Optimizing Images directly in Indesign??

Is there an option to optimizing your linked images directly in Indesign? I'm looking to select an image and have Indesign take its layout scale and apply that to the image file optimizing the linked image to constrain it's proportions to that which it is sized on the page in the layout in Indesign. I know that I'm able to have the option to edit original file and then do this sizing in Photoshop. But with hundreds of photos that have a multitude of different layouts and scales in contrast to their original files and to one another there must be a way to quickly have Indesign recognize the image's scaled size in the layout and optimize the original file to be that in proportion with its scaled size within layout, right??

When you output the file to PDF you can use the Compression Settings to automatically reduce the Resolution of the image to the size - basically it optimises the image size and resolution while making the PDF.
When you resize an image to fit a particular resolution and size in Photoshop - InDesign uses the exact same method.
The only problem with this is that when resample an image you usually need to Sharpen the image a small bit - or sometimes not at all - it's purely down to the sort of image it is - if it's a soft image then you probably wouldn't need to sharpen it, if it's a hard image with lots of detail and edge contrats then you probably would need to Sharpen the image when you resample it to a different size and resolution.
In about 10 years - I generally don't resample an image in Photoshop for output - I set the Compression settings in InDesign and let InDesign do the work - for the type of images I usually use I would never need to sharpen them as the difference is neglibile for the audience reading the material.
Howver, there are times like in Art catalogues or very high-end printing I would need to sharpen the images - and that's the only time I generally resample Images in photoshop.
There are some plugins that will do go through all the images and resample (not sure if it gives the option to add a sharpening filter?) but there are some out there - this one springs to mind
http://zevrix.com/linkoptimizer.php
But I don't think for the general public it's very important to add the sharpening filter - perhaps architecture, art, fine magazines etc where quality is an absolute must - then yes.

Is it better to save your files in photoshop cs5 (save for the web and other devices) or Lightroom 4.3. through the export function? Which method would result in better optimized images.

I think one is as good as the other regarding quality if the quality settings are identical.
Exporting an image as JPG in Lr is more convenient because you can check the box <Add to catalog> in the Export Dialog. Thus you always have your JPGs visible in Lr.

Yes, it is possible but it's not as convenient. When you send an image to CS5 for editing, the direct way (right-click and select <Edit in Photoshop CS5) works only with PSDs or TIFFs, depending on your settings in Preferences. You can save the image in CS5 as JPG for web but it will not be automatically imported and visible in Lr. You would have to import it manually either via the Import Dialog or via <Synchronize Folder>.
On top of that you are left with the PSD (that is automatically re-imported in Lr) that you don't need and it would have to be deleted manually.
Therefore it's far more convenient to create the JPG via export from Lr.
You can select the quality in the Export Dialog and you can sharpen for screen in three different amounts.

  • Images When Converting InDesign CS5.5 using Kindle plugin

    Hi,
I've been reading, looking for a solution to an image conversion problem. If I create and place an image in Illustrator (for example combining a car drawing and the sun-2 items in one drawing), then export an ePub, convert for Kindle to mobi using the Kindle plugin or Calibre, I am getting the second item (in this case the sun) below the car instead of where it should be. I've tried every conceiveable variation: re-did the image in Fireworks as a PNG, re-saved into jpeg, used the AI image directly, etc. I've unzipped the ePub, but can see no way to fix the car-sun problem.
original as placed in InDesign project                  converted version
Any help with this image problem much appreciated. (Wish: CS6 InDesign exports for mobi).
    Regards,

    Hi,
I didn't combine in the above image in InDesign. The car was a PNG to which I added a star drawing: probably tried it in Fireworks and Illustrator. But, not using InDesign (no star shape tool for the sun).
(However, I originally did combine the 2 separate images (car and sun) in my first attempt in InDesign, which produced the same result. When it converted poorly, I then deleted the 2 images from InDesign and placed a single combined image-probably imported the car PNG into Illustrator/Fireworks and drew the sun, then exported the combined and placed. The combined, see above, still converts with the same problematic result. Is it possible that although the initial 2 images were deleted in InDesign and replaced, and a re-export was done of the newly saved file, somehow InDesign is caching these 2 images?)
The InDesign PDF export's image, like in  the ePub, is fine.
    Puzzling result for the conversion.

  • CS5 Cannt make image catalogs in InDesign

I have upgraded to CS 5 for Mac from 3 then 4. I noticed that I can no longer select images in Bridge 4/5 and send then to Indesign and make a calalog. Id there a workaround for this? This feature was great for making multi-page image catalogues in Indesign and then making a PDF. Now that feature has been removed completely.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Tried those methods. They're 'interesting' and a bit helpful for quickly getting the initial group of frames drawn. But I couldn't find the 'gutter width', and when I use cmd+arrows while dragging, it's a bit too slow and kludgy. I think distrbute space would be quicker and more accurate.
But unfortunatley, I couldn't get the gap tool to be very effective no matter what key-command I tried. It appears (unless I'm missing something) that it is mostly helpful for adjusting the gap between 2 objects only, even if those are 2 rows or columns.
But I have a single row of 6 image frames spanning a page with the proper gap set, and no mater what I try I can't get all the gaps betweeen all images to grow/shrink in synch with each other. And I can't 'move' the gap between a couple imaages and have the others slide over with them. Only the image directly adjacent to the gap tool seems to be affected. So this seems kind of novel when adjusting between 2 images/rows/columns, but not very helfpul for anything more than this.
    - Please let me know if I'm misusing the gap tool.
    - And is the table bug really un-overcomeable? That would work so much easier.
    Thanks!

  • How do images embeded in InDesign link when using Creative Cloud on more than two desktops?

How do images embeded in InDesign link when using Creative Cloud on more than two desktops?

If I am understanding your question correctly, you shouldn't have to worry about embedded images in InDesign. Once embedded, the image is stored within the file.
If you are wondering about linked images... InDesign will follow the path on your computer and, if it does not find the image, you will recieve a notification. Edit: To prevent this, I would suggest packaging your file using File > Package... This will create a folder with all of your fonts and linked graphics so that you need not worry about broken links.  I just remembered that you cannot upload folders directly to Creative Cloud so a packaged folder wouldn't be very helpful unless you wanted to upload each file manually.
The best solution I see right now is to either embed the graphics in the document, or upload the images with your document to relink.
    I hope this helped,
    Michael

  • Is there any way to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4?

Are there any fixes or workarounds that allow me to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything I try now causes InDesign to freeze if I attempt to print. The only way is to export the file as a PDF. Thank you.

You shouldn’t be having a problem like that. I’m going to move this to the InDesign forum but it would help if you posted more details on the issues you’re having.
Another thing to try is exporting to INX from CS3 and opening the INX in CS5.5

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

I want to find the image tag name from Image layer name InDesign JavaScript?

    Hi,
You can use following script to fetch image tag name and the layer name on which it lie:
var imgBox = app.activeDocument.rectangles // fetch all rectangular frames from the active document
    for(var i = 0; i< imgBox.length; i++)
      if(null != imgBox[i].associatedXMLElement )
                var b = imgBox[i]
               alert("Image tag name "+imgBox[i].associatedXMLElement.markupTag.name + "\n exist on layer " + imgBox[i].itemLayer.name)
Hope this would help you to resolve your problem.

  • Create form elements directly in InDesign and publish them directly to PDF forms.

It would be great to add form elements directly in InDesign (e.g. on a specific layer) and when publishing the document to PDF automatically exporting them.
Now the work flow for adding one new field in am existing PDF form is quite complicated:
Edit the InDesign document (layout and text) in InDesing -> publish the PDF out of InDesign -> add the existing form fields (copy from existing form into new) -> move the fields to the right place (acrobat does not support paste in place!) -> add the new field (name it, place it, etc.) -> save the PDF.
For our company handling many different forms, with a lot of changes, this process is very error-prone.
Enabling this process in one application would help a lot. We are currently using CS3. The feature overview of CS4 does not seem to implement this.
    Anyone else suffering here?
    Best regards,
    Michael

Just incase you don't Adobe make a Windows only app Lifecycle which is a full blown form design app. Real layout tools, real calculation tools, vastly better than Acrobat which is too tedious for forms. If you company does lots of forms I'ld give it a look.
They have no intention to bring to Mac I gather, as Mac is a designers only domain according to one Adobe Evangelist I spoke to.

    Hello,
    Please help,
I am opening an Indesign CS3 EPS image file in Indesign CS4 which is made by combining 2 Clipping path images. The problem is: I am not ablt to use the images manually. however, automatic relink works fine. Although I don't know where that option is. I just want to use manual relink.
    any suggestions??
    thanks

I've seen cases where this "Mini Save"/ "Automatic Recovery" did not work at all.
    Rare cases, but:
Always when the InDesign file is opened on a different computer and you are working on a network. And someone pulls the plug from that other computer (shutting it down, ignoring the messages that another machine is hooked)!
SO: I would never rely or bet on the otherwise fabulous feature "Mini Save"/ "Automatic Recovery".
There is a startup script around in the web by Martin Fischer somewhere on the site hilfdirselbst.ch, that saves a copy of the actual file in a special folder every time you do a "save" or "cmd + s" adding a continous number to the auto saved file name.

  • Why can I no longer open a PE image directly in PE 11 by simply double clicking the image?

In contrast to previous versions, for whatever reason, I cannot open a PhotoShop Elements image directly by simply 'double clicking' on the image. When I do this with PE 11, PE 11 opens blank and I then have to go to the Open menu and find the image I want to open (the very image I 'clicked' on in the first place)? Why this extra time consuming step?
    Thanks,
    Dale

    Thanks for the reply.
However, I don't understand your answer.
To refresh my memory, I just now selected a jpg. image and opened it with PSE 10. When PSE 10 opened, there was my image, ready to be worked with. However, when I repeated the exact same thing with with PSE 11, PSE 11 opened a blank page and I had to go to the Open menu and reopen my image. I don't understand why this extra step is required with PSE 11.
The screen shot you suggested means nothing to me in post http://forums.adobe.com/message/4876725#4876725 as I've no idea where it comes from or what I'm looking at.
    Can you provide further details?
    Thanks.
