Open link in a new tab problem.

When I want to open a link to a new tab by pressing my mouse scroller, it just won't work. Anyone have any solution? It still works after I changed to Firefox 4 after a few days. But it didn't work now. :(

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

  • Opening link in a new tab disables back navigation to the first page

If I am on page A (for an example, let's say it is www.yahoo.com) and I chose a link on that page and by right-clicking open pop-up menu and choose '''Open Link in New Tab''', the page B (let's say finance.yahoo.com) opens in a new tab. Now, if I click on any link on this page B to be opened in the same tab the page (we will call it C) opens, but all options to navigate back ('''Go Back One Page''' browser button, Alt-Left Arrow, '''Back''' option on pop-up menu) appear disabled. However, if I continue to navigate from page C in the same tab to let's say page D, and from there to pages E and F, I can go back all the way to page C, but no further. It looks like for some reason the opening link in a new tab fails to put it in that tab navigation history.
I am running Firefox 4.01. It happens only on my office computer and not on any other computers I use. I had this problem before on the same office computer with Firefox 3.6. I could not get rid of it. Only after I uninstalled 3.6, cleaned all remnants of it and installed 4.0 – the problem went away. I updated to 4.01 and it worked fine for a while. But recently (I don't know what triggered it) the problem came back.

    Thanks for your post.
I've seen it, and that's what I want to avoid. Like I said, if I click on a link which was suppose to open in a new window, it should open in new tab instead.
    Thanks.

  • Ever since I updated to Firefox 4.0, I can no longer open links in a new tab by holding ctrl and clicking the link. Any help?

Ever since I updated to Firefox 4.0, I can no longer open links in a new tab by holding ctrl and clicking the link. The only way I can open a link in a new tab is if I right click a link and select "open in a new tab" in the dropdown menu, but ctrl + click is so much easier and faster. Any clue how to fix this?

Some other users have fingered the Ask toolbar as the cause of this problem. You can try disabling or removing it here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions
    Does that help?

  • Ever since I updated, I can no longer right click on links, choose "Open Link in a new tab" and expect it to do anything at all. WTF!

I should note, I am using the latest version as of today, I am using the portable version, and I have a TON of addons, a list of which I can post if I have to. Any Ideas what could be causing this? I use the "Open link in a New Tab" option every single day. I don't want to have to hit some special button to do so like my current temporary workaround with tab mix plus, I miss the old method, the option is still there in the context menu, but it won't do a single thing ever :(. Also not working is "Open Link in This Tab" and "Open Link in Duplicated Tab" (Not that I ever use those ones so who give a F). "Open Links in New Tabs" Still works though, but not for single links, so its not an ideal workaround. I can't afford to simply reset the browser, my settings, my addons, everything would be gone. I could back it up with FEBE but then I would be right back where I started. :(

Guys, I should wrap this up and let you all know so this page may help those experiencing the Firebug Context Menu Glitch. It's messed up, that was one of my favourite programs :(. Now looking for a version that doesn't do that.

I click a link but it doesn’t open. Instead I get a popup saying “Open the link in a new window,” “Open link in a new tab,” etc. How can I kill this popup or whatever it is forever?

That happens if the server sends the file as text/plain.
You can see this if you open "Tools > Page Info > General": Content-Type: text/plain
Files send this way will always open in a tab.

This code in userChrome.css will move "Open Link in New Window" to the top of the context menu.

the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
    1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
    2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
    3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
    4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
    5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

since the latest update of 3.5.11, firefox opens links in a new window. it used to open links in a new tab. how can i fix that?

The setting in "Tools > Options > Tabs" only works for links that would open in a new window.<br />
That option allow you to divert such calls to a new tab.<br />
For other links you either have to use a middle click or a Ctrl + left click or use the context menu.

  • I can't open links in a new tab after the latest update

On certain websites where links open automatically in a new tab, such as Gmail etc, the tabs are empty and all of them have this strange address in the address field:
    jar:file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/omni.ja!/chrome/browser/content/browser/newtab/newTab.xul
On Gmail not a single link works properly, all the links from the black bar, (Documents, Calendar etc...) and links in emails, they are always opened like this. It never happened to me in previous versions of Firefox.
I will be grateful for any help..
P.S. I don't have the Ask.com toolbar installed and never had..

  • How do I set Firefox preferences to automatically open links in a new tab (just like Firefox3) ?

For example, when clicking on a link from a Google search, how can I have the link open automatically in a new tab as opposed to replacing the current page ?

Hey, cor-el -- long time no see! Hey, I have a problem, & my brain isn't working well enough to suss it out at the moment. :(
For some reason in the last week or so, links selected from either bookmarks or address bar no longer open automatically on selection, plus google search has disappeared from the nav toolbar . (Don't ask "what add-ons have you updated?" I don't know, & the add-on manager says I haven't done any recently.)
I checked about:config for browser.search.openintab; value is still set true. I toggled it false, restarted FF, then re-toggled true & another restart -- no joy. :(
I'm running 7.0.1 (release channel) on my work machine & the latest 8.x beta candidate at home; both exhibit the same behavior, so I'm assuming it's not a beta bug. What am I missing? I know it has to be something simple, but my brain refuses to compute. I know I could use safe mode & successively re-enable my add-ons, but I don't really have the time or mental clicks available.
I'm hoping it's something simple since I really don't have time to plod through everybloodydangthing for the one bad value that I'm sure is causing it. :/
    Regards & Happy Monday!

  • Want to open links in a new tab not a new window.

When using a mouse I know I can middle click (wheel) and the web-link I am clicking will open in a new tab. I also know I can drag that link to the + sign on the tab bar and it will open. But while using the Keyboard only, when I want to open a webpage link in a new tab, it always opens in a new window, why?
I noticed while searching in Mozilla Support that hitting any box opens in a new tab ( this is the effect I want) why does this not happen on other webpages?
I may be answering my own question here but could it be the one 'NewsNow' website that is causing my problem?

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window for opening a link.
The browser.link.open_newwindow pref only affects links that specify a target window.
You can use the browser.link.open_newwindow pref to divert links that specify a target to the current tab or a new tab.
The browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction pref allows to divert (onclick) JavaScript window.open() links.
Links that do not specify a target always open in the current tab unless you override that with a middle-click or Ctrl (Mac: Cmd) left-click (new tab) or Shift left-click (new window).
There are also extensions that have options how a link is opened, so you can check out the Add-ons website.

  • Web page different from opening link in a new tab or new window from Google search results

I had been using another browser for a few months because I did not want to lose the web pages I opened within Mozilla. I began using Mozilla again after saving off the web pages. I see that Google's web page pulls in search results as I type in keywords, a feature I don't remember seeing with other browsers along with a magnifying glass icon, like a look ahead of what a web page looks like before clicking on the link.
With the list of search results, I click on the link and tell Mozilla to open the link in a new tab. I see the google icon, "loading..." or "testing...", then results other than the link I wanted. Those other results maybe bing.com, http://66.45.255.230/click.php?c=0920f96609cb269f1d0045095c09, http://superpages.iarbiz.com/o6gIoMdG6so=-tQ1LeOu1v0kY34rDZ|oRy8Xt294ACu6X, Info.com, Supermedia Reverse Proxy (http://superpages.iarbiz.com/o6gIoMdG6so=-tQ1LeOu1v0kY34rDZ|oRy8Xt294ACu6X)or whatever else. As for the link, I managed to press stop before being redirected.
This is with any search results listed.
    I thought it was Google.
    Changed to Instant is off.
Nope. Still the same issue. Have already gone after malware. Tried resetting the redirect value to 0.
Above results also occur when opening the link in a new page via right menu click.
Copying link location and pasting in a new window is displaying results okay.
When resuming use of Mozilla, an update was available and installed. Did not experience the above issues before the update.
Running version 3.6.12. Running Win XP Pro SP3.
Had to go back to IE and Chrome/SRWare Iron.
    Example:
    Google keywords: rental cars
Clicked on Ad: _Avis_Rent_a_Car_, link is Avis.com
Clicked on top search result: Hertz_Rent-a-Car_-_Rental_Car_Discounts,_Coupons,_and_Great_Rates (magnifying glass), www.hertz.com

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.<br />
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

  • When opening links in a new tab there used to be dots surrounding the link (made it easy to see your place on a list), this is gone in Firefox 4. Can it be restored or simulated?

I open new tabs from a lot of links that are in lists. In Firefox the link would be surrounded by dots when I opened the new tab which made it easy to know where I was in the list if I had to get up or even look away from the screen. This is gone in Firefox 4 and it's really annoying to have to try to keep my place in the lists all of the time. Can this be fixed?

I don't see it on lists like this one: http://www.creationsrewards.net/m/default.asp
if I right click and open in a new tab. It will work if I open link in a foreground tab but then it will switch to the opened tab then and I want to stay on the list page not switch to the tab page.
I am not technical enough with Firefox to understand the page that you sent. Can you explain what do if this can be fixed? If not are you able to pass it on to a programmer so it can be fixed on a coming revision?

    Hi,
