Options / strategies for implementing subportals

I am currently working to create a "subportal" for a specifically intended only for a subset of our portal users. I am trying to determine if creating a different URL for the subportal would be better or simply base the experience definition on which community the users are currently in.
Separate URL:
Pros:
1) I know how to show a different branded login page based on URL. I have no idea how to show the non-default login page otherwise. Is it possible?
2) Users can perform searches using the default search AS and still have the subportal branding
3) users can view other users profile pages with subportal branding.
Cons:
1) What happens if a user logs in to subportal1 but then clicks on a link to a community that is supposed to be in subportal2. I would suspect that they would see the community with the wrong header.
2) Users would have to relogin when moving between portal base urls (www.myportal.com/portal/sever.pt and subportal.myportal.com/portal/server.pt, for example). Probably possible to get around this using cookie domains.
3) Because there are really 2 different UI's of the same site, nothing will prevent a user from accessing a user's profile from the subportal URL when that user isn't part of the group that the subportal belongs to.
4) What happens if a user that doens't have access to the subportal tries to login using the subportal URL?
Same URL, base experience rule on current community
Pros:
1) Switching between communites in different subportals will switch experiences, which is probably desired.
2) Easier to explain to users that they are still on the same "site", so you can do things like "search this subportal, search all subportals" with less confusion.
Cons:
1) Hard (impossible?) to keep Search AS / User Profile AS separate?
2) How to show separate login page?
I guess a third option would be to use separate portal databases... but i was hoping to avoid that.
What does your company do to handle this?
Thanks!

Ah ha! You've uncovered the truth about subportals -- that they're not really subportals at all. (That could explain why they were renamed to Experience Definitions.)
It's hard to tell exactly what you're trying to accomplish from your post, but if you're trying to secure access to content, the safest (though also most expensive) way to do that is with a separate portal database. As you've discovered, setting up an experience definition, whether you use a separate URL or not, does not affect portal security at all.
Let me address some of your points below (your text in italics):
+1) I know how to show a different branded login page based on URL. I have no idea how to show the non-default login page otherwise. Is it possible?+
Yes. You can use source IP address or address range. Don't know if that will work for you, but I thought it was worth mentioning. There are probably other ways too, but I don't have the screen in front of me with the complete list. The screen to which I'm referring is the experience definition rules manager, I think.
+2) Users can perform searches using the default search AS and still have the subportal branding+
True, but you don't need a separate URL for this. If you base the branding on the experience definition (subportal) rather than on the community, and base the subportal "assignment" (for lack of a better term) on, say, what folder the user is in, you'll still get a correctly branded search activity space.
+3) users can view other users profile pages with subportal branding.+
My comment about #2 also applies here.
+1) What happens if a user logs in to subportal1 but then clicks on a link to a community that is supposed to be in subportal2. I would suspect that they would see the community with the wrong header.+
They will see the community with subportal1's header, unless there is some other rule that kicks in to change that behavior OR if you've applied branding at the community level. Community-level branding wins over subportal-level branding.
+2) Users would have to relogin when moving between portal base urls (www.myportal.com/portal/sever.pt and subportal.myportal.com/portal/server.pt, for example). Probably possible to get around this using cookie domains.+
Correct and correct. Of course the only reason they would ever change URLs is if they clicked an absolute link somewhere or typed in the other address. Most, if not all, of the links in the portal should resolve as relative links, keeping users in the same subdomain.
+3) Because there are really 2 different UI's of the same site, nothing will prevent a user from accessing a user's profile from the subportal URL when that user isn't part of the group that the subportal belongs to.+
That's correct -- and, as I'm sure you know by now, seems to contradict the meaning of the word "subportal." This is a common misconception -- that subportals have something to do with security -- but I see you've already figured that out. :-)
+4) What happens if a user that doesn't have access to the subportal tries to login using the subportal URL?+
Interesting question. I've never tried, but my assumption would be that the portal would throw an error, kind of like when you try to open a web service when you don't have access to the remote server (I think). There are lots of parent-child relationship things in the portal that can get fouled up. As you know from #3, setting security on the experience definition won't really do anything (except prevent people from editing it and perhaps cause weird errors). Applying portal security to communities, portlets, documents, etc. is the way people secure their portals. That was true before subportals existed and it's still true now, as experience definitions have no effect upon security.
+1) Switching between communites in different subportals will switch experiences, which is probably desired.+
Correct.
+2) Easier to explain to users that they are still on the same "site", so you can do things like "search this subportal, search all subportals" with less confusion.+
Correct.
+1) Hard (impossible?) to keep Search AS / User Profile AS separate?+
By separate, what do you mean? Let me explain . . . if my experience definition is based on what community I'm in, when I leave that community, my experience definition is, by definition :-), undefined. You can probably hack the native code to make the activity spaces for search and user profile do something crazy, like maintain the experience definition of the last community you visited, but I'm not sure you'd want to go there technically nor do I know if that's the best experience for your users or not.
+2) How to show separate login page?+
See #1, uh, the first #1.
I hope this helps (at least a little bit). Experience definitions are very confusing and, as I mentioned, I'm not 100% sure what your use case is. If you care to describe that in more detail, I might be able to help out a bit more.

  • What are the different options for implementing web security?

    Hi,
Right now I am working on an internet website. We are using JSP for presentation and running Weblogic Application Server. I want to know different options for implementing website security. One of the options that I am aware of is to use LDAP. But we donot want to go and buy a LDAP Directory Server now. So I would really appreciate if somebody could let me know my choices here.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
If you are working on a Windows 2000 platform, the most obvious choice would be Active Directory Server as this is shipped free with Server 2000. It is LDAP compliant, although does have a few differences that set it apart from the other X500 standard based solutions which I will mention in a moment. Details on these differences can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnactdir/html/msdn_activedirvsnds.asp
Other options are openldap, an open source implementation of an ldap server or iPlanet's Directory Server. If you are initially doing an evaluation, a trial version is available of the iPlanet software and can be downloaded from their site. I found this particularly easy to get to grips with and their is excellent documentation available. There is also an offering from Novell, but I have no experience of this.
    Hope this helps.

  • What Options I can implement for comunication PC ( lan ethernet) with SNA S

What Options I can implement for comunication PC ( lan ethernet) with SNA Server (Lan Token Ring) :
    To see file
    thanks you,
    jj González

What version of SNA server are you using?
SNA server version 3 and higher support tn3270/tn3270e (for mainframe connectivity) and tn5250 (for as/400 connectivity) clients. The ms windoes telnet client does not support those protocols so you need a 3270 and/or 5250 emulator from another vendor, such as NetManage or Hummingbird.
This assumes that you have a routed network between your workstation and the sna server.
If your network is bridged, then you need to use an emulator that works with the native sna protocol, as the sna server supports that as well. The NetManage and Hummingbird emulators will work in this case too.
Try to use the tn3270/tn5250 as the first choice as it does not require a bridged backbone. SNA is not a routeable protcol by default.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Best practice for implementing Manufacturing Cost Planning ( MCP)

is there any best practice for implementing Manufacturing Cost Planning ( MCP) using BI-IP?

    Hi:
Both options are viable. If you reverse posting in FB50 then FI GL account postings will also be reversed and along with cost center postings. Hence here advantage is that cost center reversal will be with referenced to the original document with which wrong posting were made. Disadvantage here is that you will to post the entry again in FB50 . In KB11N you will simply transfer cost center amount from wrong to new one that should be in place of it but here you will have no reference . I personally think reversing posting through FB50 is viable options , reverse postings can be seen in KSB1 as well against that cost center.

  • Is licence required for implementing JavaTv and JMF.

    Hi,,
I am trying to develop GEM middleware for my STB,
The STB has OS20 as RTOS and implemented on an ST chip
This GEM is DVB MHP minus DVB.
We have to implement JavaTV package and JMF for that,
But do we have to pay any royalty to SUN for implementing the JavaTV or JMF packages or can we implement the binary versions of the packages.
Please letme know how to implement the following packages
    org.havic.*
    org.davic.*
    javax.tv.*
    org.dvb.*
    and JMF?

    Hi Rohit,
let me also add a few words. In principle the process Sales Order Processing B2B with ERP sales order in CRM Web Channel means that you setup (a) Web shop(s) that use and display the CRM product catalog but create orders directly in SAP ERP without first creating them in SAP CRM. It also allows to use certain E-Marketing features of CRM in the Web shop. The CRM product catalog in this process can only be used if you do use the TREX. There is no way of directly call up the catalog from CRM in the Web shop by bypassing the TREX.
In the SAP E-Commerce for SAP ERP solution (ECO ERP) we in contrast offer the possibility to use the ERP catalog without the TREX. In this solution you can use the Memory Catalog which is not using the TREX. This solution by this way allows to directly use and display the ERP catalog and create orders directly in SAP ERP.
For the CRM catalog in contrast we do not have something similar to the Memory Catalog. Instead you DO need to use the TREX to display the CRM catalog in the Web shop.
The only option you have to "avoid" the TREX i a CRM web shop is what Easwar and Christoph have written about: The usage of an external catalog from a 3rd party catalog engine via the Open Catalog Interface (OCI) in the CRM Web shop. This we do offer for the CRM Web shop. However if you do not have an external catalog engine and want to use the CRM catalog then again you do need to use the TREX. It does not matter if you do not want to use product search nor prices other than fro ERP sales order.

  • Optional implemenation for interface methods?

hi, is there a way of putting several methods of a interface to optional implemenation? such as one method name but different parameters, and put all of them to optional implemenation for classes that implements the interface? thanks :D

hi, is there a way of putting several methods of a
interface to optional implemenation? such as one
method name but different parameters, and put all of
them to optional implemenation for classes that
    implements the interface? thanks :DNo.
If a class implements that interface, then it must either implement all the methods, or declare itself abstract.
You can do like the various XxxAdapter classes to in Swing. Create a concrete class that implements the interface, and give all its methods empty bodies. A subclass then overrides only those methods that it wants to actually do something with.
Note that I don't think this approach is usually a good one. If there are some methods that are optional, then maybe they should be in different interfaces, and classes can implement various combinations of your interfaces.

  • Strategies for valuation variant

    Hi,
I am creating a valuation variant in Product Costing for standard cost estimation.
Could someone tell me what the most common strategies for materials, activities, subcontracting and ect. processing are?
I know that it depends on the agreement with client, but I don't have any information about the client needs, so have to do a standard, most common valuation variant.
    Thanks,
    Karol

    Hi
General valuation strategies would be as follows
    1)  Material - Planned price, Std price, Moving avg price, Purchase Info records
    2)  Activity - Plan price for the period, Most upto date plan price
    3)  Sub Contracting - Effective price from purchase order, Net / Gross purchase order price
    4)  Ext Processing - Same as in 3
The above are general strategies - but also depends on various other parameters viz
    1)  Decision on activity pricing
    2)  Hw stable are material prices - it also depends on commodity types if u are
    implementing for metals
    3)  Subcontracting strategies will work only if u hv subcontract situation.  Here again u need to define a std price in the system and do sub contract product costing
    4)  External operation is used - if operations are outsourced to vendors.  Here in routing u need to mention the info record etc.  Lot of other setttings need to be done in this case.
However, the general settings are mentioned.  Pls assign points if the above clarifies and let me know whether u hv sub contracting and external operation so that additional suggestion can be given further

  • Optional Feature Not Implemented

Can anybody tell me the cause of this SQLException -
    Optional Feature Not Implemented ?
I am getting this exception when i try to make my resultset scrollable -
    nConn.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
    or either use PreparedStatement.
It occurs only when i use MSAccess or SQLServer Database. It doesnot occur with Oracle.
whats the solution of this ?
    Thanks
    Sonalp

There are several JDBC drivers for SQL Server, use one that support scrollable resultsets. The JDBC2 standard is made up of one required part and one optional package that the driver manufacturer might implement.
Microsoft has released (or are about to, it might be beta) a driver of their own that should support scrollable resultsets. You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/jdbc.asp

  • Disable Drill options only for one dimension of  Web Analysis report

    Hi,
Please help me on below issue.
I created a web analysis report with 3 dimensions Accounts, MRC and Measure. I have to disable drill down and drill up options only for Measure. Accounts and MRC should be drillable where as Measure should show the selected member as static and not drillable.
    Thanks

    Hi Swetha,
You must've realized that- Even if you select only the desired members, you end up being able to drill-down unwanted members. Correct ? :)
The only way, I believe, is- To create a users' group at your Data source side, perhaps, Essbase & provision this new group with a Metaread filter which prevents him/her from Drilling down to the leaf node.

Nic, for me the iTunes window looks like this, when I connect my iPad 3:
I select the iPad in the "devices" section of the Sidebar (use: "View > Show Sidebar" if the sidebar is hidden).
Click the "Apps" tab in the "Devices" pane.
Scroll all the way down in the Devices pane to "File Sharing" "Apps" section.
Then do I click "GarageBand" to select the documents in the right panel.
Which part is different for you? Perhaps you could post a screenshot?
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Purchase Order Release Strategies for Changed Amount

    Hi Gurus,
We have a unique request from the business to set the release strategies for POs based on the Still to Deliver amount, not the Net Total Amount of the PO.
Example: Configuration is PO total amount <$5K requires only L1 approval.  PO total amount >$5K requires L1 and L2 approval.  PO was created for $8K and was release using L1 and L2 approvals.  Receipts were posted to PO in the amount of $7K.  Now the buyer has added an additional line item for $1K.  The PO total amount now shows $9K ($8K + $1K), the Still to Deliver field shows only $2K ($1K from original remaining amount + $1K from new line item).  Business wants the release strategy for this change order to go through L1 only since the Still to Deliver amount is <$5K.
Has anyone done this before?  Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Gabe
