OPenbox Config

I have somehow managed to get openbox installed alongside Xfce4 ..I have installed obconf,pyxdg,feh. I am greeted by a blank screen which I know I have to configure ..On right click , I get the menu with all Hard coded entries none of which I have installed in my machine....(like Rhythbox,Rox,Thunar,Openoffice and a host of other programs)....
1. I  tried running ob conf which presents me with a nice menu with themes like clear look , Olive etc...However, all these do not change the theme on a whole ..Only the colors of the windows and background I think changes..What is the point ?? Like windows I thought the entire outlook right from wallpaper , Icons , Cursor , fonts etc would get changed...But unfortunately it is not so.. I managed to set a wall paper ....But the whole damn thing is so empty!!!
I would like to have Icons , Panel , Menu (Taskbar having icons like wireless, battery , sound (mute/umute)...The respective Icons for openbox, Thunar , Multiple effects for popping windows (slide,fade etC) etc (Just like PCLinuxOS to be precise!)
I see people are making their openbox look very beautiful
I would like to know , is there any comprehensive theme at least to cover 50 % of my expectation
Currently it is pathetic and if it doesnt work I will mostly switch back to Xfce4 which atleast gives me a decent interface! (if not like KDE) ...
Also the images are not sharp... I have Nvidia driver , Say for ex , when I start KDE the images look crisp and sharp.....Others inc GNOME are kinda fuzzy
Can anyone guide me through this ?

It may answer your questions.
... is a really good place to get started.

  • Openbox config issues

    I need a few things answered or some help please. I am trying to get openbox set-up nicely but have a few problems
    1. Can you still have auto-mount feature like in gnome when I put in a cd or a thumbdrive and it mounts and has a icon in my thunar or nautilus file manager. This isn't working for me in openbox. I set this in my autostart.sh:
    gnome-mount &
    gnome-volume-manager &
    I saw that in someone elses and thought that is what it does.
    2. I used thayer's settings for xcompmgr and it works great for everything except urxvt. urxvt leaves shadow trails if I move or resize it. Any ideas on that?
    3. Is there a tray icon I can use for a battery monitor maybe the one from gnome I just don't know how to call it. I don't really want to use conky.
    Thanks for any help.

    pacman -S thunar-volman
    Then go into Thunar's preferences and you'll see an option in the last tab for volume management preferences.

    I have experienced this sometimes too, but not consistently.  It may have something to with urxvt prefs in ~/.Xdefaults, but I can't say for sure.

  • Help - Looking for Openbox or OB/Xfce solutions [SOLVED]

    I'm considering dropping GNOME (again) and switching to lightweight WM (Openbox) and/or DE combo (Xfce/OpenBox).  I really like how easy Openbox is to use and I've read several OB-related threads here, trying to determine how other folks optimize it, but I'm still left with questions that I can't seem to find answers to.  I'm looking at using this setup on my Dell 6400 notebook which is currently a GNOME-centric desktop, with the exception of K3b, K9copy and a QT-frontend for VirtualBox.
    The top 5 features I'm hoping to keep are as follows:
    1. GUI-based SSH
    Currently I use Nautilus to quickly browse remote servers, but is there a standalone GUI commonly used, or should I just get use to the shell?
    2. Hibernate/Suspend support
    In addition to basic powersaved functionality, GNOME offers options at shutdown or via gnome-panel.  Does OB and/or OB/Xfce has something similar?  When I tried Xfce in the past, I could never get the power management options to appear on the shutdown screen.
    3. GUI-based volume management
    I know Thunar can do this, but what do standalone Openbox fans use to quickly mount/unmount volumes?
    4. Font hinting/antialiasing
    Xfce can do this, but what about a standalone Openbox config?
    5. Multimedia hotkeys
    This should still work with Xmodmap, etc. but is there anything else I should know about?
    If anyone can help shed some light on these topics, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Since Openbox is only a window manager, it does nothing in the way of hibernation or suspension. However, as long as you have ACPI working, you can still suspend/hibernate very easily. On my laptop (macbook) I simply put an option in my menu to suspend the machine by running my suspend script (which is basically "echo mem > /sys/power/state" with some commands to load/unload necessary modules and daemons)
    3. GUI-based volume management
    I know Thunar can do this, but what do standalone Openbox fans use to quickly mount/unmount volumes?
    Thunar is my file manager of choice. It is lightweight, yet fully featured. I've used Thunar with Openbox for quite some time.
    4. Font hinting/antialiasing
    Xfce can do this, but what about a standalone Openbox config?
    As mentioned above, Openbox is completely separate from your fontconfig.
    5. Multimedia hotkeys
    This should still work with Xmodmap, etc. but is there anything else I should know about?
    What [vEX] said. I use this method with xmodmap to get my apple remote working with MPD
    When you use Openbox, and only Openbox, you start to realize that Desktop Environments add no additional functionality, only convenience. On the other hand, they can also muck things up by being proprietary and at times overly complicated. KISS.

  • Where is the best place to put programs to start on X/Openbox startup?

    Hi,
    There are several places to put programs to startup when you start X or a WM.  I'm using Openbox and presently have placed these into my .xinitrc file, but I'm not sure this really the best place.  Openbox has a autostart file, which sorta looks like a better bet.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hadn't heard of consolekit; it's not clear to me from looking at their website what it's supposed to be offering? Maybe after it matures more, the documentation will improve, and all will become clear.
    When I used Openbox, I just launched everything such as conky from the Openbox autostart file. I guess if you had a weird set up such as some of your Openbox configs sitting on unmounted partitions, their mount commands would go in .xinitrc, otherwise autostart.sh seems better.
    Just IMO of course, do what you want on your own machine :-)

  • I See A Lot of Openbox Use Here

    I noticed with Arch many people seem to use Openbox. I like it from what I have only seen in screen shots. My Question is is I am a little confused about Openbox as a WM. I am trying not to confuse WM from DE. I read the Wiki and just want to make sure I understand that Openbox is equivalent to Metacity or GTK2? If I am mistaken, I apologize. Can someone please correct me if I am wrong.
    If I install Gnome, Gnome is my DE but then what is my WM by default?
    If I install XFCE, I know XFCE is my DE but what does that use for a WM by default?

    ArchArael wrote:I use openbox and xfce4-panel so I don't use much of xfce. I also use thunar, terminal and exo for preferred application settings.
    Does this mean that you have Openbox started via your .xinitrc and then rely on your openbox config to load a panel etc. Or you have xfce started with openbox as a replacement shell.
    I tend to switch between a full xfce and a bare openbox depending on what I'm trying to get done or what kind of work I'm doing, so being able to have a nicely configured middle ground sounds pretty ace to me.
    EDIT: That's an awesome link as well,  thanks ArchArael
    I use .xinitrc only for starting openbox. All other programs I need to start with openbox are in .config/openbox/autostart.sh. Everything I need is started by this script. Have a look:
    # D-bus
    if which dbus-launch >/dev/null && test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"; then
    eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
    fi
    #enable ctrl-alt-backspace terminate x
    setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp &
    #export de environment
    export DE=xfce
    #export openoffice.org environment; fix theme
    export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome
    #set modify some key mappings
    xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap &
    # start a terminal
    terminal -e fish &
    #set wallpaper
    nitrogen --restore &
    # start panel
    xfce4-panel &
    #start network applet
    wicd-client &
    # start battery applet
    batterymon &
    #start screensaver
    gnome-screensaver &
    I don't use a desktop with icons. If and when I need to manage my files by using the mouse I usually launch thunar. I find that using shell makes my home folder more tidy.
    You are welcome.

  • Using Other People's Openbox Settings [SOLVED]

    So I looked around beforehand, and have been reading the openbox wiki over and over again, but I'm a bit stumped.  Basically, I want to copy this guy's (http://dotshare.it/dots/956/) openbox settings.  There is a download for the code, and the file is named "themerc."  To me, it looked like .Xresources code, so I tried there first, but there was no affect on openbox, and so I tried again in the "rc.xml" I copied to create a user-specific openbox config.
    Complete arch beginner, so sorry if that wasn't worded particularly well.
    Last edited by scionix (2015-04-10 06:48:58)

    That's for the openbox theme.  You need to place the themerc (and optionally xbm images for close, minimize etc.) in ~/.themes/<theme_name>/openbox-3/ directory.

  • [solved] openbox: "ghost" window with bbpager

    I don't really know where to report this bug as it was working fine a few days ago, so I'm just going to check if I'm the only one having problems with bbpager.
    Basically, when I'm using bbpager outside of the dock/slit, everything's fine.
    But when using bbpager -w, if I close everything, the last window still appears in the pager:
    impossible to move it, but it's still there.
    Once I open a new window, everything's working again, the "ghost" window dissapear.
    Strange thing is, if I run a 2nd instance of bbpager without the "withdrawn" option, the one in the dock behaves correctly: the docked bbpager stop drawing the remaining window.
    I tried with the default config files for both openbox and bbpager with no luck.
    Problem is I have no idea how to check what's wrong with it, and unable to find another pager with autohiding feature (which is why I put bbpager in the dock).
    Does someone has the same issue, or any idea of what I could do to solve this problem?
    Thanks!
    This is unrelated and solved:
    Edit:
    Just realised something else:
    I'm using "windows" + Tab as a "Super alt-Tab", ie switching between tasks on all desktops, and not just the current one.
    If I'm on a desktop with no window open, no problem, I just choose the window I want and I'm transfered to the correct desktop.
    Problem is once the window gets focus, windows tab isn't working anymore: I can choose another window (I see the icons, can move between them, see the border...), but I'm not transfered to it.
    It doesn't do a thing.
    But if I do "show desktop" first, no problem, it's working again...
    Edit2: AAAAaaaAAARRGGH! downgraded to openbox 3.4.7 fixed the "windows + Tab" issue, but not the bbpager one!!!
    I'm completely clueless.
    Edit3:
    Just reinstalled openbox 4.3.8.
    Did it with Pacman -Rns openbox + rm -r ~/.config/openbox, then pacman -S + cp /etc/xdg/openbox ~/.config , just to be sure.
    Same issue with "windows tab", but... It's working with firefox, I don't know why!
    I can switch between different firefox windows, even if they're on different desktops!
    Last edited by Tekrotzen (2009-12-12 12:07:24)

    Solved the openbox issues: installing openbox-git and modifying the new default rc.xml manually (don't use obkey as it's not working well with openbox 4.3.8), everything is working as expected.
    Still, I still have the bbpager issue...
    Edit:hmmm.
    No idea why, but after a pacman -Scc and a new install of bbpager, no ghost window anymore...
    Solved.

    Hey guys, thanks for the quick response!
    Openbox-menu comes from AUR and the menu.xml is a copy of my Archbang installation. And yes, openbox-menu works like a charm on Archbang. So what am I missing?
    Here is the menu.xml:

  • An experiment in theming

    I've recently been playing around with theming various aspects of my Arch setup and it turns out that finding a set of elements from around the net that work well together (and look consistent..ish) isn't as easy as it sounds.
    So, I've decided to challenge myself to create a substantial collection of overall 'themes' that are functional, consistent and look good for the Windows-ers (I'm moving to University in a fortnight. Nothing says 'ooohh' like a good desktop setup ). Anyway, how could I possibly do that without offering my spoils to the ever-awesome Arch community?
    DISCLAIMER: These themes are a collection of icon sets etc made by other people that I've collected together in, hopefully, pleasant ways. The only aspect of these that was made 100% by me are the conky setups, unless I say otherwise.
    Think of this like the (excellent) Ghost's Workshop threads - just with tricked out conkies. These all use Openbox and the CAW! Panel, btw.
    Without further adieu, Theme 1: ThoughtfulCheetah.
    Conky Features
    Main:
    Quick script to print a random, semi-amusing slogan on first run.
    Color-coded cpu percentages - normal, high and 'She cannot take anymore, cap'n!'.
    Similar color-coding for the top output (that's cpu, mem and io - bottom right)
    MPD:
    Mundane first - function to truncate title/album names and add '...' to names that are too long.
    Semi-mundane - cover-art displayer (uses a database, but that lets me add other things)
    Cairo-awesomeness 1 - repeat/random indicator boxes in the top right.
    2 - vertically gradiented song progress bar.
    3 - status-meter on the right side - gradient moves down when playing. Still when paused.
    4 - 5-star rating system displayed by bottom boxes (see, told you the database was handy).
    Details will follow once I've found all the relevant configs in the file sea known as ~/. Hope you enjoy, you're the best community for anything I've ever seen.

    Relevant info:
    Wallpaper: Fractal Cheetah by This guy i believe. With a slight bit of hue altering to make it less orange.
    Mouse: Vanilla-DMZ - in community under 'xcursor-vanilla-dmz'
    GTK: MurrinaCandido - not sure, but I think I got it from murrine-themes-collection, also in repos.
    Icons: Eggshell, from here.
    Fonts: DejaVu Sans Condensed (repos somewhere) - size 8. Used DejaVu Sans Bold for the Openbox headings.
    Dmenu: Call this script with ' <script location> dmenu "#1a1a1a" "eaeaea" "000000" "cccdbc" '. You can also use mpd instead of dmenu for a music-based menu.
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ $1 == "dmenu" ]; then
    $(dmenu_path | dmenu -i -y '400' -p 'Run:' -fn '-*-terminus-*-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*' -nb $3 -nf $2 -sb $5 -sf $4)
    else

  • Lxde windows issues

    I am having an issue with lxde...  I just installed it and when I start up, the lxde desktop appears to load fine.
    As soon as I open a window,
    1.  It places the window in the upper left corner.  I am unable to move it or resize it.
    2.  In the windows title bar, the close, restore, minimize buttons are not there.....   This is on all windows that open.
    This is happening on two machines, my desktop and an older ibm t20.   The desktop has had Arch on it for a few months.  The laptop is a fresh install, and I was trying to load a lighter weight DE...
    Gnome is fine on both...
    Any ideas are appreciated..
    thanks in advance

    It appears the config files look ok???  Openbox is installed and "appears" to be set right...
    /etc/xdgl/lxsession/LXDE/default
    lxde-settings
    smproxy
    xscreensaver -no-splash
    openbox --config-file $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/openbox/lxde-rc.xml
    lxpanel --profile LXDE
    pcmanfm -d
    /etc/xdgl/lxsession/LXDE/autostart
    @lxde-settings
    @xscreensaver -no-splash
    @lxpanel --profile LXDE
    @pcmanfm -d
    /etc/xdgl/lxsession/LXDE/config
    [Session]
    window_manager=openbox-lxde
    If you think openbox is crashing, I will follow that....
    thanks

  • Multiple DEs, can I have different autostarts?

    Hey, all. I've got multiple desktop environments on my machine because I don't feel like sticking to KDEMod all the time. So far I've got KDEMod, Openbox, and XFCE installed. I'm probably also going to try out a couple of different configurations.
    My problem is that I really want compiz (really fusion-icon) to open in XFCE and Openbox, but not in KDEMod, since KDEMod 4+ can handle special effects on its own. I'm also using avant-window-navigator and want that to open in openbox, but not under any other DE.
    I've looked at the autostart manager for KDEMod, but when I disable some of the options, they're also disabled in XFCE. Is there a way I can separate these autostarts?
    Thanks,
    fxl

    openbox has it's own autostart file that has no effect on any other WM. Just copy /etc/xdg/openbox/* to ~/.openbox/config. What's going to happen if you try to replace openbox with compiz-fusion is beyond me though.

  • Conky doesn't evaluate string

    Hi,
    I use conky as a bar on the top of my desktop and I wanted to emulate the "workspace indicator" of awesome so I tried this :
    Openbox config :
    <desktops>
    <number>4</number>
    <firstdesk>1</firstdesk>
    <names>
    <name>${color1}home${color} web code misc</name>
    <name>home ${color1}web${color} code misc</name>
    <name>home web ${color1}code${color} misc</name>
    <name>home web code ${color1}misc${color}</name>
    </names>
    <popupTime>0</popupTime>
    </desktops>
    Conky config :
    ${eval $desktop_name}
    According to the conky manual it should parse the string and show a colored output but it doesn't work and I can't figure out why.
    Any help ?

    I set the update interval to half a second, and conky is started from the openbox autostart file. The $desktop_name variable works fine and prints the name but eval doesn't parse it as it should so it looks like this :
    ${color1}home${color} web code misc

  • [SOLVED] LXDE: no sound in thunderbird

    Just cleaned up my laptop by removing KDE, Gnome, and every other DE/WM I've managed to collect over the years. Now I'm running LXDE, and am so far delighted with how far it's come since the last time I tried it (several years ago).
    Anyway, I've got everything working just how I want it, except for Thunderbird/Lightning notification sounds. They just don't play. I installed pulseaudio and sound from other GTK apps (pidgin) works just fine, as does youtube, etc.
    I've read a few TBird bug reports that hinted it relied of ESD for sound. I only found ESD in AUR, though:
    aur/esound 0.2.41-3 (285)
        Enlightened Sound Daemon
    Previously I was using KDE4 and Thunderbird sounds worked, I assume via ARTS.
    Anyone have any idea?

    that problem is likely a bug in PULSEAUDIO, as pulseaudio is SUPPOSED to be a drop-in replacement for ESD.
    In KDE4 / QT Phonon takes care of the multimedia, and normally apps don't goto pulseaudio directly.
    Output is send to phonon, which then sends it to the chosen output device, which CAN be pulseaudio.

  • Gmrun always on top

    There is this problem when starting multiple apps in a fast sequence that the gmrun window loses focus when the program is launched. Is there a way to make the gmrun dialog be always on top? I have tried combining the ToggleAlwaysOnTop switch in the openbox config, but this obiously didn't work out...

  • Vlc & chromium contents persist across virtual desktops after -Syu

    I have just completed today's large pacman -Syu which includes upgrades chromium, vlc, a new kernel and nvidia blob  and many others.  On rebooting I  see that:
    (1) The vlc video window persists across across virtual desktops (although its frame is lost away from the desktop on which it was launched). This is using icewm as my WM.
    (2) The content of chromium tabs persist in the same way.
    Is anybody else seeing this please?

    This is interesting.
    I'm using openbox and I have the same problem when playing StarCraft II under wine. Just to clarify, I use the nvidia-drivers.
    I start it on my second vdesktop*, tab to the first one.. persists. Tab back to 2, tab to 3 (all fine), tab to 1 and everything stays fine.
    So I'd have to switch to 3, then to 1 to cleanly access 1.
    What the heck is going on?
    *Virtual desktop as in workspace. They are defined within openbox config.
    Edit: No one in #archlinux seems to know anything so far.
    Another edit: It only seems to happen when firefox is open on the desktop I want to access. Turning hardware acceleration off doesn't change a thing though.
