'Open URL or file' - how to use a relative file path?

I have a click box on a slide that I want to use to open an instance of a file (ie a PDF, a JPG, etc) in a new window, then when the user closes the window the Captivate demo continues.
My plan is to distribute this file with the published project and have it sit in the same folder as the project files.
I think that I have worked out all the processes to do this except how to correctly set up the click box.  In the click box properties I have 'Open URL or file' on success, but how to enter the information in the URL text box is challenging me.  An absolute path to the file on my computer works fine.  Can I specify a relative path so Captivate defaults to using a file stored in the same folder as the published project?
I have attached a sample of the file I want to use.

  • Open URL or File not Working

    Hi
    I've scoured the forum and found some similar issues but not an answer to my problem.
    I have a button that launches a web page in a new browser window using "On success: Open URL or file". The Captivate files are published out as SWF and will be burnt to run from CD when I get this working. On my machines (I have tested on two computers) it works fine running locally, both off the hard drive and from CD. On my client's machines on their corporate network it doesn't work at all. There is no error message and the Flash security setting seem OK. When you click on the button nothing happens, zilch. I hope someone will be able to help with this one. Thanks in advance.

    Hi there
    I totally agree with you. It would be way cool if there were an easier way.
    Note that for CD-ROM/DVD, you can place a lightweight server (Server2Go) so that it tricks the content into believing it is being run from a server.
    Actually, you (and others) should Pepper the Adobe Wish Form asking for a simple replacement that works with CD-ROM/DVD that would ship with Captivate and operate as a button push to create the files needed.

  • Open URL or File Action not working (Captivate 7)

    I have written dozens of training courses using Captivate that employ buttons to open PDF documents (supporting documentation). I am currently coding smart shapes as buttons, specifying the Open URL or File action, or by executing an advanced action to do the same. The documents are found in a subfolder (documents), so the URL/File target is: \documents\<file name>. Same syntax that I have used for several years. However, once published using Captivate 7, these buttons no longer work. I have exhausted my methods for opening files without success. Any ideas?
    BTW, I am publishing as .exe, so the SWF security snafu should not be the issue.
    Thanks
    Jack L

    The issue has been fixed in the patch released in November. The latest version is 7.0.1.237.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/kb/captivate-7-patch.html
    I guess you need to publish your file again after you apply the patch and test it once to ensure everything works fine.

  • Problem with opening URL (articulate) file in Captivate 3

    Hi,
    I created a Captivate 3 file, hoping to link an Articulate .html file if I click on a button.
    I created a text button:
    On success: open URL or file
    URL: Z:\Tutorial\WebsiteTutorialReviewandSurvey_09_03_10\quiz.html
    If I publish this file, I am able to play this file on my computer or any computer that is mapped to this drive. However, when I open the file on other machines, where this drive is not mapped, then the file cannot be opened. The file will be sent to other users who will not have access to my local drives, so I'm not sure how to set up my URL directory.
    Can someone please help???
    - is it the directory? "Z:\"
    - I've also changed that to start off as \\servername\Tutorial\WebsiteTutorialReviewandSurvey_09_03_10\quiz.html = this also does not work
    Thank you so much!

    Hi, You most likely will find help at this Forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_captivate/adobe_captivate_general?view=discussions &start=0
    Also when you first open your thread here on the Flash Forum, you'll see a section to the right "More like This" that may be helpful as well.

  • The Open URL or File function is not working when I publish as a exe?

    The Open URL or File function is not working when I publish as a exe.  I have tried putting the exe in the same location as the files with no luck.  How do I get the buttons to function properly with a exe file.

    Have you set the Publish folder as a trusted location in Flash Global Security?
    If not, please read this post:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-troubleshooting/how-to-set-up-flash-global -security
    It may explain your issue.

  • Open URL or File not working for standalone exe

    I've tried lots of different things here...
    I have one movie, published as standalone exe (windows). In
    Preferences, I have "Open URL or File, and enter the next movie
    name - movie_2.exe.
    I have tried using a front or backslash in front of the file
    name.
    I've confirmed the files do both exist in the same directory.
    Symptom:
    They publish fine, and I can click on the exe to run it, but
    when it ends, it seems to be looking for a site...I get a browser
    window that opens, and a please wait, while it looks for
    http://movie_2.exe/, then a "Page
    cannot be displayed".
    Any hints?
    Thank you!

    I don't much use EXE output because of its limitations, but
    others do, and the situation you are describing
    is
    covered, with what appears to be a satisfactory conclusion, at this
    link. Hope this helps.

  • Drop-down Menu to Open URL for File Download

    I am using Adobe Captivate 5.5 and was wondering if it is possible to create a drop-down menu that can be used to open different URLs for file downloads, kind of like the Attachments button Presenter has. Captivate seems to have a dropdown widget available but I can't tell if this would work for this purpose.

    Hi Theo
    You can use any composition to create a menu with setting for show target on rollover and then link targets to specific pages.

  • Error opening URL-local files-mac

    I'm using a var and an Array code on an empty move clip. The code is set on an "Actions" layer. The code checks good. All files are on my desktop.
    When I test movie I get 'Error opening URL 'file:///Andrea/Users/user/Desktop/BosigerWk6/swfs/one.swf'
    I'm on Mac running CS3. Flash setting is set to "Access local files only" I searched hours for a solution to this problem.
    Please help. Here's the code:
    //your swf list can be anything and any length. I named them one two three so you can easily test that it works
    var swfList:Array = new Array("one.swf", "two.swf", "three.swf", "four.swf", "five.swf", "six.swf", "seven.swf", "eight.swf", "nine.swf", "ten.swf", "eleven.swf", "twelve.swf", "thirteen.swf", "fourteen.swf", "fifteen.swf", "sixteen.swf", "seventeen.swf", "eighteen.swf", "nineteen.swf", "twenty.swf");
    var i:Number = 0;
    loadMovieNum(swfList[i], 1);
    //where next button has an instance name of 'nextBtn'
    nextBtn.onRelease = function(){
        i++;
        if(i > swfList.length - 1){
            i = 0;
        trace(swfList[i]);
    //your load funtion here like loadMovieNum(swfList[i], 1); or instance name.loadMovie(swfList[i]);
    //where previous button has an instance name of 'prevBtn'
    prevBtn.onRelease = function(){
        i--;
        if(i < 0 ){
            i = swfList.length - 1;
        trace(swfList[i]);
    //your load funtion here like loadMovieNum(swfList[i], 1); or instance name.loadMovie(swfList[i]);
    Thanks you so much,

    I had a problem to test my movies locally in Flash Professional CS5, too. When I turned off the encryption on my Mac, the problem went away.

  • Open URL or File button not working.

    I am using VMWare on a Mac running Windows XP with Captivate 4.
    I am trying to essentially put a link at the end of my elearning to have them jump to a URL.  I've switched over to a dell running XP.  I've created a new project and tried to recreate just the last slide, i've created another new project and tried to just make a open URL button but none of it works!
    any thoughts?

    Hi Patrick
    We can all honestly give thanks to those that like to wreak havoc on our computers. Malicious Hackers
    For it is Security reasons we face the difficulties we do.
    Try the link again. I initially pointed you to the wrong anchor. (Sorry - My bad) Basically it's a Flash Player security thing. And it only happens when you test locally. Once things are on a server (as they usually are) the issues tend to become total non-issues)

  • Converting URL to file path

    I have a file in one of the folders of my webapp running in Tomcat. I need to convert the URL to the file to an absolute file path so that I can read it.
    The URL looks like
    http://localhost:28080/tester/custom/reports/transform.xsl
    I tried creating a FIle object:
    File file = new File(url.getFile());
    But file.getAbsolutePath() returns
    C:\tester\custom\reports\transform.xsl
    It should be:
    C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\tester\custom\reports\transform.xsl
    Any ideas?

    ok, i succeeded in using URL to get stream as
    follows:
    String path = getBaseUrl() + "/" + "custom" + "/"
    + "reports";
    String hostname =
    InetAddress.getByName(InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHo
    stAddress()).getHostName();
    String urltest = "http://" + hostname + ":28080" +
    path + "/transform.xsl";
    URL url = new URL(urltest);
    InputStream xsltStream =
    url.openConnection().getInputStream();
    where getBaseUrl() is a function that return the
    context name
    But another related question? How do I get the port
    number.How do you get the port starting form where? From the URL? If so, URL has a getPort method.

  • How to use PKCS related classes?

    Hi,
    I am happening to deal with PKCS7. The client will send me (the server) a PKCS7 envelope and I need to decrypt and/or get data like certificate, etc from the PKCS7 envelope. Are the required/related classes not part of Java API? We use 1.4.2_06. Do I have to use/buy/download any special API to deal with pkcs?
    This link http://java.sun.com/products/jce/jce122_providers.html says one needs to buy one of the listed Cryptographic Service Providers. Did any one deal with PKCS? If so what did you use/buy/download? Is there any information on net on how to use those APIs - examples, samplex, documentation, etc?
    Thanks in advance for help,
    -Pramodh

    You can use the BouncyCastle JCE provider to use PKCS7 objects. It is free. David Hook's book "Cryptography in Java" provides numerous examples of how to use the BC libraries with PKCS objects.

  • Naming Buttons - Problem with using Captivate 7 Buttons to Open URL or File

    After spending too much time troubleshooting a button problem, I discovered the importance of naming each item in a Captivate project.
    For some reason I have yet to figure out, publishing to SWF from Captivate causes buttons to function arbitrarily. In my case, I had eight buttons pointing to external URLs, three that worked and five that didn't. All of the buttons pointed to the same external website, only to different PDFs hosted on that site. Each button was named with the default "Button_X" convention as set by Captivate. After trying lots of different settings adjustments, On Enter and On Exit actions, and Play/Pause timings, I did what I should've done from the beginning; changed the names of the buttons.
    Why this worked? I don't know. I've seen hints on other discussions as to SWFs not working well when there are a lot of unnamed or default-named items. If there's some logic to this I would be happy to know it, but for a default setting to cause such a bizarre problem is beyond my comprehension. I could understand if I had named the buttons incorrectly, but I didn't do anything to them; I left them with the names created by default.
    Hopefully this helps someone else resolve a similar issue and, if anything, encourages everyone to follow best practices and use a clear file naming conventions for all projects.
