Option for university

I am going to university next year and it is a small uni. There is group work and presentations for assignments that will need to be done during tutorials. I have a dell desktop (4 years old) and a dell laptop (loaned from my high school, which i am returning). Basically after next month, I will only have a desktop.
I will be commuting to uni which is in the city, Sydney. My textbooks will be available as e-books. I will handwrite notes in lectures (including the use of a stylus if necessary) and commute one hour every day. My uses include typing up papers, internet, email, music/movies, photos, video chat and an organiser.
The only times I need protability is for group work, making powerpoint presentations and library (if no computers are available). I would like a laptop, however the costs add up for a case, cooling pad, security locks. My concerns with getting a laptop only include if it gets stolen and the heaviness of a larger screen (i would need 15" if it is my only device).
I would love an iPad 2 if it would suit my needs
I came up with a few options:
1. iMac 21.5" + ipad 2 16GB
2. Macbook Pro 13" only
3. Macbook Pro 13" + iPad 2 16GB
4. Macbook Pro 15" only
5. iMac 21.5" + a cheap dell laptop or netbook.
Which option would be suit my needs?

What about a 13" MBA? The same number of pixels as a 15" MBP but in a 13" screen size.
You say you have a desktop PC, you can use the display as a monitor for your MacBook. PC displays usually have more than one input.
The iPad 1 is still available if you want to save a few more dollars.

My son is starting university and considering buying a MacBook Pro (we are a Mac family). However, his math textbooks (calculus and linear algebra) come with bundled software, or keys to downloadable software, that only runs on Windows. You want a review that looks at both side by side.
Vista is no more a problem than any other OS, and probably easier in some ways.
From around the time Vista came out, so rather dated, and once SP1 is out, well I found BootCamp 1.3 and recent updates and drivers have made using 64-bit fine, stable, and can run all day w/o problems.

Having used Vista for the last year, and OS X for 7, I think it would be easier to go with Vista than "back in time" with XP - if Windows is a new experience.
If they are going to have to use and learn Windows, they'll need to get up to speed on how to lock down their system and use it. That would make a VM easier to get started but yes, native Windows (BootCamp) would be same as using a PC mostly. And force your son to learn Windows (but get him a book to help, too).

Universe Connection - options for specifying database authentication

Are there any options for specifying the id and password for a database connection from the Universe Designer other than entering them directly into the tool? Our information security group prefers to administer security accounts (i.e. user id's and passwords) in standard security products as compared to having to know development tools (e.g. Business Objects).

to create a connection you have to enter a user name or password for this connection.
in your case, your Administrator can create those connections in the designer before they create any universe and then give an access to which developers access which connections to create specific universes.
to create a connection there is no other way more than entering the user name and password.
in the XI 3.0 there is some new and very good option "User BusinessObjects Credentials Mapping"
which i think send the current connected business objects user name and password to the connection user name and password.
its just map the user name of the BO system to the user name of the connection, and same thing for the password, and for this you have to have a DB user name for every BusinessObjects user name,
this is wide use with oracle databases.

Do not have the option for the universal counting leader in project asset menu

I don't seem to the option for a universal counting leader under the "new item" action, located in my project asset menu on expert view. I am using Premiere Elements 13, on a Mac, version 10.9.5. The others are there -- adjustment layer, title, bars and tone, etc, just not the universal counting leader. Any ideas?

The Universal Counting Leader is there in Premiere Elements 13 Windows 7 64 bit.
I am strictly an Elements Windows user so I am not sure of the history of the Universal Counting Leader in Mac versions.
If you do not find it, it is probably one of the Windows Only features when one compares Windows Mac versions of the program.
Unless a Premiere Elements 13 or earlier Mac user comes forward to confirm one way or the other, I going with this one being a Windows Only for
Premiere Elements 13 and possibly earlier versions as well.

"database logon" option for schedule report

When scheduling a report,
Crystal report has the "database logon" option in "shcedule" property page.
But I can't find the "database logon" option for webi report or deski report.
Is this by design.

We do not have data base logon option while scheduling the report.
I am not sure what is the significance of it in Crystal but in Webi or deski report we do not need it. We have connections for every universe/report and that has these database log on credential in it. Based on it reports get refresh and run.

Please help! New PC with Windows 7, now won't give option for duplex Color Laserjet 2605dn

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help. I have an HP Color Laserjet 2605dn, and after 4 years with a Dell laptop (and Windows XP) I had to get a new computer, this one with Windows 7. When I plugged in the printer for the first time, it loaded drivers and seemed to work great - EXCEPT there is NO option for duplex printing in the effects or finishing areas. So I went to the HP website and downloaded the Universal Print Driver, which DOES have duplex, but it won't print to the 2605dn printer!!!
I am ready to throw this out the window. I don't recommend buying anything new while you have PMS...hahahaha. Seriously, if someone could help, my stress level would drop dramatically. I print a lot, and not doing it duplex would waste so much paper!

Enable the duplexer as described in the Vista / Windows 7 Duplex Troubleshooting Guide as follows: go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the printer, Printer properties, Device settings, Installable Options, set the "Duplex unit for 2-sided printing" to installed, OK.

Macbook Pro versus Air for university student (pharmacy)

Hey everyone,
So I love all my Apple products, and I plan to get some sort of Mac laptop for university in a few weeks. I'm going to be a pharmacy student at UBC, (so I'm not going into design or video graphics or anything) I basically want a fast, reliable computer that will last the extent of my Bachelor's degree, I really don't want to be replacing one every year or so. Battery life is somewhat important. I'm trying to decide between the MacBook Pro, (the $1200 one?) and the newer Macbook Air, (about $1200 as well?).
Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'd agree with Kappy, especially if buying for a long haul like a 3 or 4 year degree program. A MBP is the better choice.
And don't necessarily feel that pharmacy won't have its own computationally intensive aspects either. Large databases, especially chemical and drug structural databases and such, can be fairly tasking in terms of cpu use and RAM and harddrive space.
Don't forget your education discount options - http://www.apple.com/ca/buy/hied/ and ask at the UBC bookstore if they offer any machines with 3year AppleCare options (some educational institutions can do this for machines purchased through them - gives you 4 years of total warranty coverage).
P.S. I did my M.Sc. at U.Vic in the 1990's - I loved the west coast!

Modifying Advance CSV export options for Web Intelligence

When we download a Webi report as a CSV(witha dvance options)
In the CSV download advanced options -- We have options for specifying the 'Text Qualifier which is ( " and ' ) and Delimiter (, and ; and tab)
I would like a 'none' option for the 'Text Qualifier' i.e the output columns of the csv should not be enclosed by single or double quotes....
Any suggesstions as to where I can modify this.

1. have you created any hierarchy in the universe ? after creating required hierarchy, in the webi report you need to enable drill mode.
2. you can use opendocument url with sReportName parameter. Please check this doc for details: http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir3/en/xi3-1_url_reporting_opendocument_en.pdf
But for this you need to export the report to InfoView.

"Block EDIT option*" for all WEBI Reports with Administrator Account

I had opening CMC with Administrator Account.Due to some reasons i want to "Block EDIT option" for all WEBI Reports.Just Viewing is sufficient.In the same way for Universe"Blocking EDIT object option".Instead of Administrator guide reference (chap no 18 &19)option.Could you help in steps resolving issue.Thanks in advance.

Hi Swapna,
You could perform the following steps:
1. Login to CMC.
2. Go to Folders >> Manage >> Top Level Security
3. Click on Add Principal and add the user or group for which you have to set the security.
4. Click on assign Security >> Advanced tab >> Add/Remove Rights.
5. Select Content >> Web Intelligence Report
6. assignt "Edit Object" right as denied and click on apply ok.
This would help you to block edit option for only webi reports and all the webi reports in your environment.

Bought an Airport Express in Slovenia, planning to use it in Moscow. When configuring, Moscow is not an option for location. I ticked Ljubljana for set up; got green light, but network not working. Is choice of city the problem?

While on vacation, I bought an Airport Express in Slovenia, planning to use it in my Moscow apartment. I plugged everything in, seem to have followed the directions properly for configuration - except for one thing. Moscow does not come up as an option for location. So I tried ticking Ljubljana (Slovenia) as location (since that's where I bought it). The cycle seemed to have worked, I got a green light on the Airport Express, but the network didn't work. I tried going in to change the location, and chose something called Universal, but the network still didn't work.
Is the fact that Moscow doesn't come up among the options going to be a problem? Or is it possible I am doing something else wrong?
Anyone have any insights?

AirPort Utility for the iPhone, iPad, etc does not support the older version of the AirPort Express that you have.
Try installing AirPort Utility on the Lenovo laptop to see if you can configure the AirPort Express that way.
If the laptop runs XP SP3 or Vista SP2.....use AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows - Support - Apple
Windows 7....use AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows 7 - Support - Apple
Remember that the SB5101 modem must be fully reset before it will associate correctly with the AirPort Express. That means pressing the reset button on the back of the modem (if present) and powering off the modem for at least 30 minutes, then connecting it to the AirPort.

There is no FaceTime app for the iPhone if that's what you're asking. FaceTime is accessible through your Contacts as one of the options in how to contact a person -- there is no standalone FaceTime app for iPhone.
If you mean how to disable FaceTime, you can do that in Restrictions (Settings/General/Restrictions).

I turn off all calendars but the birthdays. Select [Print]. Choose all the months you want to see. Deselect all calendars but birthdays. Click [Continue]. On the next menu, go to "Layout", select how many pages to print on the paper. I usually print a border around each calendar then you're good to go!
By only printing the birthdays calenar, you won't get too many appointments to get in the way of brain storming and future planning, yet the computer still thinks its printing a useful calendar.

BODS : Datastore options for SAP R/3 - need clarity for use

Hi All.
Another request to understand the datastore optiono n BOXI 3.1 BODS existing installation.
We are trying to pull a new table from SAP R/3 into BODS and we find that ABAP program is not getting generated as expected. And terminates. When we tested a simple workflow.
While creating a new datastore for SAP R/3 Source :
When we look at the datastore we find the following options for R3 Source ;
ABAP Execution option :
Execute preloaded
Generate and execute
Under data transfer method we find ;
Shared directory
Direct download
FTP
Custom transfer
Then we have working directory on sap server
local directory
generated ABAP Directory
Am testing a simple workflow of pulling data from SAP R/3 in a dev machine.
But am not understanding.
which option of ABAP Execution, and data transfer , path would work in co-ordination.
Because when i say direct download and say generate and execute it throws error.
Can anyone help me with combinations of the options to choose for a R/3 source. And the implications thereof.
I had created a folder under local bods server D:\Bodi. And given the path for data transfer.
But the files are not getting generated for whatsoever reasons.
Any advise on this would be helpful.
Also found a bit unusual, that there was no button to test the connection to be correct or not, a TEST connection button is not there. Which i felt, could be included.
Note : on the existing production system, we have chosen execute preloaded; shared directory on sap server. and shared that folder path for the user and given full rights. But while we try to do the same on the dev machine a test before transporting on production, a simple workflow does not work.
would like to know what settings on sap server, really affect the data store options on the BODS

Indeed, BODS <> SAP connectivity can be tricky.
For a development environment, I suggest you select the option "Generate and execute" for your "ABAP Execution Option." What this means is that DS will create, on the fly, small-ish ABAP programs. These ABAP programs will be written, in plain text, to a local directory on the DS job server, in the folder specified in "Generated ABAP Directory". You can see them in there after an attempted job execution, assuming the job involves the creation of an ABAP program. The ABAP program name is specified in the properties of an ABAP data flow, under Options > ABAP Program Name. If you can't, perhaps the DS job server process doesn't have full rights to that folder - ? After being generated on-the-fly, they'll be transferred to SAP to execute. The SAP user you use to connect to SAP must have sufficient rights to upload-and-execute these ABAP programs, and that's a fairly substantial set of rights. What's required is documented in the BODS supplement for SAP. Often, to get things running, your friendly local Basis admin will grant SAP_ALL to the DS user, to see what rights are being invoked.
Once all that jazz is working, you need to get the data back. There are a number of ways to do this. The method of data transfer is specified in "Data transfer method," where, ignoring "Custom transfer," you have three choices:
1) Direct Download: easiest and slowest. This method tells SAP to attempt to stick data in the client-side folder specified in "Local directory." Try this first.
2) Shared folder: This is recommended when you have SAP being hosted on a Windows box. Basically: you set "Working directory on SAP Server" and "Data Services path to the shared directory" to point to the same folder. SAP uses the "Working directory on SAP Server" to find this folder, and DS uses the other setting. So, for instance, if you were going to use the Shared folder method, you could set "Working directory on SAP Server" to "E:\BODS_Transfer", and, assuming E:\BODS_Transfer was shared-out as "BODS_Transfer", you could set "Data Services path to the shared directory" to
dev12.somecompany.com\BODS_Transfer . Then, you'd need to setup all the relevant security, as both SAP and DS need rights to read and write files in this folder.
3) FTP (this is the method I usually use): SAP writes the "transport files" you're after (i.e., the data) in the folder specified in "Working directory on SAP Server". Then, you need to establish ftp connectivity to that folder from the DS job server's perspective, which you do by entering the ftp host name and the path to that folder in "FTP host name" and "FTP relative path to the SAP working directory". In my opinion, the "relative" business is a little confusing, and I just typically enter the full ftp path, beginning the path w/ a forward slash, like "/usr/sap/tmp/BOBJ" or something like that. You also need to obtain a separate username and password for the ftp connectivity. Note that this name and password has NOTHING to do with the SAP username and password; you're just setting-up DS to act as an ftp client. I strongly encourage you to test ftp connectivity by using a regular ftp client from the DS job server and attempt to connect to your ftp host using the username and password you were given, and attempting to fetch some sample test file. If you can't do this, manually, then DS won't be able to do it, either.

The error console on my browser says there are a couple of errors, which are usually where this comes from.

How do I use my iPad with Retina Display model MD514LL/A with apple tv? I see no option for airplay and I have the latest update.

Is your apple tv also up to date?
Are they both on the wireless network, or is the apple tv using an ethernet cable?
Reboot your wireless router, your apple tv, and your ipad, in that order.
