Options for Bandwidth intensive application

I appreciate any recommendations, I have a remote office needing to access a very bandwidth intensive application (scanned TIF images) currently we are looking at a 100Mb metro ethernet or DS3 type of link to our office where the DB resides. Are there any content caching products or new technology that would help me improve access to this application?

in order to accomodate content caching as you've described you need, for an enterprise class environment, you'll want to check out the Cisco CSS line of content switches.
a quick view of the CSS abilities for content caching includes:
(taken from cco documentation)
* examining network traffic for web content requests
* bypassing the cache automatically for non-cachable content
* distributing content requests to maximize cache hits
* bypassing the cache or redistributing requests among the remaining cache services if a cache service fails
* proxy caching capabilities.
among other capabilities, this device would allow you to create a 'farm' of web servers where your content can be housed utilizing faster response times and high availability.
please see the following link for more info on the CSS and its abilities:
(there are other 'model' versions of the CSS than the one linked here)

  • SQLJ for Data Intensive Application?

    Hi!
I am thinking about writing a program that is very data-intensive data-mining application. It will process millions of records where each record is a 80 byte character. I will need to do a lot of comparisons and sub-string operations. I wonder if anyone out here has done some similar project in Java before. Any information would help. I am particularly interested in looking for information pertain to reading all data into memory for Java processing. Also, should I use PL/SQL or Oracle C instead?
    Thanks.
    Aaron

it depends what you mean by "millions" of (80 byte)records
if you mean about 5 million, then you will be dealing with 400 Megs or info at one time, and if you have a fancy computer with a whole bunch of ram you probably won't have any problem just loading all the info into ram at once. but if your talking 200 million well then you will probably have some redesigning to do.
Other then that the processing time really just depends on what you are doing to the data, and since you haven't been specific about it it is hard to tell how the performance of your program will be.

  • Why does Safari (and other OS programs) provide only one option for launching an application?

I greatly appreciate the improvements that came with the Mavericks OS, but either I cannot figure it out, or there is more that Apple can improve. Firefox is my default browser that opens when I click a link. (I do this because I can set Firefox to private browsing, which decreases cookies, history, etc.) When I click on a link in Mail that I want to open in Safari, however, e.g., a link for GotoMeeting, I have only two options: (1) open with Firefox or (2) open in reader. It would be superb if there was at least one additional option to open the link in Safari, where it nicely integrates with Calendar and allows me to keep that event in history. It would be even better if I had more options to open other programs.
Am I missing something? Is this already an option that I have not yet discovered?
Many thanks for a great update to Mountain Lion!

You can set Safari to private browsing > Safari menu > Private browsing.

  • Which MacBook for graphically intensive applications?

    Hey all
Im planning to get a MacBook for my GCSE's, and im leaning towards the Air.
I will be running applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS5, After Effects CS5, Lightroom CS5, and Final Cut Express regularly, so would a 13" 1.86ghz MBA C2D Processor with 4gb of RAM be able to run these apps fast and efficiently with no lag? Or should I opt for the baseline MBP 13"? Im worried that it may be laggy as my cureent Core i3 HP can not handle AE well, but then again, it does have many problems such as slow HDD and only 3gb of Ram
Any help on which i should get? The 13" MBA 1.86ghz 4GB or 13" MBP 2.4ghz?
    Thanks

For your needs the described MBA would perform worse than your I3 which is a faster processor. Stick to the 15" MBPs - I5 or I7 which have the better GPUs.

  • Uninstall options for an AIR application

    Hey all,
when distributing an air app is it possible to have any control over
    the install/uninstall process(.air)?
For instance i want to put an "uninstall" link on the start menu to
make it easier for the user to uninstall the app.
And also when the app is uninstalled i want it to remove a db file
that is created at run-time in the user folder.
    Is any of those possible?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I have the exact same question.
I aswell noticed that files in the applicationstoragedir are not removed when uninstalling your app.
Hope someone from adobe can help us with this one.

  • What is the architecture for a kiosk application?

    Hi gurus,
What do you think is the best option for a kiosk application, running on a touch screen station, that doesn't allow the user to switch to other apps?
I'm think on an applet, or a web page, or a JFrame in full screen (if that is possible).
Any ideas from your vast expertise?

There's no way to to ensure that a user can not switch apps using pure java. The operation system has to support kiosk mode in order to do something like that (e.g. Windows WEPos).
You can, however, get pretty close using a JFrame in full screen exclusive mode (http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/awt/GraphicsDevice.html#setFullScreenWindow(java.awt.Window)). A tool like auto hotkey can be used to disable things like alt+tab, and you can disable the task manager in group policies.

Initially I had downloaded Document 2 (Free) application to view my doc, ppt and xls files. I was not able to edit the files so there was an option for upgrade the Document-2 free to paid version. I have upgraded the Document 2 application. But on my iPad now there are to application present Docemnt-2 (Free) and Document-2. I am not able to open any existing document using the upgraded version of application. How do I connect all the existing txt,PPT,XLS doccument to the new upgraded Document-2 application and then to edit it on my iPad.

As suggested I had deleted the free application and did a hard restart the iPad. I have again copied the document using iTunes. But I am not able to edit any document using this app. Document 2 (paid version) supports editing features of the txt/ xls /ppt files. Is there any problem while loading the Document 2 app. If I reload then do I need to purchase again?

  • Best logging option for SharePoint 2013 on-premise application

What is the best logging option for SharePoint 2013 on-premise application?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to know the logging option in SharePoint 2013.
SharePoint has its own logging system called “Unified Logging System (ULS)“, we can use the ULS log to see if anything unexpected occurred, we can use the
ULSViewer for more convenient log viewing experience.
Or we can log information programmatically.
There are some logging classes can be used, such as
SPMonitoredScope ,  SPDiagnosticsService, or create your own “Diagnostics Service” – which is technically just a new class inherited
    from SPDiagnosticsServiceBase.
We can also utilize diagnostics.asmx web service for the client side applications.

  • Any options for hyperthreading? Envy 17/i7

    Hi,
not sure which forum to post this in, but since we're talking about hardware level concurrency...
are there any options configurable for hyperthreading on the envy 17 (3002ea)? Processor is an i7.
I have an intensive application that I know for a fact won't benefit from additional logical cores (it only uses two threads), so I want to experiment a bit.
    thanks

    Hi Celeste,
Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
If you are running the computer on battery -- and you are leaving it alone for five minutes, you may actually want it to sleep.  It uses far fewer resources to sleep than it does to stay active.  Your system provides for "rapid wake up" and should respond soon after you open the lid when you again need it.
OK -- assuming you cannot wait even a few seconds!  Smiling.
You might have missed a secondary setting that puts the notebook to sleep when it is running on battery.  The notebook might be going to sleep sooner than you would like.
Control Panel > set icon view > Power Options > Change when the computer sleeps >
On Page:  Change settings for the Plan
There are two main adjustments:  On battery and Plugged in
You need to adjust the settings for the Display and for the amount of time the computer waits before it goes to sleep.
You can also adjust the brightness to save battery, that is, you can set the brightness to be a bit "less bright" when running on battery.

  • Which kind of cache group is suitable for the intensive insertion operation

Hi Chris, sorry for call you directly. Because you give me many good answers about my many newbile questions these days:)
You told me that the dynamic cache group is not suitable for the intensive insertion operation
because each INSERT to a child table has to perform an existence check against Oracle even if load the cache group into RAM manually(Please correct me if wrong).
Here I have many log tables that they only have a primary key and no foreign references and they are basically used to reflect changes from the related main tables.
Every insert/update/delete on the main table will insert a log record in the related logging table(No direct foreign references).
In order to cache these log tables, I have to create a independent cache group for each one, right?
I do not want load these logs data into RAM because my application do not use them or these logs will waste my RAM clearly.
so here comes my question.Which kind of cache group should I use to gain the best performance with no loading them into RAM?
As my understand, the dynamic cache group load data on demand while the regular cache group need load all the data into RAM firstly and it won't load data from oracle anymore?
    Thanks in advance
    SuoNayi

Let me be more specific. Consider this cache group:
CREATE DYNAMIC ASYNCHRONOUS WRITETHROUGH CACHE GROUP CG_SWT
    FROM
    TPARENT
PPK NUMBER(8,0) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
    PCOL1 VARCHAR2(100)
    TCHILD
CPK NUMBER(6,0) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
    CFK NUMBER(8,0) NOT NULL,
    CCOL1 VARCHAR2(20),
FOREIGN KEY ( CFK ) REFERENCES TPARENT ( PPK )
INSERTS into TPARENT will not do any existence check in Oracle. An INSERT INTO TCHILD has to verify that the corresponding parent row exists. If the parent row exists in TimesTen then no check is doen in Oracle. If the parent row does not exist in TimesTen then we have to check if it exists in Oracle and if it does we will load it into TimesTen from Oracle (along with any other child rows) before completing the INSERT in TimesTen. So in the case where the parent always exists already in TimesTen there is no overhead but on the other case there is a lot of overhead.
If your log table is truly not related to the main table (not in TT and not in Oracle either) then they should go into separate cache groups. If each insert into the log table has a unique key and there is no possibility of duplicates then you do not need to load anything into RAM. You can start with an empty table and just insert into it (since each insert is unique). Of course, if you just keep inserting you will eventually fuill up the memory in TimesTen. So, you need a mechanism to 'purge' no longer needed rows from TimesTen (they will still exist in Oracle of course). There are really two options; investigate TimesTen auotmatic aging (see documentation) - thsi may be adeuate of the insert rate is not too high - or implement a custom purge mechanism using UNLOAD CACHE GROUP (see documentation).

  • Upload Speed Boost Option for Cable Plans

There have been multiple posts from other Bigpond users requesting higher upload speeds on their cable services on the Whirlpool Technology forums. It seems today with families sharing even a Telstra Ultimate Cable connection at home, doing various tasks such as uploading photographs and videos to social media, performing online backups, using cloud services, online gaming, video conferencing or any other upload intensive applications, it can quickly make an Ultimate cable connection quickly feel no so ultimate with only a 2.4 megabit upload speed. I'm suggesting the thought of providing another speed boost option for those with Telstra Cable services similar to what is already in place but with a higher upload speed (to align with Velocity?) and higher cost per month. This gives your customers the added flexibility of being able to pay for the option should it be needed and can be marketed to the customers appropriately also during signup. From a technological point of view the DOCSIS 3.0 technology used by the Telstra Cable network is more than capable of being up to the task of catering for higher upload speeds. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS I hope this suggestion is of use as I can see clear profitability gains for Telstra. Just by the introduction of a simple new product you will be able to keep more current customers happy and attract more in the process.

+1 to increase it by any amount. But I would be happy to pay an extra $10 per month for at least 10Mbps up. Purely for the benefits of online cloud storage to backup photos etc - a process that is painfully slow with most of the U.S. based cloud backup solutions. I can understand that part of the reasoning might be to prevent users from hosting web or ftp sites and the like, but without a static IP - it is not that feasible anyway (yes I know you can have dynamic dns services etc. but Telstra wouldnt be making it any easier without static IP's). For example: August 21, 2014 - Cogeco Cable Canada Enhances its High Speed Internet Service : The Turbo 20, and Ultimate 55 High Speed Internet package upgrade includes an upload speed increase from up to 2 Mbps to up to 10 Mbps, at no additional cost. The newly launched Ultimate 120 High Speed Internet package offers download speeds of up to 120 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps, as well as a monthly data transfer capacity of 425 GB. (Just do a search and replace on a few words in the above paragraph and feel the potential happiness!) I'd like to hear a response from Telstra.

  • Precision on "Write Intensive" applications

    Hi,
We dont have experience with Oracle so far.
From Oracle faq, I saw the information "...RAID 5 is good for read intensive, but not write intensive applications."
What is write intensive application? We are planning to have 200-300 mb of transactions per day in a database.
    Thanks.
    Claude

this is a topic that generates significant debate. based on my experiences, the oracle documentation i have read, and input from large disk manufacturers, i generally recommend raid-1 for many of the reasons mentioned in the previous response.
databases typically use random, low-block-size (16k and under) i/o that is better suited for raid-1. raid-5 excels in highly sequential, large block size operations. even though raid-1 "costs" more in acquisition cost, i believe the relatively low cost of disk storage is worth the extra price in terms of the performance benefit you will receive (in both normal and in degraded modes) for larger, higher volume databases.
no matter what raid mode you use, most raid controllers allow you to enable write caching, which can speed the performance of write operations. make sure you have battery backup on your hardware if you enable this option.
another very important factor you should address is the distribution of your raid arrays over multiple host channels. this means that you should not hang all of your oracle data off of a single scsi or fiber disk bus. distributing your data over multiple buses also opens up the ability to store frequently-accessed data on faster disk. so you could use a combination of raid-1 and raid-5 if you wanted to compromise. but you always have to be monitoring the i/o performance of your hardware and database, so you can balance the i/o appropriately.
