OOP Resources

Hello all...I'm currently working on learning Java, and I was wondering if anybody knew any good resources (i.e. online tutorials, actual books, etc.) that do a really good job of explaining objects, including inheritance, abstract classes, interfaces, etc. ... I just finished a Java class in college, and the book that we have isn't explaining it too well for me... Thanks a lot!

  • Good resources for Best OOP Practices?

As my coworkers and I dip our toes into OOP, we're looking for best practices/guidelines to follow.
We already took the basic OOP course from NI and watched a few intro presentations.
What are some other guides, documents, or books people can recommend for solid OOP design practices? LabVIEW-specific guides are especially appreciated, as none of us have a strong CS background. But anything will help.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately there is a simple check list you can employ. OO programming is somewhat an art and there are many ways to solve the same problem. Some are obviously better than others but you can find multiple ways of doing the same thing. A few things to consider is that when using inheritance your child classes should always be more specific than it's predecessor. Avoid adding methods or class data to a parent which is only used by some of the children. Generally everything in the parent should apply equally to all children. Don't be scared off of using inheritance. It is quite powerful when used correctly. Prior to coding use something like UML to define your classes. It is generally easy to see if you are heading in the wrong direction when the classes are placed on paper and you see the relationships between objects and how they are used.If you find yourself repeating some functionality inside multiple classes you may want to consider creating a new class and create a HAS-A relationship between the classes. It is perfectly acceptable to have classes contain other classes. Speaking of HAS-A think about the relationship between classes. Identify the distinction between a HAS-A relationship and an IS-A relationship. IS-A will drvie your inheritance. HAS-A will build your library of reuseable code.

  • GNOME Fails to start - Polkit? Main.js? - Receive 'Oops' message.

Been using Arch for years but this is my first problem surprisingly so posting it in this Newbies section.
I have MATE, KDE, and FLUXBOX working fine as desktop environments for years. Thought I would give GNOME a try and no matter what I've tried I cannot get it working. All I get is a sad face with an 'OOPS' message on screen. Although I am prompted to enter my WiFi password presumably from NetworkManager. None of the errors listed below turn up much on Google so I thought I'd turn to the community. Any help getting GNOME working correctly would be very much appreciated.

it seems you're missing dependencies, or they're not started for some reason. Try running GNOME via GDM, installing latter should pull in the full kitchen sink. If you want more hints, google for "gjs polkit not found".

  • Oops, bcache hung up after update to linux-3.11.4

My ext4 root partion mounted on a bcache device
and the /dev/bcache0 register by a bakup partion on fakeraid /dev/mapper/isw_dfabciibaj_ird1p2
The last time update to linux-3.11.4, it hung up on systemd job starting.
So I enter emergency prompt with kernel option "ro", then try mount -o remount,rw /
but the bcache module crash in seconds

Oh well, for you working wireless is probably more important than experimentation. I'll need to find myself a machine with new-ish broadcom wireless to play with . I only briefly had one a few months ago.
    I guess I am still using b43 firmware (aur/b43-firmware).
It goes like this: Broadcom cards use special communication busses. In your case bcma; the other is ssb, it's used by older Broadcom cards. The kernel has bcma and ssb drivers to support these busses and it has the b43 driver for the wireless chips. So bcma+b43 (or ssb+b43) gives you working wireless. b43 is a reverse engineering effort, because in the past Broadcom was very non-opensource. But then Broadcom released their own opensource driver - brcmsmac. So now there's two drivers in the kernel supporting the same cards: bcma+b43 and brcmsmac. • Ms Project 2013 report for resource name, tasks less than 100% complete within a date range I can set each time

I have seen I can create a report for a resource name with a specified date range, and one that can show me for a resource name any incomplete tasks, but I want to do the following and cant work out how to state it in the report constructor:
    resource name equals - {I want to set a given resource in here}
% complete is less than 100%
start - date range is between [today -7 days] and [today +7 days]
Please can someone show me how this is possible, I know it will be and it is me that has been defeated!!

    workspacedesign,
Oops, my bad. I missed the point that the Name field for assignment rows will be the task name and that's not what you want. There is also a glitch in the date range filter. So, here's how to fix that.
First, in the Resource Usage view, copy the Name field to Text1. Now select the resource line and do a fill down for all assignments under that resource. Do that for each resource. This could be automated with VBA, but for now, a manual setup should work
    fine.
Second, instead of testing for the Name field in the filter, test for the Text1 field.
Third, change the Finish test to be "less than or equal to".
Now when you apply that filter, enter beginning date of your range and then the ending date of your range followed by the resource name. You should get the data you want.
Unfortunately formulas in custom fields are not as flexible in Project as they are in Excel. For example, in Project a formula can only operate on data for that row. Further, even if you use the formula Today() +7 for your filter criteria, the first time
the filter is used, Project will hard code today's date into the filter. The normal way around both of these shortcomings is to use VBA.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mass Maintenance of Resource in APO

    Hi,
I need to make changes in a number of resource in APO at a time. Do we have a mass maintenance process in APO to do that. I need to be able to chnge the Capacity Variants.
Is there a way if i can put that in a batch job in the background.
    Reply awaited.. thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Manoj

    use MASSD for maintining resources
use MASSBACK for doing background maintainance
edit: oops looks like i double posted.

  • Are LabVIEW OOP "Helpers" modifiable?

I am finally "byting the bullet" and attempting to refactor one of my Projects to use LabVIEW OOP (it seems to me ideally suited for OOP-ifying).
But I have a few "picky issues".  I don't always like the way LabVIEW "helps" me.  Some things I can change (like the default Class Icon), and I do.
But others I'd like to change to conform to my own personal style.  Here's an example -- create a New VI for Data Member Access.  Works fine, but the Error terminals are named "error in (no error)" and "error out", while I use "Error In" and "Error Out" (note the Silver Controls also use the latter "prettier" names).  While I'm thinking of it, what if I want to use Silver (or System, or even Classic) Controls?
Another thing is that I've try to "encourage" myself to use Revision History by turning on the Option "Prompt for a Comment when a VI is saved".  Each time you create a New VI for ... there appears to be a whole lot of "saving" going on in the background because I need to hit "OK" (for saves to Historylv_icon.lvlibp) several times.
Are the (I presume scripting) processes used to help us available and modifiable?  I do realize that if I start messing around, I could create a real mess, but that's why Re-Install was invented!  If not, I'll just Grin and Work Around It.
    Bob Schor
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Take a look at <LabVIEW directory>\resource\Framework\Providers\LVClassLibrary\NewAccessors, and then into "ArrayElementScripter" and "BaseAccessorScripter". There are the codes which make "magic" when you create new accessor. And there are "Custom User Scripting For New Simple Accessor VI.vi" and "Custom User Scripting For New Array Element Accessor VI.vi", where you can put your own code called when accessor is created - use these two VIs, and there would be no need to reinstall whole LV, just make backup copies of these two.

  • Best practice OOP - good design

I started to write a chat application [server + client]
and I wanted to optimise it [good OOP + reuse of classes, objects].
So, I have a class that handles the interface, a class that handles the socket [reading, writing], a class that handles the events, etc...
As Iwanted to write it the best way possible, I looked a little in patterns and OOP design books in order to make it better.
After reading, digging ..., an idea came to me.
A problem I came across many times, in my past projects also was the fact that, when I was in the interface class, and i needed the socket class I couldn't find a way to get it and instantiate it when I needed it. I always had to pass it as an argument to the constructor of the interface class [just for this example] or in the class where i instantiate the interface class, i had to appeal a method on the object=interface in order to put the socket object in the interface class , for future manipulation.
It could get more complicated if i wanted to use the socket object only when a certain event appear, and i wanted it in who-knows what class.
So i trid this implementation of noname pattern [with influences from all the books I read] :
I create an instatiator of objects [say class ObjectManager] with the following methods:
    void addObject(Object o,String nameObj)
    Object getObject(String nameObj)
Now I instantiate [in the meanwhile i present to the user a pretty JWindow with loading...] all the objects I will use in the application and the objects-resource > [Colors, Fonts,etc...] and also add them to the ObjectManager. Also, all the objects will have a reference to this ObjectManager.
and when I need a specific Object, I will get it with [specyfing its name]
    ObjectManager.getObject(nameObj).
What I want from the guys from this forum:
    1) comments on this [is it good, i just go crazy, all of this is garbage, i am wrong(specify why)]...
    2) Is this a well-known pattern, or a version of a well-known pattern and I can't recognize it?
    3) If anybody understood my problem, is this the best way to achieve it[getting objects already instantiated whenever and wherever I want], and if not, which is it
    4) The problem is put wrong, an application should be thought differently - please guide me to some URLs, tutorials...
    Thanx in advance
    Gabi

In some ways, this is similar to a Factory pattern: a place that you go to get objects.
The difference is that a typical Factory creates (or returns from somewhere!) objects of a limited number of related types, based on some configuration input (a FooFactory, for example, doesn't typically return a Bar object, unless Bar is a subclass of or implements Foo).
For an atypical factory, consider the java.rmi.Naming class. On the one side, a server registers the objects that it serves; on the other, a client requests those objects. As far as the client is concerned, this fits the Factory pattern exactly; on the server side, it doesn't.
Personally, I like having a singleton "Manager" object for various semi-related objects within an application. For example, a DialogManager that holds onto all the application's dialogs. Someone has to know about them, and it could be the application's main class, but that tends to more clutter than I like.

  • MRS (Multi Resource Scheduling) - Using Business Partners

In a previous (long) thread I had asked about using Business Partners and the problem I was having assigning work to a BP.  I keep getting the error message "no work center found for resource".  I was told that to fix this problem I was told "... For the work center error, all you need to do is deactivate the work center checks. Yes, these checks make relevance when HR is active.  Check the IMG: Sources of Demand -> Orders -> Activate Additional Checks When Saving Order Here you can deactivate the work center checks."
I deactivated the work center checks in the specified MRS IMG item but I still get the "no work center found for resource" error.  Any other suggestions?
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
    Oops !! I am sorry ...
The old solution (deactivate the additional check) works only while integration.
    You should deactivate here:
Sources of Demand --> Orders --> Control Integration Between MRS and PM/CS
Here, in the frame "Backward Integration" activate "No backward integration" for work center.
    This should surely help.

    What is Object Orientation?
Object orientation (OO), or to be more precise, object-oriented programming, is a problem-solving method in which the software solution reflects objects in the real world.
A comprehensive introduction to object orientation as a whole would go far beyond the limits of this introduction to ABAP Objects. This documentation introduces a selection of terms that are used universally in object orientation and also occur in ABAP Objects. In subsequent sections, it goes on to discuss in more detail how these terms are used in ABAP Objects. The end of this section contains a list of further reading, with a selection of titles about object orientation.
    Objects
An object is a section of source code that contains data and provides services. The data forms the attributes of the object. The services are known as methods (also known as operations or functions). Typically, methods operate on private data (the attributes, or state of the object), which is only visible to the methods of the object. Thus the attributes of an object cannot be changed directly by the user, but only by the methods of the object. This guarantees the internal consistency of the object.
    Classes
Classes describe objects. From a technical point of view, objects are runtime instances of a class. In theory, you can create any number of objects based on a single class. Each instance (object) of a class has a unique identity and its own set of values for its attributes.
    Object References
In a program, you identify and address objects using unique object references. Object references allow you to access the attributes and methods of an object.
In object-oriented programming, objects usually have the following properties:
    Encapsulation
Objects restrict the visibility of their resources (attributes and methods) to other users. Every object has an interface, which determines how other objects can interact with it. The implementation of the object is encapsulated, that is, invisible outside the object itself.
    Polymorphism
Identical (identically-named) methods behave differently in different classes. Object-oriented programming contains constructions called interfaces. They enable you to address methods with the same name in different objects. Although the form of address is always the same, the implementation of the method is specific to a particular class.
    Inheritance
You can use an existing class to derive a new class. Derived classes inherit the data and methods of the superclass. However, they can overwrite existing methods, and also add new ones.
    Uses of Object Orientation
Below are some of the advantages of object-oriented programming:
Complex software systems become easier to understand, since object-oriented structuring provides a closer representation of reality than other programming techniques.
In a well-designed object-oriented system, it should be possible to implement changes at class level, without having to make alterations at other points in the system. This reduces the overall amount of maintenance required.
Through polymorphism and inheritance, object-oriented programming allows you to reuse individual components.
In an object-oriented system, the amount of work involved in revising and maintaining the system is reduced, since many problems can be detected and corrected in the design phase.
    Achieving these goals requires:
    Object-oriented programming languages
Object-oriented programming techniques do not necessarily depend on object-oriented programming languages. However, the efficiency of object-oriented programming depends directly on how object-oriented language techniques are implemented in the system kernel.
    Object-oriented tools
Object-oriented tools allow you to create object-oriented programs in object-oriented languages. They allow you to model and store development objects and the relationships between them.
    Object-oriented modeling
The object-orientation modeling of a software system is the most important, most time-consuming, and most difficult requirement for attaining the above goals. Object-oriented design involves more than just object-oriented programming, and provides logical advantages that are independent of the actual implementation

    Hi,
I am trying to access my website (java server pages) with
jrun and it shows the following on the browser:
Oops! We couldn't find your document.
The file that you requested could not be found on this
    server.
On the console, it says "error Requested resource login.jsp

    1. Try registering it to see if it might have some warranty left.
    2. Complain to the seller.
    3. Complain to Ebay.
    4. Try the 5Rs on Ipod support http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    5. I hat to say this but a short sharp tap of the side of the ipod on a hard surface completely restored my un-restoreable 20Gig ipod!!

  • Compare OOPs method and ABAP Subroutines

    Hi SAP,
In my client interview i faced a question that is "Iam calling perform statement for about 100 times in my program and i have found that there is a performance issue  and what is the solution you will give to improve the performance?"
    I told by using methods.
    He told correct.
But i want to know how technically  methods are performing than routines. and why?
    Thanks in Advance.

I think your Interviewer here has displayed a "pitiful" lack of understanding of this topic if he / she really actually thought this way. (The Person <b>Giving</b> the Interview not the person being asked the questions).
OOP is a different METHODOLOGY. I'll use a sales order for example.
OK in a sales order you have all sorts of data such as who the customer is, quantities and costs of the the line item(s), what the materials are, delivery instructions, delivery schedule lines etc etc. You might also need other data that comes from different SAP modules such as has the order been invoiced, has it been paid and has the amount been booked to the appropriate general ledger account.
In a "True" object orientated scenario all this data would be "encapsulated"  into a single "Sales Order Object". All you would have to do is to "Instantiate" the sales order  --I.e give it a key say sales order number and then WITHOUT ANY FURTHER PROGRAMMING  all these "Attributes" or properties of the Sales order would be retiurned to your program.
<b>As SAP is based on Relational data bases all this information needs to be read from the various distinct tables and  your object is "Constructed". -- This is what the special method "Constructor" does when you first "Create " the object / instantiate it in your application program.
Constructing this object can take a considerable amount of time and resources depending on how much data needs to be read and from how many tables.
From then onwards you've got complete access to ALL the public attributes of the SALES ORDER class</b>.
I'm leaving discussion of " Other Methods" out of this post as they are not totally relevant to the case in point.
When you call a function module you are bulding up possibly a single table or want to retrieve  / post a document etc.  This function module can be used anywhere and doesn't have any relationship to anything except  the parameters it gets from calls in your application program.
For sequential processing of large numbers of "Objects" the system has a lot more work to do INITIALLY as it has to go through all the programming to build up all the attributes FOR EVERY OBJECT. For complex objects this could involve 100's of function module calls.
Now when we get to OBJECT Orientated data bases this will not be a problem as after creation the object will be stored in its entireity so no overhead in re-building all the attributes is incurred. (The JDO for those doing JAVA does a lot of this already when "persistent objects" are used).
So your "Interviwer" was really asking the wrong questions.
OO is MUCH MUCH simpler once the objects and classes have been correctly designed and constructed. Application programming and development time can be much reduced.
However depending on what your Function module is doing in your application load on the system could bet  be much reduced compared with OO (at least until a genuine OO DBMS system is used).
In any case whether you perform a function 100 times or read all the data in one go it actually depends on what the function module actially does since you might NOT be able to retrieve everything in one go without locking the system up thereby causing longer response times for other users.
If you are running processes which are highly dependendent on the data you are accessing it could well be MUCH BETTER to retrieve this data in small doses since you won't lock the data segements for anything like the same amount of time.
OO in classical SAP does have implications with DATA INTEGRITY as well.
Say your OO aplication needs to UPDATE some of the attributes of a sales order you will need to LOCK those attributes against otherconcurrent updates being done against the "Standard SAP tables" via "Classical SAP processes and Transactions". Not an easy task here if the Class Object is complex.
However if used sensibly OO is the way forward and once OODBMS (Object Orientated data base systems) become more common place performance and data integrity issues will be solved.
Having used OO for a number of years I would certainly NEVER want to go back to classical ABAP.
<b>Most problems with performance etc arise when people try and replicate standard sap transactions and programs with OO.  DON'T -- IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT.</b>
If you really DO need to process loads of items sequentially you might find that using something like BW anyway is a better bet.
Finally not the answer most "techies" will appreciate"  but Hardware is actually very cheap these days compared to programming time, using expensive external SAP consultants, etc etc.
It Might be financially more profitable in any case just to upgrade the hardware rather than spend the time and cost of re-writing old inefficient code. (Even lower cost "Abap Factories" in India/Singapore etc cost significant amounts of money and the rising economies of those countries means in any case that's not such a cheap option anymore).
The best time for re-writing is when you start a new project so you can design the thing using OO from the START. Don't try and fit a square peg into a round hole.
    Cheers
    Jimbo

My kernel skills are next to zero so I don't even know where to begin to look for things to fix. The only thing I know is that if I set the runlevel to 5 at boot I get the Oops straight at boot. It appears that xorg (with nvidia module) starts loading but only makes it to about half a deacent log file. And when I try to issue lsmod the terminal just hangs.
Runlevel 3 boots fine witout the Oops but as soons as I try to do something module related (like lsmod again) the Oops is right there.
Any ideas what to do about this or am I down the reinstall route again?

I'm still having problems with this
I don't really know where to begin when it comes to prevent modules being loaded. Which ones are safe to remove etc?
This is what I get at boot trying to get straight into X.
Can anyone make something out of the dump? Any ideas what might be wrong is much appreciated.

    edit:
I hope this is solved now. I couldn't figure out what module that was acting up so I reinstalled and started slowly to install and activate my devices. As soon as I reached the point of installing X, and specifically the nvidia drivers, it all went bonkers again.
I uninstalled the nvidia oackage and built the beta drivers from AUR, but had the same result. I ten turned to nvidia directly and installed their driver (the.run file) and after that everything seems to run smoothly.
So, probably there is something in the pacman package that doesn't work with my Zotac IONitx board.
    Edit again:
The error is back and I have filed a bug report to nvidia. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can solve this for me.
