Open EXCEL at Runtime

Hello all,
Please help me if anyone have any idea about my issue.
In my application, I’m saving some information continuously in Excel with LabVIEW Report Generation Tool Kit.
When data is writing into Excel, I want to open/close the same Excel at Runtime. When I’m Trying to open/Close, Some data is missing.
I think may be “Refnum” is missing for next data Iteration. I tried to control Error Messages but still I’m not getting Correct results.
Could you please tell me if anyone knows about this.
Best Regards,
Munna

Thanks for your help.
Sorry. My problem was not about .csv/.tdms.
Because I want to place data into particular Cells in Excel ( Cell values will change at Runtime).
For your Information my Report will not exceed more than 60,000 rows so, no need to Split the File.
So, I want to know, why LabVIEW is losing ActiveX Reference when we are doing Excel Open/Close at Runtime.
Because I’m not deleting this file(just Closing). I think it should not loose.
BR,
Munna
Eventhough I am not good with ActiveX reference and how its used in RGT, let me guess what is happening.
When you use the report generation toolkit and initialize the report, actually you are opening the file but keeping the window state "Normal". So you don't see that the file is opened and when you actually open it manually there will not be any problem, but when you close the file then the reference becomes invalid. This is very similar to the case when you keep the window "Maximized" and the reference becomes invalid when you close the file. Please correct me if I am wrong.
The best solution is the one you find it by yourself

  • Open excel using runtime if I don't know path

Is it possible to open a spreadsheet using runtime.exec() if I don't know the path to excel.exe? I know that I can type the location of the .xls file to the command line. Can I open the command.exe and pass the file location to it using the IS? Is there a better way?

Thanks, I'll try that Monday AM. Off topic, has the forum been having some troubles lately? I tried to post this question on Thursday and Friday. Every time I posted the post never made it to the forum. If I replied to my own post I would get a message that the post had 1 reply on zero pages?????

  • I can not open Excel (97, 2000, or 2003) spreadsheet in Win98 OS PC using LabVIEW 7.0 Runtime Engine

    Hi,
I have a problem opening an Excel spreadsheet by a LabVIEW application that is using Runtime Engine 7.0 in a Windows 98 OS environment .
I tried LabVIEW 7.1, it will not install on Win98. Meanwhile, I installed  Excel 97 and 2000 (Excel 2003 does not install on Win98) and tried to open the spreadsheet, no luck with any combination.
Same code can open the spreadsheet in a WinXP OS, RTE 7.0, Excel 2000/2003 environment.
What can I do? Any advise?
    Regards,
    LVLV

    Hi,
I did some experiment, I found out that Run-Time Engine 7.0 running executable generated at LabVIEW 7.0 environment (code written in LabVIEW 7.1 but save as 7.0) cannot open Excel 2000 files. If I replace Excel 2000 with Excel 2003 application on my pc, the executable code will open the Excel file (Run-Time Engine 7.0 works with Excel 2003).
Is the Excel 2003 and higher versions will only work with Run-Time Engine 7.0 and higher code?
How can I make executables using Run-Time Engine 7.0 work with Excel 2000 (Windows 98 operating system)??? (I cannot change Excel and Run-Time Engine and OS versions due to limitations, how can I work with what I have?).
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
Perhaps this will help. Open an Excel file, select a sheet, range then set a value, save then close. The idea here is not to write or save but demo a few basic operations.
Also note 'as is' all memory is cleaned up without resorting to what many do, force the garbage collector. This is important if objects are not cleaned up it is very possible in extreme cases to bring a machine down so one should ensure all objects are cleaned

  • Work on an open excel (POWERSHELL)

I've this Workbook, which I want to update.
All I want is - powershell to update this already opened workbook.
So I am looking for option to activate sheet on an already open Excel workbook.
    $xl=New-Object -ComObject "Excel.Application"
    $wb=$xl.Workbooks.open("C:\TEMP\Excel.xls")
    $xlWorkSheet=$wb.ActiveSheet
    $cells = $xlWorkSheet.Cells
    $cells=$ws.Cells
    $cells.item(1,1)="Server NAme"
I had this code to be used. But this is opening a new file. And if I try to open the same file, it opens in readonly mode. I waish to APPEND already open workbook.

Excel runs single instance by default except if you launch it using COM.  It will then opena new instance with each COM instantiation.  This is and has been the Excel behavior since the beginning.
If you open two excel documents  directoly you will be able to get both in the Excel instance.  I opened two separate workbooks and both are available.
    PS C:\scripts> $xl=[Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal]::GetActiveObject("Excel.Application")
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.count
    2
There can be only one Active document at a time but both documents are available.
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.Item(1).Name
    exjunk.csv
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.Item(2).Name
    test.xlsx
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.ActiveWorkbook.Name
    test.xlsx
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.Item(2).Activate()
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.ActiveWorkbook.Name
    test.xlsx
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.Item(1).Activate
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.ActiveWorkbook.Name
    exjunk.csv
We use this quite often with no issues.
I clicked on the Excel icon on the start menu and it opened Excel with a blank "Book1" and title of "Book1 - Excel"
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.Workbooks.count
    3
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.ActiveWorkbook.Name
    Book1
Notice the count is now three and the new active workbook is the newest one opened.
Now I selected another WB by clicking on it on the task bar.  Here is what PowerShell reports.
    PS C:\scripts> $xl.ActiveWorkbook.Name
    exjunk.csv
I know non-programmers have a bit of an issue handling how this works.  It is by design and is critical to how Office products are able to work together and communicate seamlessly so well.  It is what made MS Office the defacto Office Suite. All
efforts to unseat it have failed.
It is also possible to disable this behavior in Excel.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Interacting with current/open Excel documents

Is there any sort of magic that needs to be done to interact with currently open Excel documents in any meaningful state? If I try to open an already open Excel document with the standard method:
    $Excel = New-Object -Com Excel.Application
    $Workbook = $Excel.Workbooks.Open($ExcelFilePath)
    $Worksheet = $Workbook.Worksheets.Item(1)
    $Worksheet.name = 'testing'
    $Workbook.save()
    $Workbook.close()
It either does nothing or gives an error message saying the file is already open for editing. Makes sense. I've also tried getting the active Excel object (as referenced somewhere else on TechNet forums that I can't bother tracking down atm), like this:
    $Excel = [Runtime.Interopservices.Marshal]::GetActiveObject('Excel.Application')
    $Workbook = $Excel.Workbooks.Open($FilePath)
... the rest is the same.
No difference. If I close the document without saving and re-open it, the changes will manifest though, so that's something. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there another way to do this? Is this impossible? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Bmwinstead,
I ran the script on win 8.1 with Office 2013 without issue, and renamed the worksheet:

Pages can open docx files, Numbers can open xlsx files. Each can export to  can export .doc or .xls to the newest Word or Excel format.respectvely, but not to the more recent .docx or .xlsx.
Translation is not perfect in either direction. Numbers and Excel handle some similar features (eg. pop-up menus vs data validation) differently, and the translator cannot translate from one implementation to the other.
If much of your work is going to be transferred between your machine and Windows machines running either MS Excel or MS Word, with editing taking place at both ends of the tunnel, then you'll probably be better off with Office, or one of the Office clones on the Mac end.

    Hi Leo22,
Does this error occur if you use any of the example programs that come shipped with LabVIEW? I would try opening one of the examples that write data to Word and see if those give you an error. Also, have you tried just putting down a New Report.VI and change the report type to Word? If this simple vi (that's all you need to open Word) breaks, I would check to see if there are any instances of Word still open. Check the task manager to see if any word processes are still open. There should not be a problem accessing Word 2003 from LabVIEW 7.0. If neither of these solutions work, please give some more detail about your application and we can research further. Thanks!

    Hi KC,
thanks for your reply. I have in fact been able to find the desired things in the ActiveX properties/methods for Excel in LabView. It took me some looong work going through the functions which I suspected to be the ones. Anyway, I post a little jpeg here of the code if someone ever needs the same functionality. What it does is that it checks how many Excel workbooks are open and controls if each of them matches the searched Excel filename, if one does, it is closed.
    Enjoy

    Hi
    Thank you for using
Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.
From your description, we can Create a trusted location follow these steps
Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Excel Options.
Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings, and then click
    Trusted Locations.
If you want to create a trusted location that is not local to your computer, select the Allow trusted locations on my network (not recommended) check
    box.
    Click Add new location.
IMPORTANT   We recommended that you don't make your entire
Documents or My Documents folder a trusted location. Doing so creates a larger target for a hacker to potentially exploit and increases your security risk. Create a subfolder within Documents or My Documents, and make only that folder a trusted location.
In the Path box, type the name of the folder that you want to use as a trusted location, or click Browse to
    locate the folder.
If you want to include subfolders as trusted locations, select the
Subfolders of this location are also trusted check box.
In the Description box, type what you want to describe the purpose of the trusted location.
    Click OK.

  • Some users can't open Excel files. It is trying to open it in Internet Explorer "An error has occurred. Please try again."

I have some users in my company that can't open Excel files from any document libraries on SharePoint 2010. The receive the error message "An error occurred. Please try again."  We don't currently use the Excel calculations services. When
a user opens an excel file they are prompted to either Read Only or Edit.
This affects less than 5 people in a large company.  They have the Full Control permissions and have been able to open the files previously.  There has been no changes made to the server either.  I can't find anything that points to this in the
    event viewer.
It doesn't matter if which computer that they try to open this up from either.   All computers are Windows 7 Professional with IE 9 and Office 2010 x64.
I can't find anything that points specifically to this exact error. None of the excel files contain pivot tables.    This one has me stumped.

I would make sure no one has open on machine / locked on machine (Would assume you checked this, but wanted to add)
Also would have assumed you restarted the machines (:))
Make sure the file security did not change (check to ensure no one changed the sercuity of the excel)
Make sure the version of excel is the same (Changing from 2010 back to 2007 affects the file, etc.. on convert) that no one converted and saved thus causing error in file.
Can they open other excel files?
It sounds like the excel file it self has changed if you cannot see issue in SharePoint logs.
If it is all SharePoint excel files - try deleting one persons access and readding them to see if that helps.
    SharePoint has issues ;)

Thanks for posting in MSDN forum.
This forum is for developers discussing developing issues involve Excel application.
According to the description, you got an error when you open the document form SharePoint site.
Based on my understanding, this issue maybe relative to the SharePoint, I would like move it to
SharePoint 2013 - General Discussions and Questions forum.
The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.
    Thanks for your understanding.
    Regards & Fei
