Openeing a pdf with native pdf reader: openwithdefaultapplication

Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help on this one. From what I have read AIR for android does not support openwithdefaultapplication. The device I am developing for , the Motorola Xoom does not support pdf viewing in StageWebView or the browser. I have tried stagewebview and navigatetourl witn no success. So is it possible to open my pdf's with the native pdf viewer, calling it from my flex mobile app, developed in FB4.5 Any tips/ links sample code on how to do this, if it is possible would be great.
Thanks

Just to let everyone know. The answer
Rangora gave was the correct solution for my purposes. I actually found this link (below) a while ago which takes you through it and gave me some inspiration. Its a java hack and not the prettiest solution. Lets hope Adobe and Android provide something a little more useful in the future
http://www.jamesward.com/2011/05/11/extending-air-for-android/
This (above) is if you want to open local files with the native/default application. I actually managed to extend this and get it to open a file with its default application (not just pdfs, any type as long as the tablet has a software that can open/support the type)
For the unitiated who have found this post: WebView is only good for loading webpages and pdfs wont load on HoneyComb devices this way. You can get PDFs to display in a browser with PDF plugin on Honeycomb devices, but only from a hosted file location (webserver) which wasnt any good for my purposes
The link above is currently the only way to open local files with their default application
Thanks to all for your participation

  • Why don't pdf email attachments not open in pdf reader?

I have a series 1 iPad running the latest ios available for that model. I have an email with some PDF attachments that I want to open and store in PDF reader however the only options presented are to read the attachments using iBooks or Kindle. Why is this?

Thank you. I tried installing adobe reader and it worked but it made me wonder why. I have the PDF reader created by Kdan and so I went on their website and found the following.
Unfortunately Apple's device has a limitation on the app number displayed on the open-in list and we are not allowed to change its order.
We suggest you delete some of the existing apps equipped the open-in feature to get PDF Reader available on the open-in list.
When I installed adobe as suggested, that appeared in 2nd place. I de-installed convert to text and I-can-print, which I hardley ever use, and sure enough Kdan PDF reader now appears in the list.
    Thanks for the lead

  • Firefox will not open Foxit PDF Reader

I am using Firefox 34.0 and Foxit PDF Reader 7.0.6.1126.
Until a few weeks ago, when I clicked a PDF file I was asked if to open the Foxit Reader or to download the file. Now the file is downloaded whatever I do. I have tried different options in Firefox, e. g. "Always ask", but nothing helps. What can I do to get back the possibility to open the Foxit Reader in Firefox?

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Hang when opening multiple pdfs: Reader 10.0.1 (Win Server 2008 x64 SP2)

I have recently updated Adobe Reader to the latest patch update 10.0.1.
Previous to this update, I was able to open multiple pdfs at once and had no issues with the Adobe Reader software. After updating to 10.0.1 I've noted that when I attempt to open more than one pdf at a time, Reader hangs (Windows indicates a "Not Responding" error has occurred). After a series of minutes, the second (or third, fourth etc) file opens, and Reader appears to function as per normal..
I'm running Adobe Reader 10.0.1 on a Windows Server 2008 x64 (SP2) box, and didn't have this issue with the 10.0.0 release..
Does anyone else share this issue, and if so, is there an update planned to solve the issue? I would also be happy to provide more diagnostics/specs if these will provide info for developers to chase down the issue here..

I also have Reader 10.0.1 (Win 7 Home Premium x32).  I can open several large PDFs (including one over 100 MiB) satisfactorily and then have the whole thing hang.  As I am trying to work with these documents, I have not been patient enough to wait for minutes.  I just have to terminate Reader and relaunch it.
I have removed some of my DLLs to stop Reader wasting my time preparing a long document for reading, which I do not need .  (It would really help if Adobe would provide a setting to turn this off, instead of my having to hack it. )
I never had any similar problems with Reader 9.  Did anyone test Reader X before releasing it?  I have read elsewhere that turning Protected Mode off may help but...

  • PDF not allowing me to open in PDF reader app

I email myself pdf's to save in unique folders I've created in PDF Pro. For some reason, single page pdf's are automatically opening as text in the email and i'm unable to open in my pdf reader. Any suggestins?

thanks so much for the insight.  i'm still trying to determine how to get the pdf to the point where i can edit it.  if it arrives as mixed media, i still can't access it.  is there a way to save a powerpoint as a pdf that isn't missinterpreted as a mixed media?

  • UAC alert every time I open a PDF - Reader 9.4, Win7/64

    Hi all!
I notice the blue Windows Defender shield icon appears over the PDF Reader icon. Every time I open a PDF file, or just open Reader, I get a UAC pop-up warning that the app wants to make a change to my computer. Is there a reason for this?
I also notice that I can't open any PDFs from the Web. If I try to open a bank statement from within IE, I get the yellow warning bar and then when I try to open the file, nothing further happens.
Hoping someone can shed some light on this - I can't seem to download 9.3 from Adobe, either. I've scoured the 'net and can't find a single answer to this - one other poor soul posted the same problem on another forum but had no answers.
    Anyone know what's going on?

The same thing just happened to me. A tech support person was trying to help me figure out why
I was having trouble printing to PDF. He changed the setting so Adobe would 'ru
n as administrator'. I had also been downloading a lot of updates....so when the UA
C alerts started poping up I didn't make the connection.
Go to C: Program Files (86)/Adobe      I then searched for  *.exe.........I went into properties and UNchecked run as administrator on the first couple .exe files. Seems to be working fine now.
    Good Luck

  • Looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements

I am looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements:
1- Open pdf starting from last page opened during last session
2- Be able to scroll between pages vertically (not horizontally like many current ones do). Vertical scroll should be a continuous smooth scroll without doing a sudden full page pull in. Should behave as if pdf is one single very long page.
3- Should be able to change width of page and lock it. Page should not move sideways. Page width should be remembered so when same pdf is opened, it opens in that width.
4- A fast scroll feature. Useful for pdf's with hundreds of pages.
5- Nice to have feature: when opening the pdf reader, it automatically opens the last pdf file on the last page read.
I have tried all the free pdf readers in the AppStore and none met all these requirements except for two which had these issues:
1- iRead limitation: When screen is touched for more than a second, the page is frozen (locked) and page can't be scrolled. Scrolling is done when doing quick swipes only
2- FileApp limitation: Does not remember last page opened. Does not remember last width set. Fast scroll doesn't work properly when width is other than default.

    iAnnotate additional points
iAnnotate works with DropBox to download and upload edited PDFs. It does all the other same things, email, USB, and iTunes etc. but it also can download PDFs from any web site.
You can transfer hundreds if not thousands of files at one whack using the AIJ Utility on your desktop.
If you transfer a large number of files you have to plan not to use iAnnotate a while as it has an index function that indexes all the text into a master 'dictionary' so it can do searches for data and find PDFs for you. This indexing takes hours if you transfer hundreds of moderate size PDFs at one time.
The biggest PDF I have feed it was a Gimp manual at close to a thousand pages.
Remember the scratch pad ram is only 256 MB in the current iPad. You can cash iAnnotate if you do something really dumb with such a large file. Other applications also grab and hold onto chunks of this ram in the iPad so it is best to force a memory reset before doing anything that is going to max out that ram.
iAnnotate allows you to have more than one PDF open at a time and you can tab between all the open PDFs in a blink just as you would in a tabbed web browser.
If you zoom a page larger than the width of the screen it slides around. Less than the width of the screen the page locks in the size while scrolling which is smooth between pages.
iAnnotate is a very well made product for dealing with PDFs. Annotations display in Goodreader and in the Mac OS Preview.

  • Creating a pdf reader edible form that can submit.

So I am fairly new to Adobe acrobat, but I created a pdf form and saved the form to be reader-enabled so anyone can open the form and fill it out and then email the form back.
The problem I am experiencing is when the pdf form is saved with reader and then emailed to my company, all of the fields are invisible.  They only become visible when clicked.
The problem is this is item order sheet with 50 or so fields and we are starting to get more of these pdfs emailed to us.
I see that I can add a submit button and add a mailto: action, but then I am unable to save the form adobe reader enabled.
The sales guys don't won't to publish a form on adobe form central and want to just send the customer a file they can have filled out with whatever they have: mac, foxit reader, whatever and then send it back.
Is there a way to fix the pdf reader enabled so it doesn't make all the fields hidden?
    or
Is there a way to have a submit button and have the form be opened by pdf reader without requiring them to fill it out in acrobat?
    or
Am I going about this correctly or is there an easier alternative?
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

You can't have it all. Some PDF viewers, like the Preview app on the Mac, corrupt PDF forms when it saves them, causing the behavior you're seeing. Adobe Reader/Acrobat won't do this. For more information, see:

  • Default PDF reader

    Hello
I have an N97 Mini, bought SIM free. I use it as a mobile office.
    Two problems:
I have installed a freeware PDF reader, and the trial version of Adobe Acrobat (now expired) came with the phone (I think - it may have installed when I bought a license for Quickoffice). I have set the freeware PDF reader as the default (Settings>Phone>Application Settings>Default apps.>Options>Advanced Options>) but it resets back to the trial Adobe app. I want the Freeware PDF reader to stick as the default reader.
Also, I'd like to remove the Adobe Acrobat trial, but I can't find a way todo this.
    Suggestions, please!
    Thanks.

You can't remove any of the 'trial' stuff it's embedded
As for default pdf reader, the only workarround I know is to save a pdf file, then open the pdf reader and select file from there !
    Good Luck

  • TimeoutException - when calling web services method that opens a PDF

I am updating a legacy program which uses Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional.  The idea is that the client will call web service methods, which handle opening a PDF, reading from or writing to the PDF, saving if necessary, and closing.  It then returns the data (if reading) to the client.
The only issue with this that I'm having is that the client will pause for about 60 seconds, and throw a TimeoutException.
I know that the method on the web services end is working, because I wrote a quick driver which calls the very same method, but it executes normally, and works perfectly.
My question is basically, is there anything that would cause the client to hang/freeze when calling the web services method to do this task? Everything is running on my workstation, and I've debugged to see that the filename being passed is the same in both tests.
    Thanks!

Thank you, I somehow missed seeing that subforum. I reposted it in that forum instead. This thread can be deleted/closed. Thanks!

  • Iphone4 and PDF Reader issues

Just recently when I download any movie clip from an email it downloads and will only open in PDF Reader by Kdan and of course a movie will not open in a PDF Reader. Please can anyone help me???? Thank you.

Well, I took off PDF reader then it wanted to open it on mover+ so I deleted both out of the iphone. Now "mpg" and "wmv" will not open on my iphone4 from an email attachment. Am I right to say that these extensions will not open on any iphone? These now have the Quicktime icon on them. Thank you for your help.

  • How to open a pdf in its native reader in iOS using AIR?

    Hi there,
I am wondering if there is any feasability of opening a pdf directly in its native reader in iOS environment. I needed this to happen from an AIR application.
I have found that AIR can be extended using a java program to do the above task for Android.
    here is the link: http://www.jamesward.com/2011/05/11/extending-air-for-android/
    Thanks in advance,
    Sris

    Thanks everyone for the solutions.
After working all the possibilities to open locally saved file on iPad
    1. StageWebView
    2. navigateToUrl
    3. file.openWithDefaultApplication();
    4. Java socket extension for AIR,
    I finally found a solution.
    StageWebView works on ipad.
the code that works is as suggested by xperiments.es.fr
But the problem I faced was saving the pdf and opening the locally saved file.
Since iOS does not support desktopDirectory & documentDirectory, I tried to save the pdf in applicationDirectory/applicationStorageDirectory, that didnt work when I tried to open the pdf from those locations.
So the only way was to store the generated PDF in a temporary directory and StageWebView could locate and load that
    It works!!!
Now the next challenge is, while the desktop (Windows) compilation of the app shows PDF reader with menu options, which does not show on iPad app. IPad app shows just a page index on left-top corner. It would be good if the options are shown as well.
    Lets see!!!
    Cheers,
    Sris

    What is your operating system?
Open a PDF from where?  If online, in what browser?
