OnLocation CS5 fails to record Canon HV30 HDV footage

Hi Guys,
I've recently upgraded from CS4 to CS5 and am running into problems with OnLocation and HDV video capture from my Canon HV30 (yes, it's not the best camera in the world... but it's what I have to work with currently).
Essentially anytime I try to hit the record button in OnLocation while my camera is in HDV mode (or HDV30, HDV24) no recording is started in OnLocation.   However, if I'm in DV mode I'm able to successfully capture video from my camera.  In CS4 I had no problems at all with HDV capture.
I've tried this on my laptop (which also shows a WebCam as input) as well as my desktop (which shows a TV Tuner as an additional input) and both produce the exact same results.
Currently I'm just planning to roll back and use OnLocation CS4 since it actually worked for me... but I wouldn't have expected this to be a problem in CS5.
Does anybody have any idea's to try?
Thanks,
Ben

I had the same trouble with a Canon XH-A1 HDV camera. Here is how I fixed it:
Open Adobe Premiere.
Create an HDV Project. I doesn't matter what kind (1080i60, 1080f30, etc.).
Open the "Capture" function (PCs: press F5; Mac, something like "file" "capture").
In the top right of the Capture window, click the "Settings" tab (next to "Logging").
Under the "Capture Settings" section, click "Edit"
For the "Capture Settings" menu, select "HDV".
Click "OK"
Close the capture window.
Close Adobe Premiere. (Save the project if it asks you).
Now open OnLocation.
Select the appropriate camera (i.e. a Canon camera instead of your Web cam).
Capture away.
I'm not sure if it matters that your Premiere project be the same type (1080f30 vs. 1080i60) as your camera settings.

  • FCE 4 with Powerbook G4 with Canon HV30 HDV Camcorder

Just enquiring if it will be possible to work together a combination of Powerbook G4 with memory of 1.25GB and 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 Processor, together with FCE 4. Also adding into the mix the new HDV Canon HV30.
Have previously been using an SD camcorder with the G4 and iMovie HD to produce a few movies/DVDs, but now want to upgrade to the Canon HV30. I am concerned that the Canon may not be compatible with using the iMovie HD, so am considering FCE 4, but am also concerned that this may not run well on the G4 and may also not run together well with the Canon.
The G4 is still fine so don't really want to have to buy a new laptop as well as a new camera.
Am a bit new to all this so any help/suggestions much appreciated.

FCE 4 will work well on your computer ........ look at what I'm using.
The only slight problem is that you may not be able to access the new FxPlug filters but as many of them are like the old FxScript ones, it shouldn't be too much to do without.
I can't comment on the camera though I would have thought it to be OK. HDV may be a bit of a strain with your old Mac.

  • IMovie 09 versus FCE 4 for editing Canon 25f HDV footage

I have two Canon HDV cams. I film 25f (I'm in PAL land). I have used iMovie 06 with no problems for DV editing via this old PowerBook, but for HDV I need more guts so am about to buy an iMac.
I have just purchased Steve Mullen's excellent "The Ins And Outs Of iMovie 09" and note with disquiet his comments to the effect that later versions of iMovie 09, and a new iMac comes with version 8.0.3., will treat Canon 25f (and 24f) as if it were interlaced footage. As a consequence those who require the best possible edit, say to produce a BD, will have to avoid all but the most rudimentary special effects.
I gather that this is in part (or wholly) down to Apple's presumption that those using iMovie 09 aren't bothered about " quality hard copy portable media" and simply wish to flit home movies around the internet or watch them on their " Macs".
Given that this negates the visual quality provided by HD in its various guises, does FCE 4 avoid these limitaions of iMovie 09?
    Ron

Thanks but not an answer to my question!
I appreciate that picture quality is determined by the camera, the lens, whether DV/HDV/FullHD/Progressive/Interlaced etc and not least by the cameraman/woman's skills.
In addition, unless I've got something very wrong, the NLE system will, to a variable extent, via compression/expansion of the original source material during the editing process, degrade the final edited images so that they will never be exactly the same as those input to tape, smart card, hard disc whatever at the filming stage.
I would like to know whether such "image degradation" is the same whether one uses iMovie 09 or FCE.
(I think I am right in saying that FCP provides the least "image degradation" of all the Apple NLE systems.)

ps there is nothing particularly complicated in filming birds. Long lenses are a must, as is a good tripod (my recently purchased Geman video head costs as much as FCP) and good knowledge of the subject matter i.e. birds and how they are likely to behave. Problems include camera movement, wind is a nightmare, over/under exposure, and focussing difficulties.Everything bar white balance is manual on my XLH1. Birds as well have a habit of not keeping still.
Editing for me ought to be straightforward. No fancy FX but a need for good dissolves cutaways and the like. A high proportion of my clips are about 10 secs. in duration.

  • Can't Import HDV 24p with Canon HV30

So I have the common and very low budget Canon HV30 HDV Camcorder, which has the ability to shoot in 24p. The only options I have when importing footage from a tape in Pr are HDV or DV, even though the Sequence format is HDV 1080 24p. After importing, the clips are at the standard HDV 1080 60i instead. Is there a way to capture the footage with the correct frame rate, or do I have to do a pull down removal in After Effects? :(

"Not all of them offer a recording format that can do proper pulldown removal, though Josh. The Panasonic 24p mode is to be edited in a standard 30i preset. Only the 24pA mode offers a pulldown that can be properly removed for editing in a 24p preset."
Jim I know the difference between 24p and 24pa, sounds like Harm doesn't though explain it to him. All I was trying to get across is: Just because a dv tape can only record 60i doesn't mean you can get progressive frames from it.
I did a google search and there a ton of info about dv30 and 24p. The whole point of that camera is that it shoots 24p, it's cheap and a lot of indie people use it to shoot shorts and even features. There's whole websites about that camera because it can shoot 24p. Click below.

  • Interlaced frames after using Apple directions for Canon HV30 24p

I have an Canon HV30 HDV video camera and clips that have been recorded using its 24p mode. I'm using the instruction Apple has given to remedy this type of footage in Compressor and output to Pro Res:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410?viewlocale=en_US
I've tried this method a couple of times and carefully also. Everything seems to work well other than the fact that I am getting interlaced frames on the last one or two frames of each clip. Sometimes it's the beginning of the clips. As they are supposed to, clips are changing to 24p and when I step through a clip frame by frame everything looks fine, except for those last couple frames. Other methods, like using JES Deinterlacer, do not produce these distorted interlaced frames. However I would prefer to use Compressor. Could it be that I changed some setting or preference in Compressor a while back that is affecting these clips right now?
    Please help!
Once again, using Final Cut Studio 2 and a Canon HV30 with 24p clips.

    Hello,
I experienced the same thing. But I feel that the first second or two of any clip is not useable, when
editing I have never needed every last frame.
This is not much of a help to you. I think it has to do with the mysteries of HDV, Long GOP, and 2 t0 3 pulldown and the complex post processing that must happen to yield 24 full frames.
    Good luck, Tom

  • Canon HV30 Capture Setup

For information only (not a question). Several posters have complained about the capture of HDV from a Canon HV30 in FCE. Their complaint is that when connecting the camera via firewire only a few seconds of video is captured before ‘End of Tape’ is encountered and capture stops. Here is my solution. I have a very modest system (iBook G4 using OSX 10.4.11 with a 1.33GHz processor). I run FCE 4.0.1 on the internal hard drive and capture the HD video to an external 1TB LaCie Big Disk extreme+. I use the Easy Setup: Format HD; Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 and then use File > Capture to capture video from the Canon HV30 HDV camera*. The critical factor is to connect the external hard drive (LaCie in my case) to the system using the USB 2.0 connection and the Camera to the system via Firewire.* I have imported several one hour tapes (60GB each) without any problems. New clips, of course, are produced at camera scene changes but the entire tape is captured. My system runs behind the camera about 65% when transcoding the video to the Apple codec. I reconnect the external drive via firewire after the capture for editing. Hope this helps someone get connected.

You mentioned the size limit issue. I have an hour-long video shot on HD on the HV30. I capture it on FCE (no problems on my end with this) and it ends up a 30 GB file before I can even start editing. I give the same tape to my friend with a PC and he pulls out an unedited ~ one (1) GB file. Is this size difference a PC vs Mac thing where I'm dealing with the Apple Intermediate Codec and he doesnt't have to, or am I missing a simple conversion step somewhere between capturing, editing and exporting that I need to do in order to end up with a smaller movie file? I've found that trying to edit and export a 30GB simply takes too much time and I'm sincerely hoping there's a way to end up with a movie still HD without loss of resolution. Or is there some other reason I'm not thinking of?

  • Quicktime - New Video Recording using Canon HV30 - Codec?

I'm using Quicktime Pro 7.4.1 with a Canon HV30 connected via firewire. In Quicktime preferences pane, the HV30 is the video source with "Device Native" as the Quality setting. Though, I can't see a preview in the Quicktime window while recording, it does appear to record footage. When I stop the recording, it says that I don't have the codec to view the footage and sends me to the Quicktime plug-in page on this site, but I have no idea what I need.
Considering some of the codecs (if not all of them) cost money, I'd rather not buy something that won't fix my problem. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: Oh yeah, the camera is set to HDV 1080i60 video standard. When I switch the camera to SDV, the Quicktime preview returns and everything works as expected.

I am able to choose the PS3 eye from Quicktime preferences and the video screen will show up with video from the PS3 eye (so I know that Quicktime recognizes the cam). But the error dialogue box appears immediately.

I have not, but I do not use PS3 eye. If it is a "UVC" (usb video class) device, it should work with any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later _without additional software drivers_. Some unnecessary drivers can conflict with your Mac's software.
If desired, you can remove the file macam.component from /Library/QuickTime and restart Mac to see if the PS3 eye can work with QuickTime without the additional driver.

  • CS6 fails to import Canon .mxf files. In CS5.5 it works always great.

On CS6.01 I can not import Canon mxf video footage. There is always import failure message window. Same result if I copied CF Card to Hard disc.
On CS5.5 it works always great. I have both premiere versions on same computer:

On CS5.5 it works always fine, no problem! Same result on my notebook, I installed both versions CS5.5 and CS6.01, on CS6.01 it never works.
    Any idea?

CS5.x is obsolete software and is no longer supported by Adobe ever since CS6 was released.  The last version of the Camera Raw plug-in to run with CS5.x was ACR 6.7.1. There will be no further updates for CS5.x.
You need to look for, download, install, launch and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 on each batch of raw files that cannot be opened in ACR 6.7.1.

  • HDV noob about to buy a Canon HV30 - can I edit in Prem Elements3?

I love my Elements 3 and have never seen the need to get a new version. If I buy a Canon Hv30 am I going to need new software?
    Thanks

The program, in my opinion, doesn't do a very good job of downsampling. And it can overload your computer trying.
But you can downsample to standard DV from your camcorder and capture that over FireWire into Premiere Elements. (Look for the DV Lock option when you go to output.) The results should look terrific!

  • Adobe onlocation cs5

I have purchased the Mater Collection CS5 for PC. I recently migrated to Apple with Master Collection CS6(MAC). I am missing ONLOCATION. Prelude is only part of my solution. I need live recording to control video via scopes. Do you have a solution? Or is there a way to carry over the PC Onlocation cs5 for mac? in other words is there a way to use the PC license to activate onlocation on mac? Thanks

On my Mac book pro i am running CS6 and On Location CS5. I have no problems streaming live to my mac book pro to my Canon XL-H1 via firewire 3pin to usb800. You can not however stream in the HDV setting on the camera. Adobe On location can't handle streaming High definition footage even High definition video.

  • Best Settings using the new Canon HV30 and Final Cut Express HD v3.5.1?

My wife presents programs at schools and uses digital movies that we make and edit as one of her media materials.  We want to present higher quality videos that look more film-like. I am hoping that the combination I described above will enable this improvement. In the past we used a Canon ZR20 and iMovie HD and put these on DVD's that were then played on a MacBook Pro with with QuickTime or iDVD hooked up to an Epson PowerLite projector.
I am now the proud owner of a new Canon HV30 and Final Cut Express HD3.5.1 (had FCE for a while so know how to use it). From my research, though, it looks like FCE will not be able to handle CINE MODE recording in combination with 24fps progressive frame rate [HDV(PF24)] which would allow the enhanced effect of the Cinema Mode. I can't justify the cost of Final Cut Studio 2 so I am hoping that the new [HDV(PF30)] will allow me to more easily edit in FCE.
Does anyone know if this is true and if so can please tell me the settings that I need both on the camera and in FCE to get the best quality movie that can played directly from my MacPro using QuickTime or iDVD or from a DVD in the MacPro using the iDVD player. I won't have the opportunity to always play the videos directly from the camera to an HDTV because of the school setting and the need to use a projector.
I know this is a lot to ask for, but I am sure that it will come up again and again as more people purchase this new camera. Thanks for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Lou Hosta

Without totally repeating myself with my post to MaccyLeopard, I haven't shot any footage yet. After doing a lot of reading I think I confused myself more than helped myself as far as settings go. So if you remember from my initial post I am asking for advice and guidance primarily on camera settings with the HV30 that will be used in a classroom (artroom) setting and then edited using FCE HD v3.5.1. I wish I was the type of person that could jump right into using a new piece of equipment but I like to get the advice of others beforehand. That way I'm not always questioning myself as to 'whether or not is this the best I can get'. I also am wondering if the 30fps frame mode would be the best to use in the classroom setting? From my reading, this mode should allow more light onto the tape allowing me to shoot in conditions with lower light levels that are typically found inside? Finally, is FCE HD able to edit this new 30 fps frame mode of the HD30? I've heard that FCE HD can't handle the 20 fps frame mode.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
    Sincerely,
    Lou Hosta

  • ProRes422HQ with a Canon HV30 and Final Cut....

I'm shooting with a Canon HV30 in HDV24p Cinema Mode. When interfacing to Final Cut Pro, my understanding is that the Cinema Mode records at regular 29.97, but with the look of 24fps. FCP crashes when I try to import it as ProRes422(HQ).
Can anyone please enlighten me as to what sequence settings I should be using to edit an HD movie, combining old home movies that are 720x480 alongside the HD footage? This is for a high end customer who wants the best quality possible (with reasonable render times and work loads on the CPU).

For the Canon VIXIA HV30 If you set cinema mode up correctly on the cannon your shooting in 24fps or 24p
Try using 1080i/24p setting for easy setup. You can get there by going to easy set up. Then chosing:
    Format:HD
Rate:(all rates) from the "all rates" drop down chose 1080/24p firewire basic. Not sure on this.
I just got the camera and noticed that when I select the "firewire basic" option I have issues.
I have been using the: HD 1080i/60 as that is what cannon mentions that HDV is being encoded at.
Hope that helps. I plan on shooting some 24p clips soon and will post my results.

  • Canon HV30 and iMovie

I am going to be teaching a high school film class next year which contains a production element. This is not my area of strength so I am trying to learn as much as possible and pick the right equipment. After much consideration, I am looking at buying the Canon HV30 because it has jacks for both an external mic and headphones, and records to miniDV, which makes sense for us in high school. However, I am worried about the system requirements to edit High definition video, as the Macs we have at school are Emacs and about 4 years old. I can definitely buy portable hard drives to hook up to these computers but I'm wondering if that will be enough, and if so, how much hard drive I should buy. Also, I would like to use an older version of iMovie than version 8.
So...can anyone tell me what system/memory requirements I will need to transfer and edit files from the Canon HV30 to a Mac, and whether I can use iMovie 6?
Thank you so much in advance for any help you can give me!

a G4/~700MHz device is a bit 'underpowered' for HiDef.. allthough, iMHD5 will run on it .. (not sure about vers6 ); as this set-up is 'antique', G4 should be used with OsX.3.x, QTvers6.x, iTunes vers5/6 .. not easy to maintain such a set-up ..
    problem is:
your HiDef imports from HDV will get converted by iM first into AppleIntermediateCodec.. (~40-60GB/h).. this is a process of high computation.. your students will notice looooooong periods, iM isn't responsive..
I assume, your task is a bit too ... ambitious for your hardware ..
MacMinis (Intel) are actually 'cheap' to buy ... consider purchase of 2-3 devices as 'HiDef workstations' ...

  • Question about canon HV30

    (FCS 2)
I have been shooting DV for a few years, and have had no real issues.
At work, we just bought a Canon HV30. I have never shot in HD. (As I am sure you know) it shoots in 3 modes:
    HDV (1080i)
    HDV 30 (progressive)
    HDV 24 (progressive 24 fps)
Most of our work right now will be for web. Down the road I see us burning HD DVD.
What format should I be using???
Also, I have shot some talking head footage using HDV 1080i.
When do I need to de-interlace? At what stage do I de-interlace? That part has been confusing me.
Should I just stick with shooting progressive?
    I really appreciate any advice.

Okay Here's a guide. This will give you some awesome looking footage to work with:
    1. Setup your Audio/Video Settings.
    2. Sequence Preset: HDV- 1080i60
    3. Capture Preset: HDV
    4. Device Control: HDV Firewire Basic
    5. Video playback: Off
    6. Audio playback: Built-in Audio
    7. Plug in your HV-30 via firewire
    8. Click on Log and Capture
    9. The HV30 will auto create scenes when you start / stopped the tape. (Very Useful)
    10. After your footage has been captured, open JES Deinterlacer.
You can get it here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
Make sure you get the right version for your OS.
Now all footage is captured at 29.97 JES Deinterlacer will go in get rid of the duplicate frames and get it at a nice 23.976.
Now in JES do the following:
    1. Go to "input" and select the footage you'd like to convert.
    2. Put checks in the boxes for: "Top field first" and "video range"
    3. In the "Project" tab select "Inverse Telecine" from the drop down menu. Then
check "Detect Cadence Breaks" and "Output frame rate 23.976"
    4. In the "Output" tab, check "Progressive" and do a "Direct" output with "Photo-JPEG" as the compressor.
You are going to be changing the footage from HDV MOV to Photo JPEG MOV. There is absolutely no loss of quality in fact it will look so much better than what you captured and will be 24P.
The frame rate on the clips should now be 23.976 with about 20mbs data rate. The original capture files are no longer needed and can be deleted, but first! check your new converted files in FCP. Then delete the original capture files.
Now it's time to bring it all back to FCP
    1. Create a new sequence.
    2. Change the sequence settings to:
    Frame Size: 1440x1080 HD 16x9
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440x1080
    Field Dominance: None
    Compressor: Photo-JPEG Quality 100%
    Audio: 48kHz 16bit, default config
Check it out in the timeline. I think you will be impressed in the power of that little HV30.
Basically what you just did was when the HV30 records it puts a 60i wrapper around your 24P footage. This method will take off the wrapper and you get awesome looking 24P footage!
    - Hope this helps!

  • Canon HV30 1080i/30 import to imovie HD6 what do I select for " format"

Hello, i use the canon HV30. I connect to the computer via firewire, open imovie HD 6 and then 1. name new project, 2. save on desktop. 3. format--now in the drop down menu there are several choices. I chose 1080i for the format then I hit " import" when the single miniDV tape finished it took up 60gb of HD space.
One tape should not be 60gb.
    what am i doing wrong?
HOw do you import a DVtape that was recorded at 1080i/30p?
    please, please advise

I have been learning a bit about Codecs and Apple has published a good explanation of why AIC is so data heavy. It does not temporally compress the video so that each frame is decoded separately and this creates a situation where the data size is 3 to 4 times as large as HDV. For this reason, it would make sense that the video is ~60GB per hour in AIC for high definition video.
