Opening DB after a crash on Windows hangs

If our application crashes on Windows sometimes on restart a DB open hangs. Here is the stack:
0b7efad0 6363cb5d KERNEL32!WaitForSingleObject+0xf
0b7efb18 636794d9 MDSConfig!__memp_fopen+0x37d
0b7efb84 636790e0 MDSConfig!__db_dbenv_mpool+0x1c9
0b7efba8 636489c3 MDSConfig!__db_dbenv_setup+0x90
0b7efbd8 6364521b MDSConfig!__db_open+0x1a3
0b7efc14 6361a1cd MDSConfig!__db_open_pp+0x1cb
Running in debugger shows it has stopped on this line:
check:     MUTEX_LOCK(dbenv, hp->mtx_hash);
We are using file based shared memory on version 4.5.20. Deleting the __db.001 file allows the DB to be opened.
Can anyone explain what is happenning? Is the mutex held in the __db.001 file and appears to be held because the crash has left the data inconsistent?
Thanks.

Firefox is designed to show a different screen if there are two consecutive crash resumptions, but perhaps there is just enough success that you aren't getting the other screen.
You might find it more convenient to always get the "choose windows and tabs" screen, so here is how you do that:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes''' preference and change the value from 1 to 0 and OK that.
''Note: Please don't modify other sessionstore preferences without researching them first.''

  • Can't open file after Keynote crashed

I was working on a large Keynote file (about 130 Mb), when Keynote (4.0.1) quite unexpectedly. It happened a few times before, and I thought it was because of the instability of the new Leopard system. This time, however, I could not open the file after the crash. An error message was displayed: "Can't open file" followed by the path and the file name.
Does this happen to anyone else? Can anyone help? I hate to lose the work and go back to an early version.

Keynote and Leopard, especially in their newest iterations, are remarkably stable. That said, no file, program, or OS is totally immune from corruption. Whenever a program, or worse, your Mac, even starts to behave strangely, your first step ought to be to attend to it with a good fixit utility. Repairing permissions is usually fruitless, since it's highly unlikely there's a permissions problem. You already own *Disk Utility*, so you should try to repair the disk with that. Unfortunately, DU's disk repair is pretty wimpy, often unable to repair a problem, or erroneously reporting no problem when one obviously exists.
So, if you own a Mac, you owe it to yourself to buy at least one (but better, two) industrial-strength utility. There are really only three to choose from:
    1. DiskWarrior is an absolute must. It's unbeatable in rebuilding the directory, and the directory is usually what's corrupted. It can now fix files, too, which is also helpful.
    2. *TechTool Pro* is an excellent suite of fixits - directory, files, defrag, and some hardware tests. It also has a wonder feature, the eDrive. This is a small (10GB) bootable partition on your boot drive which has, among other things, TTP on it. If your main boot partition has a problem, you can boot from here and usually fix things. AFAIC, it's an absolute must on a laptop which you take on trips, far from your collection of fixit disks. You can also put DW on this partition, so you have everything you need right at your fingertips.
    3. *Drive Genius* is a relative new-comer, also a good suite of fixits, and, I believe, does backups, too.
I have 1 and 2, and that has saved me from catastrophe more than once. 1 and 3 would probably be good, too. (You ought to have more than one of these serious apps because one can sometimes fix something another can't - different proprietary algorithms.)
One last thing: if you have anything on your computer it'd break your heart to lose (and who doesn't), remember +The First Rule of Computing+: There are two kinds of computer users: those who have already lost all their data at least once, and those who have not yet lost all their data at least once. So: *backup, backup, backup*. I vote for bootable clones, done often (at least daily if you work daily), TimeMachine is pretty good, and there are other options. Pick one, and do it religiously.

  • After Effects crashes on Windows 7

    Hello everybody,
I installed After Effects on Windows 7. I have an Asus NVidia GTS 250 512MB graphic card. When I initialized AFX for the first time all went well. I could work normaly, see all the panels and stuff. Then I closed the program and start it again. It crashes and show a first message: «After Effects error: cannot access font», second message, something like «..cannot access font, BBI error...».
I find it strange that I can enter the program on the first time after installation but on the second time it crashes.
I spend several hours last night searching the Internet about this and discover nothing.
I apreciate if anyone could give me some light on this issue. Thank you! (now imagine a voice of a desperate man)

Here's a list of the fonts installed with the Windows 7 Beta.
Alternatively, if you've knowingly added fonts after installing the OS, you may just want to remove the ones that you've knowingly added.
If you haven't added any fonts, you may want to try resetting the prefs by holding down ctrl+shift+alt while launching AE.

  • Opening foto stream folder crashes my windows 7 explorer.  how can I correct this?

I've just installed Icloud in my Win 7 PC to be used with my Iphone 5.  Icloud has been turned "on" on the phone.  When I open Windows
explorer and click on the Photo Strram System folder, the program crashes, I need to close it using the Windows task manager. I haven't been able to find out if the phone is actually streaming any pictures to the PC.  Any suggestions to solve this problem will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

    Hi there
No need to get testy. Lilybiri was being spot on with the comparison.
The only solution for you will be to uninstall the Flash player, then locate an older version of the Flash player and install it on the Windows XP you have. Captivate is now at version 8 and several years have passed since version 1.1. You will likely not make 1.1 work with Windows 7 or Windows 8. In fact, the only way I'm aware to remotely make it work on those operating systems is by first ensuring you have the Professional or Ultimate version, then installing the Windows XP mode Virtual Machine.
Here is a link for uninstalling the Flash Player
And here is a link for the older versions
Sorry, but you are on your own to sort exactly how far back you will need to go to find a version of Flash Player that works with this version of Captivate. And keep in mind, that even though you finally get a Flash Player version that allows it to run, you will only be able to run it on some form of Windows XP. It will not run on Windows 7 or 8 unless you install the VM. And when you do that, you will be stuck inside the VM and will not be able to record anything outside it in the 7 or 8 environment.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Firefox v 19.0 crash when opening facebook, no error/ crash report, Windows XP Pro

Just today Firefox has began crashes every time I log into facebook. Unlike other users, it is not creating or sending crash reports when it does this. I can access the main screen and log in but when the first logged in page tries to load it crashes. No other sites seem to be affected. I have tried clearing cookies, and nothing seems to have updated in the last 24 hours (other than maybe firefox as I can't find an update date for it).
    Thanks for any help!

Fixed! My Java and Flash were fine, it was actually the "Facebook Desktop" plug in which was messing it up. It was fully up to date and hadn't updated recently so I'm not sure why it randomly started causing an issue but disabling it seems to have fixed the problem without any negative side effects!
    Thanks for all the help!

  • Firefox 16.02 has a stored history from 1 month ago. After a crash, Firefoxit reloads this old history, not my recent history. Why? Using WinXP SP3.

Recent history is stored correctly. Yet, when I open Firefox after a crash, recent tabs are not shown, just the tab configuration I had open about one month ago. How do I reset this so Firefox knows my recent tabs?
Previously I used History/Restore Previous session. Now I just changed Firefox to show, my windows and tabs from last time when starting. I then killed my Firefox session and restarted - I still get the tabs from 1 month ago.

    Hi,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • After a crash, lots of audiobooks have somehow moved to Music folder, and links are broken - how can I fix this?

Wow, I'm surprised the forums accepted that long a title.
Anyway, the computer crashed. I started again, and when opening iTunes after the crash ... something happened. There was a prompt that I idiotically didn't write down (Moving Library? Updating Library?), that kept going for hours, and eventually I just gave up and shut it down. That was probably stupid. Also evidence of significant things happening: the next Time Machine backup was 60GB+, so something big had changed.
As best I can tell, lots of my Audiobooks (and I've got MANY) now have broken links - when I look in the "iTunes Media" folder, many of the files that were once in the "Audiobooks" folder are now in the "Music" folder instead. All are still in the same subfolder as before: so audiobook files that were in "Audiobooks / BBC Melvyn Bragg" are now in "Music / BBC Melvyn Bragg", for example. So far I've only found Audiobooks that have been messed up in this way. Music and iTunes U and Podcasts seem to be unchanged, but maybe I just haven't noticed those problems yet.
And obviously I want to fix this.
Note that my iTunes library is set to "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized". All of the organization is what iTunes has done.
Option 1: can I just restore from a Time Machine backup? If so, what should I restore? There have been a few changes in the metadata in the 3-4 days since the crash, but I'm not overly concerned with that.
Option 2: can I just use Finder and move the files back? This would seem the "easiest" option to me. Although lots (hundreds? thousands?) of audiobook files have been moved, they're within only a couple of dozen different folders. Dragging them back into the correct folder would be easy - but what kind of havoc would that wreak on the database system?
Option 3: go through each track and find the file. I can do this. It'll take hours and hours and hours. I don't want to do this.
Slightly different question: how can I make a smart playlist of all the files with broken links? (I'm still trying to get a handle on just how big this problem is.) I've found suggestions about (1) making a smart playlist of everything, (2) dragging all of those into a normal playlist, and (3) making a new smart playlist of whatever's in #1 but not in #2, but that doesn't seem to be working for this situation. Is that advice now outdated, or is there something unique to my situation?
    Thanks in advance!

Following up: I went with Option 2 above, and it seems to have worked quite well. I didn't even need to quit iTunes. After the files were moved, the exclamation marks remained at first, until I played the file, or restarted iTunes - now all seems well, until the next crash anyway.

  • How do I get past the Mozilla Crash Reporter window?

I cannot get Firefox to work. Every time I open it a Mozilla Crash Reporter window opens up with the options to Restart or Quit Firefox. Neither of these work.
I have the five most recent ID report numbers as suggested in previous posts. Please advise where to go from here.

  • How do I stop Firefox from opening old tabs/windows after a crash?

whenever it crashes and i try to reopen the program, it opens all my old tabs and windows. often these are videos which all start playing at once. or worse, it opens the page that made it crash in the first place and crashes again.
how do i stop this annoying feature?
if there's no way to stop it, can you recommend a simple browser that doesn't try to think for you?

hello, enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash'''. double-click it and change its value to '''false'''.

  • When restarting firefox after a crash, how do I stop it from re-opening all web pages that were open at the time of the crash?

When firefox crashes, or if it hangs and I have to kill it, then when I go to restart it, it tries to re-open all pages that were open at the time it crashed or was killed. This is incredibly annoying, especially if one of the visited pages caused the crash or hang. It is also really annoying if some of the web pages happened to require passwords to log in, from multiple sites. In my case this occurs as I am frequently logged into multiple online educational web sites like ucsc-extension.edu and berkleemusic.com. In the login case you get multiple login prompt pop-ups with no way to correlate which pop-up goes with which web page. If there are a lot of them then it's a hopeless mess. This behavior is something that I never ever want and it infuriates me that not only is it the default behavior, it is something that there seems to be no way to turn off, at least via the configuration menus. Am I wrong? Is there a way to turn this off? If not can somebody either make it configurable or get rid if this fantastically idiotic behavior?
I suspect there's a command line option for this but on my Mac (or most systems these days) it's sort of "unnatural" to be starting programs like browsers by means other than a provided program start-up icon, which gives you no choice about the command line options.
Besides, as a default behavior the current behavior is something I cannot conceive of ever wanting. I would rather have a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == firefox crashed

    You can try this.
In the address bar type about:config you will be warned that this is dangerous.
    Search for browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash
Double click on true to toggle it to false.
    Exit the page.
Firefox will now NOT try to reload websites after a crash.

  • After Effects crashed and wont open

Ok so a few days ago I was working on After Effects CS5 and it crashed while rendering. I've to open it many times but always gives me the same message. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it but the problem remains. And also downloading all adobe updates and it still doesn't work. If anyone could please help, if anyone actually knows the problem.
This is the window that keeps appearing. Stressing me out!

To clear all preferences, delete the entire 10.0 folder. After Effects will recreate a fresh copy when it starts.
    (Mac OS) <drive>/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/10.0
    (Windows) <drive>\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\10.0

When I try to open After Effects I get a window with this message
error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was <368> <GPU Manager> <2> Sniffer Result Code:1
And then After Effects crashes without opening. It did open once yesterday but today it won't.

What EXACT version number (down to the last decimal) of AE are you using? What OS are you using? What are your system specs?
Also, if you have an AMD card, did you install CUDA drivers? If so, that's the problem. Read this: Avoid installing NVIDIA CUDA drivers on computers with AMD GPUs

Every time i try to open my Firefox i get a window that pops up asking me which browser i want to use to open it. After choosing Firefox it asks to run a C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe. But my search bar says file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe. Never seen anything like this, half tempted to stop using Mozilla for this sole fact. PLEASE someone help me.

Same error message, I disabled tab mix and made sure I only have the newest version of Java, restarted firefox, now it seems to be fine no error yet on Pogo games or pictures upload to ebay which were the biggest problems besides hanging. I had also had disabled AVG secure search yesterday but that did not solve the issue. Now I will try to add back in AVG search...I have very few adds ons, also the note embedded about re- installing a toolbar went away, my old one did not work with FF4, so I installed Yahoo toolbar but the message still did not go away until I applied this fix. Hopes this helps someone..
