Opening Programs

A few days ago I emailed myself an excel spreadsheet that I was not able to open on my macbook. I had to right click on the file and click open with and choose excel to open it.
Today I downloaded a file, that is not excel and automatically it is saved as if it is an excel file. The file extension is *.bin , so it's not even an excel extension but now the file will not open. How can I disable every file I download from opening up in excel?

To change a filetype's association with a program, control-click (right click) on the file and hit "Get Info" (or select it and hit cmd-i).
There should be a section in the info window entitled "Open With:" Select an application from the drop down (or select "Other" to browse for your app). If you then hit the "Change All" button below, all documents with that extension will now associate themselves with that application.
As far as *.bin files are concerned, it is a generic extension used for various things (firmware, cd images, etc). So I can't tell you what will open it without knowing exactly what the file was meant for.
And as far as getting your firmware updated, you're going to have the "flash" your router with the bin file. I'm surprised this isn't covered on D-Link's support site. You may want to check google (just make any instructions you get are for your specific router, and sound right. A botched firmware update can brick your router).

Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
Open System Preferences.
Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display

Open programs on Lion

On my Macbook Pro, I used to be able to do a 3-4 finger horizontal swipe on my touchpad and it would show all programs that were open and had not been shut down completely, the windows had just been closed. With Lion, the swipe I used with Snow Leopard just moves between Dashboard and the Desktop. Does anyone know how to find which programs are open without having to go to "Force Quit" to see what's open?

Before closing down the machine, how can I close all the open programs?

Now that the iMac automauically starts up with the programs in use when closing, I find that this is delaying my start.
There must be a shortcut to close all the open programs before closing the machine.

If by 'closing' the machine you mean shutting it down, there is a checkbox in the Shutdown confirmation window which is preset to re-start all apps at startup which were open when the machine was shut down. Uncheck that item in the Shutdown confirmation window.
Unfortunately you'll need to do that each time you shut the machine down.

Default Open Program

My Adobe Bridge CS6 default open program has changed into "Window Live Photo Gallery" after uninstalled previous version of Bridge CS5. I uninstalled with remove all prefrenses. How can I get My Bridge CS6 default open program back to Photoshop CS6 ? Can anyone help me please. Thank you !!!

You can set this in the Bridge preferences File Type Associations section. Look for the file type you want to open in PS (e.g. jpeg, psd, tiff, raw) and from the menu choose PS as your default application.

I don't use Automator, but the following Applescript will do it:

Actually the last three lines by themselves would probably do it. Of course if any of the applications have open unsaved documents then you will get the usual dialog about do you want to save them.

This just happened here twice to. Was working in Photoshop CC on my Cintiq HD24 Touch when the cursor turned into a static beach ball. First time i ended up rebooting (really annoiying). Second time i opened Chrome to google this bug. Somewhere in the process of searching information my cursor changed back to an arrow???
Using Mavericks on a rMBP mid 2012, Photoshop CC and a Wacom Cintiq HD24 Touch. Did not experience this before working on the Cintiq.

PSE 5 clicking icon does not open program

I had to reinstall PSE 5 on my computer [Dell Dimension E310 Windows XP]. Adobe gave me a url to download the program as my original CD did not work [nothing happened when I put the CD into my computer]I downloaded the program but when I double click the icon for PSE 5 I get what is in the program [such as images, popup, help etc.] The program itself does not open. Can you help?

PSE 5 Reinstallation
I had to reinstall PSE 5 on my computer. It is no longer supported by adobe. They gave me a file to download the program, however when I tried to open the program after the installation I got a dialog box which in the blue bar at the top which says Photoshopelements_5.0_en_us. Inside the box there is a big list of files with icons in front of them. For examle cc_01_popup or pse_get_gp etc.
If you went into "my computer" and opened program files and clicked on a program the dialog box that opened would have the same appearance.

When the browser is open the mouse does random things in all open programs, I can close FF and it works fine is there a mouse bug?

Since the last upgrade, when the browser is open the mouse randomly clicks on things changes windows by itself. In addition highlighting things to cut and past is almost impossible... this transfers over to all open programs word, movie maker, audacity, etc... and as soon as the browser is close the problems go away... I am having this on two computers the first is a 32 Bit Vista system with a corded mouse the second is a dual boot 64 bit Win 7 and Linux Mint laptop using a Logitech cordless mouse and built in mouse pad both mouse and pad does this... in both operating systems.
I thought it was a problem with the mice or interference with the wireless receiver or from an Xbox in the same room interfering with the systems, however updated drivers were downloaded and installed on both computers for all three operating systems.

HT5624 I just updated the software on my iPad and now can't get all the open files to close as I used to in older version. When I double-click the round button, the open programs show up, but I can't hold down to have the "x" appear to close them. Help.

I just downloaded the updated software and now can't shut down open programs like I used to by holding downthe round button, having them appear at the bottom of the screen, holding them down for the "x" to appear and then closing them by clicking "x". I can get the program icons to appear, but don't know how to shut them off now.

In order to open it up, you have to backsave it to 7.1. You would need to first save it to 8.0 and 8.0 can save it as a 7.1 file. Attach your VI and ask if someone can do it for you if you don't have the intermediate version.

It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
Press return
Now reboot.
The reverse would be "yes".

Opening PDF crashes any open programs

Whenever I try to open a PDF (in mail, safari, preview, or Adobe) all my open programs crash. I booted in safe mode and I had no problem opening a PDF.
So, I tried disabling all my login items; I deleted all the pref files, of the above listed programs, from the library; did the usual disk utility, mac janitor, multiple restarts: Nothing. Same problem.
I looked at the crash report and I notice this line:
"KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000"
The x00000 number changes everytime depending on which program I am looking up.
I recently updated Microsoft word and added Extensis Suitcase X1 and I am up to date on all my Tiger updates. Any thoughts? It looks like there is an extension conflict with adobe. If so, how can I access the extensions and figure out the conflict?

First thing to try is creating another admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, then the conflict is within the original user account—usually a corrupted preference file, checkable with Preferential Treatment. Why my LV 8.6 (Englsih version in WIN 7 English OS) can not open programs I developed under LV (Chinese version)

I just installed LV 8.6 (English version) in my new laptop (WIN 7 English OS). I found under LV 8.6 environment I can not open some programs I developed using LV 8.5 (Chinese version). These programs are saved in folders with Chinese names (subvis for some programs have Chinese names). If I take these programs on the desktop and chang the Chinese name into number or English name I can open them usingL LV 8.6. However, all Chinese words in opened programs can not be identified.
What should I do?

I was replying into a recent message thread where the user posted a VI that had some oriental characters in the VI name and I was not able to open it as a result until I saved the file and renamed it using normal alphabetical characters. It is not a problem with LabVIEW but with windows not knowing what to do with a strange character set.
The only solution I know is to go change your file and folder names so they don't use chinese characters. You could also try opening them on a chinese version of Windows. Maybe Microsoft has some download you can install that will allow english Windows to work in a chinese environment.
