Opening a Unix Exec file with Automator

So i downloaded a game called Starbound from Steam onto my mac. To host a server, you need to start the starbound_server Unix Exec file. This file opens in Terminal, and runs a bunch of stuff. So, on my mouse i want to create a Macro that allows me to launch it.
I want to create a service in Automator that i can assign a shortcut to which i can therfore set as a macro on my mouse.
So my question is, what do i do? The 'Launch Application' function won't open it, its greyed out when i go to find it. Is there any Automator function that will allow me to open this file?
For ease of providing answers, the file path is:
/Users/---/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/Starbound.app/Contents/MacOS/starbound _server
Any help appreciated!

Hello
You may try using "Run Shell Script" action with the following contents:
~/'Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/Starbound.app/Contents/MacOS/starbound_server' &>/dev/null &
which will run the executable in background.
The service workflow will look something like this:

When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • On iPad can I open a Microsoft word file with apple pages app?

On iPad, can I open a Microsoft word file with apple pages application?  If so how do I perform this activity?

Yes you can open Word files. If it is an email attachment you can simply tap and hold down on the icon and select "open in" and then select Pages - as long as you have the Pages app on the iPad.
Where is the file on your iPad or how do you want to move it to the iPad?

  • Can I open Indesign 2.0 files with cs6 or the newest version of cc?

I want to buy either cs6 or the newest version of cc.  I just need to know if I can open InDesign 2.0 files with either of these newer versions?

In theory, yes, but it's hard to predict what's going to happen with that big a gap in versions. I suggest you download a trial and give it a test, and if the file opens, the very first thing you should do is save as .idml. then open that and save as a new .indd without overwriting the original.

  • Opening Premiere Pro CS6 Files with Premiere Pro CS 4

I am wondering how it may be possible to open PP CS 6 files with CS 4.  There was an earlier listing to modify some code to change Version "25" to Version "24" for v5.5.  What would the number be for Version 4, if that is the
solution, or is there another method.  Thanks.

I think its a no show.
CS4 is way different from CS6. For starters CS4 is 32 bits.

If you are wiling to share one of these files via Dropbox, I have a few old Macs floating around that I can use to figure out what files these are, if they are not corrupted during the copying process.
Have you tried OpenOffice or LibreOffice?
If you can see the dates on these files, you can also try looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_word_processors to see what could have been used.
Do you recall the source machine from where these came? You have mentioned Classic II and SE 30.

  • Opening iPhoto 8 JPG file with Photoshop CS3 Camera Raw editor

I have all my photos stored in my iPhoto 8 library. I have both RAW (CR2) and JPG images. iPhoto 8 opens the CR2 images with Photoshop Raw editor, but I want to use iPhoto to open JPG images with the Photoshop Raw editor using Camera Raw.
How do I do this without having to export JPG images and opening from Photoshop?
    Thanks!
    SP

    SP:
If you're trying to use the RAW editor on a jpg it can't be done. It will only work on the RAW file. If you are wanting to edit the RAW file from within iPHoto with CS3 then set CS3 to be the editor of choice in iPhoto's general preferences. Next go to the Advanced iPhoto preference pane and select the option "User RAW when using external editor". That will open the RAW file with Photoshop's raw editor. When you finish you MUST save the new file to the Desktop and import as a new file.
For some general info on using Photoshop with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

  • Renaming files with Automator & Apple Spript

    Hi there!
I need the help of an expert in Automator & Apple Spript....
I've got to rename 500 files with the following names:
    001-001 firstfilename.jpg
    104-095a otherfilename.jpg
Any idea on how to get rid of the second number (that is 3 or 4 characters long, but always followed by a space) so to have something like:
    001 firstfilename.jpg
    104 otherfilename.jpg
    Thanks in advance & Ciao!

    The following script should work.
    IMPORTANT:
    1) The files whose names you want to change must all be in the same folder. That folder must be open, and it must be the front finder window.
(Also, no other files should be in that folder)
    2) Make a back-up of the files before you do this (just in case there is a problem. I hope the files are not too large)
    3) This should work if the file names are consistent. I have presumed that there is always a hyphen and a space ( ) and that you wish to keep the characters before the hyphen and after the space.
    4) Copy the script below into the script editor. When you have prepared 1 & 2 above then run the script. Good luck
    --Start of Script
    tell application "Finder"
set myFiles to every file of the front window
    repeat with Cfile in myFiles
set WholeName to the name of Cfile
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "-"
set WNlist to every text item of WholeName
set WNpart1 to first item of WNlist
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to " "
set WNlist2 to every text item of WholeName
set WNpart2 to last item of WNlist2
    set NewName to WNpart1 & " " & WNpart2
set name of Cfile to NewName
    end repeat
    end tell
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ""

  • Opening a Unix Executable File

I am a Mac newbie, switching from PC. I do embroidery digitizing and downloaded several embroidery designs in "zipped" format. When I viewed them in the Get Info dialog, they were listed as Unix Executable Files. When I tried to open one, a dialog box came up saying that I needed to choose a file to open them with. What program or helper app do I choose?
    Respectfully,
    Patricia

Sometimes ZIP files are made into self-expanding .exe files. When run on a PC, they will unzip without needing any unzipping software. They will not do this on a Mac, but Stuffit Expander may work with them

  • Unix Exec File .iqs extension

Can someone tell me what this file is connected to? It showed up in my documents folder. Here is the name as given in "Info" verbatim:
Kind: Unix Executable File 467kb in size Last opened January 14, 2004; no application associated with it to open it.
    Name and Extension:
    MainStringTable_GR.iqs
I haven't seen an .iqs file extension before and would like to delete this file if it isn't needed.
Thanks for any help on this
    Nicole

    First Google hit:
"The IQS file type is primarily associated with 'AmeriCalc' Mutual fund tax program. "
It seems safe to trash it. If you have doubts, you can always
just leave it in the Trash for a few days to see whether
    there are resulting problems.

  • Unlocking files with Automator

I have an external drive containing folders and files which were loaded from CD's. All the files are locked. Is there a way I could use automator to unlock all the files in a particular folder?

    A few different ways.
You could select all of them in the Finder and unlock (or lock) them in the Inspector, a variation of the Info window. Usually you would choose "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu. However, if you hold down the Option key, the "Get Info" changes to "Show Inspector". It's actually the same thing except you don't get a separate window for each file, but instead a single panel. (The panel will stay in view above everything else in the Finder, and will show info about whatever is currently selected.) Within that, in the General area near the top (below the Spotlight comments), there is a checkbox for locking the files. Just uncheck that to unlock.
Another option is to use AppleScript, perhaps inside a "Run AppleScript" action in an Automator workflow. You'd probably have one of the Finder's actions first, such as "Get Selected Finder Items" for anything you currently have selected in the Finder, or perhaps "Get Specified Finder Items". You'd then add Automator's "Run AppleScript" with the following:
    <pre style='border:2px inset #99f;overflow:auto;width:500px;padding:.5em;color:#000;background:#ccf';>on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat with theItem in input
set locked of theItem to false as boolean
    end repeat
    end tell
-- pass the items to the next action
    return input
    end run</pre>
(The line beginning with "--" is just a comment, so it's ignored and you don't really need it.)
On the other hand the above code is directly from the Automator action I made to unlock files and folders, which isn't much different than the other action I made to lock them. If you'd like to install the actions, you can download them from the Mac OS X Downloads page here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/lockandunlockfilesandfolders.htm l
Besides being a Universal build, I've included example workflows for locking (or unlocking) items in the Finder. They are meant to be saved as Finder plug-ins so you can right-click on an item (or group of items) and choose to lock/unlock from the Automator submenu in the Finder's contextual menu.
The Finder's contextual menu is also available with Control-click, or with the action button (a gear on it) in the toolbar of Finder windows. If I remember correctly, I've included instructions with the download on how to install the actions and how to save Finder plug-ins, if you aren't familiar with that already. Simply put, you install actions with Automator by choosing in the File menu "Import Actions...".
(There's also a bonus workflow I named " Edit Menu..." for easily accessing the workflows in the Automator submenu. It opens a Finder window with the location of the Finder plug-ins so you can rename them or open them for editing. Though, Spotlight can be just as good for locating them. )
So, there you go. Three different ways. Hopefully one of those will be appropriate.

  • My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:
    Original file:
    opened in InDesign CS6:
Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.
    Text in CS4:
As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.
Below the results when opening the CS4 file in CS6/CC:
I'm not sure if there are still people struggling with this problem, but hopefully was is this helpful.

  • Can you open an existing illustrator file with the application default settings?

I need to open a customers illustrator files that he sends me with the default application settings, not the setting he saved with his file.

    CS6 (Mac) but soon CC.
What is happening is they are saving the files with among other things, print scaling set to something other than 100%. If one of our operators does not catch it, the plate files are ripped at a smaller size than what they should be.
This customer does thier own production work and sends us "plate ready" files but sometimes forgets to change this setting back to 100% (he changes the scaling to something that will fit on a letter size page so he can check his separations).
I seem to recall (from years ago), there was a way to open a file using the applications default settings, not the settings saved within the file itself.
