PDF Preview: OpenStack Deployment Doesn't Have to Be Hard
Discover how RHEL-OSP makes it easy to deploy an open Infrastructure-as-a-Service for your hybrid cloud environments.
Hi america village,
First, you'll want to make sure that you're in Acrobat, not Adobe Reader, so look at the top of application window to make sure that you see "Acrobat" in the upper-left corner. If you do have Reader open instead of Acrobat, and try to convert a file, you'll be accessing (or attempting to access) the ExportPDF online service.
In Acrobat, you choose File > Save as Other > Microsoft Word > Word Document to convert a PDF file to Word format.
Please let us know how it goes!
Best,
Sara

NetApp OpenStack Involvement
NetApp has a longstanding history with the open source and OpenStack communities. We've been a contributing member and a summit sponsor in the OpenStack community since 2011. We've released significant amounts of code upstream to provide Cinder drivers and Manila (fileshare service) incubation. And, we're constantly introducing new features and value adds in our contributions to other OpenStack projects such as Manila.
You don't need to download the code from our site; just get it from whoever's providing your OpenStack distribution. Red Hat is but one example.
Because of our involvement in the community, we've been recognized in the OpenStack User Survey Insights, 2014 results as being the number-one enterprise-class storage system used in OpenStack environments. And, since 2014 we've experienced 1) a growth in NetApp deployments to OpenStack environments by more than four systems, and 2) an increase of more than 1.5 in unique customers.
We're also a customer and a consumer of OpenStack, deploying it internally for multiple environments—production, test-development, and engineering. So we're using OpenStack or involved in OpenStack in every layer and in every possibility. And, we've just announced fibre channel protocol support in our Cinder driver.

Think OpenStack deployment is difficult? A confusing, overwhelming mess? You're not alone. Common wisdom says OpenStack is too complicated with too many manual steps. Too many log files to go through to figure out what's broken. And, OpenStack is changing too fast to keep up with.
Thinking like this puts enterprises in analysis-paralysis mode—unable to decide whether to begin an OpenStack deployment, or not. The complexities of OpenStack breed more investigation than implementation. Companies spend more time second-guessing their OpenStack deployment than getting production workloads up and running.
We think there's a better way.
Easier OpenStack with FlexPod
The standardized, validated FlexPod® platform can help speed and smooth the kinks out of your OpenStack deployment.
A joint, collaborative technical engineering effort between NetApp and Cisco, FlexPod delivers proven technology with best-of-breed components to:
Reduce OpenStack risk and total cost of ownership (TCO)
Accelerate and streamline deployment
Make administration more efficient
The solution incorporates NetApp® FAS and/or E-Series storage, Cisco® UCS servers, and Cisco Nexus switches. Our co-engineering effort with Cisco over the past seven years has produced more than 70 published documents—Cisco Validated Designs or NetApp Verified Architectures.
Now FlexPod has expanded its extensive validated design portfolio to include an OpenStack solution. NetApp teamed up with Red Hat and Cisco to deliver cloud-ready, enterprise-grade converged infrastructure with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (RHEL-OSP)—smoothing the way to deploy an open Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) for your hybrid cloud environments.
Watch this video to see how easy it is to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6 (RHEL-OSP6) on FlexPod Datacenter infrastructure using the RHEL-OSP installer.
The Proof Is in the Pod
We took an existing FlexPod in our Deployment Lab—reasonably spec'ed hardware, not artificially designed infrastructure geared to inflate results for demonstration purposes—rolled it together in a rack, and deployed on it Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6, taking advantage of NetApp integrations and enhancements in OpenStack.
Then we scaled up the number of instances in this resulting OpenStack cloud. We started with eight nodes, four of them being computer hypervisor nodes. How far were we able to scale? 1,000 instances? 2,000? 5,000? More?
Figure 1) Physical storage, networking, and compute components of the FlexPod Deployment Lab.

Figure 2 shows how RHEL-OSP on FlexPod scales in comparison with a competitor's published numbers.
Figure 2) Spinning media provides the ability to clone and boot 1,000 persistent instances in 31 minutes—an 83% decrease over a competitor's published all-flash numbers.

But wait, there's more: OpenStack scaled to nearly 10,000 instances after adding an additional 12 compute nodes.

Integrations That Lead to Scale
Integration of the Glance image repository with NetApp clustered Data ONTAP® enables two important benefits:
First, copy offload eliminates the initial network copy from a Glance image repository to a Cinder (block storage) repository. So instead of copying through the network, we clone the first volume from within the storage system itself. It's near instantaneous, and it avoids that first copy through the network.
Second is space efficiency: Our deduplication technology enables common 4K blocks to coalesce into a single block, which translates to serious space savings on the underlying volume holding all of your images. Most of the images in that Glance data store are either renditions or variations of operating systems, so they can share some of the same blocks. Deduplication stores only the deltas between the images stored in the Glance image store.
With other hypervisor platforms—VMware, Hyper-V—we've seen almost 90% deduplication rates. And that's not just internally; that's out in the field.
Create a Storage Service Catalog
Map features of underlying NetApp storage let you create classes of service, via Cinder volume types, that are aligned to workloads.
When creating Cinder volumes, you can specify a volume type and give it any name you wish—for example, disaster_recovery, test_development, or transactional_db. The names are arbitrary.
In the case of a transactional database: Suppose you have a workload where the customer specifies that data to be backed by solid-state disks or flash disks in the NetApp storage device. Through the extra-specs functionality in OpenStack, we can create these volume types and associate those extra specs with that volume type.
Whenever a customer uses Cinder and specify a volume type, either through the command line or through the Horizon dashboard, he or she can get Cinder volumes that are created on those back-end NetApp FlexVols. So if you have three different FlexVols with different associated features (for example,, one with deduplication, one with mirroring, one with a NetApp SnapMirror® relationship), whenever the user makes a request for a new Cinder volume, the resulting Cinder volumes will be stored on NetApp FAS FlexVols that meet the defined characteristics of the Storage Service Catalog.
Watch Integrating NetApp Technology with OpenStack Block Storage Cinder to learn how to utilize the OpenStack Cinder volume-type functionality to leverage NetApp technology (deduplication, compression, thick provisioning, and mirroring) for OpenStack deployments.
Robust, Scalable Instance Caching
Once a Cinder volume is created from a Glance image, it's automatically cached in the network file system (NFS) image cache locally on the NetApp FlexVol. Future volumes are then cloned—not copied—from this NFS image cache for instant replication without additional storage space. The new volumes share the same blocks as the cached image, and only deltas take up new blocks on the disk.
When you're using NetApp storage for Glance data, rapid instance cloning via NetApp FlexClone® becomes possible—dramatically reducing the creation time for Cinder volumes that are used for persistent images.
Reduce Disk Rebuild Time by 90%
Swift object storage takes advantage of the NetApp E-Series storage systems to deliver resiliency and scalability. With E-Series Dynamic Disk Pools, each volume's data, parity information, and spare capacity are distributed across all drives in the disk pool. The intelligent algorithm defines which drives are used for segment placement, ensuring full data protection. All drives are active within the storage system; none are idle, meaning you have no hot spares just sitting there.
This integration delivers major advantages, including:
Data is reconstructed throughout the disk pool
All drives share responsibility for writes
Dynamic rebuild operations run in parallel
You experience up to eight times faster return to optimal condition
By default, Swift replicates data three times across the cluster, and the weight of replication traffic can become a limitation to scale; as Swift scales, hardware requirements increase linearly. With E-Series, internal drive requirements for storage nodes are reduced, and only operating system storage is required. The E-Series storage array supplies disk space for Swift account, container, and object data.
Since a single storage subsystem provides storage space for multiple Swift nodes, smaller and possibly lower power IU nodes can be used in the cluster—resulting in reduced rack space, power, cooling, and footprint requirements.
Figure 4) NetApp E-Series Swift delivers major advantages over Direct Attached Storage (DAS) Swift.

PDFNo, music does not have to be in the iTunes Music folder or necessarily in any other particular folder. You can have the track files located anywhere on the system you wish. iTunes will by default copy tracks you import or rip from CDs wherever the location is set in the Advanced preference. Perhaps the option is set to the root of the iTunes folder in your case. And if you turn off the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in the the iTunes -> Advanced preferences, you can have your tracks anywhere on the system in whatever organization you like; iTunes will leave them where they are and quite happily link to them.

Dear Friends,
I am using SSFCOMP_PDF_PREVIEW Function Module to display a PDF preview.
For this i have designed a Smartform and capturing the JOB_OUTPUT_INFO from FM that i get dynamically and using that as export parameter for SSFCOMP_PDF_PREVIEW.
I am able to see the PDF preview, but it is coming as a pop up in a predefined size. Can i change the size in which it is displayed?
Pls let me know.
Thanks,
SimhaHi,
Thanks for the update.
Which window resize you meant?

Does my OfficeJet 8500 have an internal hard drive?
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 All-In-One (FAX/Scan/Print/Photo) printer that doesn't work and I'd like to get rid of it. Before I dispose of it, I'd like to know if there's an internal hard drive that could potentially be storing anything I may have copied, scanned or faxed. If it does have an internal hard drive which is holding this information, (1) How do I erase/delete it? and (2) Where can I dispose of the printer once the "memory" is removed/deleted/erased?
Hi ProudNavyMom,
I see that you want to dispose of your printer.
The printer doesn't have an internal hard drive.
For disposing of the product take a look at this link. -
I have given my iMac 2007 model running mountain lion OSX 10.8.3 to a friend and she doesn't have an external hard drive to back up would using iCloud be as good to back up files pictures etc and can I find them again if lost please.
These are the iCloud storage options: http://www.apple.com/icloud/includes/lightbox-storage.html
Also bear in mind that:
1. restoring data over icloud takes time
2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine. -
Geany Latex plug-in PDF preview doesn't work [NEVER MIND]
See the end of this post
Does anyone know how to get the Geany Latex plug-in PDF preview to work? For a while it was creating a shell script in the current directory that didn't have execute permissions for the user, now I can't tell if it's even doing that (the script was designed to erase itself). I tried with both sakura and xterm as the terminal, as well as I tried with evince (my preferred viewer) and xpdfview. Also, the DVI preview doesn't work.
--EDIT--
Wait! The script magically returned. It's called geany_run_script.sh and it looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
evince "/home/skottish/latex/1/John.pdf"
echo "
(program exited with code: $?)"
rm $0
It works if it's chmoded then executed, but that's totally pointless for the user to do.
--FINAL EDIT--
I've spent far too much time on text editors. The reality is that Scite is a perfect fit for me. It's fast as hell, supports every language I want, it's fully scriptable, has auto completion... it does everything I need it to do and far more. I'm sure a very simply Lau script will implement this and anything else that I need.
--FINAL EDIT, THE NEXT GENERATION--
In Scite, you just need to put something like this in one of the options files. This works for Evince. The menu item 'pdfPreview' will be in the 'Tools' menu for .tex files:
# PDF preview through Evince
command.name.1.$(file.patterns.tex)=pdfPreview
command.1.$(file.patterns.tex)=pdflatex $(FileName) && evince $(FileName).pdf
command.subsystem.1.$(file.patterns.tex)=0
Making the second command line into this will clear up the .aux, .log. and .pdf files also:
command.1.$(file.patterns.tex)=pdflatex $(FileName) && evince $(FileName).pdf && rm $(FileName).aux $(FileName).log $(FileName).pdf
Now onto spell check...............................
--FINAL EDIT, BACK TO THE BEGINNING AGAIN--
It turns out with Geany all that needs to be done is to add this to Build-->Set Arguments-->PDF creation. Then when you go Build--> Latex -> PDF, it would launch evince:
pdflatex --file-line-error-style "%f" && evince "%e".pdf
Of course adding this to the end would clean up the build files also:
&& rm "%e".pdf "%e".log "%e".aux

Since the recent upgrade from Adobe pdf plug-inn Firefox often won't open pdf-files. Uninstalling doesn't help. I don't have this problem with Internet Explorer.
Hi efacg,
Most printing issues are solved by resetting the Printing preferences. When you print from Firefox and you click on the down arrow, do you see Defualt and Firefox? Please make changes to the preferences here and preview the document.
If this continues to be an issue please also see [[Fix printing problems in Firefox]]

Trying to drag pdf files i have and combine them into one pdf file in the account i just purchased with Adobe. when i drag a pdf file over Adobe doesn't accept it. says it can not convert this type of file. but it is an Adobe file. Do I need to change it in some other form befor dragging it?
Hello djensen1x,
Could you please let me know what version of Acrobat are you using.
Also, tell me your workflow of combining those PDF files?
Please share the screenshot of the error message that you get.
Hope to get your response.

I have created a pdf and then want to send it to my boss. When he recieves it it is saved in the 14 X 8.5 inches version. How can I saved it on my end as a 11 x 8.5 inch so he doesn't have to uncheck "Choose paper source by PDF page size"?
Hi heathers,
You would need to print the file to a new PDF with the appropriate page size.
Best,
Sara -
How can I send scanned files, which are documents changed from doc to PDF, as documents that can be edited if the recipient doesn't have Adobe capabilities?
Hi flaviusjack,
If you still have the .doc files, it might be best to send those to your recipients so they can be edited. Otherwise, you can use ExportPDF to convert the PDF files back to .doc format. But, again, that step would be unnecessary if you have the .doc files.
Best,

Again after last patch: Windows 64 - PDF preview handler not working
Adobe's PDF preview handler doesn't work unter Windows XP/Vista/7 64 bit. Because of that PDF preview e.g. in Windows explorer or MS Outlook isn't displaying PDF preview.
This issue has been discussed in this forum some months ago, and this page gives a solution that has helped:
http://www.pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/index.html#fixer
Instead of fixing this well-known issue with the last patch Adobe decided again not to fix. And after installing the patch you have to repair PDF preview handler again...

Lenovo W500, 2,8 Ghz T9600, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit, Acrobat 9Hi Sree,
According to your description, your case related to Adobe PDF Preview Handler. This is third-party product. I am afraid this is out of our support. Please ask in their special forum
https://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_reader_forums
By the way, after do some search, it seems not working for 64bit machine,
>> It is working fine in Windows 7 and Vista
Also work fine in win7/vista 64bit????
If your scenario is not working in 64bit machine, try to put "adobe pdf preview handler 64-bit fix" in search engine. Good luck.
Have a nice day!

Hi All
I am creating a webdynpro java application in NWDS 7.1 SP 05. This application has an interactive form ui element. The livecycle designer version is 7.1 and reader versions tried are 8 and 9.
The issue is that the pdf preview in NWDS is blank and also I am getting blank white space instead of the form when i deploy the application on a browser.
I have used NWDS 7.1, SP05 + ALD 7.1 combination on another system and there i can see the form in NWDS pdf preview.
I am completely stuck, please let me know of any way out.
Thanks
LishaHi,
Try to uninstall adobe life cycle designer and install it onceagain..
Even we faced some times this problem, but better to use higher version of adobe life cycle designer like 8.0 whiuch will be compatible to your NWDS version...
Hope this helps you in resolving the problem...

LishaI can't give a specific response, but if possible, upgrade to LCD 8.0 - it is much smoother to use than 7.1.
I almost pulled out all my hair working with 7.1 -

I have an issue in workspace with doinga PDF preview on a Financial Reporting report. PDF preview works fine via workspace but only FR has the problem, here is the error that is displayed. I am running FR server on AIX and the print servers are on windows platform. We have two installations pointing to same windows box for print server. The 1st if FR for HFM running all on windows, the 2nd is FR on AIX for an Essbase installation. The HFM FR install works great via workspace but the the 2nd produces the following error:
Error 500--Internal Server Error
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
10.5.1 500 Internal Server Error
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
We made the port for the print server static(it is normally dynamic) so we could open the firewall port to the print server and have verifed it is open.
Does anyone have a suggestion of what could be producing the Internal Server Error. I should mention that we use Weblogic for the web deployment of workspace if that should have any bearing on the issue.Firewall issues were preventing this problem.
