Operating system install and restore, sort of

My Superdrive extension became corrupted and it wouldn't read any DVD's. Long story short, the answer was to erase and re-install Snow Leopard, then bring back my settings/software without bringing back System or Library folders. My SuperDrive now works and I've brought back a lot of my stuff, but I'm looking to bring back some more detailed info, such as widgets, old calendars etc. I couldn't use the "Restore from TimeMachine" option, because it would bring back the bad extension. So is there anyone out there who could describe a way of bringing back such info, without having to select each individual program and restore it, without bringing back the elusive bad extension? Thanks

Use the TM application to restore individual files. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." There is an article on how to restore files and folders.
See, also, User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

Trying to determine and locate the proper operating system and restore disks for an ibook G3 800mhz 12" Don't want to waste money on the wrong disks. Can any one identify the part number on the original os disks and the restore Cd's?
Thanks in advance for the replies. This forum has helped alot if the short time I have been a Mac user. I wish I jumped sooner. Two Macs at home now and counting. This laptop is so good I cannot wait to upgrade to something even newer!

If you try to obtain them anywhere except from Apple (the best option, probably), keep in mind that there were two different versions of the 800 MHz G3 iBook. The first version has a Combo drive (reads DVD's; reads and writes CD's). The second has a CD-ROM drive (reads CD's only). The second version will not be able to use the system discs for the first.
In order to avoid this confusion, contacting Apple to see if you can get the discs directly from them is likely the best option.
    Good luck.

  • No operating system installed or corrupted partition

I have a MacBook Pro and wanted to setup Boot Camp 2.0 so that I could run windows in order to install programs neccessary to manage my Blackberry.
I partitioned the XP as 10Gb and formatted FAT 32. The XP Home CD I used was one originally for my Gateway laptop. Had to back up everything on an external HD and install Mac OS x 10.5.1 (erase and install) since files could not be moved if I had all my info on the computer. Everything went well off the clean install until I had to install boot camp drivers for windows. I could not install updated features because it was SP1.
So I found another Gateway XP Home CD this time it was SP2 (used for my mom's desktop). First, deleted the windows partition by using boot camp assistant. And tried the process over again, this time with the SP2 cd. Partition kept the same at 10Gb, but upon restarting the screen went black and said "No operating system installed or partition corrupted, press 'R' to perform system recovery". Tried 'R' but nothing happened, seemed frozen. The SP1 cd is able to get some response upon a restart, but that is not the cd I want the computer to read and set up again. Sorry for the drawn out explanation, but I don't know where to go from here...

Sweet! I appreciate your help. Boot camp confuses me because I always had the thought that if you already had a win xp cd then you could just boot that up on your mac computer. Did not realize that if it is registered or tied to another computer that that would limit it, and force you to buy a whole new Win operating system.
I am just worried now that my partition/disk is messed up now after all those clean installs and unsuccessful boot camp installs and removals. I went into Disk Utility and ran a "repair disk" on my Mac HD. It came back with 9 warnings regarding SUID files that have either been modified or simply cannot be repaired. Will yet another "erase and install" from the Mac OS X Leopard cd fix all these or no? Is that the best way to go about a fix? Just want to make sure I have done no permanent damage so I can restore all my data off my external HD and possibly try boot camp againt, correctly, in the future.

  • Kernal panic with software install and restore disc

I'm trying to access my software install and restore disc for my powerbook G4 running tiger. Everytime I restart the computer with the disc in, and hold down c, I get a kernal panic. There is nothing wrong with the software install and restore disc, as far as I can tell.
    Thanks for any help!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

is this a tiger disk or a previous operating system? if it is a previous os restore disk, then it is not surprising it would panic. the only software restore disks you would need would be ones to run the apple hardware test and to install or reinstall os 9. otherwise, you should not use a software restore disk for a previous operating system, unless you have erased and installed your drive. Is it possible to have windows on another operating system and keep OS X on the original operating system ? and If yes, Would it do any changes on the original operating system ?

    1. On your computer, yes. Use Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, VirtualBox, or similar software.
    2. No; if you use an emulator, it may install system components. Back it up anyway.

  • Installation and deployment of operating system, applications and patches in Unix environment

Is it possible to use Configuration Manager 2012 (or 2012 R2) to perform remote installation of operating system, applications and patching in a Unix environment?
    Balaji Kundalam

ConfigMgr does not support Operating System Deployment for non-Windows OS flavors.
You can use the ConfigMgr client on a Unix device to install applications and to instruct the device to install patches. Basically, the client will download files and run a script against them.  If there is a patch manager in your flavor of *nix, you
can run a script to install the patches.
See the supported operating systems here:

  • Operating system name and version

HI, I was wondering where SCCM gets the value for "system resource - Operating system and version" from.
I have created a limiting collection for servers based on "%windows server%" query and a limiting collection based on "%windows workstation%" for workstations.
Now I noticed that there is also a value "Windows 7 Entreprise 6.1" for system-resource - Operating system name and version.
Therefore I would like to know where this information comes from as I can no longer be sure tat every device is covered by using "%windows server%" and "%windows workstation%"

WMI: Win32_OperatingSystem or from AD (don't have a console next to me right now to look that up)

  • Clean install and restore from Time Machine: Will i lose my applications ?

I want to do a Snow Leopard clean install instead of a an upgrade.
    1) How do I do the clean install and restore it from Time machine during the install ?
    2) If I do the clean install and restore from Leopard's time machine backup, will I retaing all my applications or I will only retain my personal files ?
    - If I don't retain my applications, how will my photos in iPhoto be restored without iPhoto ?

If you did a complete TM backup, then all your files, users, settings, and programs will be restored. You will have the opportunity to restore using TM at the end of the install. I would back at least my data up separately.
To erase and install (i.e., clean install), start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase your drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from TM.

  • Did a leopard clean install and restored via time machine

    Hi
Just done a leopard clean install and restored data via time machine, now when i run time machine i cant go back in time to restore other bits and bobs, any ideas
    thanks

This is not meant to be a snide comment, but I use Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper not TM. Used TM for a while but got tired of it, changed to CCC and then when Super Duper was updated for Leopard moved back to SD. I like it because (both SD and CCC) can be scheduled for whenever you want to run it and it only backs up files that have changed since last update. It also produces a bootable disk.

  • System Rescue and Restore

For some reason when I open Lenovo Think Vantage Tools my Rescue and Restore will not open.
I had just had it open yesterday...
Is there a  way to fix this?
Not too sure what's going on, but I'm hestitant to call priority tech support because they seem to push me towards a reformat and I just don't think it's that serious.
Is there a way to download the System Rescue and Restore option in the Lenovo Tool?
    What do you think?
    Thanks.

  • Powerbook g4 freezing after restart while using install and restore cd

i want to restore my powerbook to the original settings. i insert the install and restore cd that came with my computer and after i click the install mac os x icon, the computer prompts to restart. when the computer starts to restart, it freezes and won't read from the disc. it just continues to give the message you need to restart your computer.
anyone have any suggestions or help in this matter.
    thanks,

if PowerBook crashes like that when booted from original install CD, it is likely hardware problem.
try removing extra RAM, pull out AirPort card, reset PRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
and make sure CD is not scratched/dirty.
if you have original CDs kit, there supposed to be hardware test CD included with it, boot from test CD, see what it says.
