Online Oracle Backup to disk
Hi,
I am trying to run an online backup of oracle through db13 to disk on netweaver 710, however, there is no option to set the backup to disk that I can see. Is there any parameters that needs to be set in order for this to run, or am I missing something obvious?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jay
as we are having problems with an external backup implementation Backup exec 11d will not run an online oracle backup fully we have been told that there is a problem in the software and we are waiting for a hot fix to come out to resolve this, I would like to set up schedules in db13 to backup to disk whilst this problem we have is not resolved. is there a way or is brtools the best option?
Thanks again for your help.
Jay

Problem with online split backup, database oracle
Hello,
we use for backup our SAP system online split backup, our database is almost 3TB big. Backup is functional but sometimes (4x-5x per month) backup fail with error bellow. If i understant this problem correctly brbackup lost connection to oracle after split disk system and cant stop backup mode in database and backup failed. How can i solve this problem? Exist some parameter for brbackup for reconnect to db when brbackup lost connection? Thanks for your help!

Backup FAILEDHello,
in note 534729 is nothing about ORA-03135: connection lost contact only error ORA-03114 which refer to the note 335199 and in this note in nothing about ORA-03114 I want to say two things: this two oracle errors (ORA-03135 and ORA-03114) are not in alertSID.log on db server or in syslog on backup server. This error are only reported from brbackup which is running on backup server which is "client side". We don't have problem with connection from work processes on all instances to db server, we have only problem with brbackup which lost connection after split disk system. How i say this problem occurs only sometimes. I was tested network connection from backup server to db server via niping a this is result:

And anohter question is in DB13 Calander --> Schedule an action pattern maximum I can backup only 1 month redo logs. But I have 3 months redo log files are there. How can I back up those files.
Our environment is SAP R/3 4.6C, windows 2003 and Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
Please some one help me on this.

SatyaUpdate your BRTools. They are very old.
Check that your DB is in archive-log-mode. If no enable it.
testing backup
- run a online backup
- run "sqlplus / as sysdba"
- SQL> alter system switch logfile; ... this switches the current online log... a new log will written to oraarch.
- run a archivelog backup
... now you should have complete db-backup with minimum 1!!! archive log.
Now you can delete old redologs from oraarch.
If this doesn't work and your database is in archive-log-mode:
- shutdown sap and oracle
- MOVE all redologs from oraarch to a other location manually... no more files should be on oraarch
- run a offline backup
If the offline backup was running successfully you can delete the prior moved redologs. The backup is consistent and the redologs will no more required.
- start oracle and sap
Oracle should now write new redologs to oraarch. Test online backup!

Hello Everyone,
We are currently using Backup Exec for Windows 11D to perform an online backup of our 4.6C system to tape. Since we are moving towards a 24x7 operation, we purchased a new server and storage array with hopes of achieving better transfer rates backing up to disk rather than tape.
Our technical details are as follows:
SAP R/3 4.6C server:
HP380
Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 32-bit
Oracle 10.2.0.2
Db 320 gb
Backup Exec Server:
HP380 G5 64-bit
Backup Exec for Windows 11d with R/3 agent 64-bit
Latest BE build and hotfixes applied
Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 64-bit
Target drive for backup files:
HP MSA60 Storageworks array
12- 750gb SATA drives in a raid 6 configuration
Our tests have been frustrating and disappointing. To our super dlt tape drive we are able to backup our 330 gb system at approximately 2,500 mb/minute or about 150 gb an hour. To disk, we are getting anywhere from 250 mb/minute to 1,350 mb/minute...half speed at best or much, much worse What seems to happen is that the disk backup will start running at near tape speed. But the longer the backup goes, the slower the backup becomes.
I have tried pre-allocating the .bkf files ahead of time. To pre- create a 100 gb .bkf it takes about 2 hours while the backup idles until the file creation is complete. While not an ideal runtime, I can live with it if the backup would run faster than tape once the file is created. But always the "same slowdown as it goes" seems to occur. When I don't pre-allocate the files and allow the file to grow as the backup runs, the backup will inevitibly hang or crawl at less than a couple of hundred mb/minute.
I'm sure that disk fragmentation is adversely affecting us. But even after we defrag the drives the same thing will occur.
We have a ticket open with Symantec but so far they have not been of much help.
Is anybody using Backup Exec for Windows to backup their SAP on Oracle system to disk? And what db size and backup speed are you achieving? Are there certain settings you find that will improve the backup speed? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
RichHi!
I see at least two possible reasons:
1. Is a virus scanner running on your Backup Server?
2. Has the network interface from R/3 to the disks enough bandwidth?
Hope this helps.

Hello,
iam running into a strange problem while doing a backup via Oracle Enterprise Tool under Oracle 11g:
1. Login: sys as sydba
2. Backup Setting are on "Image Copy"
2.1 Keep most generally default settings
2.2 Test Disk Backup successfully
3. Schedule Backup
3.1 Whole database
3.2 Full Backup
3.3 Online
3.4 Disk
3.5 One time
4. Waiting until orcl is ready and backup job is succeeded
5. Altering the database
5.1 e.g. filling an empty tablespace with tables
5.2 or changing an existing database table content through a database tool (e.g. DVisualizer)
6. Perform Recovery
6.1 Recovery Scope: datafile
6.2 Restore datafile
6.3 select the afected datafile
6.4 the most recent backup
6.5 restore to default location
6.6 Submit job und wait till succeeded
From now on the problem starts:
- If i am looking now at the datafile i can see the status = Recover. I can access the tablespace, but not my data (datafile)
- Looking at the function "Perform Recover" => the Oracle Advisor is recommending a Recovery
- Performing the Recovering => I can afterwards access the tablespace, but there is not the state i have backuped before and i wanted to restore
What iam doing wrong here?
Please advice.
Any help is appreciated.
If you have any guideline how i can easily do a simply Oracle backup it would be helpful as well.

Edited by: Macgator on Aug 25, 2009 9:54 AMIf I understand you correctly you performed a COMPLETE recovery, rsp. EM triggered this. Do you want to get back the state of the database BEFORE the changes? Then you must restore/recover incompletely, just before the point in time the changes were done.

Is there anything related with the expiration period as i had made changes withthat too.
Kindly suggest what needs to be done?
Regards,
Radeesh VHi Radeesh,
Pls check the following
1)The file to be backed up cannot be read. this can be due to hardware problems on the disk on which the file is stored.
2)The file to be backed up cannot be written to the volume. this can be due to hardware problems with the volume or the backup device.
3)The backup device is not responding, for example if no volume (tape) was inserted in the backup device.
4) The input or output file cannot be opened. The operating system user is experiencing authorization problems.
5) The physical end of the tape was reached. However, since a parallel backup is performed or the option -c force was used, cpio cannot request a cpio continuation volume. The tape size (parameter tape_size) must be reduced.
Hope this is useful

SAP & Oracle Backup Integration
Hi,
Have Oracle 10g as backend for database & Legato Backup Software has been installed on the server. Could anyone please let me know that if i use DB13 for taking online & offline backups how would it integrate with the Legato Backup Software & is there any special licences required for integration with SAP. Hoping to get a reply soon...Hi
For Oracle Backups the preferred backup method is RMAN. I suggest you read docs for more information. Try focusing on incremental backups as you suggested space constraints.

Hi
I want to take Redo log backup on disk. what changes i have to made in init<SID>.sao file.
Regards
VikramHi Vikram,
If you use brtools then even without parameter change in init<SID>.sap also you can take backup. You have to provide media as disk at the time of backup then the backup will be stored in the default ....../<SID>/sapbackup.
You you want to take backup to some other place then you have to change the parameter
archive_copy_dir=<dirctory where you want to take the backup>
But if you want to take using db13 then you have to change the parameter for backup media to disk
backup_dev_type = disk
archive_copy_dir = /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup

OS: AIX 5.2
Oracle DB: 10.1.0.4.0
We have Oracle Database running on AIX box.
How could I know about any backup activities?
I have just joined this project.
Consultant went for holidays.
Is there any way to find that any "Oracle backup" is in process via cron job or any other process?
Regards,
DNwhat is your conclusion from the below command?

Approximate time for Taking Oracle Backup
Can you guys tell me how can I guess
1.what time should be taken for a Oracle database's full export backup ?
2.what time for a full online Physical backup ?
3.what time for a full offline Physical backup ?
We can see the size of the associated datafiles of the database from dba_datafiles. We have only that clue and the database is residing on an AIX box.
Any good idea will be appretiated.
Also please give me the idea on which factors the time for backup depends. And how it can be done in good speed.Might be that sac-Pune's timing information is wrong. But he could understand my question and tried to answer with a case study. Ok I really tried to get the answer from a person who has good hands on experience. And who has handled oracle backups on different hardwares and also different OS.
I know that the backup timing depends on the size . Suppose we take a case study
Environment parameters:
1. Database size: 100 gb
2. Hardware/OS : IBM AIX
3. Memory : 4 GB
4. Number of CPU: 4
5. Oracle version 9.2.0.7
1.what time should be taken for a Oracle database's full export backup ?
2.what time for a full online Physical backup ?
3.what time for a full offline Physical backup ?
Can any one give me the approximate timing for those ? 30mins plus minus will be accepted.
Can we deduce any formula on backup timing as 3 environment parameters are numeric.
Is there any proportionate relation in timing of Export backup and Online physical backup?
or
Is there any proportionate relation in timing of Online physical backup and Offline physical backup?
or
Is there any proportionate relation in timing of Old Online physical backup and RMAN method physical backup?
I know that oracle backup timing depends on many factors. But again it is a bookish answer. In my original post I wanted to know 'which factors'?
I also requested to give me some thumb rules how backup can be fast.
I recently joined a new organisation where the database size are huge. But I would have to create some emergency 'Change Requests' on Oracle backups. Discussing with Old DBAs and prior testing in test environments with same volume of data as in production is not possible at this point of time.
