NetApp OpenStack Involvement
NetApp has a longstanding history with the open source and OpenStack communities. We've been a contributing member and a summit sponsor in the OpenStack community since 2011. We've released significant amounts of code upstream to provide Cinder drivers and Manila (fileshare service) incubation. And, we're constantly introducing new features and value adds in our contributions to other OpenStack projects such as Manila.
You don't need to download the code from our site; just get it from whoever's providing your OpenStack distribution. Red Hat is but one example.
Because of our involvement in the community, we've been recognized in the OpenStack User Survey Insights, 2014  results as being the number-one enterprise-class storage system used in OpenStack environments. And, since 2014 we've experienced 1) a growth in NetApp deployments to OpenStack environments by more than four systems, and 2) an increase of more than 1.5 in unique customers.
We're also a customer and a consumer of OpenStack, deploying it internally for multiple environments—production, test-development, and engineering. So we're using OpenStack or involved in OpenStack in every layer and in every possibility. And, we've just announced fibre channel protocol support in our Cinder driver.

Think OpenStack deployment is difficult? A confusing, overwhelming mess? You're not alone. Common wisdom says OpenStack is too complicated with too many manual steps. Too many log files to go through to figure out what's broken. And, OpenStack is changing too fast to keep up with.
Thinking like this puts enterprises in analysis-paralysis mode—unable to decide whether to begin an OpenStack deployment, or not. The complexities of OpenStack breed more investigation than implementation. Companies spend more time second-guessing their OpenStack deployment than getting production workloads up and running.
We think there's a better way.
Easier OpenStack with FlexPod
The standardized, validated FlexPod® platform can help speed and smooth the kinks out of your OpenStack deployment.
A joint, collaborative technical engineering effort between NetApp and Cisco, FlexPod delivers proven technology with best-of-breed components to:
Reduce OpenStack risk and total cost of ownership (TCO)
Accelerate and streamline deployment
Make administration more efficient
The solution incorporates NetApp® FAS and/or E-Series storage, Cisco® UCS servers, and Cisco Nexus switches. Our co-engineering effort with Cisco over the past seven years has produced more than 70 published documents—Cisco Validated Designs or NetApp Verified Architectures.
Now FlexPod has expanded its extensive validated design portfolio to include an OpenStack solution. NetApp teamed up with Red Hat and Cisco to deliver cloud-ready, enterprise-grade converged infrastructure with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (RHEL-OSP)—smoothing the way to deploy an open Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) for your hybrid cloud environments.
Watch this video to see how easy it is to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6 (RHEL-OSP6) on FlexPod Datacenter infrastructure using the RHEL-OSP installer.
The Proof Is in the Pod
We took an existing FlexPod in our Deployment Lab—reasonably spec'ed hardware, not artificially designed infrastructure geared to inflate results for demonstration purposes—rolled it together in a rack, and deployed on it Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6, taking advantage of NetApp integrations and enhancements in OpenStack.
Then we scaled up the number of instances in this resulting OpenStack cloud. We started with eight nodes, four of them being computer hypervisor nodes. How far were we able to scale? 1,000 instances? 2,000? 5,000? More?

Figure 2 shows how RHEL-OSP on FlexPod  scales in comparison with a competitor's published numbers.
Figure 2) Spinning media provides the ability to clone and boot 1,000 persistent instances in 31 minutes—an 83% decrease over a competitor's published all-flash numbers.

But wait, there's more: OpenStack scaled to nearly 10,000 instances after adding an additional 12 compute nodes.

Integrations That Lead to Scale
Integration of the Glance image repository with NetApp clustered Data ONTAP® enables two important benefits:
First, copy offload eliminates the initial network copy from a Glance image repository to a Cinder (block storage) repository. So instead of copying through the network, we clone the first volume from within the storage system itself. It's near instantaneous, and it avoids that first copy through the network.
Second is space efficiency: Our deduplication technology enables common 4K blocks to coalesce into a single block, which translates to serious space savings on the underlying volume holding all of your images. Most of the images in that Glance data store are either renditions or variations of operating systems, so they can share some of the same blocks. Deduplication stores only the deltas between the images stored in the Glance image store.
With other hypervisor platforms—VMware, Hyper-V—we've seen almost 90% deduplication rates. And that's not just internally; that's out in the field.
Create a Storage Service Catalog
Map features of underlying NetApp storage let you create classes of service, via Cinder volume types, that are aligned to workloads.
When creating Cinder volumes, you can specify a volume type and give it any name you wish—for example, disaster_recovery, test_development, or transactional_db. The names are arbitrary.
In the case of a transactional database: Suppose you have a workload where the customer specifies that data to be backed by solid-state disks or flash disks in the NetApp storage device. Through the extra-specs functionality in OpenStack, we can create these volume types and associate those extra specs with that volume type.
Whenever a customer uses Cinder and specify a volume type, either through the command line or through the Horizon dashboard, he or she can get Cinder volumes that are created on those back-end NetApp FlexVols. So if you have three different FlexVols with different associated features (for example,, one with deduplication, one with mirroring, one with a NetApp SnapMirror® relationship), whenever the user makes a request for a new Cinder volume, the resulting Cinder volumes will be stored on NetApp FAS FlexVols that meet the defined characteristics of the Storage Service Catalog.
Watch Integrating NetApp Technology with OpenStack Block Storage Cinder to learn how to utilize the OpenStack Cinder volume-type functionality to leverage NetApp technology (deduplication, compression, thick provisioning, and mirroring) for OpenStack deployments.
Robust, Scalable Instance Caching
Once a Cinder volume is created from a Glance image, it's automatically cached in the network file system (NFS) image cache locally on the NetApp FlexVol. Future volumes are then cloned—not copied—from this NFS image cache for instant replication without additional storage space. The new volumes share the same blocks as the cached image, and only deltas take up new blocks on the disk.
When you're using NetApp storage for Glance data, rapid instance cloning via NetApp FlexClone® becomes possible—dramatically reducing the creation time for Cinder volumes that are used for persistent images.
Reduce Disk Rebuild Time by 90%
Swift object storage takes advantage of the NetApp E-Series storage systems to deliver resiliency and scalability. With E-Series Dynamic Disk Pools, each volume's data, parity information, and spare capacity are distributed across all drives in the disk pool. The intelligent algorithm defines which drives are used for segment placement, ensuring full data protection. All drives are active within the storage system; none are idle, meaning you have no hot spares just sitting there.
This integration delivers major advantages, including:
Data is reconstructed throughout the disk pool
All drives share responsibility for writes
Dynamic rebuild operations run in parallel
You experience up to eight times faster return to optimal condition
By default, Swift replicates data three times across the cluster, and the weight of replication traffic can become a limitation to scale; as Swift scales, hardware requirements increase linearly. With E-Series, internal drive requirements for storage nodes are reduced, and only operating system storage is required. The E-Series storage array supplies disk space for Swift account, container, and object data.
Since a single storage subsystem provides storage space for multiple Swift nodes, smaller and possibly lower power IU nodes can be used in the cluster—resulting in reduced rack space, power, cooling, and footprint requirements.
Figure 4) NetApp E-Series Swift delivers major advantages over Direct Attached Storage (DAS) Swift.

No, music does not have to be in the iTunes Music folder or necessarily in any other particular folder. You can have the track files located anywhere on the system you wish. iTunes will by default copy tracks you import or rip from CDs wherever the location is set in the Advanced preference. Perhaps the option is set to the root of the iTunes folder in your case. And if you turn off the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in the the iTunes -> Advanced preferences, you can have your tracks anywhere on the system in whatever organization you like; iTunes will leave them where they are and quite happily link to them.
Regards.

    Hi america village,
First, you'll want to make sure that you're in Acrobat, not Adobe Reader, so look at the top of application window to make sure that you see "Acrobat" in the upper-left corner. If you do have Reader open instead of Acrobat, and try to convert a file, you'll be accessing (or attempting to access) the ExportPDF online service.
In Acrobat, you choose File > Save as Other > Microsoft Word > Word Document to convert a PDF file to Word format.
Please let us know how it goes!

  • Does my OfficeJet 8500 have an internal hard drive?

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 All-In-One (FAX/Scan/Print/Photo) printer that doesn't work and I'd like to get rid of it.  Before I dispose of it, I'd like to know if there's an internal hard drive that could potentially be storing anything I may have copied, scanned or faxed.  If it does have an internal hard drive which is holding this information, (1)  How do I erase/delete it? and (2)  Where can I dispose of the printer once the "memory" is removed/deleted/erased?

    Hi ProudNavyMom,
I see that you want to dispose of your printer.
The printer doesn't have an internal hard drive.
For disposing of the product take a look at this link.

  • Is iCloud as good to back up files when an iMac 2007 model does not have an external hard drive is this enough to find files and apps at another time

I have given my iMac 2007 model running mountain lion OSX 10.8.3 to a friend and she doesn't have an external hard drive to back up would using iCloud be as good to back up files pictures etc and can I find them again if lost please.

These are the iCloud storage options: http://www.apple.com/icloud/includes/lightbox-storage.html
    Also bear in mind that:
    1. restoring data over icloud takes time
    2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine.

I downloaded Yosemite OS X and when I try to select my HD (the disk) where I want to install it, the hard drive doesn't have enough space. I have a MacBook Pro bought in 2008. What can I do and still have all my files? I haven't backed up...

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
I recommend that you also make a backup before proceeding. Just quit the installer.

  • Connectiong an external thunderbolt hard drive to an older iMac via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt entry?

Is there a possibility to connect an external thunderbolt hard drive to my iMac (originally Leopard 10.5.8. upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3) via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt, but has two firewire entries?
Would like to use the hard drive's big data stocking capacity of 8TB, but actual WD-HDDs of such a capacity have no more other entries than thunderbolt.

Basically, no.  The Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter does not work "in reverse,"  meaning, you have to have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to use it.
Most Thunderbolt drives that I have seen also have a USB 3 port.  You could use that, but on on an older Mac that does not have a USB 3 port you will be limited to USB 2 speeds.

  • Why do I have such a hard time when I connect to facebook games it doesn't want to start the game it sending me a message about apps...what does that mean?

why do I have such a hard time when I connect to facebook games... firefox doesn't want to open the game the message is sending that their something with the apps..what does that mean?....what is plugin...what do I do for that?

The usual explanation is that it is a licensing issue. It's not Apple refusing to support an MS product (they support loads of others, like QuickLook for Office docs). MS won't let Apple have it. (The Linux-based solutions are third-party reverse engineered.)
That having been said, I've never had a problem plugging an NTFS drive and reading files from it. Why does it take you an hour?
I've never had a problem with a Mac-formatted USB thumb drive not writing either. It's possible that the hardware/software that Apple uses is more sensitive to cheaper thumb drives, but I'm guessing here.

  • Need to move my applications to new OS and Hard Drive, but Tiger doesn't have Time Machine, right?

I updated my RAM, put in a new hard drive, and updated my OS from tiger to snow leopard (no I'm NOT ready for lion) all at the same time on my 2007 MacBook. Though I backed up general files on my hard drive, I didn't do a full system backup, and now all of my beautiful applications (i.e. Office, Photoshop, etc.) no longer exist. Can I get these back if I put in my old drive and back it up somehow? Or is it all gone now that I'm on a new OS on a new hard drive? Trying to figure out how to properly back up applications and info from Tiger on my original HD and get it all onto my new HD which is functioning with Snow Leopard. I don't think Time Machine works on Tiger so I'm confused. I have an external hard drive I can use as well.

Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-5-SATA-HDD-HARD-DRIVE-EXTERNAL-ENCLOSURE-CASE-BOX-/120 636286623?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item1c167ba69f
Just put your old drive in the case and plug it into one of your USB ports. For MicroSoft Office you can just move the folder from the old drive's Application Folder to the new drive's Application Folder. PhotoShop might not work as well. Office has everything it needs in it's folder while PhotoShop seems to need something else.

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job).  What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program
    http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/faq.html
Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software.  (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.)  The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance.  I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers.  When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install.  We did!  But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

  • Why this new version of iTunes doesn't have Album Art or It didn't show up?

Why this new version of iTunes doesn't have Album Art or It didn't show up?
Also, in my iPod Touch 4th, it erase all album art from my iPod, then i tried to put again a new Album Art, ...download again from the image sites and still ...it didn't show up.? What a waste!
I waste all my time to set all album art on my iPod, then it just gone. kindly pls fix this issue. hate this new version of iTunes, so complicated.
The first thing i saw after i install new version of iTunes, it showed only music files. I don't know where to look for the old version of Sidebar. I keep on trying to look for it where I can see or any sign off button just to show up this stupid SideBar. Also, why i couldn't find? The "Menu Bar" is also hide!
Until i found out in "View" tab. Then i saw the Show Sidebar. Question? why do you need to hide that Side Bar? For what?. it is so so so complicated specially to those people who can't relate for this. (Also the button (from previous iTunes) to show the Album Art, now it's gone. I check every Tab, but there's no way to see the Album Art.)
Another comment. I download also some of my songs to my iPod, I wasted my time to collect all of my favorite music files. Also some are came from CD's and friends. I had all that favorite music in my iPod. Then the version iOS 5.+ came then I updated my iPod, another options to save files (iCloud) but I think there are something that I MISS about updating my iPod. Then suddenly I checked my iPod... all music (with Album Arts) are gone. All Apps are Gone. Videos as well.
If you don't know how to use that iCloud (with only 5GB storage), you'll gonna miss/lost everything.
Then I start all over again, i still have my BACK UP, good to have that. Now it's all set until I update the latest iOS 6. And another version of iTunes.
Then I realized my computer getting slow. I uninstalled it. My laptop started to work fast again. Then I download again the iTunes. So now I know, it has the ability to slow my computer. Everytime I turn on my iTunes, it hang. (Not Responding). Solution... CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Then every second time to open the iTunes, and it works. (it means, to open iTunes, need twice)
Then suddenly my laptop is not working. All my files has been corrupted. My Hard drive doesn't work properly. Now I don't have any stupid BACK UPs. My music files usage is 18 GB, only contacts, documents, notes, or some other files that can only fit to your "iCloud" not my 18GB music files and other photos. Your solution is to BUY more storage. Another COST! Another wasting time to set everything then need to pay more?
If you let your unit (iPod,iPhone,iPad) to export music to PC, or any mini SDcard to use as storage, it won't happen.
    There is another....
    It has Bluetooth, right?
Use less! Doesn't work. There's no way to use it.
All I need is to install an application to use your bluetooth. (for same unit or Apple unit only). And pictures only can send via Bluetooth if you an application.
Even if you go to "Photos" check if there's a way to send pictures? there is no way to send via Bluetooth, even Photos, Songs.etc. It can't even share some other friends (even they have own iPad, iPod, iPhone or same products) who has a unit with Bluetooth.
And the last.. only one port. there's no way to watch videos through HDMI. No HDMI port, no SD or any card slot. Must to buy their products.
    Very costly!
I know (like iPod) it's very friendly to use it, but you  must spend more money first before it can use.

Yes, the old album art view is gone, bu you can see the album art for a song that's playing by clicking on the art image and it will open a bigger view.
Everything else in your post is a waste. I'm not going to spend time reading it. If - and I repeat if, you have a question on how to get the best out of the new look iTunes, post it. But don't spend your time in long rambling negative rants.

  • Can I force my computer to ignore the fact that it doesn't have 'permission' to change certain files and compress them anyway?

I'm trying to compress everything on my external USB hard disk using the File> Compress Items option in the Finder. However, every time I try this, it thinks for a little while and then tells me it can't do it because it doesn't have 'permission' to edit such-and-such a file. I have gone into the 'Get Info' panel for the hard disk and tried changing the permissions to read & write for my own account, 'staff', and 'everyone', checked the checkbox for 'Ignore ownership on this volume', and chosen 'Apply to enclosed items...' from the little gear/cog menu under 'Sharing & Permissions' section of the 'Get Info' panel. I have also tried sending the problematic files to the trash, but every time I do so, when I select 'Compress items' again, it just finds more files that it doesn't have 'permission' to edit. I cannot 'repair disk permissions' from disk utility, and when I select 'repair disk', it says that there is nothing wrong.
There is no reason that I shouldn't have 'permission' to edit these files. They are all my own documents and photos etc, or ones that have been downloaded from the internet. The computer is not connected to any kind of network, and there is only one user account on the computer, which is an 'administrator' type account.
My question is -- how do I bypass this 'permissions' problem? Is there a way to 'force' compress, like when there is a problem emptying the trash and you can choose to 'Force Empty Trash'?
Thanks in advance for any aid or advice,
    lsrw.

You caant get the'a from he'a.
You could have it wake at 2:55 and then shutdown at 3:00 but then it won't wake in the morning.
Not shure why you want to shut down instead of sleep.  It uses only a small amount energy sleeping with the display off.  It would probably use more energy to have it wake up in the morning before you get there than to have it sleep all night.
If you are having battery issues you should replace the battery.  I have seen it stated elsewhere in this community as batteries go bad they can damage the system.  Your's might not be near that state but you should consider replacing it.
With it plugged in there should be no difference in the charge on the battery whether it is sleeping or shutdown.  It charges in both states and maintains a full charge while plugged in.

  • Hi there! yesterday I installed Mavericks on my Macbook. Since then, it doesn't mount my external hard disk drive anymore, which he did a week ago (without the update). Is there anyone out there who knows a solution?

Hi there! Yesterday, I installed Mavericks on my Macbook. Since then, it doesn't recognize my external hard disk drive anymore (at least not on the desktop. In Germany they call it "it doens't mount it". I don't know if it's the same expression in english?)
I just used it a week ago, before I did the update and it worked perfectly fine.
Is there anyone out there who knows a solution for this problem? I've been googleing for hours now and can't find any answer.
    Thank you!!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
