Option+arrow / Command+arrow in Terminal

Hello,
I'm using quite often the those two key combination to skip respectively a word or go at the end/beginning of a line.
I'm also using terminal quite often (my Linux part ;)) but those combination don't work there and I have the use the [bash-like shortcuts|http://www.ice2o.com/bashquickref.html]. Note that all of them don't work such as move fwd/back one word.
Any idea how to make option/command+arrows work ?
Thanks,
Tex

Any idea how to make option/command+arrows work ?
You can see whether option-arrow and command-arrow generate anything that bash can work with using the following:
cat -v
no press the keys you hope bash will see.
When I played with this, I say that option-arrow generated a different escape sequence from just arrow keys.
But command-arrow up/down affected scrolling into the saved previous screen info. command left/right did nothing.
For the option-arrow keys you could create a set of bash bind commands in your .bash_profile to remap that escape sequence into the bash commands that do what you want.
For Command-arrow you would need to use a hotkey mapping utility that translates command-arrow into the bash commands you desire.
And yes, you should pursue terminal and bash questions in the Unix forum as suggested.

  • Option Arrow no longer advances cursor in text

I'm using OS X Mavericks 10.9.1, and rely on keyboard shortcuts a lot.  Recently, for some reason, the Option+Left Arrow and Option+Right Arrow have stopped advancing the cursor by word.  This used to work in all text controls, and now works in none.  Has anyone else encountered this?  Has anyone else solved this?  I've looked at the keyboard settings and can't find anything that would seem to indicate why this would not be working.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be related to having a Unicode Hex Input source set in the Keyboard preferences.  A few months back I added this keyboard.  Trying to diagnose the issue today I removed that keyboard and my Option+Arrow is working properly now to move the cursor by word.
Interestingly enough, adding that same input source back doesn't cause things to fail.  I'm not sure why it wasn't working, or how to completely reproduce it, but if anyone else is having an issue with this check and see if you have the Unicode Hex Input listed as an Input Source.  If so, try removing it and see if that fixes the problem.

  • Using option + arrow keys

    Hi All,
Just upgraded to Lion. I am used to using the Option + Arrows keys for back browsing. Lion has changed this to Option + [ key. Is there anyways to change it back?
    Thanks.
    Adam

The changes remain intact for me. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Option + arrow keys suddenly inserts new columns

This happens frequently when I work in Numbers.
When I shall edit text in a cell, option + > and option + < all of a sudden cease to work. Instead of jumping to next or previous word, a new column is inserted.
I don't know what causes it. I haven't found another solution than closing the document and reopen it.
    Fred

I always edit text directly in cells and option + arrow keys normally jump to next or previous word.
Yes they are greyed out for me too.
I just noticed that if I by mistake press Cmd + return (instead of option + return) when I want to edit, it causes option + arrow keys to insert new columns. I can revert to normal by placing the cursor in the formula bar and using option + arrows. After that option + arrow keys jump to next or previous word also when I edit directly in cells.
Thanks for telling about using the formula bar. Now I don't have to close and reopen the document.

  • How to disable Option-Shift-Command-Q (Log Out immediately)

Does anybody know, how I can disable the shortcut Option-Shift-Command-Q, which Log me out immeditely. That’s because I sometimes hit this combination accidently while trying to press Option-Shift-Command-A or Option-Shift-Q (for the French quotation mark »).
I have tried to assign a new shortcut for the menu item using the system preference panel, but this doesn’t work.
I hope, someone can help me with this because it drives me crazy ...
    Thnaks!

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't help. I don't have a keyboard & mouse pane I only have keyboard or mouse to choose from, so I go to keyboard and there is nothing that looks like that screen. But I did find something that fixed my Command/Option/Control buttons from being locked, I clicked on Keyboard & then Modifier Keys, and it let me select no action for each of those, BUT it doesn't have the Shift option.
So now my problem is, when I press Shift twice in a row, it makes it lock. It's as if I'm holding down Shift all the time and I have to press Shift again to unlock it. I want to disable this. Does anyone have any ideas how to do that? I think I explained it wrong in my 1st post I thought I'd explain again (: But now I figured out it's called Modifier Keys soo I feel like I'm close to finding the answer. lol (:

  • How to use keyboard shortcut OPTION SHIFT COMMAND PLUS?

The application I am using has two keyboard shortcuts for changing the KERN of some text:
    TIGHTEN = OPTION + SHIFT + COMMAND + MINUS
    LOOSEN = OPTION + SHIFT + COMMAND + PLUS
The TIGHTEN command works fine but the LOOSEN command doesn't. If I plug in an external keyboard then it works fine as long as I use the or on the NUMPAD.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for your post. I tried your suggestion and indeed got the Excel short-cut back. It wasn't obvious as "Mission Control" and "Application Windows" are mapped to F9 and F10 (rather than the ctrl-shift-down" combo).
It's ok since I don't really have any use for shortcut launching "Mission Control" or "Application windows".

  • Shortcut "Command + T" opens terminal instead a new tab of finder

    Hi!
I'm a new member of forum and new user of OS X.
On my MacBook appeared a strange problem after cleaning OS X (Mavericks) by Onyx:
When I'm in a Finder window and using shortcut Command+T  appears Terminal window instead a new tab in Finder.
I tried to reset to the default keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences but it didn't work.
Has anyone had a similar problem and already has a solution?
    I will be grateful
BTW sorry for my ungrammatical English

    Try this:
    1) In the address bar, enter''' about:config''' and press '''Enter'''.
    2) In the "'''Filter'''" type '''restriction'''
    3) "browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction" should appear. '''Double-click''' it and enter 0
That will force everything to go to new tabs instead of Windows.

  • Option and Command Key Swapped on Built-in Keyboard

My option and command keys are swapped on the built in keyboard. They work fine with a external USB keyboard. I have checked that the keyboard & mouse > modifier keys preference and they aren't remapped in there. In fact, changing the mapping in there has no affect on the command and option keys.
Any suggestions? Is there a plist file that I can trash?
    Thanks

I was finally able to fix this by plugging in my non-Apple external keyboard. Once I did this, a drop down menu appeared in the modifier keys window that let me select the internal MacBook keyboard and fix the mapping issue.

  • I can not open iPhoto. this is the messageShut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command ki get.

Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • How do I get capslock, shift, control, option, and command to work normal?

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard onto a new hard drive and restored the rest of my machine from a Time Machine backup.
The behavior of capslock, shift, control, option, and command have changed and are freaking driving me nuts.
Every time I hit shift/control/option/command an image of the key flashes up on the top right of my screen. I want this to stop and go back to a normal keyboard.
Also, the caps lock is no longer doing sane basic behavior like "Tap once for on, then again for off" like every other 3 billion keyboards on the planet. Now its doing this insane thing where I have to double tap it to turn it on, then again to turn it off, but sometimes it doesn't go off.
How do I get the keyboard in 10.6 to just simply act normal again?

Sounds as if you have Sticky keys turned on.
Turn of via System Prefs > Universal access > Keyboard
You can also press the shift key 5 times to turn Sticky Keys on or off.
Check the rest in System Prefs > Keyboard > Keyboard > Modifier keys.

  • Using cmd-shift-left/right arrows in Terminal

    Hi,
Is there a way to revert to Leopard's shortcuts for switching tabs in Terminal?
I'm working on a daily basis with both Leopard and Snow Leopard and the fact that I have to use cmd-shift-left/right in the former (which is coherent with Safari) and cmd-left/right in the latter (which is coherent with I wonder what?) is extremely annoying.
I tried using System Preferences Keyboard pane to assign the shortcut to no avail, but it doesn't seem to work at all.
BTW, I really don't understand why Apple changed this shortcut. As with any application, changing shortcuts is not really considerate for end users ;P
    TIA

I don't know why you have command+left or right arrow for tab switching. i have command+shift +left or right arrow. running 10.6.2 here. also, the other shortcuts for this that show up in the window menu are command+} and command+{. those can be also be changed in keyboard system preferences. that should have worked for you. i can do it without problems. but I suggest you reset your terminal preference file. that should restore teh default shortcuts. quit terminal and delete the file ~/library/preferences/com.apple.terminal.plist. start terminal and the shortcuts should be commandshiftarrows.

  • How can I change the measurement of the kerning quick key? (When you press option + arrow keys)

Right now when I am using the quick keys to kern type, everything jumps too far. I want to lower the measurement or unit that it moves when I use this, as it is currently driving me nuts.

Not likely you can change it, unless something out of wack is causing it.
    Anyway
Which operating system are you using?
In photoshop under Help>System Info find the version of photoshop at the top of the list?
Which version of photoshop were you using before?
Have you looked in the Character panel while kerning to see the increments of kern while pressing the shortcuts?

  • Command line in Terminal !

Is there a command or commands that can be ran in the terminal to see if the ethernet port is active or turned off?
    Don
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Frank,
It doesn't matter what I plug into the ethernet port on this iMac G5. It won't show anything.
sidenote: I was having similar problem on my ibook connecting to video camera. I did get a green lite on connecting the camera at the hub. But, not the ibook. After finally getting the IP down right on the ibook. It connected instantly. Right now my ethernet is set to connect automatically without dns servers listed. This works well with airport. If I make new location I have no other option than connect using PPP in the TCP/IP. Now if I can set my IP that might make a difference. I can't. I'm issued a different IP each sign in. When it was working I had dns servers configured. Now when I do that it does not. There might have been something else that got turned on in the process but, I have no idea what it was. And in reality I am not able to connect to anything whether it is a known good cable or device. I can only assume 2 things. The actual port is dead. Or reinstall 10.4.6.
