Opening PageMaker 7.0 docs in InDesign CS2

I want to open PageMaker 7.0 documents in InDesign CS2. InDesign gives an error message "The Pagemaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered" but the document open perfectly well in Pagemaker.
Any suggestions?

Try using the Save As command in PageMaker. It will rebuild the file, ideally eliminating potencial causes of conflicts that PM can handle but ID can't.
Another suggestion is to split the PM file in smaller ones. This not only will make the files more digestible for ID, but will also serve as a diagnostic procedure: the files that ID won't open are the ones that have whatever ID is complaining about. In this case, you can pinpoint where the problem lies (maybe embedded images or stray elements in PM) and try to correct it.

  • Can't open Pagemaker 6.5 files in ID CS2 - Vista

I was running ID CS2 on a Windows XP Pro system and had no problems opening Pagemaker 6.5 files. That system recently suffered a processor demise that affected the motherboard and forced me to start over with a new system that's now running Vista Home Premium. All of the programs I use loaded fine on Vista except Pagemaker 6.5. When I try to load it, I get a message saying it's not compatible. So I thought, OK, I'll simply open the Pagemaker files in In Design as I've done in the past and resave them. However, every file I've attempted to open gives me an error message saying the files are damaged and can't be opened. I know none of the files are damaged because I'd recently opened many of the same files in Pagemaker before the other system crashed. BTW, all of the Pagemaker files are on external drives so couldn't have been affected by the crash.
Any ideas how I can get around this?

Thanks, Bob. I have another issue that I can't find any specifics on in the forum.
Do you know why Arial Narrow fonts aren't available in the InDesign or Photoshop font list? I've always used these fonts with no problems in XP Pro, but since going to Vista, they don't show up. They're listed in the Windows font folder. The only one that shows up in InDesign and Photoshop is Arial regular. Arial Narrow shows up and is available in Word and other programs but not Adobe.

  • Opening and relink a doc in Indesign

I am trying to take an Indesign document, as well as all of the elements linked to it, and drop it into a folder.(This part is already done)
Once it is in this folder, I want to open the file and relink the elements via a script with no user interaction.
I need the links to point to just a folder (i.e. \elementname.jpg) instead of a full path (i.e. C:\Files\elementname.jpg).
I am using VB scripting and CS4.
Currently, the only VB scripting I have done is to create a blank document that fits the size of the file.
Can anyone help or let me know if this is possible?

    No can do...
ID will Place a pdf, not edit it.
There is a plug in, PDF2ID, might be cost justifiable if you are going to do this occasionally (Really bad idea, really bad)
There is a widely known program which will open the pdf, widely frowned upon, strongly discouraged by all who represent Adobe...it is one of their flagship programs.
Save the pdf as a Word file, Place the Word file, rebuild that file from scratch, tedious. ..

  • How to open Pagemaker 7.0 in Indesign CC.

I just got Indesign CC after talking to an Adobe rep for about 30 minutes via chat. I told her I had several Pagemaker files I needed to open. (New computer - which I now got Indesign CC on her recomendation) She said that was the only way I could open Pagemaker files was to have Indesign CC. When I tried to open it says it doesn't support opening Pagemaker files.
Does anyone know a way to open Pagemaker files in InDesign CC?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Import von PageMaker-Dateien in InDesign CS2

    Hallo, Experten,

    Viele Grüße aus Berlin.

  • Can't open PageMaker file

Using OSX 10.4.11 and ID CS2.
Shouldn't we be able to open a PageMaker 5.2 document? Indesign CS2 gives the message: "Cannot open the file . . . may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports that file format may be missing."
We do have "PMPack" in the Plug-ins folder, and "Configure Plug-ins" show all the plug-ins are enabled.
    Any Ideas? Thanks.
    Peter

File size is 2 Megs. I don't know how to email you; when I reply to your note, it goes to Adobe Forums which won't accept it. And I suspect that posting my address here would not be wise.

  • Can't open Pagemaker files in InDesign Cs2

In the past i could usually open any Pagemaker 6 or 6.5 file in InDesign CS2. However this doesn't work anymore. I get a message o the screen telling me the file is corrupt and can't be opened. ( i can't really post the original message i get as it is in german).
This happens for any Pagemaker 6 or 6.5 file i have in my repository (and there are still many left so i had tried several ones from different dates and PM Versions)
As a first aid I tried to reinstall InDesign CS2 from the original discs. I uninstalledit before and did a restart of the Machine before i reinstalled it.
I use a Windows XP baesed system.
Does anyone have any idea on what i could try to get that back to work?

  • Error Message Opening PageMaker file in InDesign CS2

I'm using Windows Vista with Adobe CS2, the educational version.
When I try to open any previous Pagemaker files 6.5 and earlier, I get an error message that says the Pagemaker file is seriously damaged and cannot be opened. It happens with all PageMaker files I try to open.
This is a new HP computer and I used to have PageMaker 6.5 and InDesign CS 1.5 working fine on the old computer. Do I have to have PageMaker installed on this computer? I've tried clicking on the file to open it and from Indesign with file open. Any ideas?!

Since installing XP SP3 in addition to being unable to open Pagemaker 7 files in Indesign CS I now find I cannot open Indesign again if I close it. I have to reboot XP for a fresh start.
Also Illustrator CS opens only to present a box "Could not complete operation" and then closes. There are no problems then in opening it a second time, except it takes the usual significant time to start.
Are these symptoms of the same problem with SP3 and the Adobe software. It is disappointing to see people say neither Adobe or Redmond are at all interested.

  • Just starting to use InDesign CS2 and can't pull up my previous Pagemaker files; what do I do?

Just starting to use InDesign CS2 and can't pull up my previous Pagemaker files; says "damaged and cannot be recovered"
    How can I retrieve those?

I have no idea what "diagnostic recompose" is...
Step 3 in this linked technote will show you how to do a diagnostic recompose - on a Mac. Instructions for doing it on Windows are out there somewhere, I'll try to find 'em if you can't. The technote tells you to remove graphics from master pages; I'd also unembed graphics (make sure all graphics are linked, not stored in the PageMaker doc) in order to try to get it to open up in ID.
I'm sure there are more things you can try, if that doesn't work, but my broken-PageMaker-doc skills are pretty rusty.
Also, you may want to edit your response on the forums webpage, and delete it from your future email-replies, so your email address and phone number aren't preserved for all to see on the forums, forever.
Edit: Step 3, not step 4

  • Converting PageMaker to InDesign CS2

I have several documents that exist in PageMaker but InDesign CS2 crashes when I try to use that to open and convert the file. Is there a plug in or upgrade I need? Thanks!

I keep two old computers around - an XP machine and a G4 running OS 9 - in order to clean up old PM docs before trying to convert to ID. In fact, I'm looking at a project where I'll have to convert about 3000 files from PM to ID, and there's no chance at all that none of those 3000 files will require pre-conversion cleanup in PM.
Are you sure that it's a PageMaker file?
Are you sure that it's a PM6.5 or PM7 file?
Do you still have PM installed? Do the files work in PM?
Do they have embedded images? (That's one of the many reasons why my 3000 files require extensive cleanup.)

  • InDesign crash when opening PageMaker file

InDesign CS3 on Windows XP or Windows Vista - two different computers, opening PageMaker 7 files.
I opened 5 files, converted them to .indd files without any problem. The 6th crashed the programme, and now I cannot open any files without Windows telling me there is a problem and closing InDesign. No problem description. XP says there was an 'unknown error' and Vista says Windows encountered a problem and looks for a solution but never finds one!
Any help would be very much appreciated!!

AFAIK, that was a CS2 issue only. I'm running CS3 on Vista Ultimate 64
and have no problem opening the few PM files I have on this machine.
I don't have CS2 installed on Vista to check but I remember this being
verified as an issue that wouldn't be fixed in CS2.

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
Just pondering the best way forward.
I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to open PageMaker files in CS2? or CS6?  How can I download it while keeping my CC2014?

Is it possible to open PageMaker files in CS2? or CS6?  How can I download it while keeping my CC2014?
Can someone give me step by step instructions?

Asking about InDesign? Up to CS6, I read somewhere. For instructions you might find it better to ask in the InDesign forum, rather waiting for someone to stumble into this forum - look there goes a tumbleweed!

  • CS2 Opening Pagemaker files

I'm a PageMaker hold out - been using it for years - have CS2 Premimum but have only dabbled with it prefering to stay with the more familiar PageMaker.  However, I realize I have to go to Indesign because of support, operating systems, etc.  I have a problem in that Indesign won't open any PageMaker files.  I was able to open them before but now am getting a message saying that the PageMaker file is corrupt and can't be opened.
This is occurring on all PM files - even test ones that I create and try to open.  The files are apparently not corupt because PM opens them all.
I'm using InDesign CS2, PM 7.01, trying to open the PM files direct from the hard drive that the file was created on, recently reinstalled Windows XP Media Center, and had to reinstall PM and ID.  Since then can not open a PM file in ID.
Can anyone put there shed some light on this.  I have years of PM files that need converted to ID if I am to move on to ID.  (Plan is to open them as I need them.)    I would appreciate any hin ts, solutions you might have.

Thanks Bob, Peter  . . . . . you guys have saved me a lot of heartache and time.  I'l l roll back to SP2 and go from there.
    I REALLY appreciate the help.

  • Problem opening PM7 in PC Based InDesign CS2

    Hello,
I am attempting to open MAC based Pagemaker 7 files in PC based InDesign CS2. I get the following error message: "Cannot open the file...Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug in that supports the file may be missing, or the file may be open in another application". It's not the latter as I can't open it in any other format. Interestingly a coworker working on Mac based InDesign CS2 is able to open the Pagemaker file within InDesign. But when I open that InDesign file on my PC and attempt to make a type change and save the file it crashes my InDesign and I get the following error message:  InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I am able to view and print this file but not make any changes. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

CS2 and earlier will not open PM files on any machine running XP SP3, Vista or Win 7.
If you recently added SP3 to your XP machine and you have to open PM files you'll either have to roll back to SP2 or upgrade to CS5.
Worth noting is the fact that CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing.
