  • MIME files on MBP

    How can I open MIME files on MBP? Is there anything for it?

    MIME is actually originally an e-mail standard (it's the standard that, among other things, allows e-mail to contain stuff other than plain text, such as attachments, etc), though some elements of MIME types are now used by HTTP (= Web browsers). MIME encoding is most frequently a colloquialism for base64 encoding, the encoding standard that MIME specifies for binary attachments to convert them to a form that e-mail servers that could ordinarily only handle text, won't choke on.
    Stuffit definitely handles base64 encoding; not sure if it properly deals with all custom e-mail header data that programs may attach, though.
    If you're getting a MIME error message in a Web browser, then that probably means that the Web server you're trying to access is really badly configured; it could also mean that you're trying to do something unusual and you're missing a helper application, as NICKG117 suggested.

  • ~Can't open "noname" MIME files in Gmail~

    I've searched for this topic, but can't understand all the tech-speak! I'm in my 20s, so I'm not dumb, just not in the loop. Someone break this down for me in layman's terms.
    I use Gmail for my primary email. Lately, I've been getting attachments from family members who use PCs. These attachments are always called "noname." When I hit "download," I get a message saying that it is a MIME message and asking what application I should open it with. I always get a bunch of nonsense no matter what I open it with! It looks like it's trying to be HTML, but opening it with Firefox doesn't work. Neither does opening it with the StuffIt Expander.
    Even when I hit "View as text," it doesn't make any sense. I'll paste a copy below. Can someone please tell me what application to open up MIME files in?

    It sounds like gmail has serious problems with MIME data. That isn't something it should have trouble with. It has been solved for a long, long time now.

    Ordinarily, your e-mail program.
    I have a program I used to sell years ago when people started sending MIME e-mail messages that AOL couldn't understand. Perhaps I should update it if all the world is switching to gmail and gmail doesn't handle MIME either. 1996 is here again.
    Anyway, click here to download it.
    Technically this is a shareware program and technically I could make money from it. But very few people need this program anymore and it should work just fine for you in "demo" mode.

    This could be a Launch Services issue. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
    If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
    Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
    The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
    Side effects of System cache cleaning
    As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
    4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
    BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

  • How to open a file in the correct characterset

    Apex 3.1 running on OracleXe
    I have a file which I open using an onlaod before header process (similar to the way excel files are opened).
    I set the Mime Type in the header process on an apex page
    OWA_UTIL.mime_header ('Application/Octet', FALSE);
    -- Set the name of the file
    htp.p('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="'||:P12_FILENAME||'"');
    -- Close the HTTP Header
    owa_util.http_header_close;and then generate a query via a stored procedure which I write out using the following routine
    (It is done this way as the file needs to be written to the client machine rather than the database server).
    Procedure Dump_Query_To_File(P_Query                In Varchar2,
                                 P_Display_Titles       In Varchar2 Default 'N')

        dbms_sql.describe_columns(l_thecursor,   l_colcnt,   l_desctbl);
        For I In 1 .. L_Colcnt
        Loop
            If P_Display_Titles ='Y'
            Then
                If I < L_Colcnt
                Then
                    Htp.Prn(L_Separator || '"' || L_Desctbl(I).Col_Name || '"');
                    L_Separator := ';';
                Elsif I = L_Colcnt
                Then

                    htp.ps(chr(13));
                End If;
            END IF;
            Dbms_Sql.Define_Column(L_Thecursor,   I,   L_Columnvalue,   4000);
        End Loop;
        L_Status := Dbms_Sql.Execute(L_Thecursor);
        WHILE(dbms_sql.fetch_rows(l_thecursor) > 0)
        LOOP
          l_separator := '';
          FOR i IN 1 .. l_colcnt
          Loop
              Dbms_Sql.Column_Value(L_Thecursor,   I,   L_Columnvalue);
              If I <= L_Colcnt
              then
                  Htp.Prn(L_Separator || L_Columnvalue);
                  L_Separator := ';';
              end if;
          End Loop;
          htp.ps(chr(13));
        End Loop;
       dbms_sql.close_cursor(l_thecursor);
    End Dump_Query_To_File;When I vew the file in notepad I can see a string Annulé
    but when I open it in wordpad this gets converted to Annulé.
    Ideally what I need to do is open the file using characterset WE8MSWIN1252
    and write to the file using the same characterset.
    My database is in AL32UTF8 (ie XE universal Edition).
    So far the information I have is that owa_util only accepts charactersets when the mime type is of type text.
    This however still results in the file being written with the incorrect characterset.
    Edited by: Keith Jamieson on Oct 27, 2010 12:16 PM

    Small update.
    I created a database with a western european characterset We8MSWIn1252
    If I use utl_file to write out the code on the database server it gets produced correctly in Ascii format with the accented charcacters.
    As soon as I try and write out the code using owa_util.Mime_header and htp.p the code is written in UTF8 format.
    I did try and write out the header specifying a western european characterset but it seems that if it encounters an accented character it automatically switches to utf-8 mode. If there are no accented charcters the file is produced in ascii format.
    Really stumped on this one.

  • Can not open linked files - word documents

    Hi,
    Currently running SLED10sp1 with Adobe Reader 7.0.8 at a school. Some educational CDs use PDF documents with links to various files on the CD, especially word .doc files.
    For example, one of the CDs has a start.pdf file in the root of the CD. When you open it it has a menu of a couple of categories. When you click on one of the categories it open activities.pdf which has an index of various subjects.
    When you click on one of the subjects Adobe Reader says "Adobe Reader could not open 'act-01-01.doc' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
    Click "OK" - the only option.
    Adobe Reader says "The application "/media/path/do/act-01-01.doc" is set to be launched by this PDF file. The file may contain programs, macros, or viruses that could potentially harm your computer. Only open the file if you are sure it is safe. If this file was placed by a trusted person or program, you can click Open to view the file."
    Buttons available are "Do not show this message again", "Do Not Open" and "Open".
    Clicking Open does nothing.
    When double clicking act-01-01.doc file from Nautilus it opens fine using OpenOffice.org 2.1's Writer.
    When running Adobe Reader from the command line the following output is generated when clicking on the link to act-01-01.doc:
    sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `)'
    sh: -c: line 0: `DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 ; export DISPLAY ; ( ) &'
    Then when the "Open" button is clicked:
    sh: /media/0731401689/technology/activities/chap01/act-01-01.doc: cannot execute binary file
    The "Allow documents to open other files and launch other application" tick box is ticked in the Preferences.
    Can someone please help.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Rob

    Thanks Salil, that works for one CD, the other CDs have spaces in files and directories and it looks like Adobe Reader doesn't know how to deal with the spaces.
    For example:
    In a terminal I execute:
    acroread /media/MQ_9_NSW_5_3_SE/PDF/MQ9\ NSW\ 5_3\ Tech\ files.pdf
    When I click on any of the links that link to a word doc files Adobe Reader exhibits the exact same behaviour as in my initial post.
    This is the path of the file Adobe Reader tries to open:
    /media/MQ_9_NSW_5_3_SE/Technology files/MQ9 NSW 5_3 TI GC programs/TI GC word docs/010-CoinflipTI.doc.
    When I click open, this is what echos in the terminal:
    sh: /media/MQ_9_NSW_5_3_SE/Technology: No such file or directory
    I hope there is a workaround for this because the mime fix only helped me with 1 out of about 10 CDs.
    For Adobe Reader to open Excel documents would I append:
    application/msexel; ooffice "%s"
    to /etc/mailcap?
    Thanks in advanced.
    Regards,
    Rob

    Most of the time this works, however some of the time we get blank PDF files (<10KB), and sometimes we get filled PDF files that we cannot open in Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 - we get the "file is damaged and could not be repaired" error.  However, I can view this "damaged" pdf just fine in the Chrome built-in PDF viewer, and I can open it using Foxit Reader and Nitro Reader.  And if I open it in one of those programs and then save it under a new name, I can open the newly saved file in Adobe Reader.  So why is it that everything except Adobe Reader can open this file?
    Here's one of these problem PDF files: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/65535781/PDF-112612-162749.pdf
    Can anyone help me figure out what's going wrong, and what we can do to fix it?

    Back up all data.
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How to automatically open csv files in Excel on imac

    I am migrating back from Google Chrome to firefox and would like to have the browser automatically open csv files to Excel on my mac desktop. The step to have them saved in the download folder and then go in an open it in Excel adds an unnecessary action. In the earlier versions of Firefox on my windows machine this worked as desired. Any help will be appreciated.

    The Yahoo Finance server sends the file with the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' header. This is a generic MIME type that doesn't describe the type of file. Therefore you will always see a download prompt, regardless of your download preferences.
    * [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/Security/Securing_your_site/Configuring_server_MIME_types What are MIME types? | MDN]
    To get around this issue, install the Force Content-Type add-on.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/force-content-type/
    In the Add-ons Manager, Extensions category, click the Options button next to Force Content-Type. Create two rules as follows:
    * URL: '''(.csv)$''' Old Content-Type: '''text/plain''' New Content-Type: '''text/csv'''
    * URL: '''(.csv)$''' Old Content-Type: '''application/octet-stream''' New Content-Type: '''text/csv'''
    You should then be able to select what you want to do with CSV files (i.e. open them directly rather than save), and check the "Do this automatically…" option.
    You're welcome.

    I have configured my SharePoint Farm to support .xmind file types
    Below are the steps I have done

    Added an entry in DOCICON.XML
        <Mapping Key="xmind" Value="xmind_file1.png" EditText="XMind Mapping Software"  OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments"/>
    2. Added an entry in htmltransinfo.xml
        <Mapping Extension="xmind" AcceptHeader="application/vnd.xmind.workbook" HandlerUrl="" ProgId=""/>
    3. Added a MiME type 'application/vnd.xmind.workbook' in the Inetmgr.
    Now, xmind files are getting detected, but I am not able to open xmind files in read only mode from IE.

  • Can't open PDF files in the browser. I've tried every fix mentioned and it still doesn't work!!!

    I have Windows XP. Using firefox as my browser. Suddenly, I can't open PDF files in the browser. I've tried all the fixes mentioned. Nothing works!!! Checked the plugin settings, checked Adobe Reader settings.

    I already fixed it. I never exited out of Firefox before deleting the mime file. it works now.

  • Can't open PDF files in safari

    I have a problem opening PDF files in safari
    50% of the time I get a error message:
    "could not launch acrobat." then safari quits,
    and the other 50% of the time:
    it safari does noting for about half a minute and then quits,
    it's not a problem with acrobat, because it does work in Fx and Chrome
    anyone knows what's wrong and, especially, how to solve it?

    There's a couple things you can try to view pdf files in Safari.
    Install Acrobat Reader 9 and it will ask if you Acrobat Reader to view pdf's. Close Safari, check yes and re-open. If AR9 is already installed, go to prefs/internet and and check yes in the box for 'display pdf in browser using......'.
    Alternatively, if Acrobat is opening the pdf file in Safari, and you don't like it (which I didn't), go HD/library/internet plugins and throw away the 'AdobePDFviewer' plugin, and restart Safari. I believe the Quicktime plugin then handles the pdf.
    You may also need to check the mime types in Quicktime. Open System Preferences/Quicktime/Advanced and open the Mime Settings button. Scroll to 'images' and check the box for pdf's.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't open avi files in quicktime 7.5

    When I try to open avi files with quicktime .5 i am told that Quicktime needs soe extra files and am taken to the quicktime page on appl.com What files do i need? Any suggestions welcome!

    'AVI' is a container which can house a variety of codecs.
    These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
    It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, 3.1, 3.1.1, QT 7.3, 7.4.x and 7.5 and OS 10.4.11.
    Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.11 and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from (you may need a different site for the US):
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
    Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
    Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
    (You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
    In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
    You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates up to and including 2008-003. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
    In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
    Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
    Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
    Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
    You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
    There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
    On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
    On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
    And now there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash should be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
    So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards):
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
    Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

  • Problem on opening pdf file in IE inline (through streaming method)

    Hello
              I had a problem opening pdf file at IE through streaming. I create a page
              that have a hyperlink to open the new window and talk to a serlvet. When
              clicked, this serlvet will stream a pdf file from the file server to serlvet
              output stream. And the pdf file will be displayed within the browser.
              The problem comes that I can see the Acrobat Reader trailer screen display
              but the brower show nothing. I click refresh button to that serlvet to
              reload then it come up the content.
              Is anyone have the same trouble on this and any solution will be

    Hello Rondy,
              You vae set mime type to application/pdf, which is good. But IE doesn't care
              of it !
              And I think your URL is too long because and I'm sure it leads to a buffer
              overflow (as they say at MS in their bug report).
              So as a workaround, you can rename your servlet mapping from Ecd/Download to
              Ecd/Download.pdf if you can, or make the URL length much more smaller.
              Try to go to MS site to find what is the precise bug#. I can't remember what
              it its number.
              I hope you'll find a solution.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Bill,
    we already tried to change that checkbox that solves the problem but we get new problems with other applications, so this way is also no option for us.
    also we tried to repair / reinstall acrobat, but it has no effect.
    I suppose that maybe adobe just closed that door to open pdf documents with the octet-stream MIME-Type. Because it could an way to insert executable files in the system.
    maybe a higher version than 7.1 can do this?
    Thanks for your help, here in Germany it is already 2 pm so not far from quitting-time ;)
