook Pro 17 Mac OS X (10.4.9)Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
The reasons are these:
1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
I've put more discussion of these things here -
Using environment variable in local site folder filespec
Configuration: Dreamweaver CC 2014.1; Windows 7
I have quite a few sites defined in Dreamweaver and would like to define the folder locations using environment variables so thst if I decide to reorganize my disk (again) I can just redefine the variable instead of having to modify each of the site definitions. For example, instead of W:\dw\site\, I would like to specify %dw_root%\dw\site\ (where dw_root is defined as "W:"
Attempting to save a configuration with this filespec fails with the error: The local site folder path must be absolute.
I copied the path from the DW configuration dialog box and pasted it into a DOS window as the filespec of a DIR command to confirm the syntax was valid.
Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work?
Thanks.Very unlikely. DW won't tolerate special characters (%&*~).

I DO need some help here!
I have a C++ program accessing an Oracle 8.0.5 database ( which is set up for american_america.weiso8859p1 as the default language PLUS one more being: brazilian portuguese_brazil.weiso8859p1.
When I log to the server which hosts the executable and try to run the application, I get the error ORA-12505 as soon as I try to connect to the database, but the error message can't be displayed, and instead, my exit routine displays: " Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12505 "
If, alternatively, I log to another server THEN issues a telnet to the the server which hosts the executable and try to run the application, I get the programm to run nicely.
The settings of the environment variables ORA_NLS33 and NLS_LANGUAGE have been coded inside the C++ program (among first things in main) but it seems these settings have no effect in solving the problem.
The server which hosts the application has an AIX 4.3.3.0 operating system.
The server from which I issue the telnet command has an AIX 4.2.1.0 operating system.
What are the things that must be set in AIX in order to correctly access the Oracle database? Where can I get this type of information?
I do apreciate any clues to solve this problem of mine.
Thanks!Sounds like this is a configuration problem:
ORA-12505: TNS: listener could not resolve SID given in connect descriptor
Cause: The SID in the CONNECT_DATA was not found in the listener's tables. This error will be returned if the database instance has not registered with the listener; the instance may need to be started.
Action: Check to make sure that the SID specified is correct. The SIDs that are currently registered with the listener can be obtained by typing "LSNRCTL SERVICES <listener name>". These SIDs correspond to SID_NAMEs in TNSNAMES.ORA, or DB_NAMES in the initialization file. -
UDS 4.0 once again: Could not add "DB11.DBB6" to the response list.
Hi,
once again we have heavy trouble with UDS 4.0 connecting to a SINUMERIK OPC server.
Unfortunately the OPC server does not support browsing. GroupList and TagList returns nothing.
The facts:
- MII 12 on Windows Server 2003
- UDS 4.0 SP1 on same server.
- OPC connectivity has been tested with Matrikon Explorer. Tag has been added manually (remember, browsing not possible).
- Creating UDS instance works. UDS can see remote OPC server and is able to create an instance from it.
- Data server has been created in MII 12 to connect to UDS.
- Connection status to UDS is ok. Can also be seen as Debug file shows query details.
- TagQuery has been created with adding the tag manually (browsing not possible).
When we try to test the query we always get the error message
Could not add "DB11.DBB6" to the response list.
and
No Tag selected
The strange thing ist that, if we use a non existing tag like "test123" then the same error occurrs instead of "No valid tags requested".
Here you can find the debug file of UDS:

The Debug file is from a Windows XP Professional system. But the same thing happens with the UDS installed
on Windows Server 2003 (x64).
The following config variations have been tried:
- synchronous / asynchronous
- Cache mode "None"
- Threading model STA / MTA
Any suggestions?
Regards,
MatthiasHi Mathais,
I assume you have installed the OPC enum services in the same machine where xMII UDS is running.
Also make sure that the browsing mode is set to true in the OPC Server.
We had the same issue...and were receiving the same error...but once we changed teh Browing mode at teh OPC server to true, tag quesries started working....
Hope it helps...

How to use windows environment variable "%appdata%" in TEXT_IO built-in
Hello Sir/Madam,
I'm currently using TEXT_IO built-in package to write data file user's "C" drive in Oracle Forms 6i on Windows XP OS. We are in the process of upgrading the OS to Windows7. This new version does not allow to write to "C" or "D" drive. I was wondering how I can use windows environment variable "%appdata%" in this built-in to write the data file to user's AppData folder?
I would appreciate your help.
Regards,
Vani SontiYou are obviously not familiar with the architecture of webforms. See here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/forms/275632-133265.pdf
I guess you are running your forms locally, so the forms server and the client run on the very same machine. This won't be the case once you run in production, as you will have an application server and clients connecting to the server.
text_io, tool_env and all the forms built ins will be executed on the machine the forms runtime runs on, and in a 3 tier architecture this is the application server, not the client as the real client will run just a java applet which actually just does what the forms runtime on the server tells it to do (or passes client side events like mouse clicks to the forms runtime on the server).
A very simple explanation for the architecture would be that the whole GUI part has been ripped off the forms runtime and put into a java applet; the logic part (the old-fashioned forms runtime) where the whole Forms PL/SQL code is executed communicates with the GUI part (which is implemented as a java applet) via HTTP, so there is no need to have both running on the very same machine.
So if you are writing a file with text_io on c:\dummy.txt this file will be generated on the application server machine as it is executed where the forms runtime runs. If you read environment variables with tool_env.getvar you will get the environment variable from the application server machine.
If you need those variables from your application server then those built-in packages are what you need, but if you need the real client variables there is no way around java in webforms 6i. But the beans should be simple enough to have them written within no time ;)

At command line, what is the best/most direct way to determine the environment variables (e.g. PATH) for a given process ID? Must be able to query for any arbitrary environment variable. PATH is just the first example.
'lsof -a -p $PID -d cwd -F' gets some of it.
But, I don't see a way to get the PATH for the given PID, using lsof.
'ps -Ep $PID' gets some of it.
But, again, 'not comprehensive. It appears to give back only a portion of the 'environment' for the process.
On a number of other Linux/UNIX variants, you can look at '/proc/<pid>/environ'. But, OS X apparently does not use that mechanism.
Newb coming from the Linux world. Please pardon my ignorance. Reading as fast as I can.....You seem to have found the solution on your own, but if you need more you may have greater success posting here.

Setting environment variables remotely doesn't work for Windows 7
Hi,
$RemoteMachineList = 'machA', 'machB'
$session = New-PSSession $RemoteMachineList
Invoke-Command -Session $session {[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("Role",0,"Machine")}
The above is the code snippet which I've tried for setting a machine level environment variable. After executing this code in a collection of XP and Windows 7 machines, when I go and check the advanced settings->system environment variables, I can see
the new entry "Role" in all the machines. But unfortunately, this env variables actually gets set only in XP machines(I did a set command from a cmd prompt/or an echo command) whereas in Windows 7 machines, this doesn't exists even though it
shows up in the advanced settings->system environment variables.
Tried in several machines, only Windows XP is yielding the required result.
Please help.
Thanks in advance !
-AravindThanks Chen, but still the same result.
I'll narrow down the scenario(actually two scenarios) as per the way it's behaving on Windows 7 machines.
Case - 1
1. I do a SetEnvironmentVariable remotely.
2. I go to that remote machine and search in advanced settings -> system env variables window. Dont click on the OK Button. Close these windows.
Result: Yes it is there as an entry.
3. I open up a command prompt and type 'set'
Result: No it is not set.
4. Again open up advanced settings -> system env variables window. Click on the OK Button. Close these windows.
5. Now open up a command prompt window and type 'set'
Result: It is set now
Case 2:
4. I do a system restart.
5. Open up a command prompt and type 'set'
Result: It is set now
Any idea why this is behaving like this(more or less like setting a user level env variable), please ? I've to some way get through this obstacle to advance further. Thanks a lot for the support -
Unix shell: Environment variable works for file system but not for ASM path
We would like to switch from file system to ASM for data files of Oracle tablespaces. For the path of the data files, we have so far used environment variables, e.g.,
CREATE TABLESPACE BMA DATAFILE '${ORACLE_DB_DATA}/bma.dbf' SIZE 2M AUTOEXTEND ON;
This works just fine (from shell scripts, PL/SQL packages, etc.) if ORACLE_DB_DATA denotes a file system path, such as "/home/oracle", but doesn’t work if the environment variable denotes an ASM path like "\+DATA/rac/datafile". I assume that it has something to do with "+" being a special character in the shell. However, escaping "\+" didn’t work. I tried with both bash and ksh.
Oracle managed files (e.g., set DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST to +DATA/rac/datafile) would be an option. However, this would require changing quite a few scripts and programs. Therefore, I am looking for a solution with the environment variable. Any suggestions?
The example below is on a RAC Attack system (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/RAC_Attack_-OracleCluster_Database_at_Home). I get the same issues on Solaris/AIX/HP-UX on 11.2.0.3 also.
Thanks,
Martin

SQL> drop tablespace bma including contents and datafiles;My revised understanding is that it is not a shell issue with replacing +, but an Oracle problem. It appears that Oracle first checks whether the path starts with a "+" or not. If it does not (file system), it performs the normal environment variable resolution. If it does start with a "+" (ASM case), Oracle does not perform environment variable resolution. Escaping, such as "\+" instead of "+" doesn't work either.
To be more specific regarding my use case: I need the substitution to work from SQL*Plus scripts started with @script, PL/SQL packages with execute immediate, and optionally entered interactively in SQL*Plus.
Thanks,
Martin
