One FileVault won't open, programs on other account won't start

My fiancee has had problems on her 2006-era MacBook Pro 15". She has FileVault on her primary account, and one other administrator account she doesn't use. Recently, the computer froze while running, and upon reboot it couldn't load up the primary account (with FileVault). It said something about a read/write error.
This isn't the first time this has happened - we had to use DiskWarrior to fix that same FileVault a couple months back - so I knew the drill enough to load up the other admin account to try to repair things. But this time, some programs (including DiskWarrior and Safari) wouldn't run properly from that other account: they'd show a bouncing icon in the dock for a couple minutes and then shut down with no error message.
I tried running Disk Utility to scan the hard drive, but it freezes the whole computer (meaning I can't even force-quit the program) every time I try.
I'm thinking the hard drive is in pretty bad shape and probably needs to be replaced. Fair enough. But is there any way to salvage some documents from the FileVault-protected account? I have the password and everything for it, but it won't open, and I can't get DiskWarrior or Disk Utility to repair it from the other admin account.

I'm not sure there's a way to recover those files unless you can log into the account. Perhaps the whole drive can be cloned onto an external HDD (e.g. with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) and then the account can be accessed.
FYI, I strongly recommend against using FileFault (intentional misspelling). Since all of the data are stored in a single, large disk image, any file directory issue locks the whole thing up, as you have found.
Once you get things back to normal (one way or another), instead of FileVault, I'd recommend creating a secure disk image (using Disk Utility) and storing sensitive data there. Instructions for that are in this linked kbase article. It's smaller, therefore less likely (statistically) to be affected by directory damage, and personally I don't see the need to encrypt the entire home folder (why encrypt iTunes music, for example).

  • Firefox won't open links from Outlook when FF is started with admin privileges

    OS: Windows 7 64 bit
    I usually start Firefox from a toolbar (PowerPro) which runs with admin privileges. Thus Firefox starts with admin privileges too. Under this condition links in Outlook won't open in Firefox.
    But if I start Firefox with normal privileges the links in Outlook works as expected.

    Under Tools > Options > Advanced look to see if the "check if Firefox is default browser on startup" Check this and then restart FF. If it isn't the default it should ask if you want to make it the default. Choose yes and it should open when clicking links again.

    Linc, the resident dump guru, will probably be along in awhile and provide deeper insights, but here goes for now. I'm seeing an awful lot of warnings and messages from Chrome. Any chance you could lay off that browser for awhile and use Safari in the meanwhile? No red messages anywhere in the listing. Have you tried rebooting into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode to do a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions? (Cause in spite of what your config tag says, the dump indicates you are running a ML kernel)

  • Safari 7/Mavericks won't open PayPal while others will

    Safari 7 on my MBP seems to have a problem with PayPal. It won't open the site and returns the "Safari can't open the page "https://www.paypal.com" because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "www.paypal.com"" message. I have reset Safari, erased cashes, erased history and added DNS servers to the lookup list. My other browsers find it fine, even on the same machine. I can go to my wifes iMac and it finds it fine even with Safari 7. I don't know what to do on this machine. Any suggestions? I haven't changed any security settings recently either and all recent updates have been done.

    Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
    Set date and time automatically
    if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
    from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
    If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
    Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
    In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
    In the Keychains list, there should be an item named System. If not, select
    File ▹ Add Keychain
    from the menu bar and add the following item:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu at the top, select
    When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
    Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings. Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings.
    Step 4
    Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
    Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
    Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
    from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
    Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ Certificates
    There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Step 7
    Reboot, empty the Trash, and test.

  • Post upgrade to Mavericks, applications won't open on main user account but seem fine in another account.

    MBP Mid 2012.
    Upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion. The user account I was using when performing the upgrade now won't open any applications. In another user account on same computer, everything works fine.
    When I click on an application the desktop picture goes blank before returning and nothing happens with the application. I can open folders but nothing else.
    I've tried every fix I can find, but no success yet. I've reset the Pram, repaired disc permissions, re-installed Mavericks over the top, deleted all .plist  files, repaired disk with disk utility etc.
    Any ideas and help would be appreciated.
    Tod.

    Back up all data before proceeding.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Exchange push works, but other accounts won't push or fetch

    On the 3GS, there is a setting for "Fetch new data" on the main e-mail settings screen. The individual accounts (I have gmail, yahoo, aol, Exchange and Hotmail) don't have a setting for this.
    I have set this to "Push" and for the most part, that works for the Exchange account and Yahoo account. However, the Gmail and other accounts stay put until I open their Inbox or refresh all accounts from the Accounts screen. There isn't any way to even set up a timed fetch for these accounts.
    Is this a known limitation? Any workarounds until Apple fixes this (or allows an account-by-account setting for mail delivery method)?
    Aloke

    There is a global Push setting for the iPhone - for email accounts that support push access, and for 3rd party apps that provide push notifications.
    For an email account that supports push access, there is also a setting for the account to disable push access with the account. When disabling push access with an account that supports push access, the global fetch setting will be used, or should be.
    There is not a separate fetch setting by each email account account. There is a global fetch setting for all accounts. For all email accounts that don't support push access, and for a push account with push access disabled for the account, the fetch setting should check each email account for new messages based on the time setting chosen for automatically checking for new messages.

  • I used a different iTunes account on my phone to download apps. Now I have my own, but the apps i downloaded on the other account won't update.

    iTunes keeps asking me for the password of the other account, but it doesnt exist anymore because my daughter changed her account. How do I get my apps to download on MY account?

    The problem is that you do not own the apps purchased under any account other than your own.
    You could potentially use the apps from another account, but you will not be able to update them on your iPhone.  The best way to try to use those apps would be to use iTunes on your computer to sync your iPhone (and hold all the apps), then, in iTunes on your computer, do Store > Authorize This Computer from iTunes' menu and enter the other account's Apple ID and password.

  • Firefox won't open links from other programs if already running

    I've seen this reported many other places, but none of the solutions have worked. I am running Firefox v33.0.2 (current as of this message) on Windows 7 64-bit (fully updated). I did the following:
    1. Completely deleted my profile;
    2. Uninstalled Firefox, then manually deleted all remaining files on the system pertaining to Firefox and rebooted;
    3. Gone into the Windows "Default Programs" control panel (DPCP) and told it to make Internet Explorer the default (giving it all of its defaults);
    4. Downloaded a fresh copy of the installer and installed Firefox 33.0.2;
    5. Let the installer set my default browser to Firefox;
    6. Tested link opening behaviour (see below);
    7. Let Firefox set itself as the default browser when it asked me;
    8. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    9. With Firefox not running, gone back into the DPCP, and had it set all of Firefox's defaults;
    10. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    11. With Firefox not running, set Internet Explorer to the default via the DPCP, then back to Firefox;
    12. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    13. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in safe-mode;
    14. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in normal-mode with a new profile;
    The observed link-opening behaviour:
    - Internet shortcuts (i.e., actual shortcut files on, say, the Desktop) open in Firefox without issue whether or not Firefox is already running. When this approach is taken, no additional firefox.exe processes are created. The process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird open correctly if Firefox is not running: one new firefox.exe process is created, I get a new Firefox window and the link loads correctly. The firefox.exe process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird yield the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" message if Firefox is already running. In this case, I see a second firefox.exe process created. Per Task Manager, the new process has the command-line arguments '-osint -url "FOO"' where FOO is the URL I clicked.
    From these observations I believe that the link hand-off behaviour is broken. I use a single profile using the as-installed shortcuts.
    Intitial version: 33.0.2
    Update: Updated to 33.1, still broken.

    Under Tools > Options > Advanced look to see if the "check if Firefox is default browser on startup" Check this and then restart FF. If it isn't the default it should ask if you want to make it the default. Choose yes and it should open when clicking links again.

  • Despite everything, Firefox won't open on my computer account, but will on others.

    I had installed the new firefox 28, after which it all seemed good. But when I later went back onto my computer firefox would not open despite the amount of times I clicked it. I tried 'safety mode' as well. Neither open anything and doesn't appear in task manager. However, firefox options opens. But there's nothing useful on there.
    Firefox works on the other computer accounts, just not mine.
    I've restarted the computer numerous times and I've tried uninstalling and installing it. Nothing.
    And nothing has come up on an AVG scan.
    Help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
    Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 28: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
    *Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
    Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
    Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
    If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Air installed but won't open programs such as Elements Inspirational Browser

    When I try to open a program that needs Air, the license screen pops up, I check agree and then nothing happens, cannot open program

    Thanks for the reply. Well I have made some sort of progress, It was not playing ball so I went into start>control panel>uninstall a program and tried to uninstall it but it said that only installed programs could be installed? So I managed to uninstall it by deleted all the files in the c>programfiles>adobe>elements8 etc. I then put the disk in and the serial number was already in there rather than me enter it? It went through the install process only then to say 'rolling back' and is then removed everything and said that the installation process had been interupted and for me to try again. So then I did a disk clean up and restarted the PC. Once restarted I then put the disk in the CD drive and away we go again. This time like the first time it asked me to enter the serial key into the box and it goes through the installation process. Success it then works BUT after coming out of it and going back into it literally 10 minutes later it says 'our records indicate that this serial key has been used already to set up Elementson two other machines which is the maximum allowed. I have 3 options 1) adobe can check the serial key again as I have deactivated from the other PC and Adobe will validate this 2) I have a different serial key or 3) 30 day trial.
    The person I bought it off said they had deactivated it from thier PC
    Would the earlier problems have caused the software to activate on my PC but then after I deleted it, it still thinks that its activated so its used up 1 licence or would the previous issues have no bearing and the seller has sold me a copy thats had both licences used ?

  • Project won't open in RH8 - Other projects open fine

    I am using RH HTML 8.02.208, running on Windows XP Professional,  I have a project I am unable to open.  I am working on my local machine. When I attempt to open this project, RH opens, then stops at, "Loading TOC."  My two co-workers are able to open this project without any problems (we zip the file back to the network after working with it).  I am able to open other projects on my local machine without any problems - this one is the only problem.  I have scoured the forums and tried the usual tricks:  Renaming the .cpd file, deleting the .cpd file, opening with .hhk file, etc.  Does anyone have any inkling as to why I cannot open this project, but my co-workers can, and I am also able to work with other projects without problems?  I would appreciate any direction from the forum.  Thanks!
    TW

    See what happens if one of your co-workers logs onto your machine with their logon.
    If it works for them, then it could be something in your profile. However, I would expect that to affect all projects. Anything is worth a try though.

  • HT6065 I have unresolved issues with Mavericks mail. When receiving identical emails in different accounts if I open in one account it automatically appears as open in the other accounts.

    I have 3 email accounts on my mac. Often more than one account will receive the same email. If I open the email on any one account it appears as opened on each account that received the identical email. This problem only began with the installation of Mavericks. I have contacted Apple phone support and removed each account and then added them again. The problem persists. I have talked with several other friends who have the same complaint. This is particularly annoying as these accounts have different users. Is there a fix? Thanks.
