Optimizing clips for multiclip playback

I'm stretching the limits of my hardware and attempting a 9-camera multiclip edit (in the multiclip 9-up view).
Original footage is [email protected]
I've downmixed audio to stereo at 48KHz/24bit
The format of my final edit is TBD but meanwhile to create an EDL I'm happy to work in clip sizes that will allow the 3x3 multiclip playback (assuming it's possible on my hardware)
I'm sure there are many ways of approaching this but I have a relatively straightforward question:
What's the best clip format to use for optimal multiclip playback speed (I dont need audio)?
Forget about output format ... I just need to be able to see the individual clips in the multiclip view at, say a certain minimum resolution (remember my max of 640x480 anyway) and playback in realtime for editing.
I suspect I may also need some creativity here, eg: some clips internal; some external?

bogiesan: Well, without going into great details I need multiclip enough that I just spent several days trying to work out how to do it ... and it seems to be working with my humble ("toy") setup.
Regarding toys: all our machines will be toys next year.
The setup: (specs and requirements as above) ... I converted all clips to *Photo JPEG* at 320x240 resulting in file sizes about twice the original but a reasonable data rate (about 700K/s <= FW400 can easily deal with this) and moderate decode requirements. The encode was also pretty efficient with Compressor. I made the 9UP multiclip and put it in a _sequence set to NTSC DV (3:2)_ at 29.97fps. Everything plays smoothly in RT and I can do normal RT multiclip editing. Finally!
I couldn't get any other setup to work: MPEG1; certainly not DV due to data (and decode?) rate; in a rash move I even tried uncompressed 8-bit splitting files across the external FW400 and internal SATA but it couldn't deal (only talking 320x240).
Any comments before I put this to bed?

    Is there a recomended way to delete proxy and optimized clips once a project is completed and is ready for archive? also, can proxy and optimized clips be removed (to save space) once a project is ready for color correction and the original clips are used

    No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
    When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
    For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
    Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

  • No Multiclip Playback option in RT Playback

    Sorry to ask yet another multiclip question, but this is quick. I made a multiclip sequence, then dropped the clip into the sequence. When paused, the viewer shows all 4 videos and the canvas shows the one angle selected. But when I play the viewer, it no longer shows the four angles and instead only shows teh highlighted one full screen. I have open sync selected, BUT here's the catch, under the RT dropdown menu, I only have "Play Base Layer Only," "Use Playback Setting," and "Full Quality." I don't have a Multiclip Playback option. Now this isn't a standard multiclip sequence as I used Studio X's suggestion to make a sequence to match the clip settings. Do I need to have a standard, NTSC, HDV, DVCPRO, ect. sequence in order to view a multiclip live? I tried doing a multiclip with 4 DVCPRO HD files, but I didn't do the research ahead of time and my firewire 800 drive cannot supply nearly enough bandwidth to view all four at once.
    I hope this is clear enough and thanks,
    -Brian

    To Studio X- well there was one render file for the project, so I deleted that, but no luck. I also tried making another multicam sequence, and again while the sequence comes out the format of the clips, it still doesn't give a Multiclip Playback option, and I haven't, nor does it want me, to do a render on that sequence.
    To loyed256- I'm working off of a G-drive mini via Firewire 800 and that stutters several seconds into the DVCPRO multiclip. What I've done now is gone back to the original 640x360 files, pulled them into FCP, gotten the "these are not optimized for final cut" window, clicked OK, then made those .movs. into a 640x360 multiclip sequence. I just though about this, is it cause they're not optimized for final cut? Now I'm guessing that's the problem, so I'm gonna try to reimport them as diff formats final cut may like.
    Thanks so far,
    -Brian

    Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
    When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
    The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
    How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
    This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

    What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
    Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
    Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Multiclip playback settings

    I've run into a new issue (for me anyway) with multiclip editing. I'm working with a two-angle multiclip, editing in real time, and everything has been working fine. I walked away from the project, came back later, and suddenly the multiclip angles aren't showing up in the viewer anymore. It only displays the active angle during playback, then shows the multiclip angles when play is paused, or during scrubbing. To my knowledge, I didn't change any settings. Multiclip playback is enabled in the timeline, Playhead sync is set to open...What am I missing?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    All I can suggest is that you close the project, relaunch FCP, and go through the multi setup one more time, step by step.

    Thanks.  I do not have the experience on burning discs from iMovie for the movie after editing (ie for video discs players).  It seems that i cannot find the relevant command in the tool bar for this purpsoe.  Would you please show me the way?
    The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

    You have mentioned about Handbrake as a converter.  What is the RF no. Again, what is the best rate?  Furthermore, which format is more suitable or the best: H264 or mpeg 2/4?
    I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

    Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.

  • Optimal Settings for FCP6 on MacBook Pro?

    Up until a week ago, I've worked mostly on a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio 2. I've been fortunate enough to get a MacBook Pro (2.6Ghz) also outfitted with FCS2 and I'm wondering if there is such a thing as "optimal settings" for running FCS2 on the portable notebook.
    I'm referring to such things as memory and cache settings and Playback control, etc. I would like the MBP to run FCS as efficiently as possible. I know I won't get the same power-crunching ability as the Mac Pro but does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for any help.

    We have a 2.4Ghz MBP with the 256 MB video card.
    We have 4 GBs of RAM, which you should consider.
    However, without indicating what codec and cam you will be using, there isn't much more to say.
    If you are working with a DV or HDV camcorder, for example, use an ExpressCard 34 FW or eSATA card and an external HDD for media.
    That creates independent FW buses if you go that route or a FW bus and a eSATA HDD connection.

  • Optimal settings for h.264

    Does anyone have any recommended optimal setting for encoding DV footage to h.264 at full 720x480 resolution? I need setting that will provide quality with the smallest file size. Thanks.

    Does anyone have any recommended optimal setting for encoding DV footage to h.264 at full 720x480 resolution? I need setting that will provide quality with the smallest file size.You can try the "Movie to iPod" conversion export. This will produce a 640 x 480 (the "square" pixel representation of your 720 x 480 DV "rectangular" pixel movie) in the H.264 "LC" profile at roughly 12+ MBs per minute (i.e., roughly 1630 Kbps). If lower data rates are required and the movie does not need to be iPod compatible, you can use the H.264 "Main" profile in either the "Movie to H.264" or "Movie to MPEG-4" manual export options to limit the data rate to as low a level as you can tolerate in terms of playback "quality."

  • Best Quicktime compression for DVD playback later on?

    I have some DV footage that I had captured into MPEG-2 files on my old PC, then recently got a Mac and I want to be able to edit the footage on the Mac software I have and put it onto DVD for standard playback on a TV.
    I've got the latest Quicktime Pro with the MPEG-2 playback component, and another program I just found called MPEG Streamline that allows me to convert the MPEG-2 files into MOV files that can be edited in iMovie and Final Cut Express, of which I have, and then I plan on just using iDVD to put the projects on DVD.
    I've converted some footage using 3 different compressions: Apple DV 25, JPEG Motion A, and H.264 at NTSC 720x480 resolution so far, and cannot see any noticeable difference in the picture quality between the three converted files when played full screen with Quicktime, but of course, there is considerable difference between the resulting file size for each video. With all three files played back in Quicktime, there was some faint pixelation around moving figures in the video, even after setting the video stream to play back high quality.
    I would like to know if there is and what the best compression to use would be in converting the MPEG-2 files into MOV files or other format that's compatible with iMovie and Final Cut Express that will result in the best quality for DVD playback. I don't have Final Cut Pro so I don't have Compressor, which I understand, has a preset compression optimized for DVD playback later on.

    Nevermind, I just used DV compression and the playback quality came out just fine on the DVDs I've burned from the footage.

    You drag the clip from the browser to the clip on the timeline. Wait till the timeline clip goes white. Drop it and pick from the menu that appears the replace option you want.

    You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.

  • How do I create DRM Licenses that can be used for Offline Playback?

    [ Background ]
    Typically, a license is acquired from the DRM license server when the client video player encounters a video that is DRM-protected.   However, some use cases call for the ability for end-users to be able to play DRM content when a network connection is not available to the device.
    For example - the user wants to download a video from their home, acquire a license to play the content, and then get onto a train/airplane where a network connection isn't available.  On the train/airplane/etc..., the end user expects to be able to watch their video that they downloaded at home.
    [ DRM Policy Requirements ]
    For this use case to be possible, the DRM license must be acquired when the network connection is available.  In addition, the DRM license must be allowed to persist on the device disk.  For this to be possible, one value must be present in the DRM policy:
    1. Offline License Caching must be set to 1 or higher.  This policy parameter indicates how many minutes a license is allowed to be persisted to disk once it's been acquired by the license server.
    [ Workflow ]
    Now that the content has been packaged with a DRM policy that allows for offline caching (persistance) of a license, the video player simply has to acquire the license before the network connection is lost.  This can be accomplished via the typical API calls that the Video Player Application Developer would use to do a normal DRM license acquisition (DRMManager.loadVoucher()).
    For example, by using the DRMManager ActionScript3 API: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/net/drm/DRMManage r.html
    For other platforms supported by Adobe Access DRM (iOS, Android, etc...), please refer to the appropriate documentation around playback of DRM content on how to pre-fetch the DRM license.
    [ Workflow - iOS ]
    Enabling offline playback using the Primetime Media Player SDK (PSDK) for iOS requires a bit of self-extraction & instantiation of the DRM Metadata from the m3u8.  The reason for this is that as of PSDK v1.2, the PSDK APIs do not expose an mechanism for extracting the DRM metadata.
    You must manually (outside of the PSDK) get access to the DRM Metadata, instantiate a DRMContentData, and then use the DRMManager class to obtain a license for your content.  Afterwards, you may download your HLS content and stream it to your video player application locally.  Since the DRM license was pre-acquired before playback of the downloaded HLS content, your video player application does not require a network connection to acquire a DRM license.  Below is a code sample of obtaining the DRM Metadata from the m3u8 manifest and then using it with the DRMManager singleton.
    /*          Main entry points, playlistURL is url to a top level m3u8. */
    void PlayContent(NSURL* playlistURL)
              DRMManager* drmManager = [DRMManager sharedManager];
              if ([drmManager isSupportedPlaylist:playlistURL])
      // First we need a handler for any errors that may occur
                        DRMOperationError errorHandler = ^(NSUInteger major, NSUInteger minor, NSError* nsErr)
      /*          report error. */
      /*          Synchronous call to DRM manager to extract DRM metadata out of the playlist. */
                        [_drmManager getUpdatedPlaylist:playlistURL
                                                                                      error:errorHandler
                                                                                    updated:^(NSURL *newPlaylist, DRMMetadata *newMetadata)
                                   (void) newPlaylist; /*          updated URL is not used for this code sample. */
                                   if (newMetadata)
                                                      Assumes we are going to try to satisfy requirements to acquire license on the first policy in the metadata.
                                                      If there are multiple policies in the metadata, only 1 of them need to be satisfied for the license request to
                                                      go through.
                                             DRMPolicy* drmPolicy = NULL;
                                             for (id object in newMetadata.policies) {
                                                       DRMPolicy* drmPolicy = (DRMPolicy*)object;
                                                       break;
                                             if (drmPolicy == NULL)
                                                       /*          report error, this metadata is malformed. DRM metadata must contain at least 1 policy*/
                                             if (drmPolicy.authenticationMethod != ANONYMOUS)
    However, please note that the above only describes the DRM license handling for offline playback.  The actual playback of video using the Primetime client SDK is not officially supported.  You will have to use your own mechanism of saving and playback back HLS content locally within the application.
    Theoretically, it is possible to save the HLS stream to the app, and then embed an HTTP server to the app to stream the HLS content back into the application.  However, the Primetime client SDK doesn't not expose a way to do this directly, since it's not yet supported.
    cheers,
    /Eric.

    When I use my IPhone 4S to view the Shaw Go Movie Central App when I am at home I only use WiFi which is automatic, I start watching a show and sometimes I will get a message like "you can not use your cellular for video playback" or something close to that. Then I received an email from Telus saying I had used my 3G instead of Wi-Fi  using 75% of my data. How can this happen when I'm on Wi-Fi at home? If it switched to 3G for some reason I should have been disconnected and not just transferred to 3G network using up my data. What is the fix for this??

    It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
    I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
    Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
    Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
    Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • Connecting the canon SX50 to HDTV for video playback???

    Connecting the canon SX50 to HDTV for video playback???
    ok, Got this Camera, like it, except for a few confusing issues. I was told, in order to playback HD video onto my HDTV Samsung, with an HDMI4 on the left side of the TV, all I needed was a HDMI to HDMI cable.
     (#1) Shut off both TV and camera, plug the cable into this HDMI plugin, turn on the TV and Camera power supply, and it should recognize, then start paying.
    Well, I did it both ways, (#1) shut off,then turn on, and (#2) I just inserted the camera's HDMI to the HDMI4 while both were on, and tried opening up the Samsung's' Tools >Inputs, etc, and still nothing!
    Is there an easy way to accomplish this?
    The second issue i'm having , is how to shut off the slow motion playback, when viewing the videos, which were not recorded in slow--mo, and it's frustrating trying to playback in normal speed, but instead it plays in slow-mo.
    I'm not quite sure I'm recording in full HD...The payback is only 60i

    Thanks grazie!
    Well, i accomplished most of that and at least got the video on the display (Samsung Anynet HDMI3) But no sound!
    I was also able to control the SX50 TV Display with my samsung remote, kool.
    As far as the playbgack volume, I checked the camera, I did notice the OPERATIONAL SOUND was off, but when I played back the video on the camera itself, i did have volume.
    On that subject of Slow motion videos, if i'm watching each video, then see one playing back in slow-motion, does that mean i actually filmed it in slow motion, without knowing? ( i can send it through Pinnacle Studio 15HD and speed it back up, but theres no background volume anyway)  if i did unknowingly videotaped in slow motion, i bettter be more observant in the future.
    I'm going to increase that ''Operational sound'' on the tools / Camera and try to playback to see if I have any sound.
    I have a Yamaha 7.1 reciever, and TV, BD player,Time-Warner cable all is connected to this receiver....I was pushing all buttons for inputs to see which one would work for sound with video, but could not find any.  Thanks, or grazie grazie!
