Openbox 2 issues

Hello,
I have in my autostart.sh file sth like this
wicd-gtk &
tint2 &
start-pulseaudio-x11 &
kupfer &
nitrogen --restore &
And the problem is that kupfer and wicd are opened twice when I log in. I check and in Kupfer I disable option to auto start in wicd-gtk I can't find option to set auto start. Nitrogen set properly wallpaper and after1 second it is turned to blue colour.  I need to type again nitroge --restore & to set correct wallpaper. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Actually, at least with stalonetray which I use, wicd-gtk doesn't need to be in the autostart file to have the icon in the panel, just put wicd in the daemons in /etc/rc.conf.
The blue screen appeared for me yesterday after updates. If only I could remember WHICH updates. Conky, stalonetray, transparency etc work, just nitrogen doesn't load wallpaper automatically except for a second. Also I THINK some screen fonts have changed (firefox, folder and file titles in thunar). It's not the nitrogen autostart because the blue screen appeared when I removed it from autostart.sh.
Can't find anything indicating problems in the xorg log or in .xsession-errors...

  • Openbox issues: URxvt and Trash

    Hi folks,
    I am migrating from XFCE to Openbox, and I have a couple of issues bugging me.
    1) URxvt does not load .Xresources automatically as it does with XFCE. I have worked it around by adding
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources &
    to my autostart. Is there any better solution out there?
    2) I can't get Trash and other mounted devices to show up in Thunar's left panel as they do in XFCE.
    Thunar-volman and gvfs are installed. I use LXDM as a login manager.
    thunar --daemon &
    is in autostart.
    Any ideas?
    What makes me scratch my head is that my crunchbang laptop using Openbox and Thunar does not have these problems.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    thank you for your answers.
    So problem 1) is solved.
    Straight to 2): Polkit-gnome is installed and xinitrc is the vanilla from skel:
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    And yes, I use LXDM. So, how do I get Trash and volumes to show up in Thunar?

  • Openbox issues

    Hello all!
    Sorry, if I wrote to the wrong topic, I've just registered, and I'm pretty new at arch forums.
    I used Openbox for around a year, and recently I have some issues. The first is: whenever I scroll in a Java scrollpane with the scrolling wheel, the contents of the pane becomes "jagged".
    This artifact is only present at horizontal scrollpanes, and the content becomes clear, if I scroll away with the buttons then back. And this issue is only present in Openbox.
    The second problem is more problematic to me. When a new window pops up (e.g.: when I create a class in Netbeans, or refactor something), the created window doesn't refresh until I move or resize it. Then it repaints itself dynamically.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance

    skottish: thanks for the idea, I tried it, but it didn't worked The issues are still there
    drcouzelis: Almost every Java application that utilizes a horizontal scrollbar. E.g.: Minecraft Schematica. I tried all applications in GNOME and KDE, and they all working perfectly. But I prefer using Openbox.

  • Weird OpenBox Issue (Or, What is This, I Don't Even)

    Howdy y'all.
    I have no clue as to what is happening here. My GUI is freaking out randomly. It might be related to feh, but I'm not sure. I'm using OpenBox with the standard feh bash script for a rotating wallpaper.
    Does anybody know what this is? I would have looked it up, but I have no clue what to call this.
    Here are some screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/C4PKt#1VTKo
    As you can see, it seems to be buttons, images, and scrollbars that seem affected, but sometimes, it'll be my entire desktop background.
    Help would be much appreciated, thank you.

  • Two openbox issue

    hi to everybody,
    i have two little problem:
    1- since recent 3.5.0 version, openbox introduced "environment" file; from their wiki i see that need for export variables. so what is the difference put export here or in my usually .bashrc ????
    2- despite i have the dropbox.desktop file in my ~/.config/autostart/, openbox doesn't start it; also with command:
    /usr/lib/openbox/openbox-xdg-autostart --list OPENBOX
    says me that should be loaded .....any ideas ???
    thanks

    yes, i've forgotten to write it in the first post:
    if i try to start it both
    dropboxd
    or
    /opt/dropboxd
    or
    /usr/bin/dropboxd
    from terminal all is ok
    dropbox start as should without any error
    the problem is the openbox/autostart system side !

  • [solved] openbox: "ghost" window with bbpager

    I don't really know where to report this bug as it was working fine a few days ago, so I'm just going to check if I'm the only one having problems with bbpager.
    Basically, when I'm using bbpager outside of the dock/slit, everything's fine.
    But when using bbpager -w, if I close everything, the last window still appears in the pager:
    impossible to move it, but it's still there.
    Once I open a new window, everything's working again, the "ghost" window dissapear.
    Strange thing is, if I run a 2nd instance of bbpager without the "withdrawn" option, the one in the dock behaves correctly: the docked bbpager stop drawing the remaining window.
    I tried with the default config files for both openbox and bbpager with no luck.
    Problem is I have no idea how to check what's wrong with it, and unable to find another pager with autohiding feature (which is why I put bbpager in the dock).
    Does someone has the same issue, or any idea of what I could do to solve this problem?
    Thanks!
    This is unrelated and solved:
    Edit:
    Just realised something else:
    I'm using "windows" + Tab as a "Super alt-Tab", ie switching between tasks on all desktops, and not just the current one.
    If I'm on a desktop with no window open, no problem, I just choose the window I want and I'm transfered to the correct desktop.
    Problem is once the window gets focus, windows tab isn't working anymore: I can choose another window (I see the icons, can move between them, see the border...), but I'm not transfered to it.
    It doesn't do a thing.
    But if I do "show desktop" first, no problem, it's working again...
    Edit2: AAAAaaaAAARRGGH! downgraded to openbox 3.4.7 fixed the "windows + Tab" issue, but not the bbpager one!!!
    I'm completely clueless.
    Edit3:
    Just reinstalled openbox 4.3.8.
    Did it with Pacman -Rns openbox + rm -r ~/.config/openbox, then pacman -S + cp /etc/xdg/openbox ~/.config , just to be sure.
    Same issue with "windows tab", but... It's working with firefox, I don't know why!
    I can switch between different firefox windows, even if they're on different desktops!

    Solved the openbox issues: installing openbox-git and modifying the new default rc.xml manually (don't use obkey as it's not working well with openbox 4.3.8), everything is working as expected.
    Still, I still have the bbpager issue...
    Edit:hmmm.
    No idea why, but after a pacman -Scc and a new install of bbpager, no ghost window anymore...
    Solved.

  • Curious key binding issue with Openbox

    I'm learning about setting up key bindings for actions in Openbox. One of things that I wanted to do is to have the root-menu and client-list-combined-menu set to keyboard shortcuts. This part I borrowed from a post in the forums and it does exactly what it's supposed to do:
    <!-- Keybindings for root menus -->
    <keybind key="W-z">
    <action name="ShowMenu">
    <menu>client-list-combined-menu</menu>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="W-x">
    <action name="ShowMenu">
    <menu>root-menu</menu>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    The issue comes when I don't want to select something in the menu. Esc will clear it just like it should. But, The Caps Lock key on my system which is remapped to Esc won't. It works like an escape key everywhere except here. Any ideas on why?

  • [SOLVED] (None-issue) OpenBox seems to be using too much RAM

    Hey all,
    I turned my computer on, and I decided to see what sort of RAM my lightweight Openbox install uses.
    I opened a terminal, typed top, and saw the memory was almost 400mb...
    I don't have any panels, or any Conky. I have a background, that's about it for eyecandy.
    The odd thing is, in the list after the top command, nothing seems to be using anymore than 0.1% Memory (I have 4GB RAM)...
    I did install KDE not long ago, but I thought I'd gotten rid of all that by now (My first thought was maybe some of the background processes from KDE were still installed), so I'm not sure what to think right now!
    I know it's a ridiculously broad problem, but I can't help thinking it's probably something I've installed that came with a load of other stuff I wasn't interested in (I had that issue a bit ago, had lots of Gnome dependencies installed along with a program) But the only thing I can think of is KDE or Gnome stuff, both of which I'm about 99% sure i got rid of.
    Is there any way I can check EXACTLY what's using my RAM? I know 400mb out of 4GB doesn't sound a whole lot, but considering I'm essentially running a blank screen I think it's a bit fishy!
    Thanks for any replies.

    Like I said, 'top' command showed a nice long list of processes, none of which were breaking 0.1% MEM usage. X did pop up as 1.3% but then it'd disappear not long after.

  • Openbox and proxy issues[Solved]

    I am using openbox as my wm. I am facing a proxy issue.
    I have added two functions in my .bashrc (based on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Proxy_settings):
    function proxyon(){
    echo -n "username:"
    read -e username
    echo -n "password:"
    read -es password
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    echo -e "\nProxy environment variable set."
    function proxyoff(){
    unset HTTP_PROXY
    unset http_proxy
    unset FTP_PROXY
    unset ftp_proxy
    echo -e "\nProxy environment variable removed."
    but after login when i run the command 'proxyon' and then launch firefox from openbox menu, firefox doesn't pick up the env variables but if I launch firefox from the same shell where i run 'proxyon' command firefox picks up the variables perfectly.
    I have tried adding:
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    to .bashrc directly still launching firefox from openbox menu doesn't pickup proxy settings.
    Also I want to know how do I add proxy exception for a perticular url.
    Last edited by jaideep_jdof (2011-01-31 11:00:05)

    Try adding them to .bash_profile. I think .bashrc is only read when launching a shell.
    Edit .bash_profile, then log out and log back in to test it.
    If nothing else works, you can write your own wrapper script for Firefox and launch it via the script in Openbox, e.g.
    #!/bin/bash
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    firefox "$@"
    It might not be the most elegant solution, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

  • Openbox mpv issue

    Hello hello,
    I'm having a problem with mpv on openbox (well, after trying the mpv bugtracker and inspecting some things, Openbox seems to be the culprit rather than mpv) and wanted to know if I am the only one.
    https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/1343
    Basically, this video isn't played at the exact dimensions unless I pass the "--no-keepaspect-window" option to mpv (visible because of the crisp bitmap fonts). If I'm not the only one, I'll at least have given a solution.

    It's weird that it happens just with mpv though. Use xwininfo on any other window, it'll show correct dimensions. Use it on mpv, it'll show height being one pixel short (if the video is 640x360, xwininfo will show "Height: 359"). mpv will thus compensate the video width according to this incorrect height, causing the mess.
    Looking at it in a different way: My theme has a titlebar of 22px, and then 1px borders on left/right/bottom. If I open some application with a size of 640x420, the entire window (including decoration) will be 642x443. As it should be: 22px titlebar + 1px bottom border, so add 23 to the application height.
    But with mpv, using a 640x360 video, the entire window will be 642x382. It should be 642x383 !! No matter how you slice it, openbox creates the mpv window with its height off by one. I'll try a hack, add +1 somewhere in mpv's code
    Edit: Had a look at mpv's verbose output:
    [vo/vaapi] Window size: 640x359
    [vo/vaapi] Video source: 640x360 (640x360)
    [vo/vaapi] Video display: (0, 0) 640x360 -> (1, 0) 638x359
    [vo/vaapi] Video scale: 0.996875/0.997222
    [vo/vaapi] OSD borders: l=1 t=0 r=1 b=0
    [vo/vaapi] Video borders: l=1 t=0 r=1 b=0
    Yup, like I said, mpv compensates for the off-by-one window height.

  • [SOLVED]Openbox shutdown issue

    I have added shutdown and reboot capabilities to a standard openbox menu. The reboot works fine but the shutdown has some issues. When I select "Shutdown" my X stops responding and the only thing i can do is kill X (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) and then issue a shutdown command manually.
    This is my relevant openbox menu entry
    <menu id="quit-menu" label="Quit">
    <item label="Log Out">
    <action name="Exit">
    <prompt>yes</prompt>
    </action>
    </item>
    <item label="Reboot">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>sudo shutdown -r now</command>
    </action>
    </item>
    <item label="Shutdown">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>sudo shutdown -h now</command>
    </action>
    </item>
    </menu>
    and I have added this line at the end of the sudoers file
    inxsible ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown
    Why is it that reboot works and shutdown doesn't?

  • Openbox config issues

    I need a few things answered or some help please. I am trying to get openbox set-up nicely but have a few problems
    1. Can you still have auto-mount feature like in gnome when I put in a cd or a thumbdrive and it mounts and has a icon in my thunar or nautilus file manager. This isn't working for me in openbox. I set this in my autostart.sh:
    gnome-mount &
    gnome-volume-manager &
    I saw that in someone elses and thought that is what it does.
    2. I used thayer's settings for xcompmgr and it works great for everything except urxvt. urxvt leaves shadow trails if I move or resize it. Any ideas on that?
    3. Is there a tray icon I can use for a battery monitor maybe the one from gnome I just don't know how to call it. I don't really want to use conky.
    Thanks for any help.

    1. Can you still have auto-mount feature like in gnome when I put in a cd or a thumbdrive and it mounts and has a icon in my thunar or nautilus file manager. This isn't working for me in openbox.
    pacman -S thunar-volman
    Then go into Thunar's preferences and you'll see an option in the last tab for volume management preferences.

    I have experienced this sometimes too, but not consistently.  It may have something to with urxvt prefs in ~/.Xdefaults, but I can't say for sure.

  • Issues mounting USB devices in Thunar under Openbox

    Basically, whenever I attempt to mount a USB device in Thunar, I get a message that says:
    Failed to mount "4.0 GB Filesystem

    My .xinitrc looks like:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
    It works when I use GDM to start openbox, but when I use slim, it fails no matter what I try. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

    Check for *.pacnew files in '/etc/pam.d/' (specifically /etc/pam.d/slim.pacnew).
