Unix Exec File .iqs extension

Can someone tell me what this file is connected to? It showed up in my documents folder. Here is the name as given in "Info" verbatim:
Kind: Unix Executable File 467kb in size Last opened January 14, 2004; no application associated with it to open it.
Name and Extension:
MainStringTable_GR.iqs
I haven't seen an .iqs file extension before and would like to delete this file if it isn't needed.
Thanks for any help on this
Nicole

First Google hit:
"The IQS file type is primarily associated with 'AmeriCalc' Mutual fund tax program. "
It seems safe to trash it. If you have doubts, you can always
just leave it in the Trash for a few days to see whether
there are resulting problems.

  • Opening a Unix Exec file with Automator

So i downloaded a game called Starbound from Steam onto my mac. To host a server, you need to start the starbound_server Unix Exec file. This file opens in Terminal, and runs a bunch of stuff. So, on my mouse i want to create a Macro that allows me to launch it.
I want to create a service in Automator that i can assign a shortcut to which i can therfore set as a macro on my mouse.
So my question is, what do i do? The 'Launch Application' function won't open it, its greyed out when i go to find it. Is there any Automator function that will allow me to open this file?
For ease of providing answers, the file path is:
    /Users/---/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/Starbound.app/Contents/MacOS/starbound _server
    Any help appreciated!

    Hello
You may try using "Run Shell Script" action with the following contents:
    ~/'Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/Starbound.app/Contents/MacOS/starbound_server' &>/dev/null &
which will run the executable in background.
The service workflow will look something like this:

  • Downloading unix archive file (.Z extension) from java program

    Hi,
I am trying to download unix archive files with .Z extension from java program. When I use
    BufferedReader zReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(urlConn.getInputStream()));
and then read line by line and write it to file, downloaded file can't be decompressed. I tried to open it with winZip which supports .Z files but I get the message : Cannot open file, it does not appear to be a valid archive.
How can I download file correctly?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to decompress unix archive files (.Z extension)

    Hi,
I have successfully downloaded .Z file from net using urlConnection and InputStream class. Now I need to decompress that file. I have tried using java.util.zip package but it won't work.
    Please help.

Hi, I am not shure that tar.gz and .Z files are the same. They are both unix compressed files, but there isn't a package specifically for .Z archives. There are packages for zip files, Gzip, tar but for .Z files I can't find anything :(

  • Classic App "Seen" as UNIX Exec file

I have a "classic" database program I use. It's kind is listed as a UNIX executable file rather than the program itself. What can I do to change it so it will launch in Classic environment?
    iMac 600 Mhz Power PC G3   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   classic 9.2

There are no periods. It is a specialty database (CDM+) built on an older Omnis engine. For some reason, the back-up folder, including all components of the program, appear on the desktop as UNIX files, not the older OS 9 and previous application and support files. Makes me wonder if this is a resource fork thing.

  • What is an unix executable file that appeared in my folder?

    HI,
In my folders structure I have a folder named "jobs: where I put my working files etc.
Yesterday inside the "jobs" folder I found a file with the same name "jobs" , its icon is dark gray and it is a "unix executable file" with zero bytes...
    How was it created there?
I think I did a permission repair this week, but this is the first time I see a Unix exec file ...

    ** folder named "jobs:" **
When I tried to create a folder with that name, the Finder told me that the name was not valid. A colon in a Mac file or folder name used to be a bad idea. I guess it still is. I'd rename that folder to exclude the colon.

  • .mov files appear as Unix after recovery, adding extension doesn't work

    (Also posted in Quicktime forum)
Whilst backing up (with Synchronise X) a drive, I accidentally clicked to allow around 15GB worth of Quicktime files to be deleted, in two folders.  Realising my mistake, I stopped the back up immediately, and recovered all the files with Disk Drill.  One folder recovered correctly, however the other folder recovered the files as 'Unix executable files'.  I have tried adding the .mov extension to these files, tried opening from within Quicktime, but always get the error message that the files are not a movie.  I tried telling the file to open with QT in the Get Info windoww, still without success.  All the files are of a size which seem to be about right for what they are supposed to be, but I cannot get them to open as movies.
One observation: the files which recovered correctly all had '.mov' in their file names at the time of recovery, all those with which I am having a problem had no extension name showing.
I've searched through these forums and elsewhere - most people get the files to work by adding the .mov extension, but for me this is not the answer.  Are there any more tricks?

Thanks guys for your speedy suggestion, both of you!
I tried QT Repair, and when that was unsuccessful, moved onto Media Salvage, as suggested by QT Repair.  The final report was that the media was seriously corrupted, so I had no success.
It seems odd to me that the rescued files in one folder from the original delete are OK,  but those in the other folder are unrescuable, even though there was clearly no time to overwrite all those files before I cancelled the delete action.
Fortunately they are backed up elsewhere, 5,000 miles away, but that's another story.

  • Unix Executable Files...why won't they open?

I now have a new iMac and using Mavericks 10.9.3. I used TimeMachine to transfer my files (that contained these strange "Exec" files after I had updated to Mavericks on my previous iMac) a number of these files turned into something called "Exec" files (Black rectangular icon with green "exec" in the upper left corner). and randomly appeariing in diff software.  Have these files become corrupted? Should I trash them?
    Thanks for any help
    Julie

In the Finder, click on these Exec files and press command+I. If the file is an AppleWorks document (even with no extension) it will tell you that. If it is a UNIX shell script with owner+group+world execute permissions, or a compiled executable from source code, it will state that it is a UNIX Executable File.
In the Terminal application, you can use the file command to discern (usually) more accurately what these black Exec documents comprise. The filenames that I use below at random, were created on my machine.
    file -b dictx2
    Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64
    file -b mvim
    POSIX shell script text executable
file -b fubar.cwk            # Finder Get Info says it is an AppleWorks document, and opens nicely in LibreOffice
    data
The decision to delete these depends on what they are, the purpose they may continue to serve, and in the case of word processing documents, content for retention consideration.

  • Tugsten E2 /unix executable file

My laptop is a MAC power book G/O.S.10.4.11.
My external hard drive crashed. I recovered the info. The back up i had from last version of my desktop palm shows only the file mame i gave it -NON RECOGNIZABLE ICON. I'm not able to open it, when i drag the file into the palmdesktop icon it doesnt read it. On the File info says:
    KIND:unix executable file
I opened the file on microsoft word-officce 2004 and just appear like programming caracters.
I think I just need to add the file extesion in order the palmdesktop software read the file.
Do you know what the extension is?, or How to make readable opening it with the palm desktop sofware?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Hey!, I've re-installed palm desktop program and it didn't read the file.
In Mac, when a file is not readable, show's you a blank icon or in this case is showing a grey icon with green letters saying EXEC. That's why I think what I need is to add the correct extension to the file in order to be recognized by palm desktop folder.
    I'll  appreciate your help.
    Thank you.

  • How to use Terminal to Find or Locate files without extensions?

I'm conversant with the cli, but not a power-user.  I've discovered a fairly large number of audio files, across dozens of sometimes nested folders, that (somehow) lost their '.aif' extension and now appear as Unix Executable Files.  Upon appending said files with the proper extension, they are perfectly normal audio aif's.
My Problem: using the Terminal, how can I search a directory tree to find those files *without* an extension, discriminating between files and folders, and then append the correct extension to only the files?
I've tried a number of queries, mostly built around the idea of using 'filename.*', but for some reason searching for an extension omission (as opposed to a specified string) isn't so simple.
    The following: ls -al *.
Brings up 'No such file or directory'
And the following ls -al .*
    Brings up files AND directories
I need o discriminate between files and directories, finds all files without extensions, and rename them with the appropriate extension.
    Can anyone help?
    Best, Tom

The following will find files without a file extension in the current working directory and any sub-directories->
    find . -type f ! -name "*.*"
If you are confident that the files found are the appropriate audio file (in this case aif) then you could->
    find . -type f ! -name "*.*" -exec mv {} {}.aif \;

As for the "exec" files, by omitting the extension, you fooled the OS into thinking they were UNIX executable files.

  • UNIX EXECUTABLE FILES (S.O.S.  I've lost my data!!)

    Hey! This is what happened.
I bought my mac and I used it perfectly. After 6 months I decided to format the computer. I stored all my data in an external hard drive. I installed everything I needed, and when I transpassed the external drive's data to the MAC I got a bunch, a lot of EXEC or Unix executable files. I tried changing the extension but it says error, file corrupt or something. I'm really worried, HELP PLEASE!!!
    Thanks!!!

To save complete system data in a movable and relocatable form,
and have it seen as a system again, it should be either archived
as a disk image (disk utility can do this) and then reimported to
the computer later, or as a clone. Free-running clone utilities of
widely known worth include Carbon Copy Cloner, & SuperDuper.
    {You can clone the data off the computer, and then clone it back}
An external drive for storage should be formatted in a Mac
friendly format; though a windows format may work in a pinch.
I think the files you have, were changed due to a different one
on the external drive than the computer's OS would prefer.
Now that these files have been copied (by drag and drop?) to
another drive, they may be broken beyond repair or reuse.
The files not related to running the OS X or the apps may be
recoverable, since you probably had work or projects saved
and they may have copied over OK from the computer to an
    external drive...
Sorry, that I do not have an easy answer for this; perhaps another
reader may find they have a more adequate answer given the
    circumstances you now face.
    Best regards, in any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Writing to a unix system file

I need to write to a unix config file using Java, so I'm basically trying to do what sudo normally does. What is the proper way to pass the credentials and write to the file in Java?
This will be for a desktop application, so I'll be getting the sudo password from a swing element and then authenticating to allow writing a file.

You'll have to Runtime.exec sudo or a script that does sudo. You can't just directly have your Java code switch the identity of who's executing it midstream.

  • Old Quark files are now Unix Executable Files

I made hundreds of archive CD's with Mac's running OS 9 back in 1990's. They contain Quark files and .tif's. I've referred back to these CD's many many times over the years with no problems. My new iMac has the intel processor. I pop an archive CD in and all the files (with no extensions like "tif" or ".qkd" or ".eps") are now "Unix Executable Files" that won't open.
I simply add an extension to the images files (like ".tif") and they work. HOWEVER, it's not so easy with the Quark files. I add ".qkd" to the file name and it still remains a Unix file.
I launch Quark and try to open the file through the finder and it doesn't work. I took an archive CD to a friends house whose on a G5 and the CD worked properly with no extensions needed to be added.
So I figure the problem is with the Intel/PC based processor. I shouldn't have sold my old G5.
One forum claimed that a program called "File Buddy" did the trick for him. Does anyone have any other ideas other than me buying a non-Intel Mac.
I love our new iMacs but I need these archive CD's to work!
    Thanks

I automatically run OnyX once a week for maintenance, but it didn't help this situation.
Those chores won't reset the LaunchServices database. Go to the Maintenance heading and click on the Reset tab. Turn on the check box for "LaunchServices database" (all other check boxes off). Click the Reset radio button and then Execute. Restart your Mac.
OS X will automatically rebuild the database according to the applications on your hard drive, giving preference to Apple applications as they would be when you first install OS X. So if you have the Acrobat Reader set up to open PDF files, you'll have to do that again as they will be set back to Preview.
Actually it's .qxd not .qkd for Quark XPress file extensions.
That's it! I knew .qkd was wrong, but Quark 6.x won't show you the old extensions when you save a file, and I couldn't remember it (been using InDesign steadily for a while now).

  • Final Cut Pro Unix Executable file???  what do i do?

    Hey All,
So I wanted to dig up an old movie i edited in 2003 so i took out the old IMac. I found the Final Cut Pro 2 sequence on there but because all the footage (capture scratch, etc.) is saved to an external hard drive i need to reconnect the material to the sequence. i hooked up my WD My Book drive to my G5 to find the clips and sure enough i backed them up on this hard drive (37 gb worth) awhile ago but for some reason all the clips say they're Unix Executable Files? Why did this happen when i backed them up instead of them staying as Quicktime files?
    So here are my questions...
Tonight when i go home I want to be able to open up the FCP sequence on Final Cut Pro Studio 2 (fcp7)...will this be possible to open up an FCP 2 sequence that many versions later?
Also, please tell me why the quicktime clips did this? When i do File-->Get Info-->change open with Terminal to Quicktime they play but how will i get them to reconnect to FCP?? Do i need to go one by one and add .mov extension??
I'm very confused...i would rather not have to do the editing on the 2003 machine..i'd like to get it to work on my newest computer (27inch imac).
Can i attach a newer external that the clips are on to the old mac?
    Thank you,
    Jenna

..will this be possible to open up an FCP 2 sequence that many versions later?
    Yes.
Do i need to go one by one and add .mov extension??
Use my [Automator Action|https://files.me.com/nikholmes/0ge9cr] which will rename them for you -Just choose the correct folder in the "Start At" section. Link is a direct download from my iDisk.
Can i attach a newer external that the clips are on to the old mac?
    Of course.
