OpenGL, games, choppy freeze-frames [solved by pacman -Syu]

I have this problem but so far it's only in OpenGL games.  Probably because they are the only thing capable of demanding much from the CPU.  It affects games played in wine as well as native ones.  The application running is spiking when the graphics lag.  Xorg, however, is not spiking in CPU load, nor is anything else.  And I'm not running out of memory, either.  I'm running a bare-bones window manager with no composite garbage or anything.
I tried adding nopat to the kernel boot line, and I think I tried every xorg.conf setting the internet could help me dream up.  In my internet travels there also seems to be a fair amount of very similar issues related to ATI users, as well, but that's not to say their drivers aren't garbage, either.  They probably are.   Anyway, the issue seems to keep popping up in Ubuntu forums, probably due to Ubuntu's popularity.
I have found no remedy.  But then, I'm not the one to be weighing in.  I'm hoping to reign in some experts.   I'd love to know how to stop the freeze-frames in graphics-intensive opengl games.  They're somewhat unplayable if the frame freezes long enough to get pwnt.  I've spent a few days on this, so here I am.  Thanks to any suggestions or questions.  Willing to revisit my xorg.conf if necessary.
I'm using Everquest 2 in Wine, and I downloaded Savage2 last night to cross-test the situation.  Ayup.  Freeze-frame issue is less frequent, but lasts longer per incident.
System is 2.4ghz Athlon64 1mb L2 single core processor with 2gb of PC3200 RAM, and an AGP-based 7900GS video adapter.
One last question, how do I copy the contents of configuration files so I can paste them here.  My clipboard won't clear or accept contents from terminal apps.  Not sure which problem between those it is.  I used to be able to highlight the contents and then middle-click to paste.

  • [SOLVED] Failed pacman -Syu system update

I tried update pacman -Syu and gave me this message:
error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database)
if you're sure a package manager is not already
    running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    so I changed db.lck to db.lck.bac
and when I pacman -syu   pacman gave me this mesage:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    any Ideals?

  • [SOLVED] Did pacman -Syu and now gdm, gnome, and pacman won't work

Hi everyone, I did a search for my problem, but cannot find the solution. Basically, I updated my computer this morning and as soon as the packages got installed my computer crashed. I am using another computer right now. These were the packages that were upgraded: dbus-core, bluez, dbus, gsfonts, libcups, libgdiplus, mono, openssl.
So after I installed the packages, my screen went black with some error message (don't remember what it is now. I believe it was something about GDM not working.) So I rebooted and "rpcbind" and "File Alteration Monitor" failed. Then I got a bunch of Gdm error messages with "gdm-binary[46081]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors"  as the last message. I don't know how to check the X server log for errors so I logged in and tried pacman -Syu again. I got this error "pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: invalid ELF header." I also tried startx and gnome-session , but they both failed to work as well. It seems like I'm having a graphics error. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be appreciated.

Eivuwan wrote:Hi everyone. After some thinking, I realized that as attached as I am to Arch, I do not have as much free time as I did in the past to tinker with it. So I manually mounted my IPod and copied everything in my home folder to it. Then I installed Ubuntu. Maybe I'll come back to Arch one day, but for now, farewell. Thanks for all your help.
Wise decision -- Ubuntu is very stable (we used it extensively in my last place of business; I'm now retired). I've gone a different route, since I prefer to start small, build the environment I want and nothing more (which was my reason for choosing Arch). My preferred environment is pretty minimal -- no desktop system (no Gnome or KDE), just a window manager (dwm) and the apps I need. I did a test install in the last day or so and learned enough about Slackware (I first used it in the early 90s when it was pretty much the only Linux distribution) to convince myself that it will work for me. It's more of a pain to get the apps installed than Arch, certainly, but once you know how to do it and where to find them, it's not really a problem. But my objective is the same as yours -- get away from Arch's rolling releases. Again, as an old hand at both individual development and managing large software projects, what Arch is trying to do is difficult. Because the various components of the system are updated more or less continuously, it's impossible to thoroughly test the whole thing every time it changes. So on any particular day, you are likely to see problems, as happened to you, me, and other folks who have started threads in this category. And sometimes the problems are so severe you end up with a non-functioning system, as happened to both of us.
I would hope that, in the future, the powers-that-be at Arch would consider periodic, thoroughly tested releases, say every 6 months like Ubuntu and OpenBSD. The fundamental machinery of Arch is excellent (pacman, etc.), installation is easy, the documentation is adequate (I'm not as impressed by the wiki as others seem to be -- see the OpenBSD or FreeBSD documentation; what's available for Slackware is also very good). But I think there are tremendous quality hazards in the rolling release methodology, and forcing it on Arch's users is a bad idea, I think. It can be optional, for the adventurous. This is exactly how the OpenBSD people operate. There's a release every 6 months that is invariably rock solid. If they find problems after the release, they will make changes on a STABLE cvs branch. But you can also, if you choose, run what is on the cvs trunk, which they designate CURRENT, if you are so inclined and willing to take the chance on less thoroughly tested code. This is more or less equivalent to Arch now. I'm suggesting that Arch consider adding a STABLE version.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after kernel boot after pacman -Syu

Hi, after full system upgrade with pacman -Syu, I get after the kernel boot black screen and everything is freezing. Then need to manually shut down the power button!
Normally when my system starts up after the kernel boot I get straight to the command line terminal login.
Can anybody help me how to fix this? Any clues? Any advice is welcome!
The problem is solved by downgrading to kernel 3.6.11.-1
Many thanks for the help from the people on #archlinux !

What have you done about the errors being printed to your logs? You could start by fixing the network error and the broken udev rule...
Are you still using intiscripts? They are no longer supported: https://www.archlinux.org/news/end-of-i … s-support/
    # edit: not a pacman issue, moving to Newbie Corner
I have searched for many hours and days for solutions on the internet and forums, tried some things, but with no results! I don't know how to fix the errors! Do you know how to fix that? I'm a total n00b! I'm doing my best as I can! Need help, thanks!

  • [SOLVED]pacman -Syu sychronize failure

Following the Installation instructions I installed a cd iso on the 26th.
There are 3 other linux distros on the 80 G drive and arch booted up and everything seemed to be OK.
I uncommented 5 repo sites in the mirrorlist and tried to update pacman -Syu.
All I get is ( Transient resolver error )   failed to synchronize any databases.
15 messages in all, for all 3 types. I tried ftp and http as well.
More searching with only one thread marked SOLVED.
I rebooted again but still the same errors.
Where do I go from here?
Start all over with a new cd?

  • Frame sequence to quicktime ends up with freeze frames at end

I'm just using Compressor 3.5.0 to convert animation file sequence (24fps) into quicktime Proress422HQ (23.976fps). Any settings end up with freeze frame at the end of clip. I've tried 24fps to 24fps and still got same problem. Being curious, I've tried to convert to MPEG4, and still got the same problem. Originally the source format is PNG sequence, and I've convert the PNG into TIFF for test purpose. Still no luck. Does anyone ever experienced the same problem? Thanks for sharing.

Solved by changing the frame rate of the footage (image sequence) into any other frame rate, then change back to desired frame rate. In my case, after load the image sequence >check inspector of footage >change current frame rate (from 24fps to other fps) >change back frame rate to 24fps. Same bug in version 3.5.2. Hope it helps.

  • HELP! Why does FCP Crash when Batch Exporting Freeze Frames?

I have been Batch Exporting a lot of freeze frames recently but just last week FCP just started to crash when I tried exporting. It will let me export one single freeze frame but no batches. Also, when I open FCP now some of the freeze frames I have made looks what appear to be like green digital hits on them. I thought it was a space issue but I have plenty of room and I've taken out my FCP Preferences and nothing seems like it's working. I have final cut version 5.1.4 and the Error Message Reads: "The Batch Export failed for some items. Please review the status column to identify which items had errors." When I check the status it says "File Error: Unknown Folder" which I don't understand at all.
    Any ideas?
    Power Mac 10.4.10
    Power Mac

Well it seems like it might be an OS or hardware problem rather than a FCP problem, however...
Have you installed Diskwarrior on your startup drive? If not, do it, and try launching it from your startup drive and then try running it on all other drives.
Describe your hardware configuration (you should really post all your system specs in your profile here). Can you change the batch export destination to another drive? Describe what your source material is, your sequence settings and the export settings. You might try changing your export settings.
This is not normal behavior and I'm sure we can solve this.

Thank you.  That solved my same problem as well.
But on my screen the text scrolled  by so fast that i could barely read it and I could not scroll up to read the beginning.
how can I pipe the output so that it does not scroll so fast.  i thought this was the "less" command but when i typed:
    less pacman -Syu
    or
    pacman -Syu less
I got errors in syntax.  I am a noob coming from 1 year using Ubuntu.  I have worked thru many errors to get this far in the install.
The forums where down so I was on my own and had to use trial and error and the beginner wiki.  im glad now forums back online because i never woould have figured out this klibc error on my own.

  • Unable to change Still/Freeze Frame Duration in User Pref Edit tab

Process-selected new project, change Still/Freeze Frame Duration in user preferences on the edit tab.
Need to change to 10 minutes. Typed in the field 00:10:00:00. When I hit ok, I get a beep and it defaults back to what was in there, 01:00:00:00. So tried a larger number 02:00:00:00. Same result. A beep.
So went ahead with project and opened a sequence and tried to change it from the viewer. Same issue.
Trashed prefs and started from scratch. Same issue.
    Ideas?

    Trashed prefs rebooted originally.
Process as follows for trashing prefs. First time through I had opened a project. This time did not.
    Open Home Folder
    Open Library
    Open Preferences
    Delete com.apple.finalcutpro.plist
Open Final Cut Pro User Data
Delete Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
    Delete Final Cut Obj Cache
    Delete Final Cut Prof Cache
Run disk utility to repair permissions.
    Reboot.
Did not open a project this time.
Same issue but now I am able to put a slug in the time line and by selecting clip properties, can set the duration (was not able to do this before so some progress). Still can't set duration though as earlier described from edit tab on the user preferences page for still/freeze duration.

I wish to export several frames from iMovie as if they were images (like JPEGs or TIFFs). Is it possible to do this using iMovie, if so how? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've already managed to 'add a freeze frame' to isolate the desired frames but I can't export it. Thanks.

Ach... I found a solution thanks to previous posts which came to light after I'd posted what was obviously a question that had been asked before.

  • [SOLVED] After pacman glibc update, cannot find command bash?

A few days ago I ran into a problem after running pacman -Syu that ended up with an unbootable system.  I found this topic that ultimately solved the kernel panic-
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1127251
All that was needed was a symlink "/lib" to point to "/usr/lib"
My system now almost boots but luckily I can now get a to a shell (zsh).  The problem is that I can not run bash, and various other tools- including my desktop environment and pacman.
I have checked my $path, and have verified that I have the binary file "/usr/bin/bash" and a symlink in /bin/bash to point to that binary file, which does exist...
    % ls -l /bin/bash
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 May 24 23:43 /bin/bash -> /usr/bin/bash
    % ls -l /usr/bin/bash
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 738008 Mar 13 00:47 /usr/bin/bash
But when I try to start a bash shell or run a script
    % bash
    zsh: command not found: bash
    % pacman
    zsh: command not found: pacman
    % /usr/bin/bash
zsh: no such file or directory /usr/bin/bash
    % cat test.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "Hello World"
    % ./test.sh
zsh: ./test.sh: bad interpreter: /bin/bash: no such file or directory
I hope i was thorough enough in providing information about my system, but please let me know if there's anything else I left out that may be able to help.
    Thanks so much!
[SOLVED]-  Ended up mounting my system from a live install cd, and copying over each bash binary in my system with the live media's binary.

If it has only been a few months, that thread should have nothing to do with what you are experiencing.  That problem stemmed from when the filesystem was actually changed from having /lib as an actual directory to /lib as a symlink to /usr/lib.  Oh the problems that caused.  For me it went perfectly smooth... well I did have to search for and rid /lib of extraneous unowned files, but it was smooth after that.
You say though that you did not have a /lib symlink when you checked, and then you created it?  This is odd, as that is part of the filesystem package and therefore a tracked file.  Maybe you should start by reinstalling the filesystem package just to make sure that the necessary components of the filesystem are all in order before proceeeding.
BTW, you should really update more often than every "few months" as that is what using a rolling release is all about.  Also if you don't update very often still, never update the database (-Sy) without also updating the system (-Syu) as this will lead to partial upgrades, which can severly break your system.  So never do "pacman -Sy <package>" as that is the equivalent of doing just a "pacman -Sy" and then continuing on your merry way.  Big changes are in the air right now around these parts, so keeping your system up to date is probably going to be crucial in making subsequent updates as pain free as possible (we are heading towards the final /bin -> /usr/bin move!).

  • How do I export a freeze frame in CS4?

There's no longer an "Export/Frame" menu option in CS4 (as there was in CS3).
How can I export a simple freeze frame from Premiere into another editing program, such as Photoshop?
    Thanks.

I've torn out half my hair trying to answer the same question.  I think I have an answer and it had nothing to do with the many hours I've spent in Adobe's help and Forum to get an answer.  I had to figure it out myself.
Here it is:  Because CS4 handles HD video, they don't export straight to JPEG.  They export to TIFF which is higher resolution than JPEG.  That's my guess, anyway.  To export a frame grab, go to FILE>EXPORT>MEDIA.  On the top right side of the window in the Format box, click the down arrow to open the list and select TIFF.  Click Okay.
Another box will open up.  This is the Adobe Media Encoder window.  Yeah it's new to me too.
The file you are trying to export should show up in the box with all it's wonderful detail including where you want it to go.  If you want to change the name of the exported frame, click on the 'Output File' portion of the detail and a 'Save As' window will pop up and you can rename the file.  Otherwise, CS4 will give it a generic name for you and you'll have to go find it.
When you get done click 'Okay' and it takes you back to the Media Encoder window.  From there click on 'Start Que' and the file gets saved.  Click on the upper right X and the Media Encoder window closes.  There is no 'Done' or 'Close' button that I can find.
Somehow I got my file to save as a JPEG the first time but I'm unable to duplicate my steps now, so just know that it can be done and be willing to experiment a little from here.  If you click on Add, it offers the JPEG format but it's trying to OPEN a file instead of SAVE.  I'll have to keep working on that part.
I hope this helps.  These turkeys at Adobe should hire me as a troubleshooter and manual writer - I spend a lot of time trying to figure out things they don't document in the manual or help files.  As for the Forum - they can stuff that, it's useless.   This should be an exquisitely simple task - we all do frame grabs.  But they've made it into a monstrous chore.

  • How do I move a freeze frame from iMovie 11 as a photo into iPhoto?

In prior versions of iMovie, I could isolate a freeze frame or still from the movie clip and then move it somewhere and it would become a regular photo to be manipulated in iPhoto.  How do I do that in iMovie 11?

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.

What are your favourite OpenGL games you play under Linux?
Doesn't matter if they are open source, closed source, or run in Wine, but they must use OpenGL.
My favourite ones are Enemy Territory and NeverBall.

The list is always changing, but...
    DropTeam
    Tremulous
    Vendetta
    Frets on Fire
Savage and Savage 2 whenever that comes out.

  • Opengl games to be run under wine?

Hi all, does anybody has a list of opengl games made for windows?
I'm asking because it seems that they run very well in wine with little or no overhead, while dx games suffer from a good 25% penalty.
I tried Unigine in opengl, and it confirms that.
