Only copy files that aren't there...

Hi
I keep my itunes stored on my Macbook, it's quite a large library (1.25tb). Every few weeks I back it up to an external drive, the easiest way i've found is by copying the whole folder, all 1.25tb and overwriting whats on the external drive each time, this obviously copies a lot of files which already exists there for the sake of 50 or so gb of new stuff. Is there anyway of just copying the stuff over which doesnt currently exist on the external? Sometimes it comes up with an option to "keep newer" but that seems to suggest that what is on the external disk is newer than on the macbook which doesnt really fit the bill...
Cheers
Rob

Just specify the iTunes Folder and CCC will only copy files that have changed.   If you deleted a file, it will also delete it on the backup (but there is a setting to change that behavior).
Google https://www.google.com/#q=carbon+copy+cloner+to+backup+itunes
and you'll see others have recomended this,  See: http://www.everythingicafe.com/how-to-backup-your-itunes-library/

    Have you restored the iphone through itunes?
    You say the unread messages aren't there but then they appear?

  • Copying files that are updated.

    I wanted to make a program that copies files from a directory (and subdirectories) to another location.
    So let's say I have a folder in C:\myfolder . In this folder there is another folder (myfolder2) and some type of file(s) (.txt .docx etc.). In myfolder2 there are/is some file(s) also.
    I want this program to check each and every FILE if it is older than a FILE in some other location (C:\myotherfolder). If the file does not exist in myotherfolder then it should copy it also.
    So the question is: Does someone know a good and effective way of copying ONLY the files that are "new" but leave the others alone AND reach into as many subdirectories as possible.
    Here is an effort in doing this but I have stopped since I'm afraid that this would require me to make alot of if statements if there are many subfolders:
    import java.io.File;
    * @author Simmi
    * @version 15.sept.2009
    public class CompareFiles
        // instance variables - replace the example below with your own
        private String f1;    // The location to be copied.
        private String f2;      // The location to copy to.
        private String files[];
        private String files2[];
        private String relation;  // Not used at the moment.
        private long d1;    // Not used at the moment. Going to be used to compare the date of two files.

        public CompareFiles(String f1,String f2)
            this.f1 = f1;
            this.f2 = f2;
            initialize();
        public void compare()
        public void printDetails()
        private void initialize()
            File src = new File(f1);
            String files[] = src.list();   // Not sure if this is a good way.
            File dst = new File(f2);
            String files2[] = dst.list();    // Not sure if this is a good way.
            if(src.isDirectory())
            if(!dst.exists())
                dst.mkdir();
                for(String string : files)
                    File myfile = new File(f1,string);
                    if(myfile.isDirectory())        //  Here I halted.
                    System.out.println(string.toString());   //  Only to test if all the files are there.
    }

    This lists the files on your C Drive. You may want to change where it starts or at least run it in your IDE so you can stop it.

  • Is it possible to only view files that could be opened by a program?

    Hello all, this is my first mac and for the most part I find it as good or better than windows in almost everyway. One feature that I guess I took for granted in windows was that it only displayed files that could be opened by a program in that program. For instance when I am in powerpoint and I want to open another powerpoint file, I would hit open and it would only display powerpoint files. I have noticed in OS X if you go to open, then enable all powerpoint files all it does is grey out everything but the powerpoint files. Is there anyway instead of graying them out, it just doesn't display them like what happens in windows? Thanks for your help, Scott

    This has nothing to do with the OS. It's controlled by the individual program. The programmer has to write the specific code for what will or will not be displayed in a file dialog. If the programmer uses the code primitives "normally" then unmatching files are grayed out. This way you can still see files in the directory in case you want to open a file that has the wrong extension. Usually the application provides a drop down menu where you can select options such as display all files, only matching files, etc. However, the programmer has to implement these features.
    One thing that will help you a great deal is to stop looking for OS X to be like Windows. Although there are many elements that are similar there are many more that are not. If you haven't read this yet, you may find it helpful: Switch 101.

  • Can't move -only copy files to nested folder

    I have new external hard drives (a trusted brand I have used for years -default formatted for Mac).
    I drag-copied a folder of large image files from Drive A to Drive B. Then I dragged the folder on Drive B to another folder nested on Drive B. But I could not "move" the folder -the OS would only COPY the folder to the new destination. I have never seen this unless I held option key to duplicate.
    I'm guessing there are some prefs settings or privileges options that I need to change.
    The Drive is formatted as: Mac OS Extended (Journaled - Read&Write)
    I did designate this drive for Time Machine Backup
    Thanks for any help
    New Mac Pro (cylinder tower) 10.9.5

    Thanks Eric. I don't see that option, but I did discover what the problem is:
    Sharing/Permissions were set to:
    System - read/write
    Wheel - read/write
    Everyone - read only
    Above the options window text read: "You can only read"
    After changing permissions to: "everyone - read/write"  all functions returned to "normal", so I guess the system was seeing "me" as a user, NOT the Admin. I am the sole user of this workstation. I appear to be logged in under my name, but maybe I am not considered the "admin"?
    Any further user/admin clarification appreciated. (When computer wakes up, I log in under my name, not guest)

  • External Hard Drive with Time Machine, Will it Delete Files that aren't Backups?

    Hello reader,
              My concern right now that I need help with is backing up with Time Machine. I went down to an Apple Store and they formated my External Drive 1TB to work with Time Machine then I backed up my MacBook Pro and all is well. However, now I want to do this again, BUT now I have added files onto the external drive that are newer but I didn't want to do a complete backup for. Like new pictures or iMovie events. So instead of redoing a complete backup after adding like 3 big files and nothing else, I just tossed them on the Extrernal Drive no problem. Now I feel like it's been a while and I should do a full backup for all the littler files I have now. But there is now 1 "Backup" File on the external drive that "Can't be modified" or I would have just dragged the 3 quick large files into the backup that I made and been happy. But I couldn't do that so I put it in some blank space on the external drive.
    But my question for you, reader, is if I backup again, will the files that ARE NOT in the backup folder that was created from an ACTUAL backup from Time Machine be deleted?
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Backup Files from First Backup                      These 2 are things I added                                                                                                                                                                                             that I didn't feel I had to waste                                                                                                                                                                                     another 100GB on unchanged                                                                                                                                                                          things with another complete backup.

    TimeMachine is designed to perform one full backup when it is first connected to your computer and from then on back up only the files you add or edit. Opening the TimeMachine drive's backup folder from the Finder is basically a no-no. Access TimeMachine via the TimeMachine application.
    Assuming you frequently plug the TimeMachine drive in and let it backup and assuming the newer files are on the computer - they are being backed up and TimeMachine will be able to restore the entire drive if/when it is needed.
    Just keep these things in mind. TimeMachine runs every hour (when it is connected to your computer - so be sure to connect it at least once a day and let it do a backup) and backs up new and edited files. It is guaranteed to keep any file that is currently on your computer. If you delete a file from your computer TimeMachine may delete it if extra space is needed. The drive you use for TimeMachine really shouldn't be used for any other purpose.

  • Exporting files that aren't too big to be able to upload to the web

    I just got a new iMac and want to buy Final Cut Studio 2 for Final Cut Pro 6. My only concern is everytime i've used FCP, the files are always very huge. In the GB range. thats fine when im putting that stuff on a dvd, but now I need to upload those things to the web.
    Is there a way to export projects so they are a manageable size? I know quality will get lost but I want to know if I can export files that I will be able to upload and have people view before I spend a good amount of $$ buying it. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    I like my way the best... but only because I like my way the best.
    First, understand that what you are dealing with is an art... compression.
    BUT thankfully Apple sees that my way is the best TOO and gave it to you as a simple option in the export path. (wink)
    SO...
    File - Export - QT Conversion.
    Then,
    FORMAT: QuickTime Movie
    USE: Broadband HIGH
    Then, hit the OPTIONS button and then SIZE. If your sequence is 16:9 change the size to 420x270. If not, leave alone.
    Hit done and export.
    Should come in around 5 megs a minute and look great!
    Good luck,

  • Automator - Metadatamover dont move, only copy files

    Hello,
    i wanto to create the following service in automator to rename image files and move the renamed files to a created folder.
    My workflow will be -> mark files, right click -> choose Rename Service -> Insert target folder Name -> Folder will be created, files renamed and move from source folder to target folder.
    This will worked for me, but he only copy the files and dont move it to the target folder? Why?
    What i did:
    Download the automator action MetaDataMover from here -> http://6v8.gamboni.org/-Automator-.html
    1. MetaDatamover (Action Move same directory, overwrite)
    2. Create New Folder (Show when run)
    What it does:
    It renames the files, creates the target folder, but dont move the files, only copy the files. How can i handle this? Where is my fault?
    Thanx in advance

  • Cannot copy files that reside on external drive

    I have a drive that seems to be functioning all right for using the files already on it. I can read documents and watch movies that are on it. But when I try to copy a file on it, whether to another drive or even onto the same drive, I get a message that reads, " The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in [file name] can't be read or written (Error code -36). At other times I get a message reading, "The operation can’t be completed because the item [file name is in use. I tried to repair it with Disk Utility, got a message that read "Unused node is not erased (node = 14727), but then supposedly was able to repair the drive successfully, but the problems persist. I also replaced the directory using TechTool, but still no luck.
    What might be the problem here and how do I solve it. Some of the files were added since my last backup and I don't want to lose them.

    I had a drive a couple of years ago that would sometimes suffer from the -36 error on copying files, then work perfectly fine for awhile. I figured it might be dying, but that there was no hurry about replacing it. And it did die.....at most inconvenient possible time, of course. If I were you I wouldn't trust that drive too much!

  • How do I write files that aren't text? Like gif, doc, pdf, jpg, etc.

    I don't know how, in java, to write files that are not pure text. I've been using the BufferedReader/Writer but it is not working. Can someone give me some sample code of how I can write file data correctly?

    First of all, if you aren't writing text then you shouldn't be using a Writer at all, you should be using an OutputStream. Writers deal with characters, OutputStreams deal with bytes. Second, the hard part of outputting those files is that you have to understand that they each have a defined structure you have to follow. For example, you can find a document that describes how a PDF file must be structured on Adobe's site. (Before you go searching for it, I'll just mention that it is over 500 pages long.) You have to write out bytes that satisfy the rules for the file type and arrange the content within those rules.

  • Printing events that aren't there!

    I just installed Tiger (10.4.11) on my G4 1.25 GHz PowerPC. It has iCal 2.0.5. When I bring up the Print dialog, there are entries that aren't on the calendar itself (I just have one calendar). I have recurring events every Thursday & Friday. In the Print preview, it duplicates these events on Friday & Saturday. Anyone know what's up?

    You can submit suggestions for the iTunes Music Store through the Request Music page. Whether or not your suggestion will ever be acted upon will depend on a number of factors, some out of Apple's control (to start with, the artists and record companies have to be willing to license the tracks to Apple), so don't expect instant action.

  • Aperture stuck relocating a master (original) file that is not there.

    While relocating original files, Aperture stops on a certain file or two that it thinks is there. When I search for the exact file, it does not exist. The issue is on files that are usually named with a number at the end for duplicates or copies like DSC_1234 (2).NEF. I have had corrupted cameras, memory cards, bad memory card readers and new MacBook Air issues so I will admit my Aperture library is probably not incredibly stable. I have rebuilt it using the Command-Option dialog and this issue still persists. After this I will be exporting projects out of this library and start a new but was wondering if any one had any solutions in the mean time?

    Logging out worked!
    I tried quitting, pressing escape, and tried force quitting by holding the shortcut Command-Option-Shift-Escape button for 10+ seconds and nothing worked. Instead of force quitting I tried logging out and a second window came up saying it was "Updating for sharing previews" then it quit and logged out.

  • .mac Startpage shows Homepages that aren't there anymore....

    I published quite a few homepages by iWeb and as well setup a filesharing iDisk page via the online .mac portal.
    Then I went to my iDisk via the Finder and deleted all sites that are in the /web folder. I also deleted all files that I initially shared via this iDisk webpage.
    But when I move to my .mac startpage I see still all those pages in the left overview pane. Evene after clearing my chache, many reloads etc.
    When I press one of the shown links to the homepage I always only get to the "We're sorry, but we can't find the iWeb page you've requested."
    When I click on the "iDisk public folder" link, thats shows 9 files, I only see an empty folder.
    What can I do to get back a clear startpage pane?
    I cannot delete the pages in iWeb as I use it to create my homepages for another account!
    Thanks

    'homepage' actually refers to .Mac's HomePage, an online website creation and editing suite that's included in a .Mac subscription. It is what and where you wind up when you click on the HomePage icon in the .Mac site's tab bar.
    HomePage comes with .Mac, iWeb comes with iLife. They are not the same thing, and iWeb is supported through it's own support areas and its own dedicated forums.
    Mods might get around to moving the thread, but probably won't. Your question in short; just cut & paste it to a better forum.

    I find when trying to download pdf files that quite often, Firefox says "the file is damaged and could not be repaired" or something like that - but I know there is nothing wrong with the file because when I used Internet Explorer, it works!

    kstp,
    the .thm file is simply a jpeg thumbnail version of your movie which you could probably view by changing the name from .thm to .jpeg (not entirely sure about that). Your audio problem is more likely caused by iMovie not having the codec needed to play the audio format encoded into your mov container. Maybe someone here more familiar with iMovie can tell you what audio formats work within iMovie, and you can set that in your camera to prevent this problem.
    Now, worst case scenario is that you'll probably have to extract the audio and convert it to something that works in iMovie. You can extract the audio from within iMovie from the advanced options menu. You can also use a free app called FFMpegX to extract and convert it to something else. Hopefully though, someone here will have a more convenient solution for you.

  • Creating Powershell script to run against Multiple XML Files: Correcting Nordic characters. Renaming only the files that were corrected.

    Greetings,
    I am new to powershell and scripting and would like to create a powershell script to do the following to XML files.
    I would like to change the data received in XML files that contains special Nordic characters: such as
    ä, Ä, é, ö, Ö, ü, Ü, and ß respectfully.
    The file names that gets drop to me come in with the following naming convention: C54ABC_111120140500_1, C54ABC_111120140500_2, C54ABC_111120140500_3, C54ABC_111120140500_4 all the way to C54ABC_111120140500_12.
    By automating the script, I would like the script to look into a directory containing these files and access the data within it and change the the data that has the special characters to the English Dictionary character equivalent.
    e.g. ä for a, Ä for A, é for e, ö for o, Ö for O, ü for u, Ü for U, and ß for ss.
    Once that step is complete. I would like to rename the file from C54ABC_111120140500_1.xml to C54ABC_111120140500_1_rctf.xml (adding an additional 5 characters to the end of a file that was corrected) if the file did not need any correction then renaming is
    not needed.
    the working directory (Source and destination) will remain in the same location. e.g. C:\Temp\
    Currently I was able to come up with the following, however I am stuck when it comes to the renaming part since, it requires "IF and Else" statments .... I think.
    $Source = "C:\Temp"
    $Destination = "C:\Temp"
    $regex33 = "\*.xml"
    (Get-Content $regex33) |
    ForEach-Object {$_ -replace "ä", "a" -replace "Ä", "A" -replace "é", "e" -replace "ö", "o" -replace "Ö", "O" -replace "ü", "u" -replace "Ü", "U" -replace "ß", "ss"}
    #Rename-Item -NewName {$_.name -replace -whatif}
    Your Assistance and Expertise is greatly appreciated.
